MSN messenger blocking youtube links!?!?
neogaf.com — At first I thought it was just me. But then I googled for it and found a forum where people were experiencing the same problem. On MSN, type www.youtube.com and the message won't pass. The curious thing is that if you alter any of the letters in the domain (i.e. changing it to youtuve.com ) the message gets effectively passed. WTF, Microsoft?
- 1588 diggs
- digg it
- Sikakoira, on 05/10/2008, -52/+14No need to alter any letters - all you have to do is break the link, so for an example "http://www. youtube.com" works.
- insllvn, on 05/10/2008, -21/+2or just drop http://www.
- NathanCH, on 05/10/2008, -3/+84You've missed the point entirely.
- fkr3, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5It's probably been caught up by some overly-zealous filter, like when .info "domains" were blocked a year or so back but any url with .info in it didn't work.
- Corrosionx, on 05/10/2008, -2/+35But then it's not really a link, is it?
- PL3NTY, on 05/10/2008, -1/+16ten points go to you
- elektriknoizz, on 05/10/2008, -0/+12Since when are you able to give a comment +10? Call the authorities, we have a system gamer!
- TheMidnight, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4Whose Digg Is It Anyway? the site where the points don't matter. Just like Ron Paul in the '08 elections, that's how the points are.
- FuckThaMeme, on 05/11/2008, -2/+0Meeeoooow
- Corrosionx, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4@TheMidnight: Nobody matters in this election except who the elite have decided will be our next "decider".
- elektriknoizz, on 05/10/2008, -0/+12Since when are you able to give a comment +10? Call the authorities, we have a system gamer!

