- MattBlackCat, on 10/19/2009, -12/+203The XBOX is MS playing the same game as Apple
Their hardware
Their software
THEIR RULEZ - apothekari, on 10/19/2009, -6/+180This wouldn't be a problem if Microsoft would just lower the price of their damn HD's even just a little.
People have a real hard time paying 150+ for a relatively tiny 120g HD when you can get a TERABYTE for under a hundred. - inactive, on 10/19/2009, -12/+106Don't piss me off Microsoft, XBL isn't that special, I can connect my PC to to my HDTV in ten ***** seconds and I wont have those little ***** bastards calling me f*g**t and n**** all the time in COD4. Graphics cards have never been cheaper and for that matter so are USB keys you bitches.
- ShingoEX, on 10/19/2009, -9/+90The article is misleading.
The writer says no 3rd party cards will work, but the actual quote states "no unauthorized cards". If there's a licensed 3rd party memory card, it should work. Seems like they're just trying to cut out unlicensed peripherals due to the potential for compromising the system. - inactive, on 10/19/2009, -8/+85I don't want Last.fm, Facebook, and Twitter on my ***** Xbox.
- adamward, on 10/19/2009, -8/+70Microsoft: ***** You, We Have Your Money.™
- nunofgs, on 10/19/2009, -12/+70Oh? Let's see you upgrade your graphics card on that iMac.
- diggB, on 10/19/2009, -7/+64Cost of an xbox 360 memory card
512 MB for $25
2GB for $40
Sounds like a good deal to me!

I suppose they'll say this was done to prevent the memory units from destroying the consoles.... oh wait!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_pr ... - achansen121, on 10/19/2009, -0/+42Hulu on the other hand I could go for.
- DjBearPDX, on 10/19/2009, -2/+43I hope they at least bring lube this time
- uruururr, on 10/19/2009, -13/+54youd have the problem of constantly upgrading your hardware and waiting for the ports of xbox games to come to PC so you can play them.
- LostSoul83, on 10/19/2009, -1/+37I've tried to explain those concepts to people, but they don't care. Last time I checked, a Terabyte USB HDD was $90. An internal one can be had for less than $80. There really is no excuse to pay over $100 for anything less than 500 GB.
- chunkybeefstu, on 10/19/2009, -5/+37True... but you have to admit that MS has a good deal going when your last resort is to stop using your Xbox and start using your Windows-based PC to play games.
- flamincheney, on 10/19/2009, -4/+34I'm getting so fed up with all the proprietary accessories that these anti-competitive companies are forcing adopters to use. Whether it is iPods, cell phones, video game consoles, etc doesn't matter it all sucks.
In the end it creates a tons of waste too because once new models are released a whole new wave of proprietary accessories are required.
It kills competition, stifles improvements, artificially keeps costs high, and is in many ways monopolistic. - norwegianlegion, on 10/19/2009, -5/+33Dick move? Yes. Surprised? No. Not much of this ***** surprises me anymore.
When all around you gaming companies hold dear every last penny they can squeeze from you, regardless of customer loyalty, happiness, or god damn quality, what can you do? Sign useless petitions and wait for the inevitable crash, I suppose. - Lambeco, on 10/19/2009, -2/+30At some point it does become anti-competitive. It would be like saying, "Windows is their OS, they can lock it to Internet Explorer if they want." Whereas both the EU and US legal systems disagree.
- iheartbakon, on 10/19/2009, -3/+29Imagine the uproar if auto manufacturers could dictate to you what brand of gasoline or tires you could use for your automobile. Why is Microsoft (and other companies) allowed to get away with this?
- ohreilly, on 10/19/2009, -1/+26You can still get larger drives for far less than MS wants for their overpriced 120GB HDD.
One of the few good things Sony did with the PS3 (I speak as a 360 owner). - howdareyou, on 10/19/2009, -1/+24If your XBL name is PedobearInRehab, can you really blame them?
- OstrakonX, on 10/19/2009, -11/+33I bought an Arcade for 200 and they had some deal where I couuld get a 20gb drive for like 30 bucks or something. It was a waste but it allows me just enough space to download all the XBLA games I want, which is pretty much the only reason to own a 360 at this point. Most 360 'exclusives' are also available on PC, and the PS3 has better actual exclusives anyway (and they're not dicks about proprietary hard drives). Not to mention making people pay $50/year for ***** peer-to-peer gaming. I know 50/year is pretty cheap, but the principle of paying for something that should be free (PSN!) is just irritating.
- Lonandubh, on 10/19/2009, -5/+27Oh, i'm sorry, that brand of gas was never authorized by that car manufacturer. Instead, you have to pay $20/gallon for GM authorized gas (£15/L in Britain) or on*star will shut down your vehicle.
- meed, on 10/19/2009, -2/+21I wonder what the consumer rights are on this. Can Microsoft legally lock you out from your data? even if it is just a saved game? Seems to me that this goes beyond protecting their intellectual property, licensing agreements, and/or their bottom line.
This screws over consumers gouges them for "official" xbox accessories that might be using a industry standard interface. - dave122, on 10/19/2009, -1/+20you do realize you can buy any run of the mill wireless bridge and just hook it up to your ethernet port right?
