- AgentAnderson, on 01/04/2008, -10/+171I'm more interested in how they got IE disabled.
- skoles, on 01/04/2008, -18/+120Just open any window and type where you want to go in the address bar. That works too.
- Daniel15, on 01/04/2008, -7/+91Haha, I do this sometimes at the public library here...
On the systems used to search the catalogue, they've locked down the systems in every way imaginable. There's only one desktop item ("Catalogue"), no start menu, and all Windows key shortcuts are disabled. The "catalogue" desktop shortcut starts Internet Explorer on the home page (the catalogue, obviously - http://catalogue.darebin-libraries.vic.gov.au/). In IE itself, the address bar is hidden with no option to re-enable it, and every single menu item is disabled except for Help. Normally, you'd think that you can't access anything else...
I just press F1 to get into help, then use the "Goto URL" thing to go to other websites. You can also use it to browse the C drive by going to C:/. I started MS Paint, made an image that says "PWNED", and set it as the desktop on that PC :D - centran, on 01/04/2008, -4/+80Steps are:
1. start calculator or some other basic windows program.
2. Click Help then Help Topics.
3. In the Help window right click the title bar and select jump to url...
4. Type in url in appropriate box making sure to use the full qualifying address (ie. http:// before the address)
On a side not to those running a firewall; I bet this will be the first time you see calc.exe requesting to access the internet! - nymphetamine, on 01/04/2008, -3/+67Please don't do that.
- dumpyhumpy, on 01/04/2008, -2/+46crazy? no, but helpful, yes.
- MadOtaku, on 01/04/2008, -3/+38No it doesn't; that is just IE. This is how to surf when IE is locked down.
- sandfish, on 01/04/2008, -1/+30Can be done via Group Policy, or your local system's Policy.
- goldfenix, on 01/04/2008, -3/+29Well, now I have even more ways to get public terminals to start sharing Bit Torrent files. :D
I sincerely hope that my efforts one day land, say, CitiBank in a war with the RIAA. That could be a battle for the ages... - TheSabre, on 01/04/2008, -4/+28You are so 1337
- D3koy, on 01/04/2008, -2/+26The "computers" at my school don't have cd-drives...or USB ports :(
- jordan314, on 01/04/2008, -2/+24Doesn't quite work...Also who would disable IE but allow cmd... :/
- skyfire1, on 01/04/2008, -5/+23Hey guys, you can't install firefox if you can't download or install firefox setup exe.
- palmdoc, on 01/04/2008, -2/+19Thumbdrive + Portable Firefox FTW!!!
- johnn11238, on 01/04/2008, -2/+19umm...or you can just use that cool "help function" trick...
- allyant, on 01/04/2008, -0/+16You FAIL for having norton installed.
- ZachSka87, on 01/04/2008, -3/+18Or, I hear there's this great trick where you can just use the help function from basic windows programs!!!
- centran, on 01/04/2008, -0/+15If you are referring to an explorer(not internet explorer) window like My Computer then I have seen locked down computers where that wouldn't work.
I have also seen some super locked down computers but strangely the work around was clicking on a link in an email or word document. You couldn't open IE normally(clicking it or even command line) but that would somehow force IE open. - Rammsteined, on 01/04/2008, -0/+14Er, Bossa, you do realize that we're talking about a situation here where there is no browser -- only this help trick? So you'd have to use the help trick to get Firefox in the first place, assuming of course the download isn't blocked by your firewall.
- trollick, on 01/04/2008, -3/+15telnet digg.com 80
- dotlizard, on 01/04/2008, -0/+12should've. it begins ... "Ever find yourself sitting in front of a computer that's been locked down by an overzealous IT administrator who won't let you install any software or even open Internet Explorer or Firefox?" it refers to those computers, say, in a classroom or other public computer which is not supposed to be used for the internet (but you want to anyway). but seriously ... RTFA, not just a pretty acronym.
- Flavor, on 01/04/2008, -0/+11I've done this at Best Buy on their own display systems to check the current price of a product via Cnet or BB's site, always check their website and and ask for that price. Great way to save a few bucks.
