Microsoft Demos "ADD TO DIGG" Feature in IE8
microsoft.com — Using the new "Activities" XML feature in IE8, users can right-click on any page and "ADD TO DIGG". Check out the screenshot on Microsoft's site! Other new IE8 features: Atom feeds in normal web pages using Microformats, Data URI support (fast page renders), CSS2.1 fully supports, and of course, tons of bug fixes...
- 1746 diggs
- digg it
- ralphlink, on 03/06/2008, -39/+1Page one info. lol.
- renesisx, on 03/06/2008, -0/+17I have no idea what you mean!
- afx1, on 03/06/2008, -13/+2"...as well as the JScript garbage collector and runtime..."
i like how microsoft is still refusing to call javascript, javascript.- FKnight, on 03/06/2008, -2/+14That's because it's not Javascript, it's Jscript, which is the Microsoft implementation of ECMAscript. Javascript is the Netscape/Mozilla implementation of ECMAscript.
- afx1, on 03/06/2008, -0/+8valid point, but in any sort of reference online, it's virtually never referred to as jscript. javascript, yes, and sometimes as ecmascript.
- FKnight, on 03/06/2008, -1/+7True dat. I always just call it Javascript too. If it quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it's still a scripting language that sucks.

- oenoneablaze, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5oh god...when this feature gets released Digg will get flooded by former AOL users like ralphlink here.

- RoxStar1968, on 03/06/2008, -10/+58Pretty convenient...
- PimpinOnWelfare, on 03/06/2008, -27/+11I don't want anyone using IE to digg ANYTHING.
- chrillen, on 03/06/2008, -4/+4Why?
- zongamin, on 03/07/2008, -2/+1Because that would mean they were using Windows and therefore be retarded
- slowmotiony, on 03/06/2008, -4/+4Well, ***** you.
- chrillen, on 03/06/2008, -4/+4Why?
- astrosmash, on 03/06/2008, -3/+34Digg has jumped the shark.
- nonymous666, on 03/06/2008, -9/+41TOO convenient. Everybody is going to be submitting EVERYTHING. As if the signal to noise ratio on Digg's 'Upcoming' pages wasn't bad enough.
- Hortnon, on 03/06/2008, -2/+22Yeah, because no one uses any FireFox, etc addons to already accomplish easier Digging, right?
- Konstantino, on 03/06/2008, -12/+5Yeah, but these people will actually be USING IE. This can only mean they're idiots and will submit idiotic content.
- ajchavar, on 03/07/2008, -0/+5whoops
- ajchavar, on 03/07/2008, -0/+5whoops
- cquinnd, on 03/06/2008, -0/+12And you expect to tell a difference how?
- ajchavar, on 03/07/2008, -1/+2ha, or someone will right a bug or script that will submit popups, spam and ads to digg via unwitting IE8 users
- Konstantino, on 03/06/2008, -12/+5Yeah, but these people will actually be USING IE. This can only mean they're idiots and will submit idiotic content.
- rompom7, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5Yeah, and it's not like it doesn't run on the digg API. The digg API was built to help make these kinds of tools...
- Hortnon, on 03/06/2008, -2/+22Yeah, because no one uses any FireFox, etc addons to already accomplish easier Digging, right?
- OwdenBowden, on 03/06/2008, -17/+4Yes it is since M$ and Digg are now BFbuddies with the Advert deal.
- theOster, on 03/06/2008, -6/+20STOP USING THE DOLLAR SIGN!!!
- SteveMax, on 03/06/2008, -1/+13Digg probably got at least S1000000 from that deal.
- theOster, on 03/06/2008, -6/+20STOP USING THE DOLLAR SIGN!!!
- EpicSelekta, on 03/06/2008, -13/+6Yeah, as if a significant amount of diggers use IE.
- Hortnon, on 03/06/2008, -3/+24Pretending a significant amount of Digg users don't use IE is just ignorant.
- mistergoomba, on 03/06/2008, -8/+1*cough*butt-kissers*cough*
- PimpinOnWelfare, on 03/06/2008, -27/+11I don't want anyone using IE to digg ANYTHING.
- Chadrew, on 03/06/2008, -39/+292Firefox has a plugin for that.
- jhaks, on 03/06/2008, -37/+11This isn't a plugin or activex control. It's just a little bit of really simple xml.
- Otto, on 03/06/2008, -2/+36Firefox plugins are usually just XML too, sometimes with javascript thrown in.
- tomj88, on 03/06/2008, -19/+6Why is everyone digging this dude down?
