See: Bit Torrent - Spanq, on 06/11/2008, -27/+69No, people hate Vista because it's an unnecessary OS. All the new features it comes with are useless to the average user and do not provide any benefit worth the value of upgrading hardware or paying a couple hundred bucks for. Likewise, just because computers have gigs of RAM nowadays doesn't mean an OS needs to rape every ounce of it.
If Vista did half the ***** Microsoft spoonfed us it'd do (ie: shut down instantly, not require reboots for driver installations, have a new file system, etc.), maybe more people wouldn't compare it to being choked by Ballmer's neverending sweat-producing ball satchel. - LukeBeaumont, on 06/11/2008, -0/+35I never knew cores could duel? That is sweet!
- JasonCox, on 06/11/2008, -2/+31Flash forward two years on Digg: ***** Seven, I'm sticking with Vista!
- insinuate, on 06/11/2008, -8/+34As long as I have my backup copies of the disc, I can always wipe out any PC out there and have XP running in a jiffy. Long live Windows XP
- insinuate, on 06/11/2008, -9/+30***** you, this is something most of us have used for many many years, know it inside and out and can solve practically any problem that happens while running it. And what do you propose? I go to Vista? Get the ***** out of here.
- jstem1994, on 06/11/2008, -0/+19How to keep it? Is my full-install XP Pro disk going to self destruct?
- Meep3D, on 06/11/2008, -4/+21If Linux really is as good as everyone promoting it says, then why have the usage statistics not shifted significantly in the last 3 years?
Across the board on all the websites I manage (over 20) catering for all aspects of user demographics Linux accounts for approx. 0.33% of visitors, up from about 0.3% 3 years ago. The Linux revolution is simply not happening. I am not bashing, I am simply stating facts.
The really unfortunate truth in all this is the 99% of the people promoting Linux simply do not want to hear why people are not using it, instead preferring to use the 'It's better than Windows', 'It's Free', 'Proprietary' and the rest of the tired rhetoric.
I've used Linux, I've tried to like it, but when I do use it my productivity takes such a hit that I simply can't justify it. The problem is that everyone who doesn't use it, when stating why, is considered a troll that must be debunked and nobody actually seems bothered to listen to the criticism rather than just being hell bent on refuting it.
Sure it works great for some people and I wouldn't for a second try to tell them that Windows (or OSX) is better for them, but for people to honestly switch the distro makers will need to start to listen to the people who _don't_ use it, rather than the self congratulatory echo chamber that is the community (which stifles any negative opinion).
It's like the emperors new clothes. - heavystone, on 06/11/2008, -0/+15Ahha, well here lets try that again: http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/operat ...
- chris9902, on 06/11/2008, -17/+31You know it was understandable in the first few months of Vista's release that people would bitch about things like this, things they don't understand. But come on! it's 2008 and Vista already has SP1.
You must be a total moron if you still think Vista is crap/bloated/slow etc. You come on sites like digg with your little rant and a group of equally stupid people digg you up, give you that little pat on the back. Hey good job guys, you're really sticking it to the man... pffft - daviddiaz, on 06/11/2008, -2/+15you posted a dead link, that's why
- zadadka, on 06/11/2008, -3/+15Why the need to re-install?
Use DriveImageXML.
Keep an image of your fully configured XP system with all it's programs etc etc that you can re-paste time and time again.
It's easy and it's free.
http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm - heavystone, on 06/11/2008, -9/+20FYI, You can still "buy" XP for years and years to come. Just buy the latest OS Microsoft has. MS has always said that you can freely "downgrade" to a previous OS version from the one you have bought.
So in other words, if you buy Vista you get XP.
Want proof? http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/operat ... - dandonia, on 06/11/2008, -3/+13I notice massive performance differences between vista and xp. Why would I want my system to feel like I downgraded it just so I could have the latest OS?
If moving on meant moving up I would be there - but the truth is Vista is too much of a resource hog for me to want it. It brings nothing to table that I can't replicate or better in XP. - Jeffler, on 06/11/2008, -1/+10I don't get the whole vendetta against vista. I just upgraded to it this week, refusing to budge from XP, but it started leaking RAM like mad. And Vista so far has been much better, mostly in the just mentioned RAM management department. SP1 is very good, the security messages aren't hard to get used to, and, just like XP, Vista is a beast if you tune it right.
Vista in the beginning was not that good but I'm very satisfied with my upgrade now. - SillyDigger, on 06/11/2008, -3/+12Please do us all a favor and stay in school.
- heavystone, on 06/11/2008, -1/+9Serious? I give out good information and people are digging me down for this? ***** man, whats wrong with Digg? You wanted to know how to get XP, and I just gave it to you!!!!!
- cor315, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8Agreed, I'll stick with my Windows 98 thank you very much
- BenBenMan, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8That's because it does have an old interface, as it was released in 2001. Using a Mac does not make you a better person. Kthxbai.
