- loudhowie, on 04/30/2009, -2/+35A tree down in your neighborhood? You could post a report about that. But first, you have to pay us.
A flood is happening in your area? You can find out how to evacuate. But first, you have to pay us.
Practice canceled cause of the rain? Don't message your friends over Facebook, do it here! But first, you have to pay us. - SuPirch, on 04/29/2009, -0/+25the problem is : who will want to pay for social networks? Microsoft vine 'd better be good!!!
- KibblesnBitts, on 04/30/2009, -0/+23I'll stick with facebook. And if they start charging, I'll find something else.
- smartsalman, on 04/30/2009, -1/+17FAIL.
- justjk88, on 04/30/2009, -0/+13wow.... is Microsoft really that stupid.... I use facebook, but i would never in a million years pay for it. Free is worth the price of admission for sure, but i don't know how much I would pay to use any social networking definetly not monthly! WTF Microsoft this will fail hard!
- cplusplus, on 04/30/2009, -4/+16Trusting Microsoft with my info: No.
Paying: No - asgardshill, on 04/30/2009, -0/+10"Now the guy's got Microsoft as a partner. Any problems, he goes to Microsoft. Trouble with the bill? He can go to Microsoft. Trouble with the cops, deliveries, he can call Microsoft. But now the guy's gotta come up with Microsoft's money every week no matter what. Business bad? ***** you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? ***** you, pay me. Place got hit by lightning huh? ***** you, pay me."
- cyoder, on 04/30/2009, -0/+9I'm not typically anti-MS, but my, how they would fail with this.
- Alderon, on 04/30/2009, -0/+7Dugg because it is a stupid idea and people need to be warned.
I have a pay-per-month communication network already - I call it a phone. - Manther, on 04/30/2009, -4/+11Yeah, but you're not getting quality from Microsoft...
- shutaro, on 04/30/2009, -1/+8Microsoft goes social, Madagascar closes ports.
- Remelox, on 04/30/2009, -0/+6Okay, I'm going to tell you a secret. TV now comes over the airwaves. Sure, you have to pay for the tv and the antenna but after that, it's free. Well, except for the electricity, unless you hook everything up to a bike. Okay, now you're paying for a bike. Or maybe a solar panel. Yeah, a solar powered TV or maybe wind. You you could build a small damn in a creek behind your house if you have one or maybe use some wave device on a lake or ocean by your house. Yeah, yeah, okay. Big initial investment but worth it. But the important thing, is that...um...what were we talking about?
- GiantJacob, on 04/30/2009, -1/+6"Practice canceled because of the rain? Send an alert to your teammates. And in more serious situations, a flood, say, the site will provide information on how to handle the emergency. Vine will also offer updates from sources such as the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration."
Email and TV does this for free - shauner, on 04/30/2009, -0/+5Doesn't Facebook make money of of pay-per-click? At 200 million users that's probably a decent amount of money.
- simonowens, on 04/30/2009, -0/+5Facebook doesn't have a viable business model? How the hell does the journalist know this, since it's not a public company? Insider reports over the past year have indicated that Facebook is turning a profit.
- sammio2, on 04/30/2009, -0/+5"A tree down in your neighborhood? You could post a report about that"
Really... This product is obviously intended for people who don't have REAL lives!
I mean what would "Just went for a large crap" come under, an alert or report!?
As for paying, well thats just stupid! - adeelarshad82, on 04/29/2009, -1/+5yea i don't like that fact that its a desktop application that can be integrated with your IM. Not sure thats for me
- P5ycHo, on 04/30/2009, -0/+4Looking into the future.....
FAIL..... - pcpimpster, on 04/30/2009, -0/+4Problem though, it is not profitable. Digg has the same issue.
- GeorgeClayton, on 04/30/2009, -0/+4Even if YOU were willing to pay as an individual, how would you get your friends there?
- firewall1, on 04/30/2009, -0/+4Cell phone bill - check.
Utility bill - check.
Mortgage - check.
Microsoft vine bill - not gonna happen.
I remember when MS started charging people to have extra space in hotmail. It was $15-30 per year for 100mb. Gmail came out with 1 or 2GB (forgot was it was back then) for free, and mysteriously MS stopped charging.
Idiots, lol - I'm not paying for that. - deslock, on 04/30/2009, -0/+3Snorg Tees can't finance the whole network.
Plus, desktop browsers are a tiny piece of the social future. Nobody has properly tackled mobile, tweets, IM and everything else at the same time.
Things are ripe for change here. I'm just not convinced anyone can do it without backwards support for all the platforms already out there. Single sign on for all your social apps? Awesome. - headzoo, on 04/30/2009, -1/+4Microsoft has to be one of the dumbest smart companies ever. I think they really struck gold with Windows and Office, by being in the right place at the right time. Since then I don't think I've seen them come up with a single good product idea. I mean, some of their ideas have been tragically bad.
I think for the sake of the company, they need to fire the entire upper crust executives, and replace them with a younger, hipper group. - bmcnally, on 04/30/2009, -3/+6Who will want to pay for online multiplayer gaming?
- Manther, on 04/30/2009, -0/+3Hmmm, let's take a quick look at some other social networking sites that wanted you to pay for membership... Classmates.com? Hi5? Wow, I can't even think of more right now, that's how successful the pay for use model is in the social networking world. No one wants to go online to spend time with their friends who can afford (and are dumb enough to pay) a subscription, they want to be able to find ALL of their friends, and perhaps even meet strangers.
