- Thumper13, on 05/09/2009, -3/+37Just turned my laptop over to Windows 7. I had no problems with Vista in two years running it. Great OS.
Win 7 is killing it in every aspect. Everything good, they improved greatly. New features are done extremely well.
The RC is better then my Vista was, and my Laptop runs faster with 7 then it did with Vista.
Can't say enough good things about 7.
get it! - novenator, on 05/08/2009, -1/+35Maybe its time to upgrade from Windows98.
- BugMeNot2, on 05/09/2009, -4/+337.
- ihatediggcom, on 05/09/2009, -6/+25here's all the info you need : Get Windows 7.
- MatzahMan, on 05/09/2009, -1/+16***** WINDOWS 98!
- Ramzy, on 05/09/2009, -1/+15I see nothing about the ***** folder view settings bug.
I'm sick and ***** tired of Vista forgetting my view settings when it comes to folders (icon size, sort by name/size/etc).
I know there are registry tweaks to fix this issue, but it's just a pain in the arse every time you format. - bratterscain, on 05/09/2009, -0/+13Jesus *****, syntax. I remember some of your comments from months ago. When are you going to buy a new keyboard?
- LMN8R, on 05/09/2009, -6/+18Benchmarks on a variety of systems showing Vista in most cases performing as well as XP, if not better, says that your computer is a POS or you don't know what you're doing.

http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=35 ... - computershack, on 05/09/2009, -1/+13It's a ***** hidden file. You asked Windows to show hidden files so it's just doing what you told it to, dumbass.
- EnigmaXIII, on 05/09/2009, -1/+11You're silly syntax billy!
If you checkout this revolutionary new thing called Windows Update - you'll learn how to save $100-200 every time a new Service Pack comes out
Imagine: XP, SP1, SP2 & SP3, Vista, SP1 soon SP2 - charbo187, on 05/09/2009, -0/+9GET BILL GATES IN HERE!
- A11YND, on 05/09/2009, -2/+10Thats the reason I won't switch to linux. I find it such a hassle to have to pay for every single live CD and package released.
For now, I'm sticking to OS/2 Warp. - morphie, on 05/09/2009, -3/+11"SP1 bringing Vista up to the same performance as XP SP2"?? Who are you kidding?
- bratterscain, on 05/09/2009, -1/+8Don't say that. I still have some old PC's that settled with it. I like Vista and Win7 but they're too high maintenance for those PC's.
- aahpandasrun, on 05/09/2009, -0/+7Windows 7 only seems bloated because you're used to Windows XP for so many years. If all you're concerned about is bloat, why don't you use Windows 2000?
- Kazbaeden, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6"* less bloat than Vista"
How do you define bloat? Windows 7 has all the features of Vista, plus more. - room23, on 05/09/2009, -17/+23Doesn't matter to me what people use, the faster XP dies the better.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6Why should it be sad? I'm using the Firefox 3.5 beta and find it much better than 3.0
- Paranormalized, on 05/09/2009, -0/+5"The fact that Windows Vista slows down after 6 months of use."
That's not a fact, it's FUD. My Vista system, which I use pretty heavily and only ever shut down or reboot for updates, has been running for well over a year without issue. - cyssero, on 05/09/2009, -1/+6I'm actually a big fan of Vista (yes, they exist) but I have to agree - this problem is outrageous.
I will set a folder view and next time I open it it will be all over the place. It's the only problem I have with Vista, but it's stupidly annoying. There are reg fixes which can stop it (and stop it permanently) such as - http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/70819-windows-ex ... but it shouldn't need to be done.
Apart from that - been a great OS for the past 2.5 years, got the Windows 7 RC1 and it's good - should be a suitable replacement. - BrownieMix, on 05/09/2009, -3/+8Windows Vista and 7 are a little too bloated for my tastes, and a couple of my drivers don't work on 7. I'll stick to XP.
- bratterscain, on 05/09/2009, -1/+5XP can do everything 7 can, right, just like they said about Vista? I'm interested to see how much the XP fanboys pull off to make XP like 7. There's already a taskbar that works like 7's for XP and explorer skin. I may try it on one of my old boxes. http://www.killertechtips.com/2009/04/26/windows-7 ...
- Kazbaeden, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4I read an article once which had a list of addons that supposedly turned XP into Vista via like 20 addons. The problem was, once you're done adding all those things on, XP is slower than Vista, and you still don't have all the core low-level improvements of Vista.
Now you want to turn XP into Windows 7? So you need another 20 addons, and you're missing ANOTHER set of low level improvements. At that point, why not just use windows 7? - valleyman86, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. I love it! Ive never had huge issues with Vista. Ive seen a view minor performance hick ups but with Windows 7 everything thing seems better. It looks good, runs smooth, boots so fast, and everything is organized right. It doesn't feel like they tried to smash as many features into as they could and meet a deadline. Everything is functional and useful. For example: Wordpad is now useful for simple documents, calculator is easier to use for programming, the taskbar is organised right and task can be moved around manually, gadgets use the whole desktop and the alt+tab shows a preview. These just some of the features of Windows 7 that I love.
