- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -6/+48For all of you out there who say "Linux is irrelevant" or "Linux only has 10 users".....evidently Microsoft doesn't see it this way.
Desperation is a foul odor.... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32this means war!
- knomevol, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25now is the time for google to do no evil.
clash of the titans! - locnguyen, on 10/11/2007, -11/+30I can only hope the other 800lbs gorillas of the software industry stand and fight the Microsoft collective.
Give them nothing, and take from them...everything >=0 - dixta, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23Actually he looks more like one of those guys standing in the street with a "REPENT! THE END IS NIGH" signs. Appropriate, really.
Seriously though...... I think Microsoft is very slowly sinking, and they're wanting to go out kicking and screaming. Ballmer is an ass, there's no two ways about that, and he's just proving yet again that Microsoft's sole strategy for getting ahead is gutlessly eliminating the competition and then standing on the corpses to prop themselves up a little higher.
What's worse than buying a share in Microsoft?
Buying two shares in Microsoft. - mastercheif, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Lol, Microsoft sounds like the USSR, and FOSS sounds like Springsteen
Keep on rockin` in the open source world! - dogstar0125, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17FTA "Gutierrez refuses to identify specific patents or explain how they're being infringed, lest FOSS advocates start filing challenges to them."
I suppose that this means that Gutierrez is not confident that the 235 patents in question will withstand a court challenge. Microsoft knows that there is no merit in their patent claims. They are simply trying to use the cost of litigation to break the FOSS community. - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -11/+23OIN will crush them, but they just try to create FUD.+
- sk545, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Here we go again, SCO didn't work out, and so it goes....
So, what step are we at now?
1) First they ignore you (check)
2) Then they laugh at you (check)
3) Then they fight you (guess we will remain here for a while). - JimV, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17I've never seen a picture of Richard Stallman before. He looks like one of those dudes on the corner with a sign asking for change.
- GregR, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15I wonder how many of these 'infringements' are the same ones that Apple tried to protect when MS came out with the first version of Windows?
- knomevol, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14i have been actively refusing to purchase any new music, and i don't steal it from 0day, i just don't listen to it.
starve them all.
i won't be renting any of microsoft's bloatware either. - ryancxx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12This is sure to stop people hating on MS!
- dude187, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12@estvir
"Ah, and yet again Quix is on the sidelines hurtling insults and not even attempting to add anything."
Please kindly point out what you have contributed to this article comments wise...
You call people trolls, while trolling yourself. Who were you calling a hypocrite again? - Quix, on 10/11/2007, -16/+23Ah, yet again schestowitz and estvir go head-to-head in a Digg astroturfing battle royale! Who will fling the most FUD today?
Schestowitz prepares his list of MS-savaging URLs. Estvir waits for the defensive play call from his MVP coach in Redmond. Will FOSS or Microsoft win the most talking points posted? Can't wait to find out! - malkir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Microsoft has been doing this since 2004...and it's still news now? It's just more FUD & they know they don't have a case.
- JimV, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7What if MS is doing this just to get a case about frivolous patents into the courts? MS has been the target of plenty of patent suites in the past. Probably a win-win situation for them. If they win, they crush Linux. If they lose, they get a case that sets precedent to dismiss patent cases that may come up against them.
- twodayslate, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Microsoft will only increase Linux's popularity by going public with this. Good job M$!
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12You've just earned the second spot on my blocklist, right next to 7of7!
This is certainly a high honor! - fuse13, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6You know, Microsoft had that problem with that Eolas patent and what did they do? They abided by it and now we have to click on Flash to activate it. It cuts both ways.
- dixta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Correct..... X is just an "application" that runs on Linux (and other OSs).
- Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@wageslaven
ME! I DO!
Digg me up if you agree and we'll see how many hate MS :D - tboutcher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4So Michael Dell can't afford Windows? And Linux users are to dumb to pirate windows but smart enough to figure out how to setup Linux since its "not easy to setup"
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8@wageslaven: You can attack users on an individual basis all you want.
That doesn't get around that fact that you came far short of making a case for defending Microsoft and their scumbag business practices. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@masterchief
you mean neil young... - thectrlfreak, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7How about we sue Microsoft every quarter for having a monopoly on the Operating System industry?
They might rethink allowing _some_ integration into their systems. I don't know much about the patents involved, but I'd be pretty sure they would involve being able to integrate with Microsoft products. IF they hold the monopoly and no-one can use alternate software, consumers have to buy their software. It's all about the money. - haid, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Then you win
- dixta, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Of course not........ Microsoft is just making a whole heap of noise to try and discredit OSS, and in the process, scare people away from using it because they think they'll have to pay royalties to MS.
Like I said before.... probably get dugg down for blowing smoke but Ballmer is a f*&king pig. Remember the little dummy-spit he had over Mark Lucovsky leaving to go to Google?
Quote:
"***** Eric Schmidt is a ***** pussy. I'm going to ***** bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to ***** kill Google."
Wah, wah, wah. Poor Steve Ballmer is losing staff so he throws a chair, and now MS is slowly losing market share and credibility as a provider of secure, reliable software.... so what's he doing? Going for the throat, trying to convince everyone that Linux is only reliable and secure because writes of OSS "stole" patents from Microsoft, and trying to scare people away. He should have been a politician, not a software CEO.
