- Crimsoneer, on 10/10/2007, -20/+120Am I the only person who finds it bizarre that MS has to do this but apple doesn't?
- IShouldBeWorkin, on 10/10/2007, -9/+60My understanding on the situation is that Microsoft can still appeal to the highest court in the EU, which they will almost certainly do. So the issue is far from over at this point.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+61Why aren't Apple getting sued for the same thing?
- lukasmack, on 10/10/2007, -4/+45I don't like microsoft but come on, apple get away with it the new ipods don't work with all operating sytems in apples eyes.
- swifty383, on 10/10/2007, -25/+58What a bunch of BS. Microsoft is legally obligated to help their competitors?
- j1a1g1, on 10/10/2007, -8/+35What secrets?
- ZSX1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27A few word changes...
"Apple must disclose its secret computer codes to enable rival companies' media players to work seamlessly with iTunes when downloading songs and videos."
...and that actually makes more sense to me. - course6, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24I'm sure the programmers at Microsoft are just as good as the programmers at Apple. However, you layer beacracy, management, marketing, idiodic legacy support, and even the best engineers end up shipping absolute *****.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -9/+30Why, what secrets does WMP actually have? Seems to be hundreds of alternative media players that are able to function. Unless it means they have to reveal DRM stuff, and the only 'good' thing about that is it sets a precedent Apple will hopefully have to face too.
- Motocompo, on 10/10/2007, -8/+28I think the comments on that site might be from Microsoft employees :P
- MewtwoReturns, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Secret codes?
Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start. - Rikkochet, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22Because all but one of the comments up to this point are "wah wah wah I hate M$" and nothing substantial.
- zboog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Apple does have the lion's share of the portable media player market - so Crimsoneer isn't far off the mark
- AlexFerny, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17iTunes is dominant not because its a good media player, but because it is required in order to use the ipod and the itunes music store...
EU will probably go after Apple over iTunes next :) - biliabong6, on 10/10/2007, -18/+32Im not a big user of Microsoft, but this is really unfair to the company. They should not have to release information about their operating system. Just because it is the most used, and they have a monopoly does not mean that they should penalized. Tell Sansa, or Creative, or iRiver to make their own operating system if they want full compatability. Its okay for Mac to use the Halo effect to incorporate their iPod brand, but if Microsoft does it they are slammed and fined? That makes no sense. Everyone is just jealous of Microsoft's success and want a lil bit of the pie. Call Microsoft the bully or whatever, but they have a strong business model and should not be punished for it. Maybe soon Microsoft will have to release the Halo3 source code so Sony can port it...
- pathy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14There's a higher court they can appeal to.
- shark615, on 10/10/2007, -9/+21I feel sorry for you, I truly do. Microsoft is a company that makes an operating system for a computer. If you are too stupid to use it properly or don't like it there are dozens of alternatives for you to choose. But to hate something his just stupid. It is a product get over it, move on get a life, anything.
- lavagod, on 10/10/2007, -16/+26I really don't understand why people hate MS so much. Maybe I'm bias being an MS Developer but I look at them just like any other business.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+17it is when it comes to mp3 players.
- drjones78, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10They have been going after Apple and iTunes for quite a while now... They're way ahead of you;)
- dinostabOMG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Can you please articulate why you hope so?
- Amablue, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10The reason most people hate MS is that they unfairly use thier monopoly (or near monopoly) to push thier own agenda which is often very detrimental to end users or other companies. For example, OOXML. It's a bad standard tha MS tried to push so that they could use it as leverage later for their own purposes instead of making a standard that actually works.
- lsatkins, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15Because Apple OS and computers aren't important enough. Yeah the iPod does well, but beyond that no one gives two ***** about Apple.
- Kwinti, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10How come Microsoft is releasing all of this code, yet Apple is still restricting the iPod to iTunes?
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12A one click play button, which Amazon is in the process of patenting.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It has the secret of how to be used as a media previewer in Explorer.
It has the secret of being called whenever you use a WMP MFC dropin.
You can make VLC open whenever you double-click on a media file, but you can't make it power the preview function in Explorer. LIkewise, you can make Fx your default browser, but it is still IE that drives your Active Desktop and interprets your in-application HTML interpretation (e.g. help system).
That's the whole issue here -- that it, and IE and WMP, are integrated into, and connects with, various OS-level APIs that other media players (and browsers) can't touch. You can replace them for certain tasks, but you can't remove them from the system, or windows will no longer run. - schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I don't know about you, but I'll take IE over Netscape any day...
- cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Open Source is a choice, not a mandate.