From what I have read of that page (I could be wrong...) is its some simple xml that a web developer adds to their page to add this functionality to any page with out the need for installing a plugin or activex control which is potentially more dangerous than a little bit of xml.- Otto, on 03/06/2008, -2/+10If so, then that's great. It's another security hole from Microsoft's wonderful IE dev team.
Web pages should not be able to add context menus to my browser.- capiCrimm, on 03/06/2008, -2/+19Would you like to bookmark this page? No you cannot go back. Would you like to bookmark this page? Why are you trying to close your browser? I'm afraid I can't allow you to do that Dave.
- Hortnon, on 03/06/2008, -3/+1And that's why a dialog box pops up to ask you if you want to add it.
Did you read the page?
"Install the Activity by clicking on the "Install" button on your website. This launches the installation dialog.
Check the "Make this my default provider" check box. This sets the Activity to appear in the top listing for Activities. " - Atomic1fire, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1Depends on if you trust the company doing it
Like if it was google asking you to add them would you trust them with your browser - natenovs, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1it's actually part of a new web standard. if you're going to blame someone, blame the right people
- greeniemeani, on 03/06/2008, -4/+2Because even though he is correct - Firefox "plugins" are usually just XUL(an XML format) and Javascript - , it's STILL CALLED A ***** PLUGIN.
- Otto, on 03/06/2008, -2/+10If so, then that's great. It's another security hole from Microsoft's wonderful IE dev team.
- iChainsaw, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4oops, digg me down.

Firefox Development team guy 2 -"what a great idea!! What should we call it?"
Firefox Development team guy 1 -"how about...TABS!"
Firefox Development team guy 2-"you sir -- oh, wait, you mean like InternetWorks from 1994, or UltraEdit Browser Interface from the same year?"
Firefox Development team guy 1-"***** off, no one will ever know!"
Oh, wait, did you say Opera, from 2000? Sorry, I wasn't listening.- patik, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I'm sure the Simpsons did it first anyway.
- iofthestorm, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Do you realize that netscape had tabs before it became firefox?
- op12, on 03/06/2008, -8/+64*sometime in 2001*
- kretik, on 03/06/2008, -4/+51997 called, he wants his grade school creative spelling back. After you're done with that, maybe you can tell us which browser was the first one to implement tabs. I'll give you a hint: it was based on Internet Explorer.
Retard.- neonstereo, on 03/06/2008, -3/+1neo****
- frazw, on 03/06/2008, -5/+3I refuse to believe that 1997 did call. I don't think 1997 actually wants that spelling back.
In fact I do believe that it is you that wants the aforementioned spelling but you are too shy to admit it.
Oh and who ***** cares who first implemented tabs? The people who did clearly don't and are probably glad their innovation took such a firm hold in all browsers.- kretik, on 03/06/2008, -2/+4I don't give a nad what you think. As to who cares who first implemented tabs, apparently the person I replied to thought it was very important, since he made a "joke" about it.
Now do me a favor and FOAD.
- kretik, on 03/06/2008, -2/+4I don't give a nad what you think. As to who cares who first implemented tabs, apparently the person I replied to thought it was very important, since he made a "joke" about it.
- renegadeafk, on 03/07/2008, -0/+3netcaptor
- RAdams, on 04/19/2008, -1/+0You fail it. The first 2 tabbed browsing engines had not a trace of Tritan, and were from 94, not 97. Thanks for playing!
- fredclown, on 03/06/2008, -0/+15According to Wikipedia an IE shell called NetCaptor was one of the first browsers to have tabbed browsing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabbed_document_inter ... - moush, on 03/06/2008, -4/+3Well, firefox copied it from someone.
- frazw, on 03/06/2008, -1/+6Interesting that despite the fact he didn't say, everyone assumes he is saying IE stole it from FF. Maybe he is but does it matter? There aren't many original ideas in the world. The important thing is that they didn't steal the code which does it. That my friends is unfair.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. - cquinnd, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1"copy" is perhaps too strong a word. Common ideas are often developed from a convergence of similar technologies and knowledge. The idea of tabbed interfaces existed long before browsers came along;
and they were an idea borrowed from the way businesses would index and sort information.
- frazw, on 03/06/2008, -1/+6Interesting that despite the fact he didn't say, everyone assumes he is saying IE stole it from FF. Maybe he is but does it matter? - chamberlanderic, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2avant bowser had tabs way before
- FutureGuy, on 03/07/2008, -0/+6IE5 was the first browser to support HTTPRequest object pretty much "inventing" this thing called AJAX, so every time you digg you invariably owe that functionality to IE.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XMLHttpRequest
Ohh and the "$" sign for MS, ingenious!!
- mancat, on 03/06/2008, -4/+59please provide a humorous anecdote describing how firefox borrowed the idea of tabs from opera.
