- samanathon, on 04/09/2008, -5/+42What's with all of the negative comments? The Digg community is always complaining about MS being closed-source, now they open the doors and you people still aren't happy?
- Shadowgamers, on 04/09/2008, -3/+23Because they can't find the link to download it
- rameznabel, on 04/09/2008, -6/+22First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then they open source there ***** ,then you win

- plamoni, on 04/09/2008, -2/+13Does this mean we might finally see an open-source Exchange server clone?? Maybe?? Any experts on the subject out there?
- mooninite, on 04/09/2008, -3/+13So government control is a good thing? No. Everyone should be forced by the government to do things that really aren't necessary? No, and this is coming from a full time Linux user.
- protogenxl, on 04/09/2008, -4/+12What is the over under for the word HACK in the source comments?
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -3/+10The register is such a POS anti-MSFT site, it almost makes MSFT seem angelic. Every story is how MSFT is nearly bankrupt, or how they kill baby seals. This article might be a big deal, but you would never really be able to tell from this site.
- FKnight, on 04/09/2008, -2/+9"2) Good algorithms have been stolen from open source projects so they have to re-write it in such a way that they can keep that whole Intellectual Property thing going when they are upset over stolen Windows licenses."
So, do you have anything to back this statement up that Microsoft has stolen open source code for their closed source software? - Aensland, on 04/09/2008, -5/+12No, it looks incredibly stupid and makes it hard to take anything you say seriously. Fortunately, we're not missing much.
- ericthegreat, on 04/09/2008, -1/+8Wow, I'm shocked. They are actually opening up the communication protocols between Exchange and Outlook. Never thought I'd see this day.
- toxicityj, on 04/09/2008, -7/+14no. not it is not.
- avgbody, on 04/09/2008, -4/+11The old bearded guys are cool but stuck in their ways; while, the teens are just dumbass bandwagoners who don't know what they are talking about with no original opinion of their own.
- sirhomer, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6It's a big deal no doubt, but it's not a simple protocol to begin with. It's very old and archaic (it's loosely based on Windows RPC, for example). It's best not to encourge it's use.
REST/SOAP is a better option and you can make Outlook use it instead. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/09/2008, -10/+16The Anti-Trust lawsuits, and fines have done a lot to ruin the company. Some stuff they did that they shouldn't have, but including a web browser or a video player in Windows wasn't one of them.
Thing is now they are so paranoid about being fined or law suited, that they are afraid to innovate. - sirhomer, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6Zimbra (the OSS version at least) and Citadel is pretty much that, but uses WebDAV for communication. I don't think it's worth the effort to try to emulate the extremely archaic Exchange protocol though. Effort would better be spent improving the functionality.
- Drathmere, on 04/09/2008, -1/+7This is exactly the ill informed MS bashing drivel that hurts Digg. All companies have to deal with IP problems. All companies (and OSS projects) Have to deal with people who have worked for other organizations. As much as I prefer to use OS X as my daily operating system, I recognize the huge impact MS has on the market. As a software developer myself, I cannot possibly paint MS as a house full of poor designers and developers. .NET is one of the finest foundations every laid in API development. You take the good with the bad. Ever use linux on a 486 clone from cyrix.. pretty bad experience. Look at where Linux is now though!
- batonrye, on 04/09/2008, -0/+6Sorry guys - we're not talking about the *source code* here. It IS however a detailed description of the API for these programs. Great news for a company like mine who develops against these technologies. Which can be nightmarish to say the least.
- TalksInMaths, on 04/09/2008, -4/+10This is a great PR move. FTA it was done in anticipation of the EU court case. Doesn't matter whether the code pages are worthwhile or not, the court hears "released source code" and all of a sudden MS is put in a good light.
- DestroyFascism, on 04/09/2008, -3/+9The US are stark raving mad! What did you expect?
- ucg1, on 04/09/2008, -2/+8I don't think the old bearded UNIX geeks are so much stuck in their ways as aware of the fact that Linux and OS X offer better tools for what they want to do than what Microsoft has to offer. If anyone is stuck in their ways its the Microsofties.
- nirav72, on 04/09/2008, -2/+8Link to download docs or didn't happen
- ferrix, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5I wish they did this a couple years ago. Info on the protocols will make my job a lot easier in the future.
- asurroca, on 04/09/2008, -8/+13They're not ragging on Microsoft because Microsoft is closed-source....they're ragging on Microsoft because they have to rag on something....
- augshow, on 04/09/2008, -1/+6I can see the IP lawsuits already.
