- dn11, on 07/08/2009, -2/+22...there are some paranoid mother ***** on the internet....
now carry on - AZRoboto, on 07/08/2009, -3/+22Battery life is actually worse on Linux, at least according to when Asus' EEE PC had the Linux option.
- Paranor01, on 07/08/2009, -0/+9If it wasn't for credit companies, hospitals, schools, etc etc etc... big brother wouldn't exist. All of your information is freely given by you to everyone. Big brother is everyone on this planet, not just one group (ie: government).
- TechnoRabbit, on 07/08/2009, -0/+9Oh, how I ***** hate people like you. I know I'm going to get dugg down for this, but I don't give a *****. I've read 1984 more times than any other book I've read, and I've read quite a bit. I hate people who go, 'omg, big brother!!!!' when they have no ***** grasp on the meaning of big brother in the book. Big brother is about control. Not invasion of privacy. Not knowing everything about you. Control. The surveillance was a small part of the book. The book was all about the government having absolute power, to the point of controling your language and through that your thoughts.
- newl, on 07/08/2009, -1/+10Apparently not available outside the United States as it is asking for a minimum 5 digit postal (ZIP) code which Australia does not have.
- overtoke, on 07/08/2009, -0/+9you type it in and press submit <POOF> they have your data
- Benno, on 07/08/2009, -3/+11partially true. ACPI is intentionally broken by OEMs so often Windows has an artificial edge. A properly configured machine will use less power with linux.
- strangewill, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7Damn I was hoping they'd use the internet to get to my computer, and through my power supply track the power in my walls throughout my house.
- strangewill, on 07/08/2009, -1/+7It says US only when you go to sign in.
- sauron256, on 07/08/2009, -1/+7Oh so obvious! If Hitler had only gone green he would have succeeded!
/s - PhairOh, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6The coolest thing about this to me is that this is Microsoft's first consumer-facing product entirely run on Azure.

The future possibilities of this platform are really pretty exciting. - newl, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6Not for me it didn't. It apparently knew I was already logged into Live Mail and populated the form data with my provided information.
- stephbu, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5Until it's public, Powermeter's nowt more than vapourware.
- FutureGuy, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5I am glad you did your research.
- sodade, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5All you morons laughing about how "paranoid" people are should go read up on LEOs monitoring power bills to look for people growing weed.
- pak314, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5They are probably working on some home automation system software and need statistical data. what better way than collect it from a large population set.
- Paranor01, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4@duckerjo7: Personal privacy should always be protected, and in raw data of things like usage to show a trend does not give up any privacy. What can be inferred by something like your electric usage on a personal level is how many electronic and electric devices you have, generally what they are by level spikes (clothes dryer, oven) and when you use them. And it's very hard to infer specific devices that would really matter a tinker's cuss to anyone else.
@ElAmo: you understood what I meant, so did others. grammar is good to have, but we're not writing essays or novels here. grammarnazi go home pls. - joshconsulting, on 07/08/2009, -3/+7They need to team up more of the power companies to show graphs of prices over time, detailed usage patterns etc. I'm sure the companies have such data, and it would be very helpful to show the average consumer how to save electricity - most people have very little idea how much energy their air conditioner etc. consumes and how they could save money; they just pay the bill at the end of the month.
- n1eb, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4Carbon footprints can hike to hell.
- bizzywho, on 07/08/2009, -1/+4This is the most clever name for an energy consumption manager!
- x713, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3@SuperCujo - how do you know I have no apps to run? I use her computer too and it runs for along time. I have virtualbox running, some wine applications, rhythmbox, pidgin, dropbox, firefox, komodo ide, miro, filezilla, etc. At least I am not here spreading fud. I am actually stating what I have working and why some of what you people state may be wrong in your assumptions.
- sauron256, on 07/08/2009, -2/+5[citation needed]
- sodade, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2Ballfield? Are you trying to be cute? Doesn't everyone know that our corrupt legal system monitors electricity usage trying to detect people growing a plant that the government has no business prohibiting?
- TechnoRabbit, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2No, it wasn't, you simpleton.
