- rotundo, on 01/13/2009, -4/+106Here's a video ad for Songsmith that's so awful you have to see it to believe it:

I swear I'm not an MS hater, but they're just so embarassing. - fribhey, on 01/13/2009, -4/+75garageband comes with windows 7?
garageband is not free. it comes with your computer purchase BUT does not come with each OS X upgrade. if you want the latest version then you have to buy iLife - hypografik, on 01/13/2009, -3/+62Dear Microsoft,
Please fire your User Experience & User Interface Creative Director.
Thank you. - sharkd, on 01/13/2009, -6/+65Yes, what a magnificent, magical, musical experience, as demonstrated by:
http://music.metafilter.com/2943/Runnin-With-The-S ...
It's amazing the way the software automagically does *nothing* to adjust to the vocals or tempo.
But it will help me sing about towels, so that's a plus, I guess...? - fribhey, on 01/13/2009, -11/+63what a ***** interface.
- seastobble, on 01/13/2009, -2/+48LOL at the girl using an Apple computer
- Testies, on 01/13/2009, -12/+51Throw it on the Microsoft going nowhere pile...
- kwernebu, on 01/13/2009, -4/+43Everyone Has a Song Inside. You heard it. You can't unhear it.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -13/+51MS is damned if they do, damned if they don't. Bill Gates could personally rescue a baby from a burning house and some people would find something to bitch about. It seems, to me, that MS is finally listening to their consumers. Have you tried Windows 7? I've been using it for 2 weeks and it ***** rocks. 2009 is shaping up to be a good year for MS.
- Chirp08, on 01/13/2009, -9/+42Wow, Microsoft proves yet again they have no UI design ability. You look at the overall screenshot and have no ***** clue what you are looking at. Open up Garageband and it's very clear where you are able to pick your instrument, where you can enter notes, and MOST IMPORTANTLY where your tracks are listed, what order, and their duration. Microsoft thinks that putting a ***** of tracks into a grid view that in no way represent any of this vital information is a good idea to create a song?
- diggdatt, on 01/13/2009, -29/+60Its not free and it doesnt come with Windows 7, whereas Garageband does.
- djlmnts, on 01/12/2009, -21/+52It's like Microsoft found some kind of home-schooling Christian commune in the woods and hired them to make their commercial.
- haentz, on 01/13/2009, -0/+28Glow-in-the-dark towels, "Microsoft, so it's pretty easy to use"... This is just getting weirder and weirder...
- deweyhewson, on 01/13/2009, -0/+25Wow. That's terrible!
- SpiceWare, on 01/13/2009, -0/+25What's even more embarrassing for Microsoft is the laptop has all those stickers on it in order to hide the Apple Logo on the MacBook Pro they used.
Its a little hard to see by default, but if you click "Watch in HD" you can see it quite clearly. - Anpheus, on 01/13/2009, -3/+25It's obviously not competition for GarageBand, and I have no idea what was being smoked, inhaled or ingested by the article's writer, but he really ought to quit.
- KD5VMO, on 01/13/2009, -3/+24Songsmith = Kidpix
Garageband = PS Elements
Logic/Pro Tools = CS4 - artemis1, on 01/13/2009, -2/+23As a gay person I resent that. Most of us have talent and style. I would say it could not be more white boy dweeby.
- thecitysleepz, on 01/13/2009, -5/+26That could be the ugliest program I have ever seen.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -10/+29Im sure it will be just as effective as when Microsoft fought back by releasing the Zune.
- scarper86, on 01/13/2009, -0/+18WTF is wrong with Microsoft's ad department? They make it so frigging easy for the Microsoft haters. It's almost impossible to tell a genuine Microsoft ad from an SNL parody. My god I've never seen a company so completely clueless about "cool" in my life.
They're like my uncle who bought me some CD's from the discount bin at the drug store by bands who the members' mothers had never heard of. They had "rock" in the title so it had to be something the kids were hip to. Ugh - adiggityam, on 01/13/2009, -5/+23I'm very grateful that GarageBand came free with my Mac. I eased into making music (sample-based, then w/ keyboards) until I was convinced I'd stick with it with some seriousness (I fell victim to 'sweet looking electric guitar syndrome' a couple years before). A year later I was fully prepared for professional software and had some songs under my belt. I actually miss the simple 'effects' menu and the super quick click and drag sample looping system quite a bit.