- shark615, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Im sorry but at the time IE was a much better browsers. Nutscrapes offerings were outdated, slow and buggy which helped its demise as much as IE being bundlded.
Example: Firefox. A better, initially, product that is clawing back some ground. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Hating Microsoft is as stupid as hating Apple. Use what works for you and stop worrying about what other people do.
- jeffyjones, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Can someone point me to the place that says you can't run other media players on Windows?
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15Apple doesn't have 95% of the market share. Although I agree that all companies should be held to roughly the same standards, no one is going to care until Apple has significantly larger market share.
- course6, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Do you realize what this is even about? Why don't you read Wikipedia before saying something stupid. How about a story?
Nestscape navigator is a very popular browser. Microsoft decides to not only bundle Internet Explorer with their OS (and demand Navigator *not* be bundled on OEM machines), but it also ties IE functionality INTO the Windows OS. No matter how hard the programmers at nestscape try, they can't do some things IE does that are tied to the OS. That is what is considered unfair.
And then what happens what navigator dies? We don't see another ***** IE update, until the year 200-*****-7, and only because of Firefox's surge in market share. - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I would agree. The way the article was worded made little sense. There are several alternatives to wmp and as far as I know, several of them (QuickTime and its better known big brother iTunes as well as others) work just fine. If you're going to go after Microsoft for monopolistic practices, why start with media players?
Frankly if the EU forces the media companies to ditch DRM (from both Microsoft and Apple) to allow better operability, it wouldn't break my heart. I wonder how the media companies (the real reason why either MS or Apple has to use it) would respond? - thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12How long until Microsoft says.... "Ehhh.... It's not worth selling to Europe any more." ?
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8"the EU wants to force Microsoft to reveal its Windows source code"
Um, no. All the EU has asked for is complete specifications of Microsoft's secret communication protocols. They specifically stated that they *don't want source code*. - browman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Wow, those comments... I frikkin hate daily mail readers... self righteous, and dumb... nice combo!
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Believe it or not Microsoft employees post to Digg too.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8kelly stick to the kitchen. Digg isn't working out too well for you.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8@MacParrot: By same reasoning MS is not a monopoly because there are other competing OS.
- CircleFusion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7For me, they are not responsible enough with their near-monopoly position in the software industry. Lack of development of IE6 was one of many examples of that. They also appear to have shady business practices. They don't have a focus on establishing standards. They make many business decisions that hurt the computer industry as a whole in the long run. Often, when they do the "right" thing for the computer industry, it is only because they are forced to by competitors.
I also believe that they maintain the top position in the industry more because of their shady business practices and vendor lock-in techniques rather than the quality of their software or services.
You can say I have mixed feelings about Microsoft. In the same breath, I can also state that they have done a lot to advance the software industry and raise the bar in many ways. I also believe that Bill Gates is a true philanthropist and a good-hearted person. Still, that doesn't change what I said above. - louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Please realize that by typing M$ (or Shrub for Bush, democraps instead of democrats, etc) you end up looking like a total idiot to most people and no one will take your post seriously.
- OswaldKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Actually, Apple had a huge battle with France over the security of its devices.
- eyepower, on 10/10/2007, -9/+14precisely what I thougt... If their competitors are so great, let them produce their own operating systems built around their own products and everything will be hunky-dory
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8If the EU really wants to force competition, then use competing products. There are alternatives to just about every product or format created by Microsoft. Start using OS X or Linux. If Microsoft starts seeing legitimate competion from software maybe they'll make a better, less proprietary product. Frankly this just sounds a lot like whining.
- neodorian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Lessee....Apple:
1. Digital Rights Management
2. Stealing stuff from Xerox, Linux, Windows (they all influence each other ya know)
3. User account control is an attempt to get people to stop installing programs that run unwanted crap as root.
4. OK I agree with that one
5 ????
6. Bunk - ninetimes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I was assuming it meant any undivulged APIs that Microsoft makes available to their own divisions but not external companies.
- patrickray, on 10/10/2007, -13/+18What everyone has to realize is that If they lose, Then creativity and innovation will lose as well. Why should any company with a unique idea bring it to market if they will be forced to give away the secrets so that the other folks who couldn't do it themselves have a chance to play too? I am not a Microshaft fanboy, but If you spend the money and do the research, and come up with a brilliant business model, then shouldn't you get to profit from it? What's next? Dodge has to build their trucks so a Toyota transmission will work? Mercedes has to build their cars so that Ferrari engines will fit under the hood?
- timlopez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Using punctuation is gay too
