- whatthefu, on 10/16/2007, -8/+74Microsoft has a long way to go to compete with Apple in terms of PR, but I do like to hear things like this, even if it is just a result of competition.
- moonlonely, on 10/16/2007, -25/+86Apple's got DRM-free tracks too, but what they don't have are updates for their first generation machines. They'd rather have you buy a new iPod every year.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/15/2007, -17/+56Go Microsoft! ... I can't believe there hasn't been more user uprising about the DRM monopoly Apple has had with iTunes over the past couple of years.
- Jakerius, on 10/15/2007, -2/+35Definitely a step in the right direction for Microsoft.
- totorototoro, on 10/22/2007, -4/+36Are these the same DRM free tracks that both Apple and Amazon have access to (i.e. EMI), or does Microsoft have a new deal with a different label than everyone else?
- TGMD, on 10/10/2007, -6/+26don't credit jobs to starting this anti-DRM move, it was in fact brought about by the studios as a result of market research, Jobs just saw which way the wind was blowing and decided to make himself look good.
- Lassan, on 10/14/2007, -9/+28The difference between Microsoft's DRM-free tracks is that you don't have to pay extra like you do for DRM-free tracks from Apple.
- bilgates, on 10/13/2007, -6/+23Not every track is DRM track. 1million is a lot more than what Itunes has to offer now.
- bradym80, on 10/10/2007, -8/+24If this was apples doing, this story would be dugg off the charts.
- fkr3, on 10/13/2007, -2/+17No. The purpose of being DRM free is to extend some trust to the user. Not having DRM doesn't mean you suddenly have an unlimited license to do whatever you want with it. It means you're being given the opportunity to prove it's unnecessary.
Don't complain 12 months from now if everything is full of DRM because the whole DRM-free experiment proved people are incapable of being trusted. - inactive, on 10/13/2007, -10/+25they are usually broken by then anyways.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -10/+22To most people, MS has just as good PR than Apple. In fact, far more people are perfectly happy with their MS products than are happy with their Apple products.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/14/2007, -0/+12Right except DRM tracks are also 75 points = 99 cents. Apple charges you more and half the people on Digg were defending apple on it. Now they're silent. Wonder why? If Amazon can charge 89 cents for DRM less songs, and Microsoft charges you only 99 cents, and both have a larger library of DRM less songs, what is the justification of Apple's $1.29 DRM less songs?
- carl25, on 10/13/2007, -4/+16yea, i'm wondering about these drm free tracks as well, so if you download and share them, you can keep them for more than 3 plays ?
- Azio, on 10/14/2007, -2/+13It's actually 75 Microsoft Points per song, which is 99 cents. And the real value is in the $15-a-month Zune Pass subscription, something Apple has yet to match.
- link5280, on 10/13/2007, -1/+11DRM free doesnt mean you can steal the music!
- SouthsideIrish, on 10/14/2007, -0/+9Yes.
- TennisElbow, on 10/13/2007, -1/+10No, if you happen to run into another Zune user, and you "squirt" the DRM-free tracks you bought onto their Zune, that person will be able to listen to them three times, then the tracks will expire.
- TennisElbow, on 10/13/2007, -13/+21Funny how, right before Jobs' open letter ragging on DRM, and Apple starting to sell DRM-free music via iTunes, Steve Ballmer said in an interview that the future of the digital entertainment industry is DRM, DRM and more DRM.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -4/+11So you purchased them and Microsoft is giving you a way to share them with friends or family easily so they can basically try before they buy. But you're upset people can't just basically rip them, as in downloading them from Kazaa and so on? Seriously?
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Visually... Geez get over it http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2007/10/ ...
- wildmannz, on 10/18/2007, -4/+10If you buy one of these - remember that you are paying the "tax" that MS agreed to pay to Universal... which DOESNT get paid to the artist...
- TennisElbow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6EMI plus all the smaller and independent labels. The other major labels like Sony, Warner, Virgin, etc., aren't selling any DRM-free tracks yet.
