- Murdats, on 12/22/2007, -5/+79why is everyone dumping on microsoft about this when it seems that its kaspersky's fault entirely.
- apzdsx, on 12/22/2007, -12/+51You Linux/Mac fanboys are pathetic.
- pyronik, on 12/22/2007, -2/+28this is a retarded no story, i like linux and i like windows.. stop being tools about it. If people don't like windows don't use it but I really don't feel like hearing everyone bitch about an operating system all ***** day. Ok, windows does crash every now and then. Ive run it for multiple weeks at a time without a problem, if thats only 65% efficient compared to X operating system then whatever. Most of the problems come down to ***** 3rd party applications anyways. I don't run antivirus and I don't get malware, trojans, etc just because im not retarded.. hmmm 36kb dropitlikeitshot.com file..YAY my favorite song why don't i download it and play it.. oh wait.. its a virus .. damn you microsoft.
Trust me i could give a ***** if microsoft went the way of the dinosaur, the second that linux can provide me better compatability I will switch to it. Till then I'll deal with your occassional bug. - bjornski, on 12/22/2007, -3/+28You don't understand the fanbois very well.
- jeffthejiff, on 12/22/2007, -3/+21The company I work for sells systems loaded with Kaspersky. You wouldn't believe the number of support calls we got yesterday about this...
- Rotzooi, on 12/22/2007, -2/+16Kaspersky may have made a big blunder with this, but it's still a superior product to 99% of the A/V (and firewall) crap that's out there. Norton/Symantec, Norman AV and McAfee both routinely cause huge problems for my customers.
I recommend them Kaspersky or NOD32, or AVG. Those three hadn't let me down until this issue with Kaspersky.
Still, I'll be a loyal customer to them. Things like these happen. - schoate09, on 12/22/2007, -3/+14Honestly, I like Windows. The interface works great for my needs, the software has always been reliable. I don't download the "free pr0nz media player", so I've never had a virus/malware. There's a wide selection of software, and it usually has the most support. If you like other OSes, great for you too, that's a PERSONAL CHOICE, just like mine, why waste time arguing a point thats opinion?
- xman2000, on 12/22/2007, -0/+11Kaspersky made an error but the software doesn't do anything until you tell it to. I run it myself and got a little prompt telling me about a "trojan.generic". I did a little research and realized it was a bug so I told Kaspersky to ignore it. Like most problems this one can be solved with a little common sense; something Linux or OS-X does not come with out of the box - it is either pre-installed between your ears or it isn't.
- Giga, on 12/22/2007, -2/+12I know for a fact that WoW works fine on Linux...
- theaceoffire, on 12/22/2007, -0/+9You don't have to go to untrustworthy sites to get malware, and the software varies based on who made it and what version of windows it was originally targeted for.
I install a stripped down version of windows (Windows essential) on family computers who are addicted to it... Thing fits on a cd, has firefox etc already installed and configured, etc.
And the reason people argue is simple: Its fun to argue. - bjornski, on 12/22/2007, -4/+11@actorboy:
I do a lot of it. My machine does office work, and net work as well as yours. Without a question.
If all I wanted was a machine to type of documents and surf the web, listen to the occasional MP3 and maybe watch a video, sure, maybe I'd use Linux, I have in the past, and quit because it did NOT do everything I wanted it to do. . I do a lot more with my machine than that. Audio mixdowns, video editing, gaming, web work, office work.
I do it all on my machine.
What I was retorting to was your comment about "I'd be willing to bet that I can do anything on Linux, that you can do on windoze, and probably better!"
No. You can't. Face it.
My machine does more than yours, that's all there is to it. - inactive, on 12/22/2007, -2/+9IE is a terrible browser, but that doesn't stop Windows from being a good OS.
- DeskFlyer, on 12/22/2007, -1/+7Reminds me of this: http://www.bbspot.com/News/2005/01/microsoft_antis ...
- deiphobus, on 12/22/2007, -0/+6I can't wait for Apple's market share to increase. More people = more targets for hackers. Don't tell me your Mac is invulnerable. You know nothing about computer security, that's why you made the switch. Can't wait for hackers to deliver the bitch slap to mac fanboys.
- boflaade, on 12/22/2007, -0/+6Are you saying that Linux could never be screwed up by a bad program?
- lithiumsystems, on 12/22/2007, -6/+12How much you want to bet it was a disgruntled employee? There is no way that ***** got through unless there is ZERO QA on their sig files.
- SundayTrain, on 12/22/2007, -2/+8Honestly obxjt, it's probably only a HAHAHAH....
- grimward, on 12/22/2007, -12/+18I stopped using kaspersky years ago for this very reason, sad to see that the spiral downward didn't end there...
And to the linux fanboys, you're really giving your OS a bad name by proving at least some of their userbase consists of e-penis envious morons that feel so threatend by windows that you have to slag it in an article such as this. - schoate09, on 12/22/2007, -2/+7*****.
- bjornski, on 12/22/2007, -4/+9Maybe he can set a new high score in Tux Racer! One of the 10 best Linux games available!
- dbug, on 12/22/2007, -1/+6Wow. Did you come up with that all by yourself?!
- SundayTrain, on 12/22/2007, -2/+7Like the days back when we had to rename filemananger.exe to filemanager.com in win3.11 because Mcafee blacklisted it ....Smooth move and well played!
