- trying2hide, on 10/11/2007, -8/+244well that is good. Now where is the apology for Windows ME?
- bookmac, on 10/11/2007, -16/+111That was an Ultimate Lame idea on the part of Microsoft....
- pbrooks100, on 10/11/2007, -6/+93Whats next, Ultimate Solitaire and Ultimate NotePad?
- Stonekeeper, on 10/11/2007, -9/+46With synaptic package manager, I have tens of thousands of ultimate extras!
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -7/+43Yeah, they totally dropped the ball with the Ultimate Extras thing (Seriously, Language Packs, what the hell ?). I wonder if they can recover and make up for it.
Ars made a mistake, they say DreamScene was cracked to run on XP but link to a story about how it was 'cracked' to run on non-Ultimate versions of Vista. - primortal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33probably spending all this time porting space cadet 3D pinball to vista
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28I think it's an unspoken/unwritten law that we do not speak of the abomination that is Windows ME. Every time you mention it a thousand geek souls suffer the anguish of disgust for the evil MS let loose upon this world.
- notman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25Wow, I was JUST discussing this yesterday and was wondering if I was the only person noticing the lack of 'extras'.
I want to know wtf this is about: "We want to let our Windows Vista Ultimate customers know that we are actively working to deliver the remaining Extras that we identified in January." The 'remaining extras'? Does this mean there are no more beyond the 2 more 'planned extras' and 20 more useless language packs? Whoop de *****. - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24Will Ultimate Notepad finally be able to read proper ASCII text or will it be stuck using that MS-DOS style ASCII (which uses CR NL to signify a new line) or proper Unix style ASCII text (which only uses NL for a new line).
- Jaxim, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Agreed. Exactly how many people care about language packs?!
It would be cool if they released Media Browser (formally known as Photo Triage), which was demo'd back in 2003-2004.
http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=14275
Getting this software would definitely be worth having Vista Ultimate. - Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22'Barry Goffe, director of Windows Vista Ultimate'
Does that mean each SKU has its own director? Did the office intern get lumped with Vista Basic N? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+28It wasn't a bad idea at all, MS just failed to follow up and actually release any extras worth actually installing.
Apps like their cool photo thingy (can't remember the name) that you can use to combine sections from multiple shots into the one image would make for a great extra, but MS just seem to have forgotten about it. - srg13, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Or Windows Me
- Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24The fact that you saw the need to switch to an earlier operating system pretty much sums it up.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Link to actual 'apology' via Barry Goffe, Director, Windows Vista Ultimate, Microsoft Corporation:
http://windowsultimate.com/blogs/announcements/archive/2007/07/02/update-on-the-windows-ultimate-extras.aspx - jp3550, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19I dont know about you guys, but id rather them make a service pack before they even decide to make more 'features'. That's my two cents.
- CaptMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19I think they keep up by the whole "Your software will run on our OS." thing. They've kinda got Apple and Linux beat there.
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14so inessence, the real Vista Ultimate edition would be Windows XP?
- LemmingJesus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13He is talking about how crappy the interface on Vista is. The damn control panel won't stay in detailed mode when I tell it to and changes back to tiled every time. There is some sort of network center ***** that forces me to figure out where they hid my network adapters. They also hide the File Edit View Tools options on every window, with the only way to see them by pressing alt.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14What are you talking about? Apple doesn't offer any sort of "extras" for OSX. In fact they only offer one desktop version that includes everything
- coderukus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11The cool photo thinigie was the Microsoft Research project GroupShot, which was already available for WindowsXP. The Final version was suppose to be available for free with the Vista Ultimate Extras. The Ultimate Extras are the biggest let down, WTF makes a language pack an ultimate extra? Shouldn't this be part of the Core OS?!
- andydumi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I disagree. With a new 8800 i still get 10-20% usage out of the CPU, and thats is unacceptable for what is esentially a video player.
They need to improve it big time. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+18I haven't seen a Microsoft commercial in years and I've seen thousands of Apple ads. Who's marketing what?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+19You guys must have CRAPO video cards then. Dreamscene content is loaded into the video cards' memory and the card does the rest with very little CPU usage.
- warped, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12Sometimes a company stretches itself. Instead of doing a small area very well they take on more fronts. This may be happening in Redmond and talent pool may be degrading the product.
It makes me wonder if we will start to see that on Apple's side now that they are no longer a computer company and seem to like overpriced gadgets better. - digboy99, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Why do people have to continuously post "disappointment", "shock" style stories, when they are so clearly against the product/person to begin with? To the posters: Are you really shocked? Is it really so unbelievable to you? It would be cool to actually have a visual representation of the number of post one has posted anti/pro certain topics.
Anyhow, I think from this day forward, if we simply post the daily "Microsoft sucks", "Bush sucks", "Apple is better than sex", "I want to be Steve Jobs lover" post, we can all get on with our lives without endless repeat of the same junk. Right now, Digg isn't a site for serious discussion, but instead a bulletin board of fanboy junk. Now THAT is a disappointment. - DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Honestly, I can't remember the last time Google delivered something that got me excited. In fact, I'm still kinda pissed that they bought Picasa and then effectively stalled its development.
