You take the cost of the asset your depreciating, subtract the estimated salvage value and then divide that by its useful life. Credit accumulated depreciation as you go along.

- cgomez, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Do you mean a case where a company had been depreciating over say, 10 years, but at year 5 finds that the fixed asset will actually have a useful like of 15 years? In that case, you have a change in accounting estimate where you would take the accumulated depreciation over those five years which you would subtract from the cost to find the new depreciable base. From there on out, use the new salvage value and the revised remaining useful life.
