- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -10/+186why the ***** would you want to donate to the girl scouts? They have a tighter monopoly on cookies than MS has on software.
- APHughes, on 10/12/2007, -13/+82I got this email back in 99
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -24/+72Digg this comment down if you want Bill Gates to send you $1000.
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49I'm not even sure how you're trying to make this into an insult.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49@drizek: The Girl Scouts don't have a monopoly, they have "competitors" like iCookie and Cookux
- MaiSacNjoMouf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Uhh, yeah. I have. I'm running it right now.
Have you "USED" Vista?? - JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -18/+53"At this time, the i’m™ initiative is available only in the United States. Please submit your e-mail address and we will contact you should the program become available in your country. Thank you for your interest."
Screw this... - scatteredbomb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36yeah, cause clearly free software is more important than saving some lives?
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33I put on my robe and wizard hat...
- byronm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Great incentive.
- mathmanjeffy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29@OBKenobi,
Years? You must either suck at computers, or expect it to make you your tea. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33Yeah, this is really good. MSN and now Windows Live is the only IM I have ever use. Everyone I know uses it. This makes me feel good about wasting time chatting about nothing now :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Those Keebler Elves are out slandering the Girl Scouts again!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23DAMN! So every time i IM my buddies to discuss how to rob money from the Red Cross and AIDS research, I'll actually be helping them?!? Noooooooooooo
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Oops. Missed two of the charities: Boys & Girls Club of America and the Sierra Club.
- alternateheaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Hrm, they say there is no cap, so hopefully some enterprising people will whip up some code to basically ping-pong messages back and forth to run up a huge bill for MS but also to help out some genuinely good-hearted organizations.
- snoble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@drizek
After reading your comment, and having just read the list of charities, I had to think for a moment as to what software Multiple Sclerosis sold. Then I clued it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17nocloud...you have pretty much GUARANTEED that that story will not get many diggs.
- nerioinvisible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14it's not the boys & girls scouts.. it's boys & girls CLUB
here is the link http://www.bgca.org/ - fossor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16from microsoft:
Once you've signed up, every ad you see in your message window contributes to the grand total we send to the causes.
you got a great idea but then you will need to program to load a ***** load of ads. think about the cost of bandwidth. and microsoft does not seem to say how much they are giving for each im. if it is .0000001 cents lets say, then why not just save on the cost of bandwidth and donate directly to the causes. remember microsoft gets to pocket money for each ad so in the end you are still fueling the software giant. Not to mention that donations are good for large corporations as they use it to offset taxes. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22awwww. OB is trying to fit in again, and failing.
Looks like it may be time to slink away for several months again OB. You won't be missed just like you weren't missed in the fall. - Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -14/+26Girl Scouts?
Oh boy, CAN I donate to an organization that denies membership based on religion and sexual preference?!
What if I'd rather donate to Bob Jones University or directly to Hitler Youth? - ChairmanTao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Cool. At least now I know I'm helping some kid the next time I cyber with my mistress.
- RussellDovey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12http://bash.org/?104383
bloodninja: I spend my mana reserves to cast Mighty F*ck of the Beyondness.
BritneySpears14: You are the worst cyber partner ever. This is ridiculous.
O_O - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Kenobi...you are just making yourself more pathetic by the minute. Every comment you make is making YOU look foolish. It is not doing ANYTHING to hurt Microsoft. You really must know this, don't you?
- mbeauchez, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14i'm TM? They trademarked i'm? Microsoft is truly ridiculous.
- arjie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Apparently no one wants any money.
- masonreloaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I work for a very large corporation, MSN or Windows Live Messenger are widely used in the IT Department, with Yahoo coming in second...
- silverbolt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@broomett: fossor raised a valid point and was replying to the idea of writing something to automate messages purely for the purpose of generating donation money. If the bandwidth from the ads costs you more than what you're generating through Microsoft, it would be more cost-effective to just donate directly. The charity gets more money, you save bandwidth, and MSN doesn't have to see your in-house spam. I'm not sure where you got all that 'change your life' stuff from.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10blaze03: The corporations i know use Jabber. The small businesses I know use MSN.
- verifex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wow, great marketing gimmick/PR for MS, bravo! I already use MSN, so hey that's all good!
- nonsapiens, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Actually, my entire office (12 people, so small) use GTalk, as do our UK clients (hundreds).
We discourage Messenger Live because it's bloatware supreme. - Gizza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5damn, the problem with blocking ppl is its harder to understand the posts that come after them, oh well.
- xxTazxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think everyone should do this...since OK its great PR for the big M....but still so many people use MSN that you should tell as many people as possible to signup!

Oh, and jacnet, I'm pretty sure they'll still donate if you're in a different country, just in US$. - mizraabianz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5man appreciate this effort by MS , let see how much apple or any other company give part of their revenue to charities, MS is not obligated to do that, if you don't want to contribute, good for you but stop with non sense comments and "suggestions"
- Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6
Dude, AIM and Kopete have out of the box support for MSN Messenger.
Just don't let Shelly the Republican find out that Linux is donating to a great American charity! - thecosmicpope, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Oh woah. Microsoft donate to chairty, and people still find things to bash about them! Thats...quite pathetic.
- JosephGoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the good thing about it though, is that you don't have to pay anything, Microsoft using the money from the advertisers and donates a portion of that, its better than nothing
- rajputwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4eh Michael Jackson trade marked happy birthday, so this seems like nothing
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, screw those bastards for giving loads of money to charity.
Who cares what the motive is? Money to charity is money to charity. - arcooke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Brought to you by Carl's Jr."
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Funny.
All this talk from Google about not doing evil, yet it's Microsoft and MS employees that actually go out and do good! - Samovar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Step 2 - "Place the text code corresponding to the cause of your choice into your Display Name."
- vietson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You people are so pathetic. Taking a post like this into a war between which IM is better. Seriously, at least microsoft is donating something to someone. What have your company or yourself done for anyone?
- incubus13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Too bad it's not available in my country (Venezuela). MSN Messenger holds the lion's share of IM clients over here.
- JosephGoss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8broomett, your a ***** idiot, fossor said that you might as well donate directly because the amount Microsoft donates is probably a lot less that the overall cost of the bandwidth involved
i have not been on digg long, but i have realised in the short time i have been here that your the most annoying and idiotic prick here - tuxlearner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5why is M$ being bashed for doing just about nething ? even i love to do it but the IM cause is really nice... no one will download and switch to Live messenger just for this program and for the existing people they just need to add a few extra words in their nick which doesnt hurt at all! and the Bill and Mellinda Gates foundation already donates millions in charity so wat even if u think its some PR Gimmick? ultimately the money IS going for a good cause. So a co. gets bashed if it fulfils its "social responsibility" and even if it doesnt ?
Just my 2 cents. - MiniGeekDigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I agree, tuxlearner. MS is bad in many ways, but no matter which way you look at it, now charities are getting money from MS. If Google did this, people would praise Google and bash MS, and when MS does this, people bash MS.
No, I don't love MS, and yes I do love Google, but really people...let them give to good causes without the bashing. - Rekzai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5WLM > AIM