Microsoft only gets ahead by discrediting its competition and scaring people away from alternatives. Sad state of affairs really, I hope Microsoft just dies a slow, agonizing death (metaphorically speaking) over the coming decade. - dixta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3GNU's Not Unix.
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Microsoft timed this well. They held back just to give them some time to throw the punch. Hopefully most of the patents will be thrown out. Thanks to this. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,270531,00.html
- behemothaur, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I first read this yesterday and it has taken a little while to sink in. While Linux desktops don't have the corporate install base of Windows there are far more critical devices out there for enterprise which are built out of Linux - typically appliances.
To give an example - all Nokia Checkpoint firewalls, the defacto standard for many of the world's investment and retail banks, are built on IPSO which is basically a hardened and customised version of Linux. The list of critical enterprise security and other appliances built on some linux distro (mainly BSD & Debian) is very long and probably surprising to many. The overall costs of replacing these devices in terms of both capex, training and downtime/staff hours will be so huge that corporates will simply pay whatever tax Microsoft wants to place on them if they win enforcability on any of these patents.
Now that is something that I would bet on and makes more sense from Microsoft's standpoint than going after the home or SME linux users. The irony here is that it is the Linux desktops that I assume are in breach of most of the patents MS is going after are due to their ability to connect into MS networks etc. The appliances I mentioned above have little or absolutely nothing in common with Windows systems. - dixta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4(opinion)
Xerox practically GAVE the GUI to Apple. "Meh, sif invest money in a 'mouse', let Steve Jobs look at it."
PARC weren't happy, but hey, it's what Xerox told them to do.
MS stole it from Apple, plain and simple.
It's like your neighbour giving you the transcript to a novel coz they're not interested in capitalising on it, then some ass monkey stealing a copy of the transcript off you saying "WELL YOU GOT IT FOR FREE TOO!"
MS are a pack of whiny, sleazy little pigs. They have absolutely no class whatsoever, so they have to cut down those with a little panache to steal the limelight themselves.
(/opinion) - Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I don't even think Steve Ballmer does.
- Quix, on 10/11/2007, -9/+11"Ah, and yet again Quix is on the sidelines hurtling insults and not even attempting to add anything."
Hmm, I don't see any insults in my post ("Estvir's mom loves Windows 98!" - there's an insult for you), and no, I have nothing to add to the Microsoft vs. Linux war. I'm just hear to see the Schestowitz/Estvir show. Two of Digg's most prominent shills doing what they do best. - robbiemuffin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6I really enjoyed this article, it was very well written and not overly biased.
I can see a supreme court case coming on this, sooner or later, and it being the biggest thing in that court since Row. - Eggman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6@itsabou (#6684408) said: " I run Linux Fedora Core.I can do everything and more than a windows user. One thing I don't have to do is pay top dollar for bloated, buggy software. This is a sure sign that Msoft is begining to worry about folks like me."
So you get buggy, bloated software for free?
(not hating Linux just his phrasing) - dixta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow. I'm surprised I'm even wasting my time to grace your stupidity with a response.
OK, so if Dell are offering Linux on their new PCs..... maybe you should go tell Michael Dell to step down so you can take his place, seeing as you have such a nose for strategy.
When it comes to stability and security, Windows is a joke, and costs (in AU$) a few hundred bucks to boot (pun intended). Ubuntu is a great distro for people who want a fully functional, stable, powerful, fluid, secure and attractive operating system, without having to pay through the ass to get it.
Linux as a whole, however, is the typical fare of people who are serious about computing, about development, and generally know what the hell they're doing. Think of it as someone who knows how their car works as opposed to just driving it (and having to call Roadside Assistance to change a tyre for them).
Know what you are talking about before you go making a complete asshat of yourself in front of a community who are collectively well experienced with both Windows and Linux. - AnthonyRyan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Is it just me or does everyone else hate this company too?
- dixta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2How many patents do you think Microsoft has violated or is currently violating?
I'd LOVE to see THAT number. - whurley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Just consider what a day without open source would be like - http://digg.com/software/A_Day_Without_Open_Source
- TheMachine1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Anybody have links to a website that list what precise patents MS maybe talking about?
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ GNU's not UNIX, and it is not Windows either :)

Neil Young actually...
Keep on Rockin' in the Free (Open Source) World - knomevol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1balmer ain't no de'raadt.
- dixta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu FTW.
I agree though.... Linux would get much better acceptance if a few basic usability problems were ironed out, so that the "average user" doesn't ever have to face even a slightly cryptic problem.
But games? Pfff, go buy a console. It's a hell of a lot more fun to have a few mates over for some Double Dash on the gamecube than it is to lock yourself in your parents garage with a $3,000 gaming rig and play online.
(Not a stab at you Giveen, just a comparison).
Oh and yeah, for Linux, ATI definitely sucks ass. - Zbug, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4"Keep on rockin' in the free world."
- dixta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Apparently coking yourself up before a presentation and dancing around stage with big boggy sweaty armpits is how the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company behaves.
If I was in the crowd, I would have been clapping back "deodorant, deodorant, deodorant, deodorant." -
