But the Zune's PC software is so broken it's impossible to use. If the Zune had better sync software I would be using one right now.

It has a beautiful screen, it doesnt tie you to iTunes (its some Zune app but oh well... anything but iTunes...) and once it gets hacked, it will most likely allow you to take advantage of the file sharing function and turn your Zune into a consortium of coolness. And now finally, it is cheaper than an iPod! I'm sold.

There are already simple registry hacks to:
1) enable mass storage (think external HD)
2) unlimited sharing via wifi
3) Force the software to convert MP4 / DivX

If you knew anything about marketing, you would know that it's called "branding". "Branding" is of the utmost importance when creating a line of products.

I've owned a Creative Zen AND we have two iPods in the house (one 4g nano and one 5g 30gig). IMO the Zune hardware / interface are much slicker (and easier to operate in a car) than an iPod. The larger display and the click-to-move controls are actually addictive to use. I'm really glad I bought it.. it's one of the best pieces of electronics I've bought in years.
Yes, I do admit that the PC Zune software needs work :) Not for the novice user at this point.. if you have some intermediate computer knowledge the software is more than useable and the few quirks it has are easy to work around until they come out with an update. - Repeater2000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Zune rocks :Arr

I ruled the iPod out fairly early, since the Vision: M and the Zune both had superior screens (Vision: M has 4x the colors, Zune's screen is bigger). Between those two, I eventually decided on the Vision: M because I didn't like the Zune's PC software. I'm extremely pleased with my decision, but I'm sure the Zune and the iPod are both worth the $220-230 they cost now.

It gets bashed because of how ridiculous it is that microsoft copied the ipod almost exactly and somehow there are people out there who believe it can bring down the ipod. They added a slightly larger screen and a useless wireless feature and...oh boy, an FM radio. How can you get excited about a product that has no innovation at all and bash the ipod which gave birth to the Zune? It doesn't make sense to me at all. The Zune isn't a bad player at all, but stop crying about how great it is...it is no ipod killer, it's just another imitator. Microsoft is notorious for just catching up to what other OS and hardware makers have been doing and amazingly people still buy it. Vista is another example...it's not a bad OS but have you used OSX or Linux. Just catching up to the competition is nothing to be excited about.
Furthermore, the iPod does not lock you to the iTunes music store just the iTunes program, but why all the fuss, it's a good program. You have your choice of numerous file formats, about the same number of file types as the Zune. Neither Vista, nor the Zune is not groundbreaking so stop posturing to Mac-heads, we just think you sound retarded.