- LightSpeed4, on 03/06/2008, -23/+3id rather not have the bloat in ff
ie > ff, built-in is better.- CoolGoose, on 03/06/2008, -2/+15You're not making any sense. You're accusing Firefox of being bloated because one feature that 1% of the users would use is in a plugin and not built in like in IE ? Omg.
- wigren, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Now I don't know math.
- frazw, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2I seriously wonder if anyone actually understands what bloated means anymore. Everywhere in the software community the word is thrown around. It has become the ultimate insult for software.
- tolbs, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I don't think you understand how firefox works. Everything visual is essentially composed of overlays on top of the core browser, you are extending the interface, not writing a separate component. If anything Firefox is not bloated because you can choose to add functions as you please. I would rather not have something built in, i'd rather be able to choose to add and remove components as i please. I'm not going to argue in that Firefox is bloated because it's resource intensive (although they are getting MUCH MUCH better with that).
- canthraxp, on 03/06/2008, -0/+13I give a crap about plugins, as long as I don't have to hack pages to make them run on IE6/7.
- Jade10145, on 03/06/2008, -11/+2To me it seems that firefox is the innovator in browsers...Microsoft just copies..tabbed browsing for example.
- wire02, on 03/06/2008, -2/+4I hope one day you will realize the irony of your statement
- HigherLogic, on 03/06/2008, -3/+1You do realize that Firefox copied tabbed browsing from Opera (who has been using it for more than a decade now).
- Atomic1fire, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1who probably got it from someone else
Search in a browser was not a new idea (thats why toolbars with search engines were created)
but having multiple ones in the same search bar and without installing it
became the popular idea which is why stuff like open search was created - sirhomer, on 03/06/2008, -1/+4No, Opera was not the first browser with tabs.
- HigherLogic, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2"Opera invented the precursor to tabs (in 1994), Page Zoom (1994), was the first browser to block pop-up ads (2000), first to add a Search field in the browser toolbar (2000), Sessions (1996), deleting private data (2000), Mouse Gestures (2000), User JavaScript (2005), BitTorrent support (2005), Widgets (2006), Speed Dial (2007), and much more."
--Opera Watch
- Atomic1fire, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1who probably got it from someone else
- frazw, on 03/06/2008, -2/+1Innovation comes from all over the place.
The best thing Firefox or any other browser with extensions do for us is "opening up" their browser in this way to aid discovery of new ideas by the community. - Jade10145, on 03/06/2008, -2/+1Sorry about that, thank you for the clarification, I really didn't know.
- lennybird, on 03/06/2008, -8/+27Once you go Firefox you never go back.
...It may not rhyme, but it's a fact.- chamberlanderic, on 03/06/2008, -4/+1except from the fact that it doesn't handle some pages layout very well
- tolbs, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I don't agree with that. It all depends on how the Page is designed. Most web developers I know start in Firefox and then test later in IE, implementing browser specific stylesheets and javascript. To me, thats the best way to go. If you were to start developing to IE and then wanted to make it compatible for Mozilla, Opera, Safari, etc. you are in a world of pain as there is a lot of specific function in IE that doesn't exist or is completely different in every other browser.
- prettyscripts, on 03/07/2008, -1/+0It is IE that doesn't handle page layout well.
- tnoy, on 03/06/2008, -5/+3I've never found any reason to use firefox over IE in terms of usability.
Every plugin I've used ends up adding an insignificant amount of value to me. "its a fact" - kenyan, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Hey, your whole spiel rhymed if that counts :)
- radish, on 03/07/2008, -0/+0It's not a fact. I went back, and I'll never touch FF again.
- chamberlanderic, on 03/06/2008, -4/+1except from the fact that it doesn't handle some pages layout very well
- masterthiefster, on 03/06/2008, -1/+25Yeah, but Firefox has a plugin for *everything*. Probably including your mother.
- prophetpimp, on 03/06/2008, -0/+10I think every guy has a plugin for your mom.
- SirFoxx, on 03/06/2008, -4/+1That's what she said
- SirFoxx, on 03/06/2008, -4/+1That's what she said
- iofthestorm, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Interestingly, when I installed IE8 it asked me if I wanted to import settings from my default browser, so I said yes, and then it asked about bookmarks, history, and addons. Addons? I was rather surprised, and then I found that it tried to recommend IE addons to replace the ones I had for Firefox. It failed miserably, but it's interesting to see that they are targetting Firefox so directly that they are trying to win users back from Firefox (don't see that happening any time soon, though). For some reason it just found a bunch of random paid addons/software, and even a laptop. But incidentally, I've seen a nice IE7 addon called IE7Pro which adds a lot of Firefox features and addons to IE, like adblock.
