- dmason, on 06/24/2008, -4/+76I have a feeling Microsoft would be a lot better off without Steve Ballmer.
- crazysamz, on 06/24/2008, -7/+49Oh yeah, Microsoft, the ***** company he started, is going to be better off without him???
And WTF is this guy, look at what he's claiming-
"If Jobs is still running Apple at year end, I'll be shocked."
and
"Vista, the latest version of Windows, has been such a disastrous technical flop that Microsofties themselves have coined a new word for it: "Vistaster." "
WTF, this guy just made up "VISASTER!", and Jobs isn't in a coma, it's not like he threw up during one of his keynotes and had to be taken to a hospital or something, the guy is just looking a little thin.
And wtf is this-
"I think Microsoft will play defense from here on out. Its army of MBAs will milk the monstrous franchise around Windows and Office for all it's worth and try to cushion its decline and create a soft landing. "
Oh, as if Microsoft hasn't been trying to find some other new business models, like the online services market with windows live, the Media market with windows media center and Zune, and the entertainment market with Xbox games and Games for windows (Games have been on windows since forever, I know).
Needless to say, I think this guy's an idiot. - DaMacGamer, on 06/24/2008, -5/+27Microsoft loosing Gates would not be like Apple loosing Steve Jobs, but I think he's done a lot for the company.
- bumcheekcity, on 06/24/2008, -4/+23If we're honest with ourselves, Microsoft are doing OK, aren't they?
- dmason, on 06/24/2008, -1/+19I know he's at least re-arranged his office.

- Ravatar, on 06/24/2008, -2/+12Uh.. Windows Server 2003 (Especially after R2)?
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/web_server_surve ...
Visual Studio 2003/2005/2008 - The best line of IDEs to come out for any platform or language, IMO.
Office 2003 - The de-facto office productivity suite.
.Net Framework & C#/Vb.net - Open standards, platform independence, and some of the best languages to come out in some time.
SQL Server 2005 - Finely-tuned permissions, scales like a beast, reporting services are ace.
Windows Server 2008 is going to be a remarkable success once people realize Windows Server 2008 + Vista work very well with each other.
Take off the rose-colored glasses, Microsoft has been creating some great products in areas where they aren't dominating the market, and some where they are. - greatgatsbyII, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9Way to quote the article.
- crazysamz, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9CITE THE REFERANCE?? WTF r u talking about, I'm talking ABOUT THE ARTICLE. THE QUOTES. FROM THE ARTICLE!? RTFA!
- mrmorris, on 06/24/2008, -4/+12Naaah, the reason for Microsoft's problems has more to do with that monkey CEO to Steve Balmer. Microsoft could embrace open source, literally kill Java if they wanted to but I don't think they have the vision to move on from their legacy business model.
- MrARPA, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7Is "cloud" computing really the future, or just the latest buzzword ? I thought the reader comment by PROSE976 was fairly realistic in stating that we are reaching a point of diminishing returns with a more mature computing market and fewer developmental surprises around the corner.
- grumpyrain, on 06/24/2008, -0/+7Agreed, except I would mention Office 2007 instead. 2003 was a minor update on Office XP (I had both). Office 2007 is remarkably better.
- hapax, on 06/24/2008, -2/+8It's actually to Bill's credit that he's established MS well enough to the point that MS will not miss him as much as Apple would miss Steve Jobs.
- Myztry, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6I agree. Microsoft is clearly in a worse position.
But on the other hand, computing is better off without him. Gates was way too good at holding others back.
Shouldn't take Ballmer too long to run the boat into the rocks since Captain Gates jumped ship.
Would've been nice to see Gates go down with the ship like a real man. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 06/24/2008, -1/+7They've got over 50,000 developers. They employ more developers than any other company.
- bytock, on 06/24/2008, -9/+14i will miss bill :( . He's a good man that changed our world as we know it. What they need is Ballmer out, Gates retiring wont make any difference in the company. Ballmer has just made some bad decisions and business ventures.
- MrARPA, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5As many have commented, Steve looked pretty gaunt at the WWDC; hope it doesn't turn out to be bad news.
- estvir, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Isn't Gates also onboard with the whole 'cloud' thing? Just maybe a little more entwined with his fabled integrated data (I won't say the forbidden word) idea?
As you've pointed out, MS has a lot of good people still to steer MS and/or to put in quality work (Ozzie, Sinofsky, Larson-green, etc).
Maybe the term 'Ozziesoft' will finally take off when people actually read about MS outside of sensationalist stories on sites like Digg. ;) - Ravatar, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Well I was referring to 2002/2003 as a single unit, as I agree it was basically a minor refresh.
I'm still warming up to 2007 but I agree in that it will likely be the new de-facto standard in short order. - Elranzer, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Apple did lose Steve Jobs for a while (see the early-to-mid 1990s) and look what happened. On the plus side, they did come up with the Newton...
- Gman1223, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4@jonathandyerjonathandyer
If 'you're' going to comment, please use correct grammar, otherwise you might look like an idiot.
Congratulations, you look like an idiot. - timusca, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Nobody? Okay...
DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS!!! - gcnaddict, on 06/24/2008, -2/+6I should probably explain who the two people are (for those that don't know).
Craig Mundie is taking half of Bill's job by leading Research and Design at Microsoft.
