- Asrrin29, on 10/23/2009, -23/+366Hey, Linux and Windows both have their places. Linux is a very good open source OS that encourages open development and cross-OS standards. the networking abilities and advances (such as software repositories) are a great addition to the OS world. Windows is an industry standard that most people on the planet are familiar with and is the only OS capable of running high end video games in native code. Both have their merits and I for one am not going to complain. I think it's a fun photo and can't possibly see the politics of it.

- MikeGalos, on 10/23/2009, -3/+85Wow. The person quoted really thinks Microsoft planned the timing of the global launch of their new desktop operating system to "torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium"?
That's just an amazing level of self-importance. - jjremy, on 10/23/2009, -8/+83turtlenecks.
- jasonkostempski, on 10/23/2009, -7/+79This http://bit.ly/456asi has the context. Not sure who Chris is or if he's the actual photographer but it says:
"Microsoft tried to torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium by launching their Windows 7 product that same day. They even had setup a big promotion booth across the street from the conference center."
"During a break, we decided to make some fun of Microsoft and dragged Linus over there. When we arrived there, Linus was sold immediately on the product as you can see in the picture. At least that's what the sales guy thought. He obviously had no idea who he was dealing with. But in the end Linus surprisingly did not buy a copy. Wise man!" - Lewiji, on 10/23/2009, -5/+70If it had enough development behind it for that market, maybe. But most games are coded for DirectX, and that's had many, many years of expensive development behind it that other OS's can't compare to.
Obviously WINE etc can help with that, but it's never gonna be easy enough for the average user. - TnTBass, on 10/23/2009, -9/+73"...is the only OS capable of running high end video games in native code."
Not entirely accurate. Linux can run games designed to run on Linux just as well as Windows can run games designed to run on Windows.
The big difference is DirectX, which gives Windows dev's an easier time to program games for Windows than to program games for Linux. - FyberOptic, on 10/23/2009, -2/+58Ironically, I think Linus is actually one of the most sane members of the entire open-source community, despite being one of the leaders. He's still able to recognize what's good and bad not only about Linux itself but other operating systems as well. It's not just blind silly hatred of Microsoft or whatever like so many people have.
- specialK16, on 10/23/2009, -3/+58Meh, believe it or not, not everyone is a OS fanboy.
I'm pretty sure Linus can appreciate the good work MS did with 7. I'm also sure he probably doesn't give a big ***** about it.
Unlike some, he is not sexually insecure about their OS choice. - nicko68, on 10/23/2009, -18/+73Artsy douchebags

- llamafier, on 10/23/2009, -19/+70I'm pretty sure Linux is more than capable to run video games if there were any made for it. Probably much better than Windows...

- tim620, on 10/23/2009, -9/+42I just installed Windows 7 Pro on my laptop, yesterday. So far so good. I went from XP to Ubuntu, to Windows 7. I never messed with Vista. I really like 7, so far.
- brbeaird, on 10/23/2009, -3/+33Got all my stuff back on after a clean Windows 7 install. I'm very pleasantly surprised, even after reading good reviews.

- Asrrin29, on 10/23/2009, -3/+29Hey, it may be true, but as Lewiji said, DirectX kind of kills the competition. Add to the fact that linux doesn't have enough of a market share to attract developers to port to the OS and it's a catch 22. Maybe someday it will happen, but until it does, Windows is the best PC platform to game on. I would be glad to see games be cross OS at least.
- eqisow, on 10/23/2009, -4/+28No, because OpenGL is equally capable. Consoles (barring the XBox) seem to be able to use it just fine, no?

- stotty, on 10/23/2009, -1/+22"Microsoft tried to torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium by launching their Windows 7 product that same day."
Anyone have any evidence that this is true? Did MS really choose their Win7 release date based on that of the Japan Linux Symposium simply to "torpedo" it, or is this more MS bashing for the sake of it?
I use various Linux distros and am very pro Linux, but sometimes the way in which Linux is promoted, esentially by always trying to put down MS, makes me cringe. It's like the PR office for Linux is full of whiney 14 year old boys! - shirosamurai, on 10/23/2009, -1/+22Japan != China

- FredFredrickson, on 10/23/2009, -2/+21I'm a Windows guy, and I picked up Win 7, but I also run Linux on a spare machine. It's nice to have a second OS to fall back on in emergencies, and Linux is getting better all the time. No hate.
- zoomaKabu, on 10/23/2009, -1/+20This is Tokyo not some provincial village in Cambodia.
- akwok, on 10/23/2009, -8/+26"It's pretty hip to hate Vista, even though it's not that bad. It's better than XP for sure."
QFT. There was nothing inherently wrong with Vista; people like to bash things just cause everything else is doing it. Are you seriously comparing a rock-solid, stable OS to one of the most BSOD-prone OSes in history?
The "Windows = spyware and viruses" argument is getting old too. Your computer is only as clean as the way you use it -- there's not much an OS can do to avoid user stupidity. - TMFinept, on 10/23/2009, -0/+18To be clear, it's "awesome" in Finland, which makes this picture awesome for its sarcasm. Besides, I thought the foulest of insults in Iraq and Iran was shoe-related?
- phpirate, on 10/23/2009, -1/+19Alright I like linux too, but don't call it "windoze" because you make us all look like fags. Same thing with M$.

Try to RTFA next time, eh? - lexbaby, on 10/23/2009, -3/+20Are those genuine copies of Windows 7?