- irisblaze, on 03/08/2008, -0/+0and even a laptop? lmao priceless
- prophetpimp, on 03/06/2008, -0/+10I think every guy has a plugin for your mom.
- skyshock1, on 03/06/2008, -7/+2SIMPSONS DID IT!!!!!!
- misterjangles, on 03/06/2008, -1/+7It's great everybody here loves FireFox but it seems like one of the major points is being overlooked - IE is going to be standards compliant! IE is still the browser used by the majority of people. Maybe not here on digg, but it is still the #1 most used browser on the web. So for designers and developers this is a major win.
- XBSHX, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Correction, IE6 is still the #1 most used browser. IE8 is going to take years to catch up.
- iChainsaw, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2I have a Digg This button in my status bar in firefox. It even tells me how many diggs a page has if it has already been submitted.
- catwoman2970, on 03/06/2008, -2/+1HOOOAH! Take that *****, Bitch Gates.
- iofthestorm, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1I just use a bookmarklet, it doesn't waste any memory and doesn't have the potential to cause a memory leak. Sure, I don't get to see if an item is already submitted and how many diggs it has, but I don't need that information at a glance.
- SolidSnake24, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2You just saved me from using IE8
- headband, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Yes! I was looking for something to make firefox slower than it already is
- jhaks, on 03/06/2008, -37/+11This isn't a plugin or activex control. It's just a little bit of really simple xml.
- thebriz, on 03/06/2008, -39/+153um...could be cool, but I still won't use IE
- m3mn0n, on 03/06/2008, -12/+28Amen. Long live Firefox.
- dandonia, on 03/06/2008, -4/+13the fox aint what it used to be
- KMartSheriff, on 03/06/2008, -1/+8You should try out the Firefox 3 beta.
- Jerky1312, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Agreed, it's going to be better.
- dandonia, on 03/06/2008, -4/+13the fox aint what it used to be
- Elranzer, on 03/06/2008, -3/+46I usually won't use IE either, but it seems Microsoft is now actually trying to make a good product now that they no longer have a 100% sure monopoly. IE7 was a vast improvement. If anything, IE5 and IE6 are proof of how monopolies lead to poor products.
It also seems like IE8 is surprisingly almost ready. Could IE7 be the shortest-lived MS product yet?- jakem1, on 03/06/2008, -0/+8From memory, they promised a faster development cycle when IE7 was released. I think IE6 may have embarrassed them a little.
- Hortnon, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4Yeah, just from the developer's blogs you can tell there was a pretty major shift in their business model between 6 and 7. They just seem nicer now. :P
- Remmy, on 03/06/2008, -6/+1Windows Vista may take that title.
- prophetpimp, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Windows ME.
- theaceoffire, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Windows Bob.
- iofthestorm, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2It was actually Microsoft Bob, it wasn't a version of Windows.
- prophetpimp, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Windows ME.
- Edan25, on 03/06/2008, -2/+1The more features Microsoft adds the more slow IE gets. Maybe a better IE... but a good IE? I doubt.
- Jerky1312, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1IE users should be thankful Firefox and Opera came into the scene.
- jakem1, on 03/06/2008, -0/+8From memory, they promised a faster development cycle when IE7 was released. I think IE6 may have embarrassed them a little.
- chris9902, on 03/06/2008, -9/+4IE7 uses 1/3 the memory of Firefox so if IE8 says within that range AND has all these cool features I may switch.
- lennybird, on 03/06/2008, -8/+1...Or you could get get 4 gigs of ram. Not to mention Firefox may use far more ram, but it also responds much faster.
- chris9902, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2I have 4 gigs of RAM but I don't just have a web browser open so the less memory used the better.
- theaceoffire, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3You do not need 4GB of ram to browse the internet.
- andycr512, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6That's fixed in Firefox 3. You really should try it; it's completely different.
- theaceoffire, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5Firefox 3's javascript is faster too.
- misterjangles, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6I believe that IE has a smaller footprint because some of it's core functionality is technically part of Windows. So the IE app shows low memory usage, but it's relying on certain OS processes to be running. FireFox doesn't have the luxery of tuning the OS to suit their app.
- Bossman1086, on 03/06/2008, -1/+3Yeah. Explorer.exe runs some of IE's backend stuff. So if you look at iexplore.exe, that's not the total usage for IE. Explorer.exe's mem usage does go up when IE is open. I think there might be a third process, too.
- irisblaze, on 03/08/2008, -0/+0But firefox runs at the instant i double click its icon and it's already runing, when i run IE my whole pc freezes
- lennybird, on 03/06/2008, -8/+1...Or you could get get 4 gigs of ram. Not to mention Firefox may use far more ram, but it also responds much faster.
