- Kanuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18You're not seeing the big picture if you think this is just a table—my mind, for one, was just absolutely blown.
Computing has made huge advances over the past few decades, yet we're still using the same dated input technologies and interfaces that create a barrier to mainstream adoption. Many people are simply uncomfortable with technology.
But interfaces like this are much more intuitive and inclusive for normal people. Files, folders, icons, transfer cables—these are all just abstract concepts we've invented, so if you don't know anything thing about them, there's a steep learning curve, even for a simple task like transferring a file from a digital camera to a mobile phone.
"Put the camera on the table, put the phone on the table, move the photo to the phone"—there's no learning curve there. My grandmother could do that. And that's the power of what we're seeing here.
Amazing stuff. Maybe Kamen should've invented this instead of a glorified scooter... - limpidezza, on 10/28/2007, -2/+10Whether you love or hate Microsoft, multi-touch looks like it's going to be a huge step forward in interface technology. I can't wait until we start seeing more consumer applications for it...
- Kanuck, on 10/28/2007, -3/+10Why does everything on Digg have to be about Apple? This has nothing to do with Apple, yet the description and half the comments are already iPhone this, iMac that.
As a Mac user myself, It's embarrassing. - mattvogt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+56 months later? Are you kidding? This has been in development (in house) from 2001 (as is PRE-ipod).

- Blabster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5THIS THING IS FUKING AWESOME!
It deserves the caps. What truly amazes me is not the touch screen but the seamless communication of devices that can happen with this form of computer technology. Truly one of a kind. - twe4ked, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I don't read the comments on digg normally because they are really mac bias, I don't hate macs in any way but "I" like Microsoft personally more but I had to log in when I happened to read your comment. Common man, Apple have done this on multiple occasions and as mattvogt said Microsoft have been developing this since 2001. I can think of one example off the top of my head - OSXs dashboard feature, this was seen as the biggest thing when in reality I have been using a VERY similar system for years before OSX was released with 'konfabulator' so please, get your facts right and don't become just another bias apple fan boy (like the apple ads) one sided stories are for the weak minded and only make people think less of you.
-=twe4ked. - Echuta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3My bad. I'm retarded...Feb 2006 is when that was filmed.
- vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I. Am. Impressed.

