- gcnaddict, on 07/14/2009, -6/+51Knowing Microsoft, Office Web will be remarkably easy to use.
Anyone disagreeing with me clearly has no insight into how the Office team handles user experience research. The Customer Experience Improvement Program has been used to track how many clicks it takes to get to the most frequently used functions and, as a result, simplify those functions as much as possible. This is just one of the processes used (in addition to methodologies like intuitive resource placement, etc.) which brought down the amount of time spent finding a semi-advanced feature in Office 2007 and Office 2010 from an average of 30 seconds to an average of 10 seconds. Microsoft actually uses psychology to build user experiences rather than just making things look pretty, which is why I look forward to using Office Web: it'll be easy to use and, by extension, a great help in me getting my job done. Using Google Docs isn't a fun experience compared to using Office 2007 in my eyes, which is why I want Office Web to be up ASAP. - Topher06, on 07/14/2009, -5/+29No way, I'm forced to use Office 2003 at work and honestly Office 2007 I use at home is far better.
- bsonline, on 07/14/2009, -4/+24Do you have a point, or are you just stroking your own geekdom? Open Office is ok, but Microsoft Office is definitely much better. The choice lies in the price difference, availability to you at work and if it is worth it to you.
See, try commenting with substance next time. It doesn't take much to not look like a fanboy asshat. - DiggOrNotToDigg, on 07/14/2009, -3/+21I am excited about office 2010 and windows 7. Seems like microsoft is getting back with stronger products....from my experience, office 2007 is far easier and faster than openoffice, google documents and corel wordperfect....But office 2007 costs arm, leg and stomach.
- Spyder2k, on 07/14/2009, -3/+19Word! Competition is welcome.
- DarkShroud, on 07/14/2009, -0/+132007 was the first big change in something like 10 years. The previous versions might have had new features added or menus changed a little but the layout/design hadn't changed.
- krisrm, on 07/14/2009, -2/+12Agree entirely; Google Docs is not the success story it should have been by any means. The people who make Office know what they're doing when it comes to productivity software; if they can get the "Web" part right, or at least do a decent job, I'll be quite pleased.
- antdude, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10I wished it was 100% compatible. Tables, spacings, formattings, etc. get all wrong between softwares. :(
- winmywii, on 07/14/2009, -3/+11What are the chances that this requires silverlight?
- krisrm, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9ok, here it is all laid out for you:
simplicity != static
Got that? - krisrm, on 07/14/2009, -2/+10Quit complaining about the ribbon! Just use it for like, 10 minutes and you'll find yourself wondering why you'd ever search through a random menu to do simple things...
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/14/2009, -2/+9I have NO interest whatsoever in Web based Office applications from ANY vendor.
They are too slow (until we get our ISPs to stop tard-throttling upload bandwidth) and I don't really have any interest in storing my documents (even temporarily) where ANY major corporation can mine them. - fragMasterFlash, on 07/14/2009, -1/+8If it works as well as Outlook Web Access then they have a winner on their hands. Anything less will be yet another cuss inducing nightmare.
- topgigmedia, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6But... will it work in any other browsers (w/out losing a huge amount of functionality) besides IE? I won't hold my breath, while remaining hopeful.
Nice to see my Redmond neighbor keeping up the fight and contributing to over push in innovation and technology.
- djgreedo, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5I believe you need to download a little add-in from Microsoft. It's a really small file that you run once and it gives Office the ability to save as PDF.
- djgreedo, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Well Windows Mobile 6.5 is a huge improvement over 6.1 (well the interface at least - the OS itself was always able to do pretty much anything).
Vista and Windows 7 are way better than XP. The Office 2007 ribbon is a massive improvement from the old interface (though it does throw people off at first). - gcnaddict, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5Exactly.
Apple's Pages aren't a thousand times easier and more intuitive. For that matter, neither is a vast chunk of Apple's software. Yes, it all looks visually stunning, but in terms of usability, it's not thought-out. - EtherGnat, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Djgreedo is right. You need to download a free add-in from Microsoft for PDF compatibility in Office 2007 (the result of lawsuit threats from Adobe). Office 2010 will include support out of the box.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/14/2009, -3/+7...sucks!
There, I finished the sentence for you, with punctuation and everything. 8) - DarkShroud, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3It's the only good Office Suite and yes it will be free.
- HavocXphere, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Right, so MS is going to put a product making them *billions* on the web for free?
I'll believe it when I see it. I'm betting it'll be some half-baked way to store MS documents in the cloud and maybe fix a typo or 2. Either that or it'll be a DRM fest to link it to an installed copy of Office somewhere.
Oh, and it'll probably run better on Chrome... - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4I work with college students who use their own computers and emails, and I've been forced to use google docs because half of them haven't bought word.
And I would think opening a new tab is safer than downloading an attachment as well. - B1665r, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4I dunno, as far as the type of software you would find around an office setting goes, it seems rather... fair priced.
For typical generic ~office~ type software the market rate seems to be about $1000 a desktop no matter what it is. Be it some specialized database integrated label software, or... Cad programs start at about $1000 and go up from there. Adobe of course, is $1000 for the entry level creative suites. IIRC, the SMB version of video editing softare all starts at about $1000. Multi user accounting software seems to be about $1000 per seat...