- m3mn0n, on 03/06/2008, -12/+28Amen. Long live Firefox.
- Books, on 03/06/2008, -8/+141At least these guys are finally trying to get on the same page as their competitors (FF, Opera, etc...).
- surKaz, on 03/06/2008, -1/+5Yes, I applaud (more like go "eh...what else ya got?") at the fact that they are getting better and adding more functionality. However, they still aren't there yet. Plus, It took them a while as well. Keep working Microsoft... Hopefully you'll be faster with the updates to cater to the internet techies...someday..
- NOFXY, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1sad thing is they're actually getting paid to do this.
- Hortnon, on 03/06/2008, -2/+3As much as I like IE, I agree.
- gypsi, on 03/06/2008, -3/+1can you say blatant marketing ploy? i thought digg users were too cynical to fall for such obvious tricks
- surKaz, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1Yes, it's obvious when the say 'Demo' they just wanna hype it up a little more... but that's alright with me.. I am smart and figured that out.. so when I speak, it's after I've seen through all the overhyped crap....
- UltraMegaFilms, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3At least Microsoft's marketing ploys have more tact than Apple's.
- surKaz, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1don't do that dude... let's keep that kinda comparisons outta here... Unsuccessfully.
- Devdude30, on 03/07/2008, -1/+1lol...opera isnt quite competition
- surKaz, on 03/06/2008, -1/+5Yes, I applaud (more like go "eh...what else ya got?") at the fact that they are getting better and adding more functionality. However, they still aren't there yet. - Madrick, on 03/06/2008, -25/+13IE is getting closer and closer to being useful... But it's not there yet. I doubt it ever will be.

- Wootstapler, on 03/06/2008, -5/+0I do -_-
- TheCoreh, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1But other browsers are also becoming more mainstream. So the number is static right now.
- Jerky1312, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1As more and more read Digg and the comments, they will surely see the light and switch to Firefox or Opera. Even if they don't, they should realize their browser is getting because of such competitors coming into the fold.
- fuzed, on 03/06/2008, -1/+6I use both. There are plusses and minuses to both browsers. I like firefox, but there are many websites that I frequent that requires IE, such as Microsoft Exchange's corporate outlook web client.
- t3rmv3locity, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3A Microsoft web app doesn't support Firefox? I'm shocked.
- antslater, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4Check out the IE-tab plug-in for Firefox. It allows you to have specific pages load within firefox, but rendered by IE. I use it all the time to access the Outlook Webclient in all it's glory
- schtick01101, on 03/07/2008, -0/+2Plus you can set in the options to automagically default to the IE rendering engine when you visit a site that is firefox retardant by loading a URL (you can use wildcards as well) into the Site Filter.
- tnoy, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2I'd be surprised if the use of IE with diff was below 50%.

- Zamyatin, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Y'know it's realizations like this that make give me faith in the Digg community. Thanks Skip :)
Still, I don't have a problem with Digg and MS making a buck on a joint venture. Only thing is my inherent skepticism that MS is doing this in any "good faith" or openness in supporting new tech or trends online. Only reason is because Digg is one of the few (relative to Google) who actually use their advertising.
Alternately, if this itself is a trend, and MS actually does begin getting successful in ads, does this mean we'll get a button for every friggin website out there that uses them? Obviously I'm kidding, but only partly, I guess... After all, this is the same company that allowed PC manufacturers to riddle their OS with extraneous software add-on garbage on new computers, though I guess MS didn't really make the $$$ from that little adventure.
W/e I use a Mac for a reason :)

- 1807, on 03/06/2008, -8/+76Do you guys realize what this means? It means that companies are taking notice and that what we say and what we think may hold more weight than we think. I, for one, would say that digg is probably my favorite site on the net. To be honest, I love this community (for better or worse) and I love that most people read every single comment. So even if you're at the very bottom, your opinion still matters. To me, it's cool to be part of a community where everyone's opinion counts and if something is dumb or doesn't make sense, people will call you out on it. I wish people would see that this isn't about firefox having an extention or IE adding digg support, this is about big companies caring about our opinion and the fact that we have a great community here.
- SLYK, on 03/06/2008, -3/+24Or it's just about money.
- ronoxQ, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1Not money so much as control. Microsoft gains no money from a free browser download. They do, however, get a controlling share in just how one of the major browsers renders online content, as well as hopefully pushing Live.com up a bit.
Minor squabble, though.

- undersky, on 03/06/2008, -13/+12sorry but the "community" on digg is probably the lowest crumb you can find on inthernet forum anywhere in terms of knowledge, career, social life, maturity, and unless you are just an insecure prick who loves to be part of a flow and silence all the voice of the minority, you are pretty stupid and probably living a pathetic life to have found no better community. anyone who calls this place their community is just plain lunatic and sad.