Whoever still uses exclusively MSN while knowing about the multitude of other messenging networks available is not right in their mind. Past the unstability of the networks go censorship, serverside overzealous blocks (try writing any url with download.php in there!), and so on. Personally, I love Google talk mostly because of the use of Jabber protocol and the serverside logging which is damn useful to have.
But either way, MSN is still awful. Go on and convert your contact list, that's what I did and I don't regret it a bit.- Lewiji, on 05/10/2008, -2/+4I would, but they're all "not right in their mind"s. Shame, I always thought they were quite nice
- OpticalLiam, on 05/10/2008, -1/+14Actually you can get around it by simply putting the URL in quotes into MSN and it comes out as a clickable link on the other end still.
i.e. "http://www.youtube.com" - with the quotes ofcourse.
Also, they're blocking URLs from a bunch of other sites including DeviantArt and Google Pages. A list of the phrases they block is here:
http://www.allocinit.net/blog/2007/08/07/the-actua ... - willynilly, on 05/11/2008, -8/+7Who the hell still uses the "www"? Welcome to 1997.
- Spudster, on 05/11/2008, -1/+4It still works for me...
- YAOMTC, on 05/10/2008, -10/+124I can confirm this. I'm connected to MSN through Pidgin on Ubuntu, so I can assure you, it's not a client issue.
Yet another reason that I like AIM better. Character formatting, more reliable connection, embedded profiles... and now there's this. Sure, it's not the *best* protocol out there, necessarily, but in my opinion, it's the best option out of those that are widely used.- SebHughes, on 05/10/2008, -1/+10Just send a youtube link via Adium and it worked, it didn't earlier in the day.
- insllvn, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6The issue seems to be the inclusion/exclusion of http://www. can you confirm? I don't have an account with MSN, so I can't test it, but this is the consensus on /.
- DeathfireD, on 05/10/2008, -1/+13both http://www.youtube.com and http://youtube.com work now for me. I use GAIM. The urls where not working earlier in the day but now work just fine. Looks like MSN staff got their ass chewed out.
- allyant, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Tried it on MSN Live and worked fine.... No problem here...
- bjornski, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1My friends are I send YouTube links to each other all the time on MSN, so this news kind of surprised me. Maybe it is because we're all using the Live messenger, and not the built in one.
- AzureRise, on 05/10/2008, -4/+5GAIM? Update man. Latest version is called Pidgin. Stupid AOL suing for them to change their names.
- DeathfireD, on 05/10/2008, -2/+4I don't plan to anytime soon since pidgin developers wont add back in the protocol icons. Sure theres a plugin now to show it on the right but it looks like ***** next to the avatar. They need to ditch the green dots and bring back the protocol icons.
- RevoltPuppy, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7GAIM was a retarded name, anyway.
- planksconstant, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7you're not going to upgrade to a far superior version of the exact same application because the developers took out icons?
more power to ya.
- BlackCow, on 05/10/2008, -10/+8I like xfire.
- BryanJK, on 05/10/2008, -8/+3Google Talk and Steam are my personal favorites
- AzureRise, on 05/10/2008, -2/+10Ew. Steam. For a chat program, really?
- latova, on 05/10/2008, -5/+2It lets you chat to people playing games, or chat from games without having to minimize or run in windowed mode.
- bronyraur777, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Oh, you mean xfire.
- blackfox026, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3You're alone.
- insllvn, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6The issue seems to be the inclusion/exclusion of http://www. can you confirm? I don't have an account with MSN, so I can't test it, but this is the consensus on /.
- Garlik, on 05/10/2008, -2/+4I tried sending one of my friends a youtube link earlier today and after that it blocked every single message that I tried sending. It happened twice with different contacts. I couldn't get any messages through anybody after sending youtube links.
- bjornski, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2I just send a few YouTube links to test it out, and they went just fine. I haven't been having any issues with it. Could it be a version thing?
- fluffyturtle, on 05/10/2008, -23/+6Generally only retarded people use AIM. I need to use MSN and AIM to keep in touch with people and everyone on AIM refuses to type intelligently. It’s like a parallel universe where spelling and grammar go out the window. They are intelligent in real life but AIM has this amazing feature to turn the user into a five year old. Luckily MSN disables this feature if you have it installed.
- thepretext, on 05/10/2008, -2/+7I wish i could bury you over and over and over again.
- iruber1337, on 05/10/2008, -0/+12It's not the program...the people you talk to are simply dolts.
- nogayskthx, on 05/10/2008, -4/+6well... since he's talkin on AIM, its obviously americans he's talkin to.....point gladly taken :)
- KibibyteBrain, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2While it is true that some Americans are stupid, that can be said for a segment of any naturally generated population. Many of the most advanced technologies in use right now were developed in the United States, especially the theories behind them, so I doubt its fair to generalize that Americans are stupid unless you just think that all of humanity is stupid as well. Also, the US government has survived for 200 years with only one major hiccup, which shows they might be too smart for their own good if anything...
- HonoredMule, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1I think that all of humanity is stupid as well...yes, myself included.
(It's always interesting to watch and see if a comment like this will be dugg or buried.)
- nogayskthx, on 05/10/2008, -4/+6well... since he's talkin on AIM, its obviously americans he's talkin to.....point gladly taken :)
- Karmavs, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1I want your version of MSN.
All the people I have on MSN seem to be five year olds too.
- dark_helmet, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6I no longer think that they were just targeting certain sites. Now about 1 in two messages that i send get dropped, which are just plain English sentences. There must be something much more serious than random censorship going on.
- computergod, on 05/10/2008, -11/+4Normal sentences?
So you were talking to your friend about how the VIAGRA you too made your dick so big you needed an xl TROJAN so you wouldn't get a VIRUS?- daza, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Funny comment being buried :(
