- angrytortilla, on 11/10/2009, -2/+501Guys I'm gonna go create a GUI interface using Visual Basic to track the killers IP.
- fridyrls, on 11/10/2009, -1/+492I hope it contains the "enhance" feature. That would be so useful for some of my images.
- TexMexRex, on 11/10/2009, -1/+305"It's reportedly illegal for unauthorized people to download and use the software." Yes, the MS law of 1987 makes it a felony.
People seem to forget that something being illegal requires there be a law. - 7m7uf, on 11/10/2009, -1/+273just make sure to use Direct3D to "fly" though a wire frame grid of green things that kinda look like PCs, with the killers as a red "PC". Making the killers PC blink and says "IP FOUND" in bold text helps too.
- ducttape36, on 11/10/2009, -1/+269reportedly illegal? they couldnt check that before they ran the story?
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/10/2009, -1/+227Having read a little about this I really question just how useful and how big a deal this really is. About a year ago I attended the proceedings of a murder trial (the wife of an acquaintance was murdered during a home invasion/robbery) in which the defendant claimed to be using his computer at the time of the murder. I was really interested in listening to testimony regarding the examination of the defendants computer. The police investigator described everything from the process of searching the defendants house, to locating & seizing the computer, and then performing the forensic analysis of the computer. He described how he physically removed the hard drive, used a hardware tool to make a duplicate copy of all the contents without altering the hard drive in any way, and then using a program to scan the drive for various bits of information. I don't recall the name of the program he used but it most certainly wasn't called COFEE and it also definitely wasn't a Microsoft product. What I do recall is that the program he used was something widely used in the law enforcement community for forensic computer analysis, something that's been vetted in numerous court proceedings over the years, and the procedures he followed weren't something an "average bobbie" would have done. He was an investigator specially trained in computer forensics. When the District Attorney first started questioning him he spent a good ten minutes or so simply going over the investigators credentials & training, experience with the software he used in performing the analysis, etc. From what I learned at the trial, police departments (at least here in the US) have specific investigators who are trained in dealing with computer analysis, have very specific set procedures, use specific tools, and use the same methods over and over because they've been fully vetted in previous trials so they don't have to spend hours on the stand testifying as to the accuracy & reliability of new/different tools & procedures. Although they didn't cover it in detail I believe it was mentioned that the software that was used could analyze Windows, Mac, linux, etc. After all it's just a matter of the app knowing how to mount various partition types in read-only mode and then scan the data for specific data structures.
- tscbill5, on 11/10/2009, -1/+194This is better than the actual article
- Mankrik, on 11/10/2009, -2/+164ZOOM!
ENHANCE!
ZOOM MORE! - theaceoffire, on 11/10/2009, -0/+159That would require reporting instead of repeating.
Besides, "Reportedly Illegal" sounds far better than "We don't know". - Takfam, on 11/10/2009, -3/+152It comes on a USB drive? Something like that could really put you...
*sunglasses*
...in the driver's seat.
YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!
(I know, wrong CSI, couldn't resist) - IphtashuFitz, on 11/10/2009, -0/+149The analysis of the computer showed it wasn't used at the time he claimed he was on it. He was eventually found guilty of first degree murder & got life in jail without parole. It was mainly due to his DNA being found under the fingernails of the victim that he was convicted. He stabbed her multiple times & slashed her throat, but she put up a fierce fight and it was lucky that she scratched him hard enough to provide the DNA to nail him.
- asgardshill, on 11/10/2009, -0/+112ENHANCE, ENHANCE, ENHANCE ...
- R3publican, on 11/10/2009, -1/+113Don't forget to have it flash "scanning" for at least 12 seconds before that though.
- PocchieTheMan, on 11/10/2009, -0/+100Once you display the IP, make sure and make it soemthing realistic, like 329.12.456.213. Makes it totally believable...
- Darkaged, on 11/10/2009, -4/+101cool story bro
- thejwac, on 11/10/2009, -0/+97What did the computer forensics reveal, did they corroborate the defendant's story? What was the verdict?
- Aliwalla, on 11/10/2009, -0/+97".It's reportedly illegal for unauthorised people to download and use the software"
yes... because that really stops people. - askantik, on 11/10/2009, -15/+110What, exactly, is not easy to use about Windows? Or Office?
- BubblesTheChimp, on 11/10/2009, -0/+95It has to beep on every keypress also.
- RealmDown, on 11/10/2009, -0/+92ZOOM one more time and .....
IT'S A MAZDA ! - seltaeb4, on 11/10/2009, -0/+90Don't copy that floppy!
- R3publican, on 11/10/2009, -0/+88Cool, thanks for sharing (not being sarcastic).
