- skittlebomb101, on 11/26/2008, -15/+119I'm going to hold off putting these half ass stuff on my Vista computer. I am going to wait for the real thing- Windows 7.
By doing this my experience with the new operating system will be much more pleasing and fresh. - Shivan57, on 11/26/2008, -7/+96Seriously? They had a topic about how to put stuff in the quick launch area AND how to customize the system tray?? These are incredibly old tricks... maybe good for people who don't want to explore the OS they use... but come on. Buried.
- Selkies, on 11/26/2008, -10/+65omg, I can't wait for paint with ribbon...
shake is cool though - bullsfan03, on 11/26/2008, -1/+42CLICK HARDER!!!
- patasenko89, on 11/26/2008, -5/+45Or just get Windows 7 pre-beta and live your life.
- Gauthic, on 11/26/2008, -0/+361. Right click on your taskbar, and uncheck Lock the Taskbar
2. Right click on the draggable handle for your quicklaunch area
3. Go to View->Large Icons
4. Right click on your taskbar, and re-check Lock the Taskbar - floepie, on 11/26/2008, -4/+37The best feature of Windows 7 seems to be that it's smaller. How can I install that?
- Julie188, on 11/26/2008, -4/+34Cool ... here's hoping Windows 7 is really worth the effort.
- Ayavaron, on 11/26/2008, -0/+24Can you give any more information about this kind of specialized defrag? What software do you use to do something like that?
- kronix2, on 11/26/2008, -0/+22Do any Mac zealots remember how utterly ***** OSX 10.0 was?
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -1/+22Aeroshake < Exposé < *****
- getter1, on 11/26/2008, -4/+24Boot times are iffy and their tips offered don't really speed up the actual boot time while windows is at its loading screen.
best way to get fastest boot times is when you initially install windows run a specialized defrag that will move system files to the beginning of the disc, thus giving fast boots. Once my XP machine gets past bios booting its takes only 2 passes of the XP load bar to load to the user log in. So.. about 15-20 seconds... - Sketchcast, on 11/26/2008, -1/+21Me. Sometimes you need to quickly markup a screenshot or add (un)funny text to a picture. If it was useless people wouldn't have gone out of their way to make an OSX clone of it http://paintbrush.sourceforge.net/
- kevdawg, on 11/26/2008, -1/+21I do when I don't want to wait for Photoshop.
- MattB123, on 11/26/2008, -2/+18Enabling Quick Launch is always one of the first things I do on a fresh XP or Vista install. I'm glad to see they aren't just killing it off like I figured they were (because it was disabled by default for so long).
Show Desktop, Firefox, Outlook, Notepad++, Calculator, and Picasa always get added right away. - ePuck, on 11/26/2008, -0/+16Small icons ftw
- staplemaniac, on 11/26/2008, -1/+16BE CAREFUL NOT TO BREAK YOUR MACBOOK AIR!
- staplemaniac, on 11/26/2008, -0/+13In Vista: Windows button + (1, 2, 3, etc) to open items 1, 2, 3 etc on your quick launch bar.
- HonoredMule, on 11/26/2008, -0/+12No it won't, but from the look of this article, you can't really match most of the useful UI features anyway.
- zwaldowski, on 11/26/2008, -1/+13He's full of *****, XP and Vista both do that by default.
- Chirp08, on 11/26/2008, -2/+13There will be many changes but it is still Windows Vista with a bunch of tweaks and fixes. Much like Leopard was essentially Tiger with a bunch of changes. Hopefully Vista works out just like OSX did, the first release sucked, but with each revision it got that much better. Vista is a great platform for the next few years of operating systems without question.
- joe8pack, on 11/26/2008, -0/+11If you alter the graphics so the bar is shorter, it will boot even faster.
- Gizza, on 11/27/2008, -0/+10I can't believe there are people who either didn't know about quick launch or just don't use it. I've been using it for the last 8 or so years and it's pretty much the first thing I turn on any any computer that doesn't have it enabled.