- computergod, on 05/10/2008, -11/+4Normal sentences?
- xkorbin, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3These douchebags also disallowed .mac email addresses from being used as windows live emails a few months back. Mysteriously, now its working
- beautifulbeast, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5I'm using Pidgin on Ubuntu and my friend uses some webmessenger and every Youtube link get through just fine. There's plenty of times when we get kicked off of or random messages don't get through though. We're in Spain and maybe these changes don't target Europe yet.
- cj485, on 05/10/2008, -2/+4why doesn't microsoft block websites like meatspin, something worthwhile.
- jull1234, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5And prevent a new generation from needing therapy? I think not!
- daizaru, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6This appears to be remedied already, probably someone messing around at HQ and wasn't meant to be implemented. There's a lot of things MS does wrong, but there's no way they would have been sitting around thinking that censoring the net would be a good idea.
- puttly, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2works fine to me
- SebHughes, on 05/10/2008, -1/+10Just send a youtube link via Adium and it worked, it didn't earlier in the day.
- katyra, on 05/10/2008, -1/+23I first noticed when I couldn't send deviantart links to a friend who couldn't send youtube links. Apparently xanga doesn't work either.
- sdrawkcaB, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Some torrent links also do not work
- AnonSpangly, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3GooglePages (or whatever it's called - their nice "make your own simple website with wysiwyg" thing) links also don't get through. They've been not-getting-through for ages - at least a month, probably 2 or more.
- freeforall079, on 05/11/2008, -2/+0How about using http://tinyurl.com/ ?
- jimmick, on 05/10/2008, -7/+397Someone's bitter about being Rick Rolled
- Xabora, on 05/10/2008, -12/+2Obviously.
Although it works via trillian. - legoman31245, on 05/11/2008, -1/+12I searched for this comment just to digg it.
- tayf, on 05/11/2008, -1/+14Props to whoever Rick Rolled Steve Ballmer.
- Xabora, on 05/10/2008, -12/+2Obviously.
- jimmick, on 05/10/2008, -76/+5I don't know whether it was digg's comment system or ANOTHER CONSPIRACY
but I wrote 'someone's bitter about being rickrolled' and my comment disappeared- jimmick, on 05/10/2008, -33/+7Oh wait, no it didn't
Bury me please- novemberdobby, on 05/10/2008, -20/+4Ok!
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/10/2008, -7/+32Good god you're an idiot.
- neFariou5, on 05/10/2008, -3/+29Why are you panicking so much about some comment you stole from the linked forum?
- po43292, on 05/10/2008, -2/+7oh noooeesszz!!
- funkyloki, on 05/10/2008, -10/+1In Soviet Russia, when you comment, you disappear.
- jimmick, on 05/10/2008, -33/+7Oh wait, no it didn't
- owencm, on 05/10/2008, -15/+187Welcome to the world of CENSORSHIP!
So who's up for a horde of angry emails to Microsoft?
I'm writing one now :D- eliza27, on 05/10/2008, -1/+13i already sent one too :D
- MisterFreeze, on 05/10/2008, -14/+74Why don't you just dump Messenger? It's a ***** piece of ***** anyway.
- Myonosken, on 05/10/2008, -4/+62Maybe because its the most popular network in the UK, so its kind of essential if your mates aren't all geeky.
- jeriqo, on 05/11/2008, -0/+8Same in france.. probably close to 99% of marketshare.
- Twelve-60, on 05/11/2008, -0/+8Also Australia...
- shreyans, on 05/11/2008, -0/+8Pretty much Planet Earth minus the USA.
- skmice2, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1OK, but that doesn't mean that you have to use the official client from MS - there are many excellent F/OSS alternatives out there.
- jeriqo, on 05/11/2008, -0/+8Same in france.. probably close to 99% of marketshare.
- terrablebyte, on 05/10/2008, -2/+36Good luck getting all your friends to dump it aswell.
- Lyk4n, on 05/10/2008, -2/+8I went to Google Talk a few months back..
- Jeffler, on 05/10/2008, -8/+7You obviously don't' have many friends. I tried that and lasted about an hour when I realized only one other friend of mine had it, where as I have 200 people on Messenger that I talk to near-daily, plus another 500 contacts that are occasional.
- acceleration, on 05/11/2008, -0/+8You talk to 200 different people "near-daily" on Messenger?
- Lyk4n, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4Actually, I just have intelligent friends..
- BlueSkyfish, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3This story might change some people's minds. If you want to try it, it's http://www.google.com/talk/
- Jeffler, on 05/10/2008, -8/+7You obviously don't' have many friends. I tried that and lasted about an hour when I realized only one other friend of mine had it, where as I have 200 people on Messenger that I talk to near-daily, plus another 500 contacts that are occasional.
- priegog, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6I'd love to switch entirely to Jabber, but it's just not possible if all your friends use MSN. AIM seems to be moving into the XMPP direction, tho, that should be good. But here in Europe nobody uses AIM :(
- dig1x, on 05/11/2008, -5/+3People use Messenger because it is the most capable client. Its a very good app.
- tjdixon, on 05/11/2008, -2/+4TROLL!
- Heavypettingzoo, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5AIM is only used in the USA...I've never heard of anyone using anything else internationally. In china the locals use qq for some reason, but otherwise everyone I've ever met from any country (I'm in HK) has only used msn. People don't even know what AIM is here.
- Myonosken, on 05/10/2008, -4/+62Maybe because its the most popular network in the UK, so its kind of essential if your mates aren't all geeky.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -8/+2You are joking, right? Do you really not understand the meaning of hte word?
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3that is the meaning of the word.
you are confusing this argument with the whole "Microsoft breaking my rights" argument, which the would (probably, gotta read the fine print EULA) not be doing.
But they Are Censoring (if this is true.)
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3that is the meaning of the word.
- Hangly, on 05/10/2008, -2/+19Don't send it via hotmail or it'll never get there.
- MasterGrief, on 05/10/2008, -2/+7Noone's gonna listen to you :D
- daizaru, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6Why send angry e-mails when you can do the next best thing. Stop using their awful product. There's a million alternatives.
- Waterrat, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1So very true. I already stopped using their awful product.

