- readme, on 11/04/2009, -4/+48"I got fired from Microsoft and Windows Vista was my idea."
- user500, on 11/04/2009, -5/+45In other news Microsoft applied for 801 foreign worker visas on Tuesday...
- jayyoung, on 11/05/2009, -0/+35Steve Ballmer probably said he hates Jobs, and HR took it the wrong way.
- Hefelumpman, on 11/04/2009, -1/+29Good luck to all those who lost their jobs
I'm 6-months in from being laid off from there (straight out of college, with 10months on-the job), and things aren't looking much brighter. - 1Bad, on 11/04/2009, -2/+17Yep, the largest company in the world cut 800 jobs. In other news, a bug splattered on the windshield of a truck driving on the freeway.
- Ikus13, on 11/04/2009, -2/+14I don't know what's worse, the fact that you are such an idiot, or that you're actually being dugg. And no, I'm not a Macboy, I just hate people like you.
- avidlinuxuser, on 11/04/2009, -3/+14nah... Microsoft opened a new office in India and has hired 1600 workers at this shop. With double the employees at less than half the cost, Microsoft can now cut their development cycle in half and pass the savings to the consumer. ;)
- NomortaL1, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10i honestly doubt doubling the workforce directly translates to halving the cycle... really
- R3publican, on 11/05/2009, -0/+9This is a good thing for Microsoft. It gives them an excuse to cut 1% of their lowest performers. Heck, at most companies that size I'd bet as high as 5% of the employees are about worthless anyway.
- Langford, on 11/04/2009, -5/+14In future news, several former Microsoft employees roll out a new Linux distro.
- Fleagleman, on 11/05/2009, -1/+10When asked who he chose to lay off, Steve Ballmer was quoted as saying, "Developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, developers!"
- Warom, on 11/04/2009, -8/+17At 90,000 employees, Microsoft is far too large. I think there are a lot of cut backs in the next few years for Microsoft. Unfortunately Ballmer is the one who will be stuck with the negative image for fixing up someone else's mess.
- cplusplus, on 11/04/2009, -1/+10Just QA people, don't need them.
- enantiodromia, on 11/04/2009, -3/+12especially since MS considers the general public to be their QA testers
- roxgod666, on 11/05/2009, -4/+13No.
- Ikus13, on 11/04/2009, -2/+9So let me get this straight, if I dislike people who randomly and pointlessly bash at anything without any kind of basis, I am immediately an Apple fanboy, who is also immediately either gay or a girl.
You're worse than I thought. You're like those Republican senators that having all the evidence of gang rape still vote against the victim. There's no way I can get you out of that monochromatic thought of yours.
You're a pathetic fanboy. It doesn't matter which OS you choose, the fact that you're a fanboy is enough. And yes, I've told these same words to Mac fanboys. - datdamonfoo, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6People are losing jobs in this economy? First I've heard of it.
- avidlinuxuser, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6i must have forgotten the /s tag. It should be kind of obvious though that I wasn't serious especially with the ";)" at the end. It's a joke aimed at proponents of outsourcing.
- danielttt, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6I missed that one...How fast was the poor slob going. what kind of bug was it.. and...hope he's ok...seems digg blew it on that one.
- dalittle, on 11/04/2009, -3/+8this reminds me of the first time Motorola did this. Look at how far they have fallen.
- bmcnally, on 11/05/2009, -2/+7It's spelled "Yak".
- Eorster, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5This calls for a reading of the The Mythical Man-Month .
- PatrickBrown, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5If only I had a job to afford their software.
Oh well, I am sure they will make plenty of money selling it at 1/10th the cost to Indians. - redxii, on 11/05/2009, -3/+8Yes, with something like this:
"A problem has been detected
EMPLOYMENT_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
*** EMPLYMNT.SYS" - tnoy, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5In other words, Microsoft had 800 more employees than it needed.
- datdamonfoo, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6Thankfully Apple doesn't.
How's that guest account working out again? - IntruderII, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4This has zero effect on interns.