- cadmiumpaint, on 03/06/2008, -3/+13Digg has no community. Its nothing more than an opportunity for anonymous people to take out their aggressions of their real lives by hating on other people and debating useless things to exhaustion. It also gives people the opportunity to pretend they are an expert at everything and give their "valuable" expert opinions on the matter.

1) Password management
2) Ability to force all and/or certain website cookies to be session only
3) Ability to run Delete Brower History on exit
4) Make it easier to backup a profile
Firefox is better in these areas, but I use IE 7 just for the RSS functionality. I can't wait until I can compare FF 3 to IE 8. Competition rocks!- stargatesteve, on 03/06/2008, -12/+1What I'd like to see in IE 8 is:
1)- scy1192, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6so it's perfect, then?

- extratired, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4you should try the sage news reader for firefox
- DiggLive, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1It looks nice after research I just did on it, but I'm not a fan of third-party utilities. They should work to get something like that as a native feature.
- t3soro, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4what's the point of making it native... that's what the whole extension design is there for.
- DiggLive, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1For some things yes, extensions are better. For example, something like FoxyTunes. It doesn't add any Internet functionality and wouldn't be a good idea to include by default because not everyone would use it, and it would add bloat. But something like how RSS is done in IE 7 would be very useful in FF3 as a native feature.
- Frustian, on 03/07/2008, -1/+0Not everybody uses RSS and would like to be bogged down by an RSS Reader. Why does it make a difference who codes it?

- stargatesteve, on 03/06/2008, -12/+1What I'd like to see in IE 8 is:
- THE4IRON, on 03/06/2008, -7/+11Should read: "Microsoft Demos "STANDARDS COMPLIANT" Feature in IE8
- oakj423, on 03/06/2008, -2/+27what happens if it's already been submitted
nevermind, people will submit and digg anyway - mlostracco, on 03/06/2008, -0/+8With the upcoming stories page rendered virtually unusable by the incessant spamvalanche of submitted press releases, sport gambling picks, discount domain services, travel deals, and "I just found this website" ads, I can only see this being used en masse in very bad ways.
In related news, why does Digg still allow certain domains and IPs to submit spam, even when they've been flagged ad nauseam? I see the same old sites ruining the Upcoming section every single day, and just creating new account after account on the same IP to submit the same sites is something easily bannable. Seriously, the Upcoming page is now useless and has been allowed to be ruined by spam.- AgarwaenUmarth, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1There's a reason I don't look at Upcoming stories. That happens to be it.

- estvir, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1Wow, I guess you're apart of that moronic pro-FOSS cult who want to 'convert' the world yet they have no absolutely no clue how to and go on insulting the very people they want to convert.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the majority of people I see who are trying to switch people away from Microsoft are the same people who insult them and think they're above them just because computers are their hobby and not the hobby of the rest of the world's population.
And you wonder why Linux hasn't taken off. Quick, insult their intelligence for not being able to compile an application on Linux and ignore the fact that people just don't care nor want to learn and they shouldn't have to.
Oh, and are you expecting all those morons to magically stop sending forward emails which actually has nothing at all to do with their browser choice and more to do with what I just mentioned? It's amazing how dumb you are despite how smart you think you actually are.
- michaelothomas, on 03/06/2008, -6/+15I will never use IE for one simple reason: what Microsoft did with IE6. They worked like crazy to get Netscape out of the market, including abusing their OS monopoly. And then what did they do the second they had 90% market share? They sat on their hands for 5 god damned years leaving the world with a buggy, non-standards-compliant, wildly insecure web browser. Now Firefox is starting to gain market share so they're once again trying to innovate. But I'll never switch, cuz the second they reclaim their lost market share, they'll sit on their hands again, and let the web stagnate.

1. It's open source. I can change things I don't like. Can't do that in IE.
2. It's constantly evolving. New features, fixes, and optimizations are constantly worked on and publicly talked about.
3. It's supported on every major Operating System. I don't have to use compatibility layers to run it in Linux.
4. I've never had to use specialized rendering techniques for a web page to display correctly.
5. I don't need a compatibility mode to make Firefox standards compliant.
6. Firefox never tried to kill its competition.
7. .... No. I'll stop there for now.- LightSpeed4, on 03/11/2008, -0/+01. theres nothing "i dont like" on ie

- Metasquares, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2I don't think they can break FF in the same way they did Netscape.
- misterjangles, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2I have to agree with you. I think the situation is different for a lot of reasons, but one major one is that Netscape was a closed-source proprietary product and they publicly declared war on Microsoft. Microsoft had a major home-turf advantage in that battle, even though they were a little slow out of the gate.