- Sil369, on 05/10/2008, -1/+26What's their connection...? o_o
*x-files theme plays*- BlueSkyfish, on 05/10/2008, -2/+44Microsoft doesn't own them.
- meririm, on 05/10/2008, -3/+11The only explanation I can think of for this mess up is that they wanted to fight spam, monitored the most sent urls, and then added everything to the spam filter with no further investigation... I mean, I know it is microsoft, but I doubt they'd intentionally block several of the most popular websites, if only to avoid a PR nightmare.
- Gutterpunk, on 05/10/2008, -3/+5if they wanted to fight spam, they would get rid of hotmail altogether
/I made my spam filter block "*@hotmail.*" . Anyone I know that use hotmail is not worthy of wasting my time with.- daza, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1You are so cool.

For instance, try sending a message with "download.php" in it.
- Sil369, on 05/10/2008, -1/+26What's their connection...? o_o
- Totov, on 05/10/2008, -13/+120Perfect timing for an open-source/standards messenger service to get some notice.
***** censorship in any form.. and ***** Microsoft.- Atomic1fire, on 05/10/2008, -5/+1anything jabber then....
- gweedo767, on 05/10/2008, -1/+16Jabber is that. gTalk is even based on Jabber, so you can start there.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -4/+2yeah...right...watch how fast that takes off!
- priegog, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Well AIM seems to be jumping (or at least dipping their toes) into XMPP, so hopefully once that happens the rest will realise how retarded it is to keep using a closed system. Also with the MS/Yahoo fiasco, hopefully Yahoo will join google into this area too.
- Mistuke, on 05/11/2008, -4/+6oh please, give it a rest would you. I'm as mad as everyone is, but this has nothing to do with open-source/standards and what not. it could be open source and the hoster can still decide to filter urls. Time to lower that fanboy flag would you. (i know i'll get digged down but w/e)
- Dantetheinferno, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2***** THE RIAA. What? I had to do it.
- jason13086, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Ironically I wasn't logged in and Digg censored the word "*****". I think thats a little ridiculous myself.
- eliza27, on 05/10/2008, -10/+11you know the whole point is not at all what letter you will change in order to see the link, sure there are some tricks...its all about taking away freedom of speech from us, and ofc the proof that thereis no such thing as privacy in conversations..
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -5/+15WHY the ***** do ***** idiots like you talk about "freedom of speech" when it comes to a PRIVATE COMPANY and their software that is free?
All you did was prove to the world that yoi like to bitch about an issue when you know NOTHING about what that issue is.
You do NOT, and never have, and never WILL, have the freedom of speech on privately owned property or web sites, etc.
Go into an Apple store and start screaming about how great the Zune is compared to the iPod. See how far that gets you.- mp93, on 05/10/2008, -4/+4Why is he being burried? I for one think MSN messenger is terrible so I use other messenger programs.
- geoboy, on 05/11/2008, -2/+1Freedom of speech doesn't only apply to the context of government. Censorship is censorship, whether it's coming from the government or whether it's coming from a private company. eliza27 didn't invoke the First Amendment, so no need to get your panties in a wad. eliza27 made a perfectly valid point. It's easy to think you can say whatever you want on an IM client, and that your conversation is just between you and a friend, but this serves us as a reminder that this is in fact not the case.
- magus_melchior, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Let's put it this way: Big corporations are engaging in government by proxy, through massive lobbying and contribution campaigns, and Microsoft is no exception. If they want the power of government, I say there ought to be a check on abuses of what are generally considered basic rights.
Oh, and my conspiracy theory is that they're trying to court China.- fandyboy, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1The corporations sit there in their, in their corporation buildings and, and and see that's, they're all corporationy, and they make money. Mhm.
- acceleration, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1I was about to Digg you up until you mentioned "freedom of speech"
- fandyboy, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Seriously Eliza, stfu please. Microsoft couldn't give a ***** about your freedom of speech, they are a business not a government.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -5/+15WHY the ***** do ***** idiots like you talk about "freedom of speech" when it comes to a PRIVATE COMPANY and their software that is free?
- 4DFX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+18DeviantART links too
- 4DFX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+16Ah, sorry didn't notice this has been said already.
Anyway I hope Google sues Microsoft's ass for this.- IvanB, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1Works here. Youtube does not.
- MattNF, on 05/10/2008, -9/+4Why would they sue them? It's their client, they can do whatever they want with it.
- 4DFX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+16Ah, sorry didn't notice this has been said already.
- novemberdobby, on 05/10/2008, -4/+102Youtube, Deviantart, Googlepages, Mediafire, and eBuddy are all blocked.