- tgc1, on 11/10/2009, -1/+84Now all they need is DoNUT and they're good to go.
- Grossmont, on 11/10/2009, -44/+126If Microsoft can make this program so easy to use, why can't they make their other products easy to use?
- illspaz, on 11/10/2009, -3/+80Glad it's so intuitive for the user.
I hope they remember to put some SUGAR (Simple, Understandable GUI for the Average Retard) in it, since they're so concerned with CREAM (Cash Rules Everything Around Microsoft).
Unless, of course, you want it BLACK (Basic Linux Application Could Kill)... - stevenr21, on 11/10/2009, -4/+80i bet you always tell people what you have and what you've done but no one likes you
- splinter09, on 11/09/2009, -1/+73I bet Grissom has one already!

- capheine, on 11/10/2009, -2/+70brb torrenting
- RonADiSH, on 11/10/2009, -2/+63so what does it actually do?
- bratterscain, on 11/10/2009, -2/+58Megaman, of course. It's a virus that checks if you have any illegal material on your PC and sends that data to the FBI. Enjoy your federal ass rape.
- Darkaged, on 11/10/2009, -0/+50cool story bro
- rossisdead, on 11/10/2009, -3/+50Are people still bitching about the Ribbon? You've had three years to get over it already.
- palehorse864, on 11/10/2009, -0/+45@lostriot
So, it's like a Visual Basic GUI for tracking IP addresses? - euphoria860, on 11/10/2009, -6/+48Microsoft coffee? i bet it tastes like *****...
- IphtashuFitz, on 11/10/2009, -0/+42@crosaks: The entire family had gone away on a family vacation, visiting the husbands parents & grandfather. The wife flew back home a couple days early, while her husband and their young son remained. The guy who committed the crime knew the family, knew how to get into the house, and knew there was a safe with a fair amount of cash in it. He knew they were away on vacation and didn't realize she'd come home early. He broke into the house in the middle of the night and apparently woke her up. She came down to investigate the noise he was making and that's when he killed her.
- EGOvoruhk, on 11/10/2009, -2/+43Uhhhh...from the article:
"COFEE requires Windows XP but it does have some Windows Vista support" - waughsaabi, on 11/10/2009, -6/+47"and idiot"
That's rich... - twiztidsinz, on 11/10/2009, -2/+42Maybe this is more your speed? http://www.mrtoys.com/images/Fisher-Price-Computer ...
- Mike17102, on 11/10/2009, -0/+39Can you turn it to the left so we can see behind him?
- pHr34kY, on 11/10/2009, -0/+39LOL. Once I saw one on TV where over the *internet* they resolved a 192.168.x.x address. Good call!
- gedawid, on 11/10/2009, -0/+36Microsoft Hot Coffee leaked. You don't want to know what Clippy does.
- braete, on 11/10/2009, -3/+35did u read the article ?
it states that it needs winxp (limited vista and upcoming for vista sp3) - bladzalot, on 11/10/2009, -1/+32Did you just admit on a public forum that you have things the FEDS would be interested in on your UNIX, Linux and OSX boxes?
- itiknila, on 11/11/2009, -0/+30Hahaha... gotcha! 127.0.0.1
- immatellyouwhat, on 11/10/2009, -0/+30Make sure to type randomly on the keyboard for 7-12 seconds to start the Algorithm.
- Euryalus, on 11/10/2009, -0/+29Ummm, I work for the police and am teaching a class how to use it next week. All I can say is "what a load of hype". If you can write a batch file, you don't need it. It's just a front end for any tool you want to run. (Although there are a few interesting features such as hashing and report generation.)
It's only as strong or as weak as the tools you decide to run and the analysis you do afterwards. But yes, it's easier and faster to teach than scripting - not that that's saying much. And it takes just as little effort to use as a batch file: (1) insert USB, (2) double-click executable (3) stare at screen until command shell closes, (4) remove USB. - Darkaged, on 11/10/2009, -4/+32*cough*Pirate bay - "COFEE-Microsoft Forensic Tools"*cough*
- the8thbit, on 11/10/2009, -1/+29mhearne: Let me break this down for you:
D-D-Do-Do-Don't
No Carmen Sandiego, no more Oregon Trail
Tetris and the others, they're all gonna fail
Not because we want it but because you're just takin' it
Dis-res-pec-tin' all the folks who are ma-kin' it
The more you take, the less there will be
The disks become fewer, the games fall away
The screen starts to tweak, and then it will fade
Programs fall through a black hole in space
The computer world becomes bleak and stark
Loses its life and the screen goes dark - vicsvenge, on 11/10/2009, -0/+27I feel like this post might have taken you a lot of time to make... but damn it's sweet.
