- dukeeeey, on 11/15/2007, -11/+98The problem for vista is XP is too good.
- dillyhoo, on 11/15/2007, -7/+62"fewer architectural changes to Windows itself and more realistic release schedule " = "Do less and release it more often"... nice.
- EXreaction, on 11/15/2007, -3/+55From a comment on the page (it is really fitting):
I guess MS can't win. For years people have been saying that making all users admins by default is a big problem. They effectively sort it by making users pseudo admin and requiring confirmation before doing anything adminy. It's akin to requesting the root password for *nix. Yes it's pretty annoying and yes it's probably not quite implemented right but rather than saying it's a step in the right direction people just say it's a reason to switch to Linux.
Then people tell them that Mac OS is prettier and so they pretty up their UI. That's not good enough for people since it requires more hardware and the people who are prepared to pay to upgrade to a prettier interface already run a Mac.
Then MS are told that backwards compatibility is causing stability problems. THey remove some of their backwards compatibility to make a more stable platform and people moan that old apps and hardware don't work anymore.
As far as I can see, this is the Windows release that contains the most requested features of the OS. If MS give the public what they want they moan that it's not perfect or that what they wanted is stupid. If MS gives people what they need then people moan that it didn't include the things they want.
I wish people would stop moaning and pick the OS that suits them best. Incidentally, I'm writing this on my Linux PC using firefox. I also have a machine with XP installed. Since this combination meets my needs I don't run Vista. Pick the right tool for the job and shut up.
Posted at 4:35AM on Nov 15th 2007 by jonathan_lane - ApokalypseNow, on 11/15/2007, -28/+80XP does everything I want - which is to say, it runs my games, music, and movies. Vista would cost me more money to attempt to do the same thing, but do it slower on the same hardware - and this presupposes that there are drivers available for all of my hardware to let it run under Vista, and that they all work.
Vista offers me nothing of importance, has too many flaws, too little support from the community, and is both a DRM nightmare and a resource hog. It takes control of the computer and everything on it away from me. I cannot accept this. Here's to hoping that ReactOS does well. - belorion, on 11/15/2007, -1/+53This part made me laugh: "When it comes to addressing release issues, Microsoft has made the decision to be less transparent about release schedules, only making information available when the date is actually feasible." This sentence was *immediately followed by "Right now, Microsoft is aiming to launch Windows 7 sometime in 2010"
- rhabd0mancer, on 11/15/2007, -5/+55Why should I buy a new computer just to switch operating systems?
- f4nt0m4s, on 11/15/2007, -6/+49Vista's problem is lack of need: XP is rock solid. Once Vista gets a service pack, DX10 becomes more mainstream, and people start investing in newer and better hardware, Vista will take off. Maybe Microsoft chose to release Vista at an awkward time, but it's not a bad OS. It's just not changing much for the average XP user.
- estvir, on 11/15/2007, -15/+49> A system that is not modular is bound to become unmaintainable.
That's funny, because one of the core changes in Vista was that it actually is modular. I think this video covers some of it: http://channel9.msdn.com/Showpost.aspx?postid=1488 ...
Uh-oh, schestowitz is spewing anti-MS lies again, just yesterday he was going on about how Microsoft's "FUD" is bad but when he and others like the FSF do it, it's okay? Hypocrites. - hydrodev, on 11/15/2007, -3/+33*****
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -3/+31Case of Beauty that adds +12 smug?
- norman619, on 11/15/2007, -13/+40wow you are being dugg down for liking Vista. You gotta love Diggers
- coldcarbon, on 11/15/2007, -2/+25I don't know if you remember when XP came out. but everything you guys are saying about vista is what they said about xp. XP is crap I will stick with my windows 2000. There is no reason to upgrade. Most will get vista one day or another you will say you like it. and do the same thing with the next OS. Me I like all OS each is a tool to me and I use the right tool when I need it.
- spritom, on 11/15/2007, -2/+22I'm using Vista, XP, and Ubuntu on three computers at my desk. Vista isn't bad and is quite usable and has become my primary box for work. But for the gaming, that's what the XP box is for until DX10 becomes an issue. The Ubuntu box can do most things that the others can and does a few things better.
I like the $99 Vista idea that Dvorak mentioned. - EXreaction, on 11/15/2007, -6/+24...which is what Apple has been doing this whole time, and it is working great for them.
- MioTheGreat, on 11/15/2007, -6/+24Are you kidding?
You think the leap from 10.x to 10.(x+1) is anywhere near as significant as the leap from XP to Vista? I'll put it into perspective for you: If 10.5 has '300 new features', than Vista has a new feature list on the order of ten thousand.