- elektriknoizz, on 05/10/2008, -6/+19Because you can never be told the same thing enough.
- atomical, on 05/10/2008, -12/+54I'm about to boycott MSN and start using AIM. I suggest people to do the same.
- FadieZ, on 05/10/2008, -29/+3***** AIM, Trillian ftw.

Trillian doesn't have a protocol of it's own. You're still using other services and as people have said, it's not a client issue.- FadieZ, on 05/10/2008, -9/+2I'm aware of that, however AIM, MSN and Yahoo are all way too bulky in my opinion. Trillian is light, and works with several IM services at once.
No need to get all trigger happy, I'm not an idiot.
(*its)- amirman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5trillian? liight? are you kidding? not only is the GUI bulky, it runs buggy and slowly, the best by far is pidgin: http://pidgin.im
- FadieZ, on 05/10/2008, -9/+2I'm aware of that, however AIM, MSN and Yahoo are all way too bulky in my opinion. Trillian is light, and works with several IM services at once.
- CAPSLOCKISCOOL, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2I doubt FadieZ intended this, but technically, AIM is the program and the protocol is OSCAR, so Trillian is an alternative to AIM.
- KloroFormd, on 05/10/2008, -0/+22*facepalm*
- kutateli, on 05/10/2008, -1/+64It's really easy switching when you don't have any friends...
- Gerbil_Juice, on 05/10/2008, -0/+23It's hard to switch when everyone around here uses MSN.
- po43292, on 05/10/2008, -5/+3Didn't AIM come out a long time before MSN? I've never even used MSN.
- MuskokasFinest, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Yahoo came out before Google...
- BlueSkyfish, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5AIM is the main messenger in America, but many other parts of the world use MSN. All my friends and family in America use AIM, and friends in Japan use MSN, and sometimes Yahoo. Thankfully, Pidgin supports all of them, so I don't have to keep switching programs.
- jparkinson, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3I think MSN came first, its been around since the start of hotmail I believe.
I've noticed that IM usage depends on the region... Here in Canada I don't know a single person who uses AIM, everyone uses MSN. But in the US it seems to be the opposite.- nogayskthx, on 05/10/2008, -4/+2Canadians are collectively annoyed by the US. So when AMERICA is in the title of the ***** program, Canadians tend to avoid it.
and its probably another reason why AIM is so big in the states.
- nogayskthx, on 05/10/2008, -4/+2Canadians are collectively annoyed by the US. So when AMERICA is in the title of the ***** program, Canadians tend to avoid it.
- Heavypettingzoo, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1not just canada, the entire world just about. i am from canada and now live in hong kong. everyone ive ever met from asia and europe uses msn. even the americans convert.