- RedSaint, on 11/27/2008, -0/+10My jaw hit the floor when I read about the quick launch thing. That was introduced in Windows 95, wasn't it?
- jakem1, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8Perhaps this explains why you were able to play Crysis:

- kronix2, on 11/26/2008, -4/+11Goddamn ignorant Apple fanboys.
10.1 was just a service pack for 10.0, designed to bring OSX up to a usable state due to how much of a disaster 10.0 was. Apple gave 10.1 away for free. 10.6 is just a service pack for 10.5, yet Apple will be charging for it.
Microsoft gave every Vista user the Windows Server 2008 kernel for free in SP1. Microsoft gave away XP SP2 for free, a service pack which was as big in scope as an OSX point release. - ePuck, on 11/26/2008, -0/+7Ya it'll work with 1 gig of ram they didn't say it would be fast...
- dotMH, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8It says it right in the title.
- se7envii, on 11/26/2008, -0/+7Another neat piece of software is Taskix. It adds middle click functionality to tasks in the task bar to close them and also the ability to reorder items in it: http://taskix.robustit.com/
- litkaj, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8@kevdawg,
Try Paint.NET - Atsumori, on 11/26/2008, -4/+10I'm running Windows 7 now and I love it, and it is different. Never downgrading. thumbs up for W7
- eatasandwich, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6Aren't we beyond this kind of comment yet?
Lets just assume that someone is going to say this. Just put it in the footer of digg's front page or something, next to a picture of an geeky guy with knives in his eyes. Honestly, that guy who says, "smile!...it may never happen!" when you're pissed off?...you're the new version of him. - ryleyleckie, on 11/26/2008, -5/+11you remind me of a douche
- MicrosoftAccess, on 11/26/2008, -0/+6It acutally is pretty stable. I have been testing it out on my home computer and works quite well. No crashes or blue screens yet. Even installed games on it.
- metaliq, on 11/26/2008, -4/+10Aeroshake is the *****.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -4/+10The IT world just called; you're fired for failing to evolve with your chosen industry.
- 4321234, on 11/26/2008, -1/+7Pre-beta? Would that be anything like alpha?
- EvilCan, on 11/26/2008, -4/+10You're the type of person who would say that about anything Microsoft does, so why comment?
- HonoredMule, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Doesn't Compiz already have something like that in a non-default plugin? Even if not, I bet you could write custom rules to resize and reposition active windows to preset arrangements on the fly.
- ePuck, on 11/26/2008, -3/+8Quicklaunch is a Windows7 best feature? I am disappointed.
You can do all this stuff with windowsXP, except for shake, which is useless if you know hotkeys... windows+d - MavRevMatt, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5Shake is a gimmick, just like the new iPod Nano's shake to shuffle feature.
- Rowwen, on 11/26/2008, -2/+7Minimalist.
- Sketchcast, on 11/26/2008, -2/+7Is ignorance truly as blissful as they say?
- HonoredMule, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Haha, "go outside." I'm a Linux user, but I'm not that deluded. I think we know ourselves better than that at least.
- SexyFarts, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4I won't say Windows is superior because there are many reasons to move to Linux but I'm just way too lazy to learn something new. Sorry, I've spent the past 10 years learning the ins and outs of Windows and Mac and you know what? I honestly can say I just don't mind them enough for me to also learn Linux. I just don't see the market changing that drastically in the foreseeable future that I would just HAVE to learn Linux to get a job. I'll make my kids learn it but it's just not priority to me.
- DeFex, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4It wont run on reasonably priced computers that can run 3d studio max and 64 bit adobe CS4.
- infiniphunk, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4nice job, what KDE theme is that?
- DeFex, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4but i want fisher price big icons NOW not unobtrusive compact quick launch bar :(
- jamesmcm, on 11/26/2008, -1/+5I play games in WINE and watch movies in VLC. It works fine really.