Completely rewritten Audio and Network stacks, significantly overhauled graphics systtem, 3d desktop, seriously revamped security models, integrated search, etc. etc.
There has never been a Windows release with architectural changes this massive. Only the leap from 9x to NT actually compares to this, and even then, nearly every API was kept the same, and Windows wasn't nearly as complex as it is now. - CrackaPleeze, on 11/15/2007, -7/+23What? Your VM Vista wasn't earth-shattering? I'm shocked.
I've done linux, and like it, but Vista is really good, too. If you're smart enough to set up a VM then you're smart enough to know that a VM is hardly a fair basis on which to judge the VM's OS. - norman619, on 11/15/2007, -7/+23XP works just fine thanks.
- IEatHamburgers, on 11/15/2007, -1/+15Brilliant!
- Hiker, on 11/15/2007, -1/+15Hah. You hope ReactOS does well? Hope you brought lots of coffee and sammiches cos you're in for a ***** of a long wait there buddy.
- Chewie67, on 11/15/2007, -8/+21Ask any Statistician and they'll tell you that numbers lie.
Take a look at where the VAST MAJORITY of those copies of Vista were sold -- preinstalled on new PCs.
Now look at how many new PCs were sold in 2007 versus the number sold in 2002. Well would you look at that? Twice as many. Hmmm. Maybe that explains why Vista has such a high adoption rate.... - djbon2112, on 11/15/2007, -5/+18^^ Seconded. I tried using a roommate's XP computer earlier this week, and I could barely use it. I found it extremely cumbersome.
I was a Vista hater like most of you guys, UNTIL I ***** USED IT FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES. So stop bashing, and start using, and you'll see just how good it actually is. - TeacherOfHeroes, on 11/15/2007, -2/+14This works well for open source applications, but when companies that sell software for $$$ do it, it just looks like a cash grab.
On the other hand, Vista *was* a little late. - toxicityj, on 11/15/2007, -9/+21I fried the motherboard on my Vista machine (wooops) and had to revert back to my XP machine. It's driving me insane. Once you get used to Vista and have used it as long as I have (since it came out), there's no going back to XP. If the tools and fools on Digg would give Vista have a chance and pull their heads out of their asses, they'd realize that.
- Monti0, on 11/15/2007, -3/+15To summarize the startling revelations in this article: Microsoft will try to make fewer mistakes in the next version of Windows and it will be coming out in approximately 3 - 5 year's time.
How is this newsworthy / interesting enough to make Digg's frontpage? - cozmoz365, on 11/15/2007, -5/+17@estvir Well said, I am a Linux user myself and I am fed up with all the fanboy crap. All OS's have their problems including Linux considering it still has practically no support from commercial Software houses and hardware manufacturers for the desktop.
Apple's OS has bad printer support and as we all know cannot **REALLY** have its hardware upgraded.
Windows is still a very good desktop choice but it has got a HUGE bulge problem. As far as I am concerned the moment they deal with this I will happily pay for and switch back to Windows. - TheG2, on 11/15/2007, -3/+14They're the bastards but you're too stupid to install you're own OS? Yeah...I see how that is BestBuy's fault.
- ApokalypseNow, on 11/15/2007, -7/+18Dude, you need to check out Chewie67's post. He just pwned you.
Retail sales of Vista have been incredibly poor. RAM manufacturers ramped up production earlier this year to meet a demand for extra memory that never came due to the lack of adoption of Vista - as a result, RAM is incredibly cheap right now.
Again, the vast majority of all copies of Vista were preinstalled on new PC's, as the major PC retailers (like Dell) did not offer XP on many of their systems shortly after the release of Vista - it took a great deal of demand from the consumers to force Dell to start offering XP again. - unknownsoldierX, on 11/15/2007, -1/+12It's called R&D, *****. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp. One team is working on Vista SP1, while another is beginning development of Windows 7.
What are your thoughts on the auto industry? Do you think car makers wait until the last '07 model rolls of the line, then they start design process on the '08 model? - toxicityj, on 11/15/2007, -28/+39The only lesson I've learned is that I can't go back to XP after Vista.
- PatoLucas, on 11/15/2007, -2/+13You sir, win the whole thread, well said
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+12XP runs like a tank, my games and apps work, and that is all I care about.
- hockey, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11At least he didn't post it in the Apple section like yesterday's flamebaiting Vista submission .
- f4nt0m4s, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11Sounds like you shouldn't be administrating any operating system if you can't save files to your C: drive....
- MioTheGreat, on 11/15/2007, -6/+16Haven't had that problem with Vista.