- spuggy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I know not necessarily your point, but if you were looking for a good free (in both senses) text editor, check out Notepad++.
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/.
Not quite as good as UltraEdit, but from what I remember of TextPad, it's just as good. The XML Tools, Pretty Print option has saved me countless hours of frustration working with XML docs. It also has column mode as well. - velocity303, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10I'll be the first one to admit that I'm an avid windows fanboy, (as you can probably tell from my digg avatar) but even I am dissapointed in the lack of extras for Vista. I'm glad they are apologizing for it at least, but it makes me wonder if its just them giving up on the whole project after they finish the next few extras that they already had in the works. Vista is going to be around for years, instead of apologizing, they could just get working on fixing the problem and making some cool extras.
- saralk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Damn those pesky software developers updating their product!!
- Sal4, on 10/11/2007, -10/+15Well let's all hope the final version of DreamScene doesn't take up 90% of all CPU cycles half the time. It's pretty much unusable for me atm and my PC is pretty decent.
- virtualball, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5All I could remember is that I could get into my brother's account by clicking the cancel button at the login screen :)
- missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6An abacus is more stable under pressure than Windows 98, too.
- qwerty1263, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I don’t necessarily expect any Microsoft apologizes, I sort of expect this for the most part from them. Where I think the real tragedy in the whole Vista software is in 3rd party support. I'd like an apology from my video card manufacturers, my sound card manufacturer not to mention Intel I'd like to see one from them as well for lack of R&D to get their hardware to operate properly with the updated system and most have no plans to update any drivers on most of their drivers.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -20/+25When Microsoft does it, it's a gimmick. When Apple does it, it's innovation.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6So you are saying I would go from the current situation where I can run any OS X program + any Windows program + many linux/unix programs to just being able to run any Windows program and that's somehow better and a wider range of software?
Please explain. The reason I bought a Mac is because I wanted the flexibility of running OS X and Windows. If they were to stop developing OS X (HIGHLY unlikely) then one of the large factors is gone. - ninj3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Ugh I was wondering wtf was going on with the ultimate extras.
Dreamscene was cool but it kept crashing my video drivers :( I'd like to see that fully developed and finished. And with many many more scenes too. Maybe in higher res although I can see that might seriously degrade performance.
The article also mentioned changing sound output on the fly per application. That would be awesome. I hate having to close my video or game to switch to headphones or speakers. - DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It would have been funnier without the gratuitous language.
- returnofajedi, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11I don't know about you, but I called it Win XP :)
- mfearby, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Why would I want all that classic stuff if I have a half decent PC? Because all the extra interface candy that comes with Vista simply gets in my way and slows me down. Even with a fast video card, mobo, etc, I'm slower with Vista than I am with XP because I just want a simple file explorer that doesn't try to force me into its crappy "searches" or treats me like an idiot all the time. I want my half-decent explorer back, damnit!
- wiggimt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'd be happy if we got the original Minesweeper back in the extras...the new one is just horrid.
- InferiorWang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4 Hell, I put XP in classic mode because I don't like the default settings. If I end up with vista at some point, I'll likely want to do the same with it, too.
- kheldorin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Do people really but the Ultimate version for the extras? I was under the impression that most bought it because they needed the features from both Home Premium and Business. Personally, I think it's NOT a good idea for MS to release applications just for the Ultimate version. If a typical home user have a use for that application, it should be available for home versions as well.
- Langford, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I cannot express my hatred for the web veneer that has been slowly replacing all of the menus and dialogs in Windows. Vista is the worse yet. Not only do the menus function like web pages, they function like bad web pages. Microsoft used to have a good thing going, but they threw it away for junk.
- TenebrousX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I love hold 'em, but Microsoft's version is terrible
I like the chess game - freebit50, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7The "Wow!" starts now! As in, Wow, people that that bought Ultimate really got the shaft. The vague double-talk evident on the apologies page makes their apparent duping of the customer even more apparent. Also, I notice that the blog conveniently does not allow people to leave comments.
- crash2005, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7to ANYONE who is thinking about buying Windows Vista Ultimate..
Please do yourselfs a Favor and wait till end of summer and see if they kept their word before buying.
They said that we will get extras before and all we got was 3 useless extras and one of them is still in preview/beta. So that right there shows that they will not keep their word. Also how long did it take them to reply to this matter?? A long time so that proves that you should just wait. Also if you look on their site they removed the teams Bios because there is NO Ultimate Extra team anymore.
They only said what they said because they dont want us the users and they media that have been covering this issue to change sales because of not having the extras. this is just a PR stunt because Ultimate sales was down ever since this issue came up. - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7No you don't. All patches to an OS X iteration are free. Not to mention that you get free iTunes upgrades, etc.
Unless you are one of those guys that calls each major release of OS X a "service pack." You know, the major releases that come out every two years and have an assload of new features. "Service pack." Right. - strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Man I hope so. That'd make my purchase of Vista Ultimate (OEM) seem worthwhile. Loved that game.