This is really fascinating stuff and I can't wait to see what it brings. With every new product that starts to embrace this technology, there will be a whole new market and business opportunities for accessories (much like what happened with the ipod and other mp3 players) so it is something to keep an eye on for sure. - badcop666, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't want to sit around it! I can see that being SO useful and cool on the wall of my kitchen - I would use it 4 or 5 times every day, probably 4 or 5 times in the morning and then in the evening it would be a console for music, video, television, controlling the house environment ( turn/control on EoP-aware devices ) and just looking up stuff like movie times, when the kids are playing sport, incoming emails (or txt's if my phone is in blue tooth range) and it could play photo galleries when it was idle, skype video calling
wicked.
at $5-10k US I'd say one of these will be in my kitchen in the next 1-2 years. - Echuta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This was out August 06: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/65
- andyd273, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I just want them to make it affordable...
I know that in the short run only businesses will be able to afford it (some say $10k price tag) but PLEASE Microsoft, come up with a home version that the average person will be able to afford. - J0e3gan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree with you, Kanuck. This is mind blowing. I watched with my hands on my head as if I was being reinitiated to Michael Jordan's magic.
- Korayem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@Kanuck:
If apple wasn't mentioned in the description, this Digg wouldn't have made it to the top! - jivetrky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm sure there will be....
I was actually amazed at how low the quoted prices were for it. I saw a vid at popularmechanics.com (http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/industry/4217348.html) that said they'll cost between $5,000 and $10,000
IMO, that's not bad for a new product like this...not to mention the fact that it's initially aimed at business and commercial applications. I'm sure it'll trickle down to us before too long. - Tinu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was hypnotized. I agree with bad cop though, I'd want it on a wall rather than the table. Back problems.
- Dids, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It isn't actually a touch-screen device, it simply uses five cameras located in the table's base to record movement and touch.
"Turns out that Surface isn't actually a touchscreen at all, but uses five cameras located in the table's base to record movement and touch. 'The five cameras are near-infrared devices, but that's not because they are trying to read heat signatures from fingertips (or other body parts) on the table. Instead, it's because the entire surface of Surface is bathed in light; by illuminating the top of the table, the cameras can easily see when things are placed on it. Shining colored light across the surface of the table would spoil the effect that Microsoft wants, so near-infrared light is used for invisible illumination. The whole setup runs on a Core 2 Duo and off-the-shelf hardware, and can handle 52 simultaneous touches." -Slashdot - adc86, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Ok, use your advanced linguistic skills and substitute "do" for "announce."
- hendo1769, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Now that Microsoft is taking us into the future and everything, I want my hoverboard.
- Hupaju, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I can't wait to see the applications for people in the illustration and digital art world. Think about what Photoshop or Corel Painter would be like on this thing.
- G5Unit91, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Anyone see this becoming a hit in crime labs?
- elitegrunt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'm looking forward to interactive porn
- xtraa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I love it and it is NOT from Microsoft. They just sell it.
Thanks Han. I loved your presentation of 'Microsoft' Surface ... on OS X some month ago :D - pygar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1this is boring crap
- ildreancipher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I cant wait for my coffee table to show the Blue Screen of Death.
Seriously though, this is awesome - coolyo77, on 03/10/2008, -0/+0this is sweet!
- badcop666, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2the only thing small and portable is your mind you moron.

************************************************************** - ShadeJon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I believe they bought this technology. I remember seeing things like this a few years ago. Also, Phillips' Entertaible is quite like this.
Yehuda - mishsquish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1That's incredibly cool. I'd sit on Defcon 24/7.
- luken3000, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Please, sync my iPod without booting a PC and plugging in a USB! Then, figure out how to charge it while it's on the table...
- ronnsprocket, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2...and we thought ipods had expensive accessories.
- adc86, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Because Apple is clearly going this way with the iPhone. They could have used a miniature qwerty keyboard, or Palm like input mechanism, but they didn't. They designed the OS around multi-touch. For them to do that, and then Microsoft to do the same thing six months later is gonna raise some red flags in the copy-cat-accuser group.
- mgkwho, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2The touchscreen technology battle just got a whole lot more heated. Kind of.
I'm curious to see how it is technically different from that Han? guy and Apple.
Notably, this is costly and not designed for home use.
-=|Mgkwho - lpicanco, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2So Good.
I'm curious to see it. - auxplage, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Hopefully the next iMac from Apple will incorporate an interface similar to this.
- adc86, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Common-- Microsoft isn't exactly known for its ability to "get" stuff like drag and drop. Until we can all play with one of these, I think it's hard to judge. Microsoft doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt either in their favour or against them.
- HMTKSteve, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2The "seamless" integration of wi-fi enabled devices already exists on computers!
- sinbonders, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Well, rather simply, Apple has been getting increasing press on its studies in multi-touch technology and more recently its use in the iPhone. There are popular videos of these studies and everyone wants to see where Apple is taking it. The fact that Microsoft was far less public about their use and have released this a surprise begs for comparison, especially on such a site as Digg.
Hope that explains how this does have something to do with Apple. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Buried as spam.
Popular Mechanics, U.S. Government and News Media were all in on the 911 conspiracy.
Popular Mechnics Deserve No Traffic - kenkyomausu, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Classic Microsoft,
Oh yeah, its called multi touch! It been around for Years! We've been using it for like 30 years now. Can you believe that apple's just now getting it? - mannymix03, on 10/11/2007, -13/+3so instead of cramming this into a small portable, they put it into a table? *sigh*

What is Digg?