- TennisElbow, on 10/14/2007, -10/+16You're confused because Microsoft prices their songs in "Zune Points" instead of regular dollars & cents, which is exactly what Microsoft wanted to do to you. Their tracks may cost "99 Zune Points", but that's about $1.50 in US dollars.
- TennisElbow, on 10/14/2007, -4/+9Apple already did it months ago, and it was. Remember the iTunes Plus announcement?
- Smills, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7It is also all too often true.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And is that Apple's fault or the decision made by the content copyright holders? Don't get me wrong, I applaud any implementation of DRM-free tracks in a standard format (plays on almost any device) from any copyright holder and I've purchased tracks from Amazon, but I don't blame Apple, Microsoft, Amazon , or any other online store that was forced to use DRM. Know where the DRM comes from and blame them, not who created the DRM to get the content for sale.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/14/2007, -2/+7Perhaps but its still 75 points per song, even DRM ones. Unlike Apple which charges a premium for DRM free songs.
- ialan2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Windows iTunes will convert WMA into MP3
- Quix, on 10/15/2007, -8/+13"zune will zoom past ipod by end of next year...." - xman2
Let's hold on to your comment and have a good laugh about it at the end of next year, hmm? - TennisElbow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Same tracks.
- Theli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Damn editing system....
In terms of DRM-free:
Amazon.com has Universal, EMI and some independent labels.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon.com#Amazon_MP3 ...
iTunes has EMI and some independent labels.

I don't know what the Zune Music Store will be offering in terms of non-DRM music. - gklitt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Wow, I'm honestly surprised that Microsoft finally gets it. They have improved their Zune lineup and the Zune Marketplace so much with this update that I am actually considering buying one now. Kudos to them for providing some good competition for Apple; this will be good for everyone.
- TennisElbow, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8So you never heard of iTunes Plus? Did you miss the announcement a couple months ago that Apple is now selling DRM-free tracks on iTunes? Wow, there's a whole colony of you guys crawling around under there...
- Lugano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't know why you are getting dugg down for supplying information with links...must be the fanboys.
- xman2, on 10/15/2007, -20/+24zune will zoom past ipod by end of next year....
- LordSkywalker, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7No, it has things people ACTUALLY WANT in a music player. Wireless syncing, DRM-free tracks, good interface, reasonable price, MP4 video support for the beautiful screen, etc.
- ssjninja, on 10/14/2007, -2/+6dude drm free = yes
- ArthurSucks, on 10/14/2007, -0/+4The rumor is that they will be Mp3 files. If so, no problem. You have to install the Zune software though.
- iirrkk, on 10/14/2007, -5/+9Microsoft points are evil. It's like going to the store in America and everything is priced in Euros. Microsoft has gotten so big that now they have their own currency...
- m3mn0n, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4It means you are not tied to a platform! So the music is free (as in freedom) not the other free (ala pirate bay).
Be smart about your use of DRM-free stuff. Don't ruin it for the rest of us. - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wrong, Amazon has the largest library of DRM-less songs. Followed by Microsoft and then Apple.
- SpasticThinker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Everyone that does not own a Zune thinks it's a piece of ***** - wow, and that is DEFINITELY the group that would know the most about it!
- ejdmoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's in Rand McNally, not Australia.
Kids these days and their incorrect Simpsons references. - chsbrgr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5with no idea what that sentence fragment means Im digging it up for "a douche army"
- Theli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think Amazon.com has Universal in DRM-free. I'm not sure Apple does.
- asaone, on 10/15/2007, -5/+8who trust Microsoft, they have a bad habit of coming back and biting you on the ass
- jinglehopper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4should manipulate the system to promote the little man who has to fight his way through a douche army
- fkr3, on 10/13/2007, -4/+7The answer is you don't have the right to distribute them. DRM is a protection mechanism not a license. You are still bound to the license you agree to when purchasing it, and whatever that entails.
- iirrkk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You make it sound like all these things are unique to the zune, when in reality most all mp3 players have everything on that list, save for the wireless syncing.