- B3000, on 01/04/2008, -2/+12RTFA
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -1/+11No.
- ConceptJunkie, on 01/04/2008, -0/+9If you truly disabled IE, half of Explorer's functionality wouldn't work either.
- B3000, on 01/04/2008, -2/+10RTFA, it'll keep you from looking like a douche.
- Philbert, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8I used to do this when I worked at Best Buy. that was a little different though. IE was still installed, we just didn't have any access to it. What I would do was find a PDF document and open it up, then there was a Check For Updates button on the program that would open the browser to Adobe.com. From there of course you could go where ever you want. I used it to help customers find music with allmusic.com since the in-store system sucked.
- Doomsan, on 01/04/2008, -7/+15Why would i want to surf the net on IE?
- zdiggler, on 01/04/2008, -1/+9the thing is when you do that on "My Computer" box , it will open up, iExplorer.exe which is disabled. If you do it thought the help trick iexplorer.exe won't run but embeded version will be in help viewer.
This trick work will be great for places like bookstores kiosk etc.
There was a way to browse the web thought those bestbuy kiosk too. You search for product for msn internet and it will direct to msn.com search page and you can just go any where you like from there.
I'm not sure it work any more thought.

http://www.hackosis.com/index.php/2008/01/03/hidde ... - Speed, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7Oh you'd be surprised. Schools, for instance usually get the lowest-grade techs ever. And nontitle, if cmd is disabled, then batch files usually don't work either.
- Yenly, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7Just got a new boss at work who I'm sure wouldn't be too keen on us using firefox to bypass the web filtering system... portable firefox was the perfect solution. No install, no trace.
I just made and 2nd copy of it on my flash drive with the IE theme and icon packages.... now it looks almost identical to IE. My co-workers love me more and more each day.... - DteK, on 01/04/2008, -0/+7HAHA, im posting this from the calc help file on my work laptop.
This would have been good to know back in school - zwaldowski, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6He's right. All of the permissions at my school are Novell-based. Our network goes down regularly, causing the "workstation only" accounts to have 90% permissions.
- lvdrummer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Any experienced Windows Network admin knows this one and I wouldn't expect it to change anytime in the near future. Most companies that care enough to disable IE using group policy have or should have that added measure of a hardware web filter which gives you the ability to completely block specific users or workstations from the internet, limit them to specific sites or filter sites by genre. But don't forget... you can still use google as a proxy providing your admin allows google!!
- TaB42, on 01/04/2008, -1/+7If IE is locked properly, that won't work.
However, I hear there's a great trick with the Help function that's not a retarded point out of additional ways to circumvent network administration. - jiminizer, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Portal Firefox? ... The cookie is a lie...
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6This didn't answer my questions regarding the calculator at all!
- zwaldowski, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Why would they disable help? It's the one place nobody would look.
- colto, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5don't know why you are getting dugg down as you are absolutely correct. The file is called command.com and is under C:WindowsSystem32
- Rammsteined, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6Only works if you have a memory stick, other wise you need some form of browser, unless you have the unique ability to remember the firefox download URL.
- billinjapan, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6What if it can't boot from a USB thumb drive, most likely someone has disabled booting from CD, USB and maybe even floppies.
- rebopper, on 01/04/2008, -1/+6My USB ports require a retina scan first...
- yojiffyskippy, on 01/04/2008, -3/+8You must be very smart.
- Frost9999, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5Shift+F10 is a right mouse click in WIndows.
- TheFinestShadow, on 01/04/2008, -9/+14Wow, your school sucks majorly. Our school's security is terrible. I almost changed the net admin's password on accident.
- DteK, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5link?
- Impulsar, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5So the school removed 'are' web browser?
Can't help but think that for every 1 IQ point the intratubes gain in real-time smarts, they lose 5 of the said same in virtual, anytime stuptitude. - MadOtaku, on 01/04/2008, -0/+5It does it in XP as well; entering an internet address into an Explorer window's navigation bar changes Explorer into Internet Explorer as the two are really the same application.
