- Kylde, on 01/30/2009, -23/+97too little too late
- 3242130193, on 01/31/2009, -16/+89Oh come on, this is something that Google had months ago, and Google's search results are still vastly superior to those of Microsoft. What's newsworthy here?
- jotate, on 01/31/2009, -9/+78Oh, Microsoft. You're adorable.
- evil-doer, on 01/31/2009, -1/+50that microsoft made a plugin for firefox.. the open source browser? it may not be better but its newsworthy.
- Ravenlark, on 01/31/2009, -9/+51"We're happy to report that we've officially integrated Live Search into Firefox by popular demand."
Since when does Steve Ballmer count as "popular"? - Igaryok, on 01/31/2009, -4/+42"If you had any doubts Microsoft didn't appreciate the advantages of Firefox's ability to accommodate add-ons."
This has nothing to do with what Microsoft appreciates or doesn't appreciate. Integrating live into Firefox simply brings Microsoft more revenue. - RSAgent007, on 01/31/2009, -11/+42Have you guys actually used this?
I was surprised at how good it was. Arguably, Live's search results seem to be as good as Google's. However, their image and video search seems to beat Google's. One of my friends over at Google tells me that she uses Live's image search frequently.
The daily image backdrop adds a nice touch. - inactive, on 01/30/2009, -6/+26Waiting for the GPL'd Linux stuff..
- diggforworld, on 01/31/2009, -8/+24Who uses Microsoft's search engine?

Most of the positive comments about Microsoft have positive digs while the Microsoft bashing got dugg down. Go ahead and search for some more if you want. You'll see that while Linux does get lots of love there are also plenty of people who like Microsoft despite their flaws. - fucter, on 01/31/2009, -2/+13google image search kinda sux now. but man, they rule at everything else they do
- MeltingIce, on 01/31/2009, -3/+13Next step: trash the entire IE project and make Firefox the default Windows browser :)
- barius, on 01/31/2009, -5/+14Can't say I agree. I've never found the Live search to be nearly as useful as Google, if I did, I'd use it. The image search has been especially useless for me. Try searching Live vs. Google images for "icon 16px" and see what you get. Most of the results from Live are neither icons, nor 16px.
As for the backdrop...meh. I want my search page to load as quickly as possible and to be as light-weight as possible. In that regard, Google still wins (though not by much). - alvinlee123, on 01/31/2009, -3/+12hmm, i was thinking too late in the game, but then i just tried out their image search, its better than google's,
- barius, on 01/31/2009, -1/+9Digg has never been the Linux luver that some trolls make it out to be. That crown is held by Slashdot.
For the most part, Digg tends to be pro-Microsoft. It's just that MS has had so few successes to talk about since Vista came out that it doesn't show up on the front page as often as Ubuntu which has been getting great reviews since 7.10. However, if you read the comments in either the Ubuntu or MS stories, the diggers tend to be pretty balanced in their opinions. - Clodhopper, on 01/31/2009, -2/+9Man you people will complain about anything. Wha wha wha, bitch bitch bitch. Get over it.
- PhAndrew, on 01/31/2009, -10/+17Google was on top of this long time ago. Good job Microsoft! high five!
/s - bjornski, on 01/31/2009, -4/+11I'm liking their image and video search.
- culbeda, on 01/31/2009, -1/+7The question of whether Google is vastly superior is arguable and most cases I've seen for it seem to be based on perception rather than any qualitative / scientific review. Above all else, Google has mindshare.
Don't get me wrong, I use Google, but largely because it's interface is minimalistic. (Unless you iGoogle, of course.) - jackdaniels06, on 01/31/2009, -1/+7This is an obvious response to the fact that Mozilla Firefox Browser is effectively eating into Microsoft Internet Explorer market share. It has been for some time now but it must be to a point where Microsoft had to do something about it.