- detroitplaya, on 10/19/2009, -6/+24preach brother lol
- BoneheadFarker, on 10/19/2009, -1/+18Yes, as I referred to when I said the MS drive was overpriced. But you can't get a 1TB laptop drive for that price, if you can even find one since they aren't scheduled to be available until next year.
- topcat5, on 10/19/2009, -5/+22If IBM had done this with the original PC, there would be no Microsoft today. It's ironic.
- Smokeydabear, on 10/19/2009, -11/+27All the microsoft prices are huge on the xbox. The used games are out of this world even. I was trying to get a wireless internet adapter and they are at the lowest 75 bucks for a new one. But I figured out how to route it through my laptop's ethernet port!. ***** you microsoft!
- veriix, on 10/19/2009, -0/+16Well you could start by comparing similar drive types. 360 uses 2.5" drives. Still way overpriced though.
- Brak710101, on 10/19/2009, -0/+16It's legal.
They have no legal obligation to ensure their hardware works with unauthorized third-party devices. Therefore they could kill them off on purpose. - Super6, on 10/19/2009, -1/+16Right now the word is that this ban is only for flash memory cards, not the hacked hdd's
- gfunk84, on 10/19/2009, -0/+15I have no issue with banning unauthorized memory units, but I wish Microsoft would sell an official enclosure that would let you use your own HDD. I'd even pay a ridiculous price like $50 for it sold without a drive.
My (official) 120 GB drive has under 10 GB free and I am not buying a MW2 console for a 250 GB drive. I guess I'll just stop downloading XBLA games and buying retail games (no room to install them and the disc drive is so noisy). - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/19/2009, -1/+16Microsoft doesn't set used game prices.
- AngryDeuce, on 10/19/2009, -3/+17You do realize that's built in functionality, right? That MS put that ability in there on purpose? I've been doing that with the 360 in my bedroom for a year now, there's even an article on the knowledge base that walks you through doing that...
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -6/+19This is akin to the iPhone, which Apple has to do HALF the blocks because of contract with AT&T and the other half because daddy Steve knows whats best. (p.s. I love my Apple products, but FU steve.. FU.)
- GrammerPants, on 10/19/2009, -6/+19PC gamers don't tend to wait for 360 ports, we have much better options. As far as upgrades, every 3-4 years does it, which isn't much different then consoles.
- SpazAttack5000, on 10/19/2009, -1/+14You have to if you want to go online again.
- KidShowtime, on 10/19/2009, -1/+143rd party killer!
- Zanrook, on 10/19/2009, -3/+16Don't mind me, just transferring my PS3 saves to my ipod and then backing them up on my computer.
- macromorgan, on 10/19/2009, -6/+19Why not just ban the cheaters and manipulators? I've got a hacked 120 gig in my HD and all it's prompted me to do is buy MORE DLC. For $100 I can put 500 gigs in my PS3 but it costs 50% more for 75% less in the Xbox 360.
I know which console is getting my support when multiplatform games come out. - fuzzybad, on 10/19/2009, -5/+17Typical case of Microsoft being Microsoft. They wait until they have a heavily invested userbase who are unlikely to leave, then start turning up the heat. I expect they will increase the price of XBox Live next.
- GrammerPants, on 10/19/2009, -5/+17+1 for using your brain good work.
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -2/+13No, this really IS anti-competitive. This is disallowing you to use a storage peripheral, which is not part of the protected IPO, ie this will go to court I guarantee.
- phpirate, on 10/19/2009, -3/+14A new video card for a pc costs as much as that 120 gig hard drive for your 360. You really can't argue the 360 is cheaper, because there's money you're spending everywhere. Controllers are like 60 bucks, DLC is like 10 bucks each, and so on.
- miquonranger031, on 10/19/2009, -1/+12It's not built into the 360, it's in Windows for bridging to anything, not necessarily the 360. But there's no question that the wireless adapter's price is ludicrous.
- BoneheadFarker, on 10/19/2009, -9/+20Doesn't the 360 use a 2.5" laptop hard drive? Sure, the Microsoft drive is overpriced, but at least compare apples to apples.
- gidd, on 10/19/2009, -1/+12@nunofgs: A graphics card isn't a peripheral. It's usually considered to be a component.
Your underlying point is valid, though. However, try upgrading the graphics card in your average PC laptop. Same problem. The iMac isn't intended to fit in the same category as a "normal PC", and neither is the Mac Mini. They're both basically laptops in weird boxes.
Of course, the comparable product -- the Mac Pro -- is arguably overpriced and even then it's not as simple to replace the graphics card in it either, due to the limited choice.
There's a lot of valid things to bitch at Apple about. The lack of expandability of the iMac's graphics card isn't one of them. - hydroplane, on 10/19/2009, -1/+12The more you tighten your grip, the more systems will be flash hacked.
- Khast, on 10/19/2009, -7/+18Yay, Microsoft is ***** it's customers over AGAIN!
/surprise - jshhmr, on 10/19/2009, -7/+17Moral of the story: buy a PS3