http://google.com/talk - mossblaser, on 05/10/2008, -0/+10Google Talk or Jabber - open standards are the way forwards.
- priegog, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Yu, if youhave the option to just jump, why not to Open standards?
- 3toe, on 05/10/2008, -0/+8Yeah because AOL isn't a huge, greedy corporation too, or anything.
- priegog, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Didn't they at least setup a test server to make it interact with XMPP?
- HakumeiOokami, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3I know that Goggletalk has an AIM transport set up. That's one good thing, at least.

- Hexxeh, on 05/10/2008, -1/+19Fix available here: http://digg.com/microsoft/Youtube_Censor_Bypass_fo ...
- 4DFX, on 05/10/2008, -10/+5In truth you can't 'fix' this, because it is server-side censorship. If I understand correctly this patch will encrypt links, which probably means both users would need to be using it. Unacceptable.
The only way to fix this is to ditch MSN Messenger.- Hexxeh, on 05/10/2008, -1/+9If you'd tried it, or read the source, you'd see that the links it produces are still usable for people without the script.
- 4DFX, on 05/10/2008, -1/+5Not everyone uses WLM. But you're right I didn't understand how it works.
- Hexxeh, on 05/10/2008, -1/+9If you'd tried it, or read the source, you'd see that the links it produces are still usable for people without the script.

- lucutus, on 05/11/2008, -2/+5Just tested it here, works fine. I can pretty much send anything I want in a message via msn meesenger. The only glitch here is the usual people do not appear online when they are sometimes.
- Rhinodog8, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2thats called being blocked....it's not a glitch.
- zerocool1990, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah me too, all the URLs work..devianart, ebuddy, youtube,..
- ferory, on 05/10/2008, -11/+22Wow, I usually stand by Microsoft, but this is unprecedented censorship. Unbelievable, time to change clients.
- sfacets, on 05/10/2008, -7/+6Time to change OS if you are dropping M$ support.
- Hexxeh, on 05/10/2008, -2/+11Only seems to affect countries Messenger TV has launched in.
- gfxluvr, on 05/10/2008, -6/+71Me thinks Microsoft is sour, because they couldn't buy Youtube, before Google could..
- splatzone, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4Does anyone even use soapbox? The video player is so slow and the interface just awful.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -8/+2Yeah...they sure wish they could have something that is costing them millions of dollars like Youtube is costing Google.
Microsoft had absolutely NO desire to dump over a billion and a half dollars on something that will not turn a profit for years. Google, on the other hand has consistently shown that they have no problem losing millions of dollars on services. Since EVERY service that they have come out with, or bought has lost money other than Ad Sense.- mp93, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6"Microsoft had absolutely NO desire to dump over a billion and a half dollars on something that will not turn a profit for years."

- oodledoodle, on 05/10/2008, -1/+9i can confirm this is the case on both pidgin and amsn in the uk.
- sonnoprofondo, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4I confirm the "issue" on the messenger network only using "thirdy party" apps (like Adium), or older Windows Messenger versions.
I can't reproduce the issue with the latest msn on Vista. [ Sure you could use tinyurl, snurl or similar : that's astonishing neverthless. ] - xaeon, on 05/10/2008, -1/+14For both the normal version of MSN Messenger Live (Version 8.1 with Messenger Live Plus on XP) and Pidgin (on Ubuntu Gutsy), I don't see this problem at all. I'm in the UK so would that have anything to do with it? Hmm.
- insllvn, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3Has Microsoft TV launched in the UK? Some people are suggesting this effects only regions where MS has launched their youtube competitor.
- djclay, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1You might wanna update :P WLM is 8.5, and its a fairly noticable update (interface-wise anyway). I'm just an updateaholic =D