This is such an insignificant statistic I find it hard to believe it made it to the front page, especially considering how many new employees Microsoft is hiring (Hint: It's probably more than 800). - enantiodromia, on 11/04/2009, -1/+5probably the opposite, actually. MS loves free workers.
while i was there, they laid off the entire MSN Ops department, most of them had been employees for 5+ years, and "allowed" them to come back as contractors. - burrgrinder, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Guest accounts are a nice convenience, if you can't figure out why, that's your personal problem, quit being a smug bastard.
Also, Unix has had user accounts for more than 3 decades. It's like trying to make your knowledge of OLEDs sound legit by describing gas-lamp construction materials. Nobody cares and it's not really relevant to anything outside of history class.
OSX is a true Unix and has guest accounts. You can basically do the same thing by creating a user with no write privileges outside their home directory in other *nixes and write a script to wipe and replace that home directory as a nightly cron job, a login script, etc. What's your definition of a "real" OS? - bmcnally, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Depends on the division. Some divisions are growing and hiring (not only interns but Full Timers) while others are being cut or re-organized due to changing requirements (God, that sounded bureaucratic).
My point is that Microsoft is a big company - cuts and hiring are not evenly distributed. - DanielPhermous, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4Yes but Bill Gates has nothing to do with Microsoft any more.
Well apart from those god awful adverts. - gnomeh, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3He may have left his throne but he'll never leave his baby.
- datdamonfoo, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3@enantiodromia
WOOSH.
I was not complaining that OSX did not have guest accounts.
Please look up "Snow Leopard + Guest account + deletes data" and come back to me. - theuniversal, on 11/05/2009, -2/+5Firing 800 people isn't going to help Microsoft. What it needs to do is fire Steve Ballmer. That idiot has been a complete failure. It's ***** mind-boggling that he is still there.
- cyberclown, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3Windows 7 is out now so is this really a surprise? No need for these 800 until the next release.
- Ikus13, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3Microsoft was stable in XP SP2
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2It sounds strange but Microsoft having less people might force it to cut some product lines that are costing it money and frustrating its user base by being "not quite good enough".
I am not talking about MS Office and MS Windows. But I think they need to look at things like IE, SQL Server, and things that they are just competing against better solutions from non-competitors.
Maybe some parties in Microsoft consider Firefox a competitor today. However, if IE was retired, in no way would they consider Firefox a competitor at that point.
SQL Server and IE have done a lot harm globally, to computers by spreading malware and hurting companies that are customers of Microsoft. The products need to be redefined, replaced, or retired so they are not doing that anymore.
Windows and Office are critical to Microsoft. They have not been advancing Windows every year like it deserves. It needs to spend as much attention on Windows as Apple does on Mac OS. - hblask, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3Someone tell Obama's bean counters so he can subtract it from his "jobs saved" total...
- antdude, on 11/05/2009, -0/+21?
- gnomeh, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Really? Hope they get some sort of support. Bill Gates could easily pay for these people to continue working for MS and he probably wouldn't even notice the dent.
- enantiodromia, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2i think you both misunderstood me, i'll sum it up for you: who cares about guest accounts?
- Import98, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3I guess their profits weren't up to par so more had to go. GL to those being laid off.
- macslut, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2Ballmer has been CEO of Microsoft for about 10 years now. Who's mess is he fixing?
http://www.google.com/finance?chdnp=1&chdd=1&a ... - command76, on 11/05/2009, -5/+6Microsoft broke my computer
- datdamonfoo, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1People who got their data deleted.
- burrgrinder, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2Why's that unfortunate? Ballmer isn't exactly undeserving of his public image.
- tosumitgupta, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1That is really sad, i thought worst is over :(
- theuniversal, on 11/05/2009, -2/+3"Unfortunately Ballmer is the one who will be stuck with the negative image for fixing up someone else's mess."
Are you kidding? Other than the Xbox, which has been successful, Microsoft has been one non-success story and missed opportunity after another. Whether you judge the company by stock performance, consumer perception, product satisfaction, successful new product launches - pick whatever metric you want - Microsoft has either gone nowhere, or gone downhill, since Ballmer took over. What exactly has he done in your opinion that makes him deserving of a positive image as a CEO? - stuffradio, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1Haha, I see what you did there
