- HAL9891, on 11/20/2008, -7/+423So instead of pirating Windows 7 to get it for free, people will be pirating it to get it without ads.
- ZeMoose, on 11/20/2008, -6/+262If the alternative to having to pay for it is to be offered an operating system that's riddled with ads, then I judge payment to be totally worth it.
- NickAv, on 11/20/2008, -59/+294lol redmond giving ***** away for free?
i'll consider that when me ***** turns purple and tastes like rainbow sherbet - Superperson, on 11/20/2008, -2/+196Oh please. If MS did this all of Digg would be bitching about the ads.
- dingedarmor, on 11/20/2008, -5/+199Me thinks someone was smoking way too much wacky tobaccy....

- serif69, on 11/20/2008, -3/+83Most people I know wouldn't even be able to tell the difference, their machines are so infected.
- spenner, on 11/20/2008, -4/+77I like the principle but how would you expect this to work?
On startup "Welcome to Windows...Sponsored by Pepsi Cola"...Picture of David Beckham fades in ?
You open up a notepad file and it there is it has a list of sponsors down the right hand side?
Stop the option to set Google up as your homepage?
Ban Firefox from being installed?
And also, when you said that they dominate 90% of the market, and their aim will be to convert as much of this market into paying customers. Shipping boxes is what Microsoft do. Relying on noobs clicking advertising links is a google strategy. - Czechxican, on 11/20/2008, -3/+74Yeah I was like ***** that. Like what would that even be like? Instead of the windows boot up song, you'd have to listen to the meow mix jingle.
- Luminoth545, on 11/20/2008, -11/+82Assuming Microsoft releases an ad-supported OS, the world will end. Businesses use Windows, and the OS is already shaky and unpredictable. Adding advertisements would only worsen the problem beyond repair.
- havek23, on 11/20/2008, -0/+65I like that it lists 1 thru 5 and then says the answer is E... nice going, Slick.
- Kershek, on 11/20/2008, -2/+66They give a lot of stuff away for free.
- Paranor01, on 11/20/2008, -2/+50if they do do this.. within 24hrs they'll have a patch to turn the ads off..
hell, probably be as simple as modifying the HOSTS file and put the ad server to localhost :) - TheZorch, on 11/20/2008, -4/+52Android
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -3/+49They will give you wga and drm for free
- Tddupre, on 11/20/2008, -0/+43If ppl wanted ads on their machine they wouldn't buy programs to get rid of adware
- jhandfield, on 11/20/2008, -5/+48So who gets to sponsor the bluescreens?
- dave122, on 11/20/2008, -2/+45No. I'd rather pay $300 for a license that I will use for a few years than look at ads for 8 hours a day.
- fxu1989, on 11/20/2008, -2/+44>> During that same time Google made $4 billion and has been developing an ad-centric operating system that will not only compete, but dominate if Microsoft doesn’t market software differently than they have in the past.
How about that Chrome... has it dominated the browser market yet?
Just because it's from Google it doesn't mean it will dominate. Stop sucking on their balls so much. - TheDeepFriar, on 11/20/2008, -1/+39No, please. Ad-supported free is bad.

- AaronCo, on 11/20/2008, -3/+39They don't have to give it away for free, but it certainly shouldn't be $300 (retail) for the "good version" like Vista is. Nobody wants to pay that, so the only ppl that end up with it are the suckers that get it w/ their machine. That ties OS sales to new computer sales, which is not the smartest thing to do. They need to sell Windows 7 for a fraction of the price, $49/oem, $99/retail.
That would dramatically increase sales, it wouldn't feel like such an expense and more ppl would be willing to give it a try. They could make up revenue on the back end somewhere, I'm sure. - M4dRefluX, on 11/20/2008, -2/+38Microsoft announced recently they were giving away free anti-virus

After getting my head back together and getting to the point where you stopped reading I came to the same conclusion.
Would they want them to keep tabs on your "trends" of what you use your computer for so they can better target you with ads?
How would they be sure that none of those ads will be spyware or better yet, be able to exploit their OS? - marksands07, on 11/20/2008, -0/+25https://www.dreamspark.com/default.aspx

- cochonnerie, on 11/20/2008, -0/+19I agree, it's a dumb idea. Ad supported OS? I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole. And who would advertise on it? What makes Google so affective is that ads are served based on context/what you're searching for. It's difficult to imagine how MS could accomplish this through windows - ads based on the software you use? lol!
What MS needs to do is sell one universal version of Windows 7 and price it at $75-100. It also needs to get rid of the bloat... and it needs to open itself up (at least partially) to the open-source world to save costs. -