- turpialito, on 06/11/2008, -1/+8It's the apps, man. If, say, Adobe's apps were available for Linux like they are on MacOS or Win/whatever you'd see a sharp rise in Linux usage.
- phoomp, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7"All the new features it comes with are useless to the average user and do not provide any benefit worth the value of upgrading hardware or paying a couple hundred bucks for"
Of course, the same could be said about almost every OS with the exception of Linux (until it's evolution stabilizes) - halspuppet, on 06/11/2008, -0/+7mine is making a ticking noise right now.
- SSCrow, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7Useless features for the average user?
WTF, my mom went out and bought a new comp, and holy *****. Even I was impressed with some of those common features they added.
Live contacts, Tagging images for Windows Photo Gallery, Live Calender. There are a lot of great apps that are clean and simple that really make Vista an approachable OS for the average user.
Undo hate by people who should STFU and stop bitching about a new OS. No one ever seems to bitch about the new versions of OSX, even when they don't add very much with each release. - santaliqueur, on 06/11/2008, -2/+8Only while you are downloading Deliverance from The Pirate Bay.
- misterjangles, on 06/11/2008, -0/+6I actually have been one of those people griping about Vista for a while here which you might see in my old comments. I made three previous attempts to switch starting with the RC version. I finally decided to absolutely force myself to switch after SP1. Not because I really like Vista, but just to stay current I suppose. After a couple of days of tweaking and configuring a few things I have to admit I'm content. I turned off all the eye candy and set it up for performance and it's running as fast as my old XP was. Granted, I pretty much only use visual studio and outlook. I don't really notice major new features but there are a lot of little improvements. Basically what I'm saying is that it doesn't suck too bad!
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -1/+7"No, people hate Vista because it's an unnecessary OS"
Says who? A Mac user?
First, XP went through the same exact thing, yet now you cant't get people to part with it.
The new Vista Media center is awesome for storing, recording, burning everything, watching TV, etc...
Everything else you are right, is window dressing. But mactards were always complaining how "shiny" their OS was, ok now Vista is better.
To upgrade to XP from win98 you needed to buy more memory and a better video card. This is when costs for memory and a video card were higher. Now Vista asks you buy additional memory and a better video card that would cost you under $200 easy !!!
And you're still complaining? For what? Still living at your mom's place? - jdaniel284, on 06/11/2008, -2/+7"I'm confused why someone would even want to keep using XP. Switch to Linux or MacOS already. What's the point going with XP or Vista."
The point is, that a lot of us us XP on our home system because it is the best OS for the tasks at hand.
I use Linux at work. I use Linux on thousands of processors to do massively parallel linear algebra work. I even have Linux running on my work machine for development purposes.
But just because I am an expert Linux user, doesn't mean that Linux is the best solution for every problem. Sometimes you require a screwdriver, sometimes you need the pliers. Linux and XP are two different tools suitable for different purposes. One is not always superior over the other.
Ignorantly drooling out absolute pro-Linux or pro-Mac slogans without offering anything else to the discussion makes you look like a stooge. - Nuhaus, on 06/11/2008, -4/+9Been running Vista side by side with XP for a while now on the same machine. There are just too many inconsistencies, slowdowns, and plain wacky forms of behaviour. Vista is slower, less reliable, and won't work with many of my peripherals.I need my bluetooth headset and I prefer the speed of XP on my system (quad core with an 8800 GTX). I was slow to upgrade to XP when it came out too, but now that a year has passed I still don't see a need for Vista.
- MattBlackCat, on 06/11/2008, -1/+6Idiot
- inactive, on 06/11/2008, -8/+13Vista works fine. You pussies don't know how to upgrade your hardware or use Windows.
- turpialito, on 06/11/2008, -0/+5I'd say: Please do us all a favor and go back to school.
- chris9902, on 06/11/2008, -1/+5"XP IS BETTER AS VISTA!"
what? - spacebuddy, on 06/11/2008, -1/+5If you have to run Windows then Vista is the way to go. It is much more secure than XP and runs great on the proper hardware. It is a matter of time before XP fades out like Windows 98 did.
- luckyguy2000, on 06/11/2008, -3/+7its even more bloated than xp used to be.
its just xp with some eyecandy coating, some not thought through new features, artificially exclusive directx10 and new bugs. but internal we still have the old old old NT kernel.
Windows Vista came out because MS couldnt develop a new windows with a new kernel in time and needed to put out a new windows for making money. its no wonder so many ppl dont see the need of upgrading. windows xp is bugfixed, faster, easier to use and basically the same OS as vista.
ive vista on all my windows machines, but i regret upgrading and most of the time i use my debian machine now. - davewelsh79, on 06/11/2008, -1/+5Not after Microsoft starts refusing you any additional activations. That is unless you have the corporate version of XP that doesn't need activation.