- Kamujin, on 04/09/2008, -5/+10I think the correct form is...
crApple O$ X - ucg1, on 04/09/2008, -1/+6I get laid plenty. It helps that I have money thanks to my bearded UNIX skills.
- pyman, on 04/09/2008, -3/+8Msoft is not a afraid to innovate. They are just afraid of getting caught.
- Shadowgamers, on 04/09/2008, -1/+6Patent Trolls are already calling their lawyers after they heard 'Microsoft' and 'Disclose' in the same sentence
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -17/+21They're just pissed they don't have any legitimate excuses to rag on MS anymore really. No surprise there, you really can't please whiny teens obsessed with Linux and Macs.
- Tenoq, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4That's the idea. American democracy isn't government by the people, for the people anymore. It's corporatism, at it's finest.
- daftman, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4"The EU had an agreed budget of €116 billion for the year 2007, and €862 billion for the period 2007-2013; this represents around 1% of the EU's combined GDP. By comparison, the UK's expenditure for 2004 was estimated to be €759 billion, and France was estimated to have spent €801 billion. In 1960, the then "EU" (EEC) budget was 0.03% of GDP."
I don't think a measly hundreds of millions in US dollars of fine means much to the EU.
Next time check your facts first. - Shadowgamers, on 04/09/2008, -4/+8They've become the grandparents complaining about how bad everything this day is at the ripe old age of 14-30?
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -11/+15Do you happen to use OSsucks or Linsux by any chance?
- Almightymole, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Downloads hidden in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc203350. ... somewhere
- Sweeper18, on 04/09/2008, -2/+6So you are 1) An idiot for using Outlook 2) An idiot because you can't stop corrupting your files 3) An idiot because computers need to boot up because you shut them down during the day, and start up slowly because your company uses an encrypted disc? You are pestering a company to spend absurd amounts of money on weaker hardware without the software support of Windows so you can have a faster boot-up?
- Remmy, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4There is a difference between openness, open source, and free software.
- inactive, on 04/10/2008, -1/+4"Violates the RICO acts,
blackmail vendors,
steal technology,
club any newcomers or anyone smaller than us (everyone) with the legal system
and bribe officials to vote for us in ISO committees"
So far MS has done none of those things.
But Apple has done quite a few! - cquinnd, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3The Registers motto is "Biting the hand that feeds IT"... They try to come across as anti-everything Tech. Or in other words they apply Sturgeon's Law to the industry as a whole . (at least they did back when I read it on a regular basis).
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Stole the idea that Apple stole from Xerox?
And for the record, Steve Jobbs said his Macintosh was better. Bill Gates said it was true, but that it didn't matter.
And that was back in the Windows 1.0 days. - Remmy, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Afraid to innovate? You're assuming that they have in the past innovated and not bought out and blatantly stolen their ideas, patented them, and them put their creators out of business. How soon people forget the early days when Microsoft was sued and won lawsuits because Bill Gates said, "Yeah, but mines better!"
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3The innovation came from doing a much better job than their competitors, and by integrating the products together.
If you only have a basic knowledge of how to use a word processor to make an essay or make a spreadsheet, then you won't be able to appreciate this. But if you have ever used Access to create a company database, linked to networked spreadsheets, and countless company memos that are largely automated, mass produced, personalized to each recipient, then you have an idea of why this sort of integration totally obliterated every competing product. - nirav72, on 04/09/2008, -1/+4Possibly. Now if only someone would replicate in open source IMAP servers how push mail works in exchange on winmo devices.
- mile, on 04/10/2008, -0/+3This is such *****. Coca-Cola should open its "secret forumla" to whomever WHINES about not being able to provide a better softdrink. We are living in a world of babies who whine and kick and scream until they get what they want, and in reality what they NEED is a 2 by 4 smacked into the side of their heads!
- mile, on 04/10/2008, -0/+2There goes Europe destroying things again.. Problem is, people dont have anywhere else to run from Europe. We'll have to go out to the moon or Mars now. Stop the whining and the taxing Europe. You've got your own [Arab] problems over there, deal with that instead of pressing your thumb down on corporations that have created more jobs that ALL of your leaders COMBINED.
- ericd, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2They should start releasing the stuff that is actually hidden away for reasons of maintaining a proprietary system for a small elite group of customers, like HD-DVD/Blu-Ray interfaces, the DRM and the Windows Media SDK, and the protected media path. That's the sort of thing that is impossible for open source to work with.
It would also be nice if they made public the changes to DirectShow in Vista that break functionality, such as the ability to play a DVD from a subdirectory on a hard drive, or better still provide an official workaround or fix. - zeusgodmann, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Here are the links.