I just had to reinstall due to Visual Studio 2008's beta ***** something over that I didn't want to spend a few hours fixing, but aside from that, my install was from like February. XP never lasted that long. - EXreaction, on 11/15/2007, -0/+10Why the heck would you need to write files on C:/?
It is setup that way for security, you know, the whole thing about if you destroy your user because of some virus or something the rest of the OS will be perfectly fine.
If you really need to write stuff to the root C:/ drive and don't give a ***** about using the built in permissions/security, just change the permissions to let you write to it, it takes a whole 5 seconds! - EXreaction, on 11/15/2007, -24/+33http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Windows_ ...
Also, you should have absolutely no problem with drivers in Vista, I haven't found anything that requires a driver to be downloaded yet.
It isn't a resource hog. It is using _unused_ resources to make your computer faster.
It doesn't take a damned thing away from you, sure it has a more elaborate permissions system, but if you hate what Windows has for permissions you'll probably hate what UNIX has because it is quite similar (except the UNIX permission system is simpler).
I don't really give a damn if XP does everything you want, XP would do a lot of what I want with some 3rd party applications, but it would never have the mass amounts of built in drivers, or SuperFetch. So stop spreading FUD! - RogerStrong, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Vista works just fine for me on both my home and work PCs. It came preinstalled on one and as a free upgrade for the other.
It doesn't have enough improvements that I'd pay Vista's price to replace XP, but really, it works just fine. - MioTheGreat, on 11/15/2007, -8/+16You're absolutely correct. After using Vista, XP is clunky and primitive.
- StoneLox, on 11/15/2007, -4/+12i feel like all the people with vista comments either A) have a mac or 2) dont use vista
i have it at work and after a few days i was used to it - MioTheGreat, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10They didn't completely rewrite the kernel.
Most of the other things, however, are more or less valid. - TheG2, on 11/15/2007, -5/+13Because this story isn't about Linux in any way and we don't need another Linux ego-fest.
- SirBotchness, on 11/15/2007, -1/+9As far as the launch goes sure, they need to make sure drivers are available, and that software is compatible (Alcohol 120% destroyed my install). As far as stability and functionality goes, vista is fine and has been since launch for me.
- pathy, on 11/15/2007, -2/+10Probably extremely frustrated with Finder.
- Nalin, on 11/15/2007, -0/+81) If you use a limited user account, you have to input the full password of an admin account on the system. Sort of like issuing an 'su -' on a Linux box. If you are already running an "admin" account, you just have to click OK.
2) If UAC pops up when you delete icons off your desktop, seriously, learn how to use Windows. You obviously aren't doing it right. Customizing menus also should not make UAC pop up since it is local to the user (but I could be wrong, I have never done it.)
Really, the only time UAC pops up is if you are, gasp, installing new software or changing settings in the System Preferences. And if you try to alter files in a directory you don't have direct permission to alter. Try looking at the security settings for your C:\Program Files directory. If you don't want UAC to bug you for altering files in a directory, you have to modify the security settings for that directory. For my D: drive on my PC, I gave Administrators and Users read/write permissions. Now UAC doesn't bug me at all. If you don't care about losing some security, give the Administrators and Users groups full permission for your hard drive. - FredFredrickson, on 11/15/2007, -1/+9Why is Vista any worse about DRM than Mac OS X (which won't even let me take screenshots with the DVD Player open), or your Blue-Ray disc player?
- majortom1981, on 11/15/2007, -1/+8I completely agree with your comment. A lot of people bash microsoft for no reason. HEck apple is bashing vista saying this feature is not in vista when it is.
- majortom1981, on 11/15/2007, -3/+10They still made arcitectural changes. They redid how vista handles both sound and the network .The redid how the os handles drivers. They added the uac . They changed how the os uses ram.
All these are huge changes. Which obviously the hardware manufacturers didnt like because we are still getting drivers that crash vista. - MioTheGreat, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7Wow. People are digging jayfehr up, and me down?
Look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinFS
"WinFS (short for Windows Future Storage)"
"WinFS is not a physical file system; rather, it provides schematized data modeling capabilities on top of the NTFS file system." - MedHead, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7Because it mentions Vista in a bad light. It's hip to hate Vista. Vista's sales aren't bad, and not everyone dislikes it: however, because the "right" people dislike it, it then seems like everyone dislikes it.
- norman619, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7Why do you want to dump stuff on C? Best practice is to have a small physical drive or a partition only for your OS. You then have other partitions or physical drives for your applications and storage. You learn the wisdom of this when your OS craps out and takes all your data with it. Even under XP this is how you should do it.