FireFox seems more just about having a great browser and less about trying to destroy anybody.
- misterjangles, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2I have to agree with you. - rossisdead, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3The plus side is that Netscape was one ***** ***** browser.
- LightSpeed4, on 03/06/2008, -8/+3ie7 is way better than ff, youre missing out
- rdas7, on 03/06/2008, -11/+4Looking at their stellar track record, I cannot wait for IE8. It's gonna be so awesome!!eleven!1
- riddlebox, on 03/06/2008, -4/+6Currently using the IE8 Beta, whats amazing is that A.) Good luck trying to use any site that incorporates google maps. They block them because they think its an unsafe cookie? B.) go to http://maps.google.com if you are using IE8 Beta. Its ***** HORRIBLE! C.) Try editing the digg comment text area by trying to place a curos in the middle of a statement to fix a typo....it doesn't know what to do. We are by far no where near as developers to having a stable product. Although I do agree the CSS is definatly performing much better then it was beforehand. Crossing fingers as I continue developing....
- Desimat0r, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5This isn't due to a faulty implementation in IE8 or anything else, this is due to the fact that web developers are absolutely raping XHTML in ways it shouldn't be touched. Web apps are a useful travesty.
- misterjangles, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2I didn't get any cookie blocking problems, but you are right that maps.google.com has some sever rendering problems in IE8. I would be curious to know if this is due to IE, or if it's due to non-standard hacks used by google?
- estvir, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Aside from rendering problems http://maps.google.com works perfectly in IE8 Beta1.
Lie more, really, maybe you'll be able to convince some of the other lemming Microsoft hating, fickle morons on Digg to take you out on a date where your conversation can consist of "LOL M$ SUCKS" while one of you sits there typing on a Dell laptop with Windows XP SP2. - spiri, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1http://maps.live.com is just as messed up as Google Maps in IE8
- thailand1972, on 03/06/2008, -7/+12Slightly off topic, but a new feature in IE8:-
"Automatic Crash Recovery (ACR) is a feature of Windows®Internet Explorer® 8 that can help to prevent the loss of work and productivity in the unlikely event of the browser crashing or hanging."
In the unlikely event?- mithrasinvictus, on 03/06/2008, -2/+7i bet that mechanism will be the first cause of a crash itself
- cadmiumpaint, on 03/06/2008, -3/+2in the everyday event......
- SSCrow, on 03/06/2008, -4/+7Well, considering that FF Crashes when Quicktime wants to update. While IE doesn't. I wouldn't go around boasting that FF is incredibly stable.
- estvir, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2IE7 hardly ever crashes, in fact, I can't remember the last time it has crashed and if IE7 had some stability problem of even the most minute amount the morons on Digg would be all over it with 3 stories a week about how unstable it is.. and I'd like to emphasise that that's if the problem was even a tiny, tiny, tiny one.
- peilo, on 03/06/2008, -5/+7scary stuff, my crystal ball tells me Microsoft secretly plans to acquire digg :)
I could be wrong...let me shake it a lil- swizzcheez, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1"Better not tell you now" is what mine is saying...
- 4degrees, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3mine says "too busy trying to acquire yahoo, ask again later"
- aiten, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2You wanna see what _my_ crystal meth is telling me... oh... w !!!!!!!
- iregistered4ths, on 03/06/2008, -6/+8This is pure marketing genius and the fact that this got so high on Digg shows it. Why do we care if IE8 has features of year old browsers? Oh yeah they put a Digg spin on it.
- TwoLOUD, on 03/06/2008, -2/+1If IE used the Stumbleupon download correctly (have lags n whatnot) Id be using IE8 fulltime. I use Firefox b/c the stumbleupon feature rocks..
- tba2287, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1I wish that IE had a central download manager.
- estvir, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1There is a Stumble Upon thing in the new "Activities" thing in IE8.
- codo678, on 03/06/2008, -6/+5This is the only IE story I've dugg, but IE still sucks.
- digitallysick, on 03/06/2008, -8/+10Stop the presses! Microsoft makes a web browser to catch up with Firefox and Opera, welcome to 2005
- tba2287, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Considering the fact that IE has 75% market share, getting average web surfers to cross over will have its benefits. IE8 means that developers won't have to employ stupid hacks to get their pages to render properly in IE. IE7 emulation and meta tags should help maintain backwards compatibility.