- Balanced, on 01/13/2009, -2/+19Windows 7 comes with Garageband?
I'm pretty sure GarageBand is part of the iLife suite, which is a for-sale product, although most Macs come with it. - CasaMan, on 01/13/2009, -0/+17http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/pro ...
Hmm, seems like they removed it.. mirror:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oGFogwcx-E - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -7/+23Microsoft excels at them.
- tavallai, on 01/13/2009, -0/+16Brought to you by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
- mogdor, on 01/13/2009, -0/+15What idiot came up with this ***** commercial and thought it was clever....they need to be fired ASAP
- ericdano, on 01/13/2009, -0/+15Honestly, it is different than Garageband. Garageband is more user driven. It works by people dragging loops, or singing or playing into it. Songsmith does the backgrounds for you. So.....less user driven than Garageband. And more dumb.
- FredFredrickson, on 01/13/2009, -13/+28Vista / Win 7 is only slow on ***** computers. Get rid of the e-machine and pony up for a better rig, or continue using XP and stop complaining.
- skoles, on 01/13/2009, -2/+16Was this even supposed to contend with Garageband? If it was, how could they look at it and say "This is something we should be showing in public."?
- chicken101, on 01/13/2009, -2/+15This is real?
I saw this a few days ago.
I can't believe it. - robdazomba, on 01/13/2009, -0/+13I think MS is trying to make ads that are intentionally cheesy and "bad" in the sense that they get lots of word-of-mouth and become viral. Problem is, these are just plain bad, as in embarrassingly, overwrought corporate marketing dept. bad. And when you have ads like that going viral because you're trying too hard to be hip and people are snickering at your cluelessness, that's probably not a good thing.
- Cerealkillr, on 01/13/2009, -1/+14I would go as far as to saying that any crappy shareware application is better than this..... And i have always supports MS.
If you want a good program, get ACID Pro. Nearly a good a garage band - inactive, on 01/13/2009, -5/+18Garageband comes with Windows 7?
- lars972, on 01/13/2009, -2/+14This makes it all worth it. Brilliant.
David Lee Roth + songsmith = pure magic
http://i.gizmodo.com/5129613/david-lee-roth-%252B- ... - theHman, on 01/13/2009, -1/+13Garageband automatically transcribes the music onto sheet notation.
- embryoinbloom, on 01/13/2009, -1/+13i was asking if he was looking in the mirror
- sfhock, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11everyone get ready to adjust your happy and jazzy sliders...
- freezerburn666, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11about 10 seconds was enough to call it quits.
- sfrench, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11You beat me to it. That song is truly amazing.
- blacknyc, on 01/13/2009, -3/+14that is ***** garbage
- sfhock, on 01/13/2009, -0/+11that commercial scared the ***** out of me...
- Billions, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10Agreed.
- FredFredrickson, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10God, the comments on that page, which I read while listening to that track, had me almost falling out of my chair. Good stuff!
- yikiad, on 01/13/2009, -1/+11holy mother of god MAKE IT STOP
(i'm not bagging on the product, just that horrific video) - lichme5000, on 01/13/2009, -11/+21Could.
Not.
Be.
More.
Gay. - piptheminkey, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10Have you watched any of the promo videos for this? The people here are going extremely easy on Microsoft. They have to be some of the most pathetic things I have ever seen. And thats no exaggeration.
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/pro ...
There's one of the better ones. - MRintheKeys, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10Good gawd, I stand corrected. I have seen TV infomercials with better quality.
- tjr88, on 01/13/2009, -0/+10Is defo A MBP
- superterran, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9Well, this is obviously not a garageband competitor. I'm not musically inclined at all, but even I have garageband on my dock. This program... well, I'm not the worlds greatest fan of jingle music, so I'm not exactly sure what I'd do with it. If it had some voice modulation stuff like Autotune, I could see wasting hours playing with it. But, for my money, Magic Garage Band (Where you tell garageband what genre and instruments to use and it generates music for you) seems to give you far more flexibility.