- DDarkfire, on 01/31/2009, -2/+8Really? I have found that searching for phrases or for more vague terms (if you are not sure exactly how to word your query) yields MUCH better results from google. Granted, the image search seems a lot better, although I like google's layout more (maybe because I am used to it though).
- tgc1, on 01/31/2009, -4/+10Watch it, he's picking up a chair!
- alvinlee123, on 01/31/2009, -1/+7The searches are basically the same. What works for me is the layout. The fact that clicking on the image still allows me to stay within the image browsing screen as well as the option to scroll through other images and scroll through the webpage's image is win in my book.
- barius, on 01/31/2009, -2/+8Embracing, maybe. They aren't extending though, it's an open feature for any search provider to take advantage of. MS has just been slow to make use of it. I doubt it will help them extinguish either since having Live search available in Firefox only improves it's appeal to a wider audience.
- RSAgent007, on 01/31/2009, -1/+6Try this: "Erhu Album Art"
Basically, I'm looking for the album art for a CD called Erhu, by Jia Peng Fang.
Google: Correct search result is on the 4th page.
Live Search: Correct result is the 2nd result on the FIRST page.
Live wins. - thenonhacker, on 01/31/2009, -1/+5Though I use Google Image Search most of the time, I did test your same search. I searched for icon 16px at Live Image Search and do found the icons I want actually.
I'm finding myself search both Google Image and Live Image Search, and all I can say is that COMPETITION IS GOOD. I notice that both of them are trying to improve more and more.
BTW, Live Maps = Excellent just for the Aerial View alone! - ironwilliamcash, on 01/31/2009, -2/+6Wow so many people bitching about this. If you don't want the ad on don't install it. But the fact that Microsoft has accepted that it's browser (IE) is not the only option out there and that they are developing extensions for Firefox with in mind helping their customers seems pretty cool to me. I'm not at all a Microsoft lover, but for once I think they are making a good move in the right direction, even if a little late. But once again, if you don't want it, don't install it, that simple.
- chamberlanderic, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4then everybody hate firefox because it's the biggest.
- digitalpencil, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3^ psst.. it was a joke
- JVIikel, on 01/31/2009, -2/+5Yeah basically. I thought this was incorporated already. At least it has been on my google search up there for at LEAST one release that I can remember.
- dawpa2000, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Live+Search
- rakeshishere, on 01/31/2009, -1/+4Freaking late...
- digitalpencil, on 01/31/2009, -1/+4the vast majority of diggers use and like windows. all comments praising vista/7 get dugg through the roof.
- GuyHitByTruck, on 01/31/2009, -1/+4You mean everybody had that? I thought I was special!
- sakesaru, on 01/31/2009, -7/+10Embrace, extend, extinguish.
- ShellShock11, on 01/31/2009, -7/+10I thought this was an Onion article. Seriously, what a joke. I have been able to do the same thing on Google for months now.
- GansGans, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Alt+Enter
- chriskeyes, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2Live Search homepage loads quick too, the search box is always ready to go, while the background image comes up.
- chriskeyes, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2That's something Apple would do (case in point: iTunes on Windows)
- Causemos, on 01/31/2009, -1/+3Why would I want this when I often have to use Google to find things on Microsoft's own site? Kind of tells you how bad their ranking system is.
- zarcu, on 01/31/2009, -2/+4"We're happy to report that we've officially integrated Live Search into Firefox by popular demand,"
What popular demand? - chriskeyes, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2A lot of you may think that nobody wants Live Search, especially someone using Firefox, but I'm quite sure there is some demand for it, but from folks who aren't as tech-loving as Digg users are. I think there's been several comments on the Live Search blog about bringing a good add-on for Firefox.
- MalharP16, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1more like half /s
- gbhall, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1I just assumed that they already did this.
- krystalo, on 01/31/2009, -2/+3This title summarizes the situation: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/01/fire ...
- jait, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1And showing your vastly superior IQ by not knowing the simple difference between "there", "their" and "they're" only puts the icing on the cake for your comment.