- 0260, on 03/06/2008, -2/+3aww doesn't support vista sp1. oh well
- jetcopter, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4Works fine for me on Vista SP1 RTM
- scy1192, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1I'm surprised you weren't buried to oblivion for admitting you use Vista
- jer2eydevil88, on 03/06/2008, -5/+2Yay...I hate Microsoft... IE 8 won't render my websites navigation bar and even though its XHTML compliant... blah
http://bayimg.com/dAjDFAaBc for a screen shot or http://www.zigzap.com if you are using IE 8 - mserna23, on 03/06/2008, -7/+1Even Kevin Rose has to love that feature. Even tho he's anti-microsoft. hah.
- Billions, on 03/06/2008, -1/+5Now even easier to add a story about *AMAZING MUST SEE* street artists using chalk
- aiten, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2no! where?
- cave, on 03/06/2008, -6/+4Do I digg this because it mentions Digg, or do I bury this because it's an ad for IE...
Oy gevalt, what a conundrum!- aiten, on 03/06/2008, -2/+1dugg for using the word gevalt.
- cesclaveria, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1just ignore it.
- garywoo, on 03/06/2008, -3/+4now all we need is firefox to do one and ..... oh wait
- Speed, on 03/06/2008, -4/+2Never thought I'd see a site from microsoft.com on Digg.
- anillop, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2Good for them. I love firefox but anything that improves all of the products on the market will eventually raise the bar and prevent stagnation
- tba2287, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Only as long as IE doesn't reclaim 95-97% market share like it had before Firefox and came out. We need to keep browser writers from getting complacent, be it Microsoft, Mozilla, Apple or Opera.
- YodaJones, on 03/06/2008, -3/+3Love love love...all you need is love love love.... Golly the clouds look so fluffy and the sun is shining so very nicely that I hardly notice the IE hemorrhoids that have plagued the web.
- usingpond, on 03/06/2008, -9/+4Aw, Microsoft is trying to be cool. To bad there's not a chance of that ever happening.
- neiltc13, on 03/06/2008, -4/+5A truly magnificent example of bloatware.
- LightSpeed4, on 03/06/2008, -4/+3would be firefox
- arizonagroove, on 03/06/2008, -1/+8'Microsoft Demos "ADD TO DIGG" Feature in IE8'
No. No they didn't. digg.com is not explicitly mentioned anywhere in the linked article.
What Microsoft has actually demoed is the new "Activities" feature and there happens to be a screenshot in which some examples can be seen one of which happens to be labelled 'add to digg'. Facebook also appears in the screenshot. Shall I go tell every that'Microsoft Demos "SHARE ON FACEBOOK" Feature in IE8'?- hadak, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Thanks, you just reminded me to check my facebook before I headed out for the afternoon.
- LightSpeed4, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0facebook and digg are both advertising partners of microsoft.
- pcpimpster, on 03/06/2008, -4/+5I'm predicting a watered down diggnation of every idiot who will start using digg due to this new button shoved up their ass by default.
I.E., general public. - jm4847, on 03/06/2008, -14/+6Who the ***** uses IE??? Honest question, and why?
Is it because you don't know any better? Is it because you don't know there are other browsers? It it because you're lazy? I don't see any other reason...- aiten, on 03/06/2008, -7/+4dugg for simply being right. I'd actually be interested to see a poll of some sort on this.
- LightSpeed4, on 03/06/2008, -2/+6only everyone that doesnt want to use the bloated memory leaking pos known as firefox
- andycr512, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Firefox 3 is vastly improved, and is faster than IE 7 by far. It also has spell check, which would undoubtedly be useful to you.
- Uchikoma, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3It's simple. Whatever browser link on my quick launch bar happens to be closer to my mouse. That, and because of the fact that I do some web development I do need to ensure that my site renders correctly across browsers.
That and I could care less what browser I use. Mmkay? I'm not a rabid believer in either. If it gets the job done, then great. If it doesn't, then I'll use something else.
...and yes...don't forget the Firefox memory leak bug. It also has a habit of consuming an entire core worth of CPU utilization when I got a ****ton of tabs open. On that note: I look forward to Firefox 3.- Hypermarkalan, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Question: What's a ****ton? And just as a point of reference, where would it fit on the buttload, *****, ***** chart of measurement?
- DigiRaven, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Its quite simple. We can't stand douche bags and we don't want to become one either
- Topher06, on 03/06/2008, -2/+3Because FireFox crashes every 10 minutes and IE 7 does not. I am giving FireFox 3 a try, but so far its just as unstable and dirt slow.
- acitcratnA, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1IE runs faster for me; also, in my experience more sites are compatible with IE.
Although I have Firefox installed, I rarely find the need to use it.
Of course, I use IE through Avant Browser.
- jetblackz4, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1open source ? I think not
Mozilla is still the best browser and Microsoft is feeling the pinch like it did with Netscape but this time they can not force us to use it. -