I suppose you could find some kind of crack. - Wang, on 06/11/2008, -3/+6Seriously, just move on :) There comes a time where you need to give up your legacy OS and move to the new technology. Yes, some people might need to upgrade their hardware in order to get things smooth - what a surprise, welcome to technology :) Vista works very well - give it a go.
- DarkShroud, on 06/11/2008, -1/+4I remember trying to cling to 98SE. Then SP2 came out for XP. I upgraded and didn't look back. I upgraded to Vista shortly after it was released and haven't had a problem beyond my printer not working for a month. Most people experience the same. They finally upgrade to Vista and gasp! actually enjoy the new features.
- WomensUnderwear, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3if you're sleeping with them you're doing it wrong
- sirmasterboy, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3I know nobody cares about my opinion but i want to try and clear up some misconceptions about Vista. Everyone who says that Vista is a resource hog and thinks it uses more Memory than XP simply doesn't understand how Vista manages memory.
If you look at physical memory usage on XP boot it's about 400mb on my 2GB system. That's 20%, now what you may not realize is that XP is putting the rest of it's memory usage in the pagefile. Now this is a bad way of doing things because the pagefile is extremely slow but back in 2001 people just didn't have enough RAM to run a modern OS like XP. Now that vista is out and 4GB of memory is common, Vista actually doesn't use a pagefile at all. It will stick all of the memory into physical RAM. If you add the RAM + pagefile in XP and compare that to the RAM in Vista you WILL see that they are within 2% of each other in terms of memory usage.
Another reason that Vista SEEMS to be using more memory is because of superfetch. After using Vista for awhile it starts to see trends in application usage and will start dynamically caching all or parts of programs to memory before I even open them. For a real world example i use Photoshop all the time. On XP it will always take about 10 seconds or so to open. Vista however, has learned when i use Photoshop and almost always has it mostly pre-cached for me, thus it only takes a second or 2 to open. Also, Vista isn't stupid about memory, the moment another applications needs memory, superfetch will dump any of its cached memory which takes only nanoseconds.
Another great feature of Vista is Aero. Not in the respect that it is a niver GUI but in the fact of what it is really for. A GPU accelerated GUI. In XP, simply moving a window around real quick can spike your CPU up to 50% or more. If you try this in Vista with Aero turned on the CPU barely hits 5%. I don't know about you but I think this is a great feature.
I really think that anyone who doesn't like Vista should really give it a fair shot because it really is a good OS. - FairDinkumMate, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3The kernel basically IS the OS - everything else is just eye candy!
So upgrading everything EXCEPT the kernel is like restoring everything in an old car EXCEPT the motor. It'll look a lot better, but won't necessarily run any better! - gcauthon, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3How to keep Windows XP... Step 1, keep Windows XP.
- chris9902, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3I understand your point that Vista isn't designed for computers from the 90s but really, who cares? I don't care how well it handles 128mb of RAM when I'm using 4GB trying to get work done in Photoshop.
And what I'm talking about here is a consumer product that is designed to take advantage of modern technology. I could compare what you posted to one of Microsoft's other OSs. The ones they don't sell to the public but instead install on phones, PDAs etc. They are all subsets of the Windows technology. A lot of them now share a version of the .NET framework among other things. - o0joshua0o, on 06/11/2008, -2/+5Vista runs just fine on my 32 core machine with 4 terabytes of RAM and $5,000 video card. These n00bs just need to buy a new computer.
- chris9902, on 06/11/2008, -4/+7nothing. That's why you can run it on any computer. Even on the Asus eee as this video shows (that's 900mhz and 512mb of RAM)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWSi3JDibXg - sirhomer, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2While I don't agree with your 0.33% statement (all publically verifiable statistics show Linux usage to be higher), I think the reason we aren't seeing Linux taking over is because Windows is still the default operating system on most mainstream computers. I'd like to be able to go into a store like Best Buy and simply work out with a Gateway or some such running Ubuntu, but I can't.
If you want to argue on technical merit, I think it would be pretty easy for me to argue for Linux. There are websites that do it for me, for instance: http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net
As someone said also said above, the only advantage I can tell from years of using both operating systems, including Windows Vista, has nothing to do with Windows's technical merit and that is the availability of software, that is a result of it's huge marketshare. - DarkShroud, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2Oh, have you enjoyed playing any good games on Ubuntu?
- WomensUnderwear, on 06/11/2008, -2/+4I never knew cores could duel
- gothicform, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2Well I encountered this problem too but there's a simple solution to it, you simply disable the other hard drives leaving only your boot drive. That way it's treated as your bog standard IDE drive, even if it's SATA.
- DarkShroud, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2No, most of the population isn't represented by Digg and other "social news sites," & net forums.