.info
*Edit, found a full list: http://londoncommons.net/node/2924
Maybe this measures are for security, but this kind of security (censoring your whole message) it's pretty dumb, it could add the link in red and say something like "INSECURE WEBSITE!" with a warning sign or something.
And the other protection of sending a certain file and the file gets deleted without prompt also sucks.- Myonosken, on 05/10/2008, -1/+8Or be able to enable and disable it at least. Its the same with .exe files- I KNOW I'm not sharing a ***** virus, let me send it.
- canthraxp, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4There's a workaround though. If a file comes and the message "blah blah.. it will be deleted", you can open the folder, copy it to your desktop, and then click ok on the message. It will delete the one received, but you'll have a copy on your desktop.
Then I switched to ubuntu + pidgin. - dark_helmet, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2the sending of files with the .exe extension is a client issue, there are even plugins which disable that "feature" of the vanilla client.
- bjornski, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1So zip it.

- mossblaser, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5i love how it only blocks php - Microsoft's aspx pages are of course completley safe...
- latova, on 05/10/2008, -3/+2Because only microsoft uses asp.
- Daniel15, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2That's only a partial list, here's a full list of what's blocked (this is in a "shields.xml" file that your Messenger client can get from the Messenger server):

- digitallysick, on 05/10/2008, -10/+10This is tampering with communications , and it is against the law i believe. Same when verizon started to block certian text messages, its not different.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -9/+2This may be the dumbest thing ever posted in the history of the internet.
Seriously...it is time in your life to stop acting like you are an expert on everything, especially when you clearly know NOTHING about it. Microsoft could not allow any owrd they want. No one is forcing you to use Messenger. It is not a necessity in life. You are using their product for free, there are plenty other competitors you could go to.- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -11/+1No...seriously, digitallysick...I know you are a pathetic RonPaulian, but you have to at some point accept the rality that you are a ***** clueless little kid and not an expert on anything. The fact that you think this is against hte law is proof of that.
And yet ANOTHER RonPaulian horribly embarrasses himself.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -11/+1No...seriously, digitallysick...I know you are a pathetic RonPaulian, but you have to at some point accept the rality that you are a ***** clueless little kid and not an expert on anything. The fact that you think this is against hte law is proof of that.
- dig1x, on 05/11/2008, -2/+0Except that this story is false -- it works just fine. Total nonsense.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -9/+2This may be the dumbest thing ever posted in the history of the internet.
- evil-doer, on 05/10/2008, -3/+14this is one reason i liked icq before i switched. chatting was direct client to client. it did not pass through a server first by default (offline messages did of course). its obvious it is because its not the client thats altering the urls. every messages are scanned and probably saved on a server somewhere. every conversation you have is available to microsoft. theres no reason for this and it makes filtering like this very easy to do as well.
- mediaspree, on 05/10/2008, -0/+10nice avatar! made me WTF?
- bilangew, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Are you absolutely sure that MSN doesn't use client-to-client connections first? I know MSN uses client-to-msn-to-client as a fallback, and it even falls back on port 80 (instead of the usual MSN protocol port) if everything fails, but I'm sure I could see connections from (client-to-client) MSN conversations in netstat
- evil-doer, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1you will with voice or video

- Princeamor, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Whenever the government has the power of something the people have less power of that something so I very much doubt government intervention would help in this situation. What helps is when everyone stops using Microsoft and then they say... Oh *****.. we need net neutrality.
- jerrycurley, on 05/10/2008, -2/+5Ummm..you DO realize that this has absolutely NOTHING to do with Net Neutrality right? And if the full Net Neutrality law was passed and enrforced to the fullest that this would NOT prevent this from happening...don't you? Or do you just like commenting about issues that you are completelt ignorant of?

- Hakavelli, on 05/10/2008, -0/+10"Around 3:00 AM this morning the first reports started coming in about Messenger not delivering messages that include clickable links to YouTube. This indicates that YouTube is being blocked by the (dreadful) server-side SPIM filter. If the user includes http:// in the link, he will be notified of the failed delivery ("The following message could not be delivered to all recipients"). Without the http-prefix, the user will have no clue that the message didn't get across." - www.mess.be
- kwstas, on 05/10/2008, -7/+8Well, the only way I can explain this 24-hour -or maybe less- censorship is that it was done as an indirect marketing trick. Nobody had heard of Messenger TV, till this 'symbolic' ban of messages containing YouTube links happened.