- Wayfarer12, on 04/30/2009, -0/+3As if Microsoft doesn't make enough money charging arbitrary fees for Xbox LIVE and Zune Pass subscription.
GREEDY ASSFUNNELS! :\ - imric, on 04/30/2009, -0/+3Yes. Part of it is free. That is the only part that will even be looked at.
The subscription part? Well. If you need to pay in order to post useful information? FAIL. You can post for free almost anywhere else.
If you need to pay to READ useful information? FAIL^2.
Limit either side of the equation to subscription-only and you have limited the effectiveness of the communication (which is what makes social sites work, after all).
Microsoft will follow the same path they always do. Pay off companies and governments to use their services (to much MS fanfare) - and that will work for a while until those companies and governments realize that the PUBLIC (you know, the most important ingredient for a 'social' site?) isn't listening and they bolt. With a deafening silence.
The only way this would work is if MS offered unlimited (and downloadable) movies and music, DRM and restriction free, in a common format NOT controlled by themselves as part of the subscription. That ain't happening, though. - DarkprinceArmon, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2That's totally ridiculous that we would have to pay for something we could get on a basic free bulletin board. Microsoft is thinking in terms of their Xbox live service and not in realistic public interest. Pay for MS social or get Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter social for free. Which one will the public fall for?
- FKnight, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2Microsoft rebranding their products every 3 days, or coming out with a half dozen different products that compete with each other doesn't help either. Add to that that customer service for their online products consists of "community support" from a bunch of people who can't even be bothered to actually read the posts they're responding to.
- PhillyMJS, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2This is exactly what I heard in my head as I read that article. Dugg.
- loudhowie, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2Oh I read the article. But what qualifies as a premium service? Frankly they can take anything, make it premium and slap a fee on it. And lets face it, in most situations if there is an emergency, you don't have the time to run to your computer, start it and login to post anything. What if the power is out? What if the internet is out?
So if you have a smart phone, now you have to pay to use the service. Brings me back to my original point, first you have to pay us. - nepidae, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2Once again they are 5 years too late.
- pcpimpster, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2FTA: "A tree down in your neighborhood? You could post a report about that. Practice canceled because of the rain? Send an alert to your teammates. And in more serious situations, a flood, say, the site will provide information on how to handle the emergency"
Erm... that is basically what you can do now with Twitter. This is a fail for MS in the making unless Vine has some seriously killer features. - benbrooks101, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2Ah yes... Microsoft's business model in practice : "Copy others and charge for it."
- jturan, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2I think this will be about as successful as Windows Millenium Edition. Social networking sites like facebook and twitter have turned the business model upside down in terms of how to make revenue. Trying to charge from the ground up is going to be next to impossible with all the other free alternatives out there. The only way I see a far reaching subscription service being successful is if an existing entity with a huge base such as facebook began to impose limits on uploads for free accounts and would charge a small amount each month to extend that cap. I would hate it, probably join a group opposed to it, but I think enough users would pay a couple dollars a month to bring in some revenue for the companies that fell into this category.
- PhillyMJS, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2What's most amusing is that they show up late to market with a lackluster, me-too offering and expect to do well against established, focused competitors.
It's like they still think it's the 90s and they can just bully their way in and kill off the competitors because they're Microsoft. Er, no, guys-- these days your products have to compete on their merits. It might be a good idea to give them some. (Hint: "Like Facebook, but you have to pay us to use it!" isn't one.) - inactive, on 04/30/2009, -0/+2>>Microsoft goes social
Yeah- like a disease. - creepingdeathv2, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1its really not zune that i m criticizing...
its Microsofts attitude and cockiness...that was partly the reason for zunes failure...sure zune be worth the money...but its entry to the market was a little too late...if you ask me...hence it failed.
its the timing that matters...zune was too late...so is vine...and it just wont fly, however great it is...this is because of the inherent attitude of the people really, once something works and people feel that its good enough, they are less likely to switch and thats how a brand name is formed...
best example...windows...we all know that linux is free and safer , yet windows still owns the pc market...why? because windows works for them...they are happy with that...linux matured a little too late...and hence it wasn't a success...it probably never will be...
i m a linux user btw...but i m not a fan-boy...as you can see... - mksmothers, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1You are too late to the party Microsoft. Make it free and I might give it a whirl.
- inactive, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1Wow can M$ do anything with out a price tag attached to it?
There are simply too many free alternatives already. - inactive, on 04/30/2009, -1/+2woiw...how stupid you sound. Give it up.
And honestly...for you own good..the M$ thing has not been considered clever for about 10 years now. - blanksuspect, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1one day i'll start with Madagascar
- imric, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1ROFL glad I checked this thread. Love to read ad-hominem attacks as arguments.
FAIL, petersonca! FAIL. - jturan, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1Yet facebook was valued for $15 billion. Go figure.
- jackdaniels06, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1IT'S A DEAL! GEEEEEEEEEE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGvHNNOLnCk
- WardOnTheWeb, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1It's this sort of thinking that has kept Microsoft behind Google in the online space. Users flock to the free, ad-driven model. In many ways, the days of paying for software are coming to an end.
- jackdaniels06, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1NEWS FLASH: Microsoft figures out way to make money from search. They will now charge subscription fees...
- creepingdeathv2, on 04/30/2009, -2/+3this will be a bigger FAIL than Zune trying to de-throne iPod!
Zune sucks!! period. Vine will suck. period. - chapaj, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1Microsoft already has a paid social network: Xbox Live.