The primary means of control was through control of information. They were the only source for you to get information. They constantly altered history by altering the only way you could look up history. More than that, they were shaping the way you spoke to weed out undesirable words and concepts. Surveillance was simply a way of monitoring you to make sure you're with the program. - Paranor01, on 07/08/2009, -0/+2@sodade: we have our own ballfield ? must be nice.
And btw, I have several clues. Would you like me to share any with you? oh! Think I already did, and you threw something from left field to try to disavow the clue I gave you. So please enlighten us on your clue, so we can all see where your clue is coming from so we can also see if it's of any relevance.... thank you. - chicagospur, on 07/08/2009, -2/+4Yeah, but will it run on Al Gore's Mac?
- Robotron, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1My favorite feature of Mint.com is where you can compare your spending by category with different cities and states. It would be an even more effective feature in Hohm.
- PhreeStyle, on 07/08/2009, -1/+2Funny, I have never understood how spending and consuming more is better 'ecology.' and I further don't understand what people are doing with this 'new C02 tax' (taxing the air you breath?) they call 'carbon offset' to make the world more sustainable. The fact is the things that will make the biggest difference in carbon reduction is the reduction of consumption. And that just wont fly in the capitalist society of America, where the dollar is the bottom line. (consume yourself green? WTF? I'll bet you the software ships on CD/DVD in a cardboard box that is shrink wrapped - and that the manufacturing process isn't even close to green...)
- roxgod666, on 07/08/2009, -11/+12Microsoft is like a normal guy at work. Apple is the arrogant douchebag always saying how he's better than you, and how he's rich and premium. Linux is that annoying guy nobody likes who always nags, and tells you what to do.
- overtoke, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1which can still be done w/o a web server serving pages
- xbt7v, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Same here.
- alexsabree, on 07/08/2009, -2/+3I'm a huge Linux fan. But this is just ***** retarded.
I was going to go in-depth and explain why there's hardly any NOTICEABLE difference between the two. But why bother? If your not retarded you already know that jkmulloy is full of *****. - quikboy, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Yeah, because Microsoft never makes student editions that cost more than $150 (that I know of) and sometimes it's even free. There isn't even a need to discern from students and non-students for Hohm.
- ElAmo, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Surely Al is bootcamping, so yes.
- mark076h, on 07/08/2009, -4/+5How do they collect the data about your home power usage?
- Robotron, on 07/08/2009, -1/+2The hope is that with smart grid technologies coming online -- these connect your appliances to the grid through computer networks rather than old hard line wires -- the data will be more easy to incorporate.
- quikboy, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1This isn't a software product. It's web-based, if you actually read the article?
It's a wonder why if some people don't have much of a clue about something, you'd think they could just pop up a search engine and research it, instead of making some hasty snarky comments that are hardly true. - quikboy, on 07/09/2009, -1/+1Google doesn't 'always' beat MS to the punch. Bing Maps (formerly Live Search Maps) had traffic features, 3D color cities, collapsible pane, birds-eye view and other features before Google Maps got features like those. Chrome came after Internet Explorer. Live Search had image filtering tools in its search before Google. This among several other examples.
I'm just pointing out the truth. - MasterChi, on 07/08/2009, -4/+4They need to include more options for Heat Pump. I have dual fuel (electric and gas) so i wasn't sure if i should choose electric or gas.....needs an option for dual fuel systems or geothermal? Come on microsoft.
- anonymousmedic, on 07/08/2009, -3/+2I'm sorry dave. I cannot do that.
- SuperCujo, on 07/08/2009, -4/+3Cos you have no apps to run and use up battery life.
That said, it stumps me as to why my Dell Latitude lasts longer than similarly equipped Apple at work though. - Robotron, on 07/08/2009, -2/+1Yep, PowerMeter is Google's competing product.
- iJump, on 07/09/2009, -2/+1Hohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........
Hohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........
Hohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........ - skyshock1, on 07/08/2009, -2/+1I'm running it now. :P
- ElAmo, on 07/08/2009, -3/+1*weren't
save the subjunctive tense!!! - overtoke, on 07/08/2009, -4/+2they should release an app you can run locally on your own machine instead of forcing you to use a system that is so wasteful.