So yeah, it is a hunk of money, but when you compare it to everything else in the SMB segment, it is not like it is a wild outlier. - yhKit, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3OMG! Your organs are so cheap.
Come on the version most popular only cost less than $100
http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q=office+home+ ... - MetricMike, on 07/14/2009, -2/+5I have. I played around with Live Calendar and Mail and will probably go back to it at some point. The big reason I'm not using it now is that I've gotten very integrated into gMail and Google Calendar and MS offers no easy solution to import and keep my functionality. When and if I catch a nice weekend, I'll likely move everything over and relearn anything I need to.
Also, Live Mesh is without compare. I accidentally found it while searching for a better backup/sync solution (humyo is horrendously slow and dropbox isn't really friendly towards synchronizing) and not only does it sync my documents folder (which is the only real unreplacement thing on my computer) in the background, it does it silently and without hogging resources. Not to mention I can remote desktop into my PC from any computer with IE7+ and .NET 3.5 and control my computer simply.
Microsoft may be the evil empire, but they do things right for me. Though, I have to grant that you are not me and you'll have different needs and experiences. - bsonline, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3I just hope I get into the testing program. Loaner laptop, preview software, and a chance to really help sculpt it into what I want.
- krisrm, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3I was under the impression Office was some sort of software suite filled with productivity tools... I learn something new every day on the internet!
... - DarkShroud, on 07/14/2009, -3/+5Linux users should be happy, they'll finally get to use MS Office on a normal basis when this comes out. No bugs or hiccups from WINE, it will just be able to run. I've tried to use Open Office and Google Docs as a free alternative but they don't work well at all.
- Acqua206, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2An invaluable change from 03 to 07 was the formula suggestion in Excel. That alone probably made the upgrade worthwhile. I don't know the exact lettering of all the formulas I need but the autocomplete feature is extremely helpful.
- muffinmonk, on 07/14/2009, -3/+5Microsoft does its stereotypes well. It will be successful.
I know. - krisrm, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3An article with "Google" in the title, and not one random speculation (though they provided a link to presumably a page full of them) about Chrome OS. Dugg!
- Alegoo92, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Actually, knowing Microsoft, they may require IE AND silverlight.
I'm not hateful of them, but they do do unnecessary things to get users to download their products, like making Silverlight a requirement to view previous pictures on bing.com - FairDinkumMate, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3Microsoft stereotypes - That's my issue. I don't trust Microsoft to secure my data via a web connection!
They've had how many goes at IE & yet every 3 months another gaping hole is revealed in its security. With that sort of online track record, why would you ever risk your business by trusting them to get this right first time(if ever)? - kopiwrite, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Does Microsoft Office make it easy to export to PDF yet? I remember that was one of my favorite things about OO when I first started using it. I could never figure out why Office didn't make it easy to do this...and I donno about everyone else, but I print to PDF way more than print to paper
- B1665r, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3No... I am certain it will require Silverlight 3, if only to piss you guys off.
- crapiolio, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Microsoft already announced that it will work w/ Firefox and Safari.
- astrotrain, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Oh and don't forget how Office puffs up your HTML code to at least 80% more.
Go ahead write a standard "helloworld.html" doc, then load it and save it with MS Office. Then open the document with a standard ASCII editor.
You will be surprised how much junk is thrown in there by Word so this .html document can be...."MS Office Friendly" - djgreedo, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1@ metricmike
The one big problem with Live services is that Live Calendar doesn't sync with Outlook Mobile. I have my contacts, email, favorites, etc. all syncing between web, PC, and phone, but I actually have to sync my Live Calendar to my Goolgle calendar and sync the Google calendar to my phone!
And yes, Live Mesh is great. - B1665r, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Here is a tutorial to write that Macro...
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3563/microso ... - yhKit, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1There are things that pure HTML and javascript can't do...
We can hope the best for HTML5 would fill the gap. - Korayem, on 07/25/2009, -0/+1They already are tweaking the web version to support firefox and safari. Too bad chrome is still in beta stage..
- HimThatSpeaks, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Old meme but I will bite. It can play Crysis with a very sophisticated macro.
- DarkShroud, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Moonlight, though that was be pretty damn funny it if did.
My statement would also apply to Mac users who don't like the interface of MS Office on the Mac. - RPGmaster, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1When I first read your comment I thought you where saying that OO made it hard to export to PDF... disregard my last reply...
/embarrassed - RPGmaster, on 07/14/2009, -2/+3Whats so hard about pressing the button and selecting where to save it?
- gcnaddict, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1He did some interviews, too:
http://www.vimeo.com/797329 - gamepr0, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2In reply to the negative comments:
Dear (fellow) mac and/or linux users and web developers. Altough Microsoft's OS and browser may be horrible in your oppinion, Microsoft still makes the best office suite for windows, no doubt. - astrotrain, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2...but but... haven't you seen the wonderful Windows commercials of people shopping at Best Cry to say "There a PC"?
I'm not a fanboy of Windows, Mac, or Linux....but what a waste of time, that does not impress me to run out and purchase a Vista laptop. - yhKit, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl9kD693ie4
- gamepr0, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Microsoft will find a reason to force you to install silverlight before using it.