- peters1023, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4Vista is much faster in my case. Both to boot up and shut down. Never problems while I'm using it either.
The XP computer I was using was a 3200+ with 2 gb RAM, so hardware should not have been the problem.
x64 Vista SP1 > XP SP 3
But sure go ahead keep digging me down for sharing my experience with VIsta. - aahpandasrun, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4I'm sure Windows 95 can do pretty much everything Windows XP can do too. It's like not upgrading to DVD because a VHS player can still play movies.
- suntzusputnik, on 05/09/2009, -2/+5That's not nice.
- Jeepinator, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3My notepad pops up in less than the blink of an eye. What the ***** is wrong with your computer?
- peters1023, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3I guess you didn't get it LMN8R.
I was implying Vista was superior not the other way around. - Carlix, on 05/09/2009, -1/+4XP can't dx 10
- Kazbaeden, on 05/09/2009, -1/+4Pointing to /. as proof that MS is a joke is a joke. /. has the biggest hardon for hating MS.
- ZippyV, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3What's bloated about Windows 7?
- morphie, on 05/09/2009, -1/+4In your first link, XP wins 3 out of 4 times over vista. So, your point being?
And the links only apply to 3D performance. Something that largely depends on the graphical hardware and the drivers written for it.
What is meant by bad vista performance, is day to day use. The fact that Windows Vista slows down after 6 months of use. The fact that it's scheduler is borked. I turn on my computer and the time it takes before I can do some real work. The fact that if I want to watch a movie, my computer starts doing other things I don't want it to do, resulting in frame drops.
Even Microsoft devs acknowledge the problems. So why won't you? - aahpandasrun, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3Is speed the only thing people care about when it comes to an operating system? I'm sure if you benchmark windows 95, it runs faster than Windows 7 too on modern hardware. It's about features, usability, and stability. Of course Windows 7 won't run as fast as Windows XP, because it's coming 8 years later and has 8 years full of modern features. Most computer users won't care if an advanced photoshop filter which normally takes 30 seconds takes 29.5 seconds in Windows 7.
- Gizza, on 05/11/2009, -0/+3Just tested it then. Windows Key, type 'notepad' enter, pops up before my finger was off the enter key. Is you computer from the 80s?
- Ash568, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3That's generally what you want to happen.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Actually Vista SP2 now did the final optimizations in that regard. It ROCKS.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 05/09/2009, -1/+3What?! Are you STILL running a computer from 1999 or something? With $500 computers having 4 gb of ram and 500+ gb hard drives, it's time you UPGRADED...or at least, buy a Windows 7 PC when it comes out. You'll forget ALL about XP. Trust me.
- Raptor007, on 05/09/2009, -2/+4There's a lot of truth to this, but 7 is going to have a pretty welcome reception:
* less bloat than Vista
* Vista 64-bit drivers are now plentiful
* slightly improved UI
Although I agree that many of the dumb core and UI choices they made in Vista remain in 7. - Raptor007, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2I like Windows 7 okay, but it's still not quite working as well as XP for me. I'm going to be dual-booting for a while, and I'm not sure how soon 7 will become my default option.
- Raptor007, on 05/09/2009, -1/+3XP SP3 > XP SP2 / Vista SP1
I haven't used XP SP2 recently enough to be sure it wasn't as slow as Vista SP1... but I definitely remember a speed boost with SP3. - Jeepinator, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2In terms of the speed of applications, that statement is true. In terms of boot time, not at all.
- hyperspaztik, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2I installed Service Pack 2 on my PC, and my ATI drivers did not like it one bit. I kept getting blue screens every time I tried to play a movie, whether from a site or on DVD. I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal =]
- pmc64, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2i always find it funny when people try to use a skin to make their old os look like a new one.
- Matt88, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2I've gone from XP to Win 7 and I'm loving it - everything is working and Win7 seems a bit snappier than XP.
- Sheethappens, on 05/09/2009, -2/+4One little problem with this - Vista SP1 is NOWHERE near the same performance as XPSP2. NOWHERE near it. Sure it improved things and I like using Vista for various reasons but it pisses me off waiting for it to do anything at all.
Cant wait for Win7 to be out for sale. I will be shoving that on BOTH my Vista using machines so quickly it'll make their hard drives spin! - derek20cali, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2*First fail
- SquareWheel, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2I installed SP2 Beta a few months ago and now, due to an issue where my Windows has made itself not genuine after a power outtage (what?), tech support claims I have to remove SP2. Unfortunately, that didn't work. First attempt stopped Windows from booting, and after some Startup Repair I found SP2 half installed. So I'll just put a word of warning out there about updating to betas. But I happen to love betas, so I'll probably do it again anyway.
- Gizza, on 05/11/2009, -0/+2You tell Windows to show system files and then complain when it shows system files? No wonder Microsoft gets so much flak having to deal with users like you.
- MScrip, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2>> "i always find it funny when people try to use a skin to make their old os look like a new one"
For real.
It's like they forget that there's 8 years worth of new code under Windows 7... it's not just a GUI upgrade.
I'm a little tired of my 2001-era OS... I'm ready for Windows 7. -