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4I've had Kaspersky for a few months and I'm pretty happy with it. At least it finds threats unlike Norton which will tell you everything's fine when you know there are problems on the PC. And when Norton does find something it's never able to fix it.
- Phocion55, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4My IQ dropped 15 points from reading this comment thread.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4SUdo make me a sandwhich.
- deiphobus, on 12/22/2007, -1/+5Yeah. Explorer, a critical component of the Windows, is a virus. It makes perfect sense.
Seems like fanboys are getting dumber and dumber by the minute. The only thing they prove is their stupidity when it comes to computer security. - grawity, on 12/22/2007, -2/+5This post lacks a high-rated comment.
- SundayTrain, on 12/22/2007, -2/+5You silly micro$oft hax0rs are l33t! Kewl.......This argument died after win 95, catch up buddy. stop being a bully and rubbing it it...Da peeps aint clueless no mo! biatch! Water is wet......Beating a dead horse gets you a ...dead horse....
- xman2000, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3That is pretty sad.... Kaspersky is consistently rated at the top for virus detection and virus removal. It also happens to have the lowest cpu utilization of any of the major AV programs. Do you hold all software developers to a one strike and you are out standard or just ones you haven't used or even researched before?
- TheSeeker11, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3***** happens. Case closed.
- boflaade, on 12/22/2007, -3/+6It's the "anti-virus" program that screwed things up. Microsoft had nothing to do with Kasperky's screw up.
- boflaade, on 12/22/2007, -1/+4I'm amazed at what Microsoft operating systems contend with. Not long ago, a popular firewall was creating headaches. Millions of modifications and add-ons to the system and in comparison, few problems. People buy Windows and immediately begin modifying the program. They scream bloody murder if all they do to the system, eventually causes problems.
- martalli, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3The EULA and cost of windows means it could hardly be a virus. However, the WGA makes Windows more of an elaborate spyware software, IMHO.
- amirman, on 12/22/2007, -3/+6agreed, i use both linux and windows, but i use firefox on both, IE users don't deserve the internet.
- boflaade, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3NOD 32 is the best in my book.
- boflaade, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3MAC has limitations too. If there were more users of MAC and people were downloading millions of different programs onto it, Mac would have the same problems.
- KaJuN4, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3A few weeks ago I decided to install Ubuntu to see what all the hype was about. As it turns out that was easily my worst decision of 2007. It was only after I had it installed that I found out that my graphics card wasn't supported and there was no driver available for it. So all the "eye candy" that Linux lovers go on about didn't work for me. If you set out to design an operating system that makes installing programs as hard as it could be it would still be easier to do it than trying to do it with Ubuntu. Having to run code and modify config files just to install a simple problem is ridiculous. With Windows you just click the mouse a few times and it's done. And the program works! The first time!
I finally got fed up with it and decided to go back to XP. Yet another thing the Linux lovers don't want you to know is that it's extremely hard to get it off your system. I tried everything: reformatting, deleting partitions, running the Windows install. Much of the Linux community isn't very helpful either. They would rather type out an essay about why you shouldn't switch from Linux rather than answer a simple question about how to uninstall it. I was somehow finally able to confine Ubuntu to a smaller portion so I could get XP up and running again. I'm still struggling with getting it off my system and now it's wasting my had drive space. - bjornski, on 12/22/2007, -1/+4And then there's the "I got a Mac because Windows is TOO HARD to use. It just works!" commercials.
Gotta love those. And I HATE that Mac douche they use. Whatever his name is. I don't care enough to learn it. - malcolmboston, on 12/22/2007, -2/+5i have, ubuntu which is supposedly the most popular linux there is at the moment (correct me if im wrong) and i wasnt impressed mate.
- netdroid9, on 12/22/2007, -3/+6...Huh? Explorer is one of the most crucial components of Windows. An operating system is almost useless without a means of executing commands, and that's what Explorer does.
- Gudeldar, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3Exactly, I may be a Linux user (I'm typing this on an Ubuntu machine) doesn't mean I hate Microsoft so much that I can't realize when things aren't their fault.
- Tippis, on 12/22/2007, -1/+4You can't actually *replace* IE with Firefox -- you can only choose to use Fx for your web surfing needs. There is far more to IE than that, unfortunately :-/
- catalysis, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3This was detected and wiped out by my zonealarm earlier today. The only way to fix windows was to boot into safe mode and reinstall explorer from the windows cd. Otherwise it just loads your desktop background and the UI never comes up. Kind of annoying to say the least. I'm sure there are a bunch of pissed off people who don't know how to fix their system.
- dezman2003, on 12/22/2007, -1/+4Yeah I'm pretty sure that whole scenario is either made up or just a dream you had.
- theOster, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3cue "new here?" jokes...
but seriously, i think ralph macchio said it best about his parents - "they love to argue, they LIVE to argue" so it is with os fanboys..
so it goes... - keegangrayson, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3why can't they just be different, rather than one being better?
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -2/+4It's Windows, but you called it "Windoze". That's so cute. Never gets old.
- ilgaz, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3It is widely known that heuristic scan developers give special attention to Windows core parts because they sometimes act like a virus themselves. Also it is surprising that no comment/story tells an interesting fact, Kaspersky updates its definitions like every HOUR, so in case your explorer was "locked", it would need just 1 hour to make it work again.
