- foolfoolz, on 10/28/2008, -3/+20Even if microsoft is a big fighting monster, the products it offers in those areas are pretty much top notch.
- Windows is the most used OS in the world.
- MS's web services are used by many (not me..) and seem to stay afloat
- Silverlight blows the ***** out of flash, its only real competition.
- WMP is not my first choice but i would take WMP over itunes any day.
- Windows Mobile has its dedicated users
- Now cloud computing able to rent, this will become more common until the cloud trend dies
But you'll probably see the MS cloud service only allowing stuff for microsoft products/customers..
Not many other companies have tried to expand so widely and succeeded in those areas. Lets just wait and see who sues them for monopoly tactics next. (Opera is still suing MS for including IE with windows.) - machocheese34, on 10/28/2008, -0/+12game consoles too
- stutimandal, on 10/27/2008, -2/+14Microsoft versus Apple/Linux in OS
Microsoft versus Amazon/Google in cloud computing
Microsoft versus Google/Yahoo in web services
Microsoft versus Adobe in Flash/Silverlight
Microsoft versus Apple/SanDsik/Sony/Zen in media players
Microsoft versus Apple/Nokia/Google in mobile OS
No wonder Microsoft is thought of as a big fighting monster. - inactive, on 10/28/2008, -5/+17I see, if Google or Apple attempted this people would be like "***** YEAH"
But now that Microsoft attempts it, the homoerotic fan boys turn out with their fists in the air and their penises in Tux's direction - mrhahn, on 10/28/2008, -0/+8It's not really meant for personal usage. Think of a company that has to process some data, but doesn't want to purchase/configure servers just for one task. In this case they can just use Amazon's EC2 service (for example) to get the results.

- cplusplus, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5Doesn't "All" include Google itself? How can it be better than all others AND itself?
- pookpooi, on 10/28/2008, -0/+4**** YEAH
- hehdot, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3They pretty much have to push this hard and fight the competition off in all directions. They realize more than anything that if they don't step up now and defend their monopoly they could be living in a van down by the river in a couple of years. People are becoming more and more aware that computer != windows.
- 4321234, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3No. They need to find their real dad.
- svivian, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Who are Microsoft renting the cloud computing from? I think they mean "lease".
- pcpimpster, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2I'm loving the idea of scaling my apps in MS's cloud. As a .NET web and windows developer knowing I can use all the tools and launguages I'm use to and then being able to scale them as load increases almost completely eliminates the need to maintain servers and other administrative tasks associated with hosting the app myself.
This will blow many web hosts like godaddy out of the water if the price is right.
This could be worth it for the cost of SQL licensing and increasing scalability alone. - dogfood, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Windows won't be a cash cow forever. They have to at least try to compete in all these other arenas.
- Timmmm, on 10/28/2008, -1/+2WTF is this 'cloud' anyway? As far as I can tell it just a buzz word for 'the internet'.
- sadisticmind, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1its like the question "if god can do anything, can he make a bolder to big from him to carry?"
- caled, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1a big fighting monster? What, Godzilla?
- Eyebee, on 10/29/2008, -0/+1I use the cloud in quite a few ways these days. I store photos in Flickr; use only Gmail for my email; use Remember the Milk as a task Manager; Google Calender too. I store stuff both locally and in the cloud in Evernote. I check finances via Mint.com. It's perhaps getting to the point where I could simply use an almost dumb terminal that connects to the net, much like the systems of yesterday did in offices, when workstations really were dumb.
- sadisticmind, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Google> Everything else.
- falafelkiosken, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1don't forget web browsers
- linuxos77, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Ummmmmm Google is doing this. See Google App Engine.
- santaliqueur, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Yeah, it's like that question, except in English.
- santaliqueur, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Funny how whenever an Apple critic posts, ***** are always spoken about. Always.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Because most Apple users are sucking ones?
- mikedoth, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1I liked the concept of mainframe computing, still do. But would never allow a big company to house all of my data.
- nysus, on 10/28/2008, -1/+1A lot of people don't trust Microsoft, particularly developers. I know I'll take boring but rock solid technology built on free software over bleeding edge, buggy, proprietary software who's only goal is to extract as much money from you as they can get.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -1/+1That ***** made me hot man
- MAGZine, on 10/28/2008, -3/+3Why is Cloud computing in quotes? Didn't we popularize and establish this term a couple years back?
- wardude4, on 10/28/2008, -0/+0This isnt an original idea... IBM did this, then people moved away from the terminal sessions.. and now theres terminal emulators.. and its all coming back to cloud computing because its cheaper, and allows for convenience in terms of time availability...
- pookpooi, on 10/28/2008, -7/+7Microsoft should rent a Go Kart
- tortlord, on 10/28/2008, -1/+0I bid thee adieu
- StripeyMagee, on 10/27/2008, -14/+13Cloud computing will suck, it's nothing more than a mainframe platform giving the server complete control. ***** that, I want to run an OS of my choosing and store my data on my hard drive, thank you very much.
- mmx2000, on 10/28/2008, -4/+3There's already an article about this on the frontpage, and it's not that exciting a topic to be featured twice. Buried.
- thunderbacon, on 10/28/2008, -2/+0All your base are belong to ... Microsoft?
- fatas, on 10/28/2008, -8/+3They are set for an epic fail here Google using Linux servers would be able to give far more cheaper prices and expanded collection of tools.
- fatas, on 10/28/2008, -13/+8Also known as the biggest copy cat *****
- lolTroll, on 10/28/2008, -6/+1Google > All