Ray Ozzie, on the other hand, is taking the other half of Bill's job; he's the Chief Software Architect. I don't know where Craig came from, but Ray is actually a familiar name to a number of people. He was with Lotus in the early days and is best known for creating Lotus Notes (while he was away from Lotus). He got pulled into Microsoft when Ballmer decided to pick up Groove Networks, which is another one of Ray's brainchildren. - 1of42, on 06/24/2008, -1/+5I'm not a big fan of MS, but having family members who have worked with the Gates Foundation on a number of public health-related grants to do with Africa, I have enormous and deep respect for what he has done with his money. While the seething masses on Digg bitch and moan about how MS is ruthless, or how Windows is bloated, or whatever, Gates is putting money where it is truly needed. Why don't we all stop complaining about him and start pushing for other members of the super-rich elite to follow his lead?
- idontlikeyou2, on 06/24/2008, -4/+8Lets start with Ballmer and move on from there
- EntropyFan, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4It depends on how you look at it.
MS would be better off without Gates if it wasn't for Ballmer being the next in line.
Steve is not a bad businessman, but I really don't think his style is what MS needs. - gcnaddict, on 06/24/2008, -7/+11Gates is smart. The problem is that he's stuck in an old world that doesn't focus on cloud computing.
Thankfully, that's where Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie come in. These two are smart and know how to survive on the internet. - sukosaki, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4I would agree, but it's a hard one because after watching his biography, you can see how his attitude, whether the same now as it was then I dont know, would get him in trouble or keep his company behind the times..
- starmanjones, on 06/24/2008, -3/+6i'm not a fan of microsoft. balmer is a guy thats hard to like. gates is hard to not like. microsoft was never about quality or users its always been foremost about money. the only reason windows got where it is... or was.... is arm twisting licensing. it was bound to happen that one day everyone looked around and said, "we been had." thats microsofts problem. if it was some other product it would be getting hit with product liability suits by the ton. i think thats whats happening minus the law suits. windows users caught on. things were right for linux and os x. microsoft has given up on security for windows. they say they can't do it.
balmer is presiding over the decline of microsoft and thats a drag for him. i don't think anyone... gates included could stop it. they have an outdated operating system that full of holes they can't plug. linux and os x are simply modern to windows end-of-life... probably never technically as good os. he has no chance.
microsoft can't catch up with windows. it needs a new os that meets modern standards. they haven't had good luck just getting windows out the door much less build a new os at the same time. much much less less less deal with the problem that windows is just old and a mess. os x and linux are a generation ahead right now. they will turn out several more new versions of next gen while microsoft gets one decrepit windows version out the door.
balmer needs to generate some quick good will. he needs to put windows xp in the public domain. let gamers have it. then pull back and make office and all the rest state of the art. put all the os resources in bulding a new windows from the ground up. it might be a better idea to do what apple did and use open source to cut development time.
balmer know that and he saves microsoft and proves he can do more than sweat buckets and scream obnoxious... balmerizms. my guess is that he will deny that windows is decrepit and try to force it on people and manufacturers in the same way they always did. but they been busted. it was a nice run. punt. - bffoley, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3I think Microsoft would be much better off without Gates AND Ballmer. I think their biggest flaw as a company is their need to absolutely smash anything that might slightly compete with them. Most big businesses hate competition but Microsoft takes it a bit too far, and they have a bad reputation for it that even laymen know about. While I think MS will be the dominant company in most of the arenas they fight in for a long time, things like OpenOffice, Linux, Java, Firefox, PS3/Wii, etc are not going to go away. Maybe if they get fresh blood in the leadership, the company can start focusing on being the best product in their field, not the only product.
- bffoley, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Ehhhh, I think there was a time where Microsoft could have squashed Java, but that time has long passed. It's used in way too many places now.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Agreed. Not to mention who's gonna be the number one on the company now: Steve "Developers, Developers, Developers" Ballmer. Seriously, Microsoft should've known better, they need a complete facelift in what CEOs is concerned, Ballmer is just too mob like for a company that doesn't need too much help in portraying itself as a criminal organization...
- aserer511, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3I doubt he was contributing that much in his later years at the company for his leaving to make a tangible impact, either way
- mikesgroove, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3I agree that Microsoft is not going to lose much momentum when Gates steps aside. M$ is like a many-headed hydra that to me is built to survive the severing of a head. I don;t agree with author's statement that Apple will lose Steve Jobs to retirement by this year's end. I think Steve-O has several more years left in him...
- cultist667, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3Look at what happened to wal mart without Walton. He must be rolling in his grave.
- oishiitoriniku, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3The man is one of the world's biggest philanthropists.
Yes, I'm sure the world would be better of without him.... - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -3/+5Yes but for each developer, there's 3 lawyers.
- Elranzer, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3Rich?
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Bill Gates revolutionized the world and now making it a better place with his philanthropy. Before you judge him make sure you look at yourself first, ask what you've done, and if it doesn't compare to 0.000001% of what Bill Gates has done just shut up and move on.
- 1of42, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2What the ***** are you on about? H-1B Visa holders largely get paid similar salaries to American workers. There's no such thing as "cheap slave labor" for Microsoft workers, unless we're talking about the janitors or something here.
- jayscot, on 06/24/2008, -2/+4MS will soar if they can find a replacement for Steve Ballmer. He seems to lack basic sense about what users want or need.
- timusca, on 06/24/2008, -3/+4I disagree... that means the CEO hasn't been the brains behind anything. Its the CEO's job to run the company and oversee everything it puts out and then find a suitable replacement for his retirement.
Gates did neither. - ijwhelan, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1Your sarcasm = Fail.
- ren1999, on 06/24/2008, -1/+2Gates was strict but better at the job than Ballmer. Steve Ballmer should be fired.
- Kwipper, on 06/24/2008, -1/+2It might be, but I know for a fact that MS would definitely be better off without Steve Ballmer.
- estvir, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1Can people please stop submitting and Digging these ridiculous Forbes stories, it's obvious they're jokes as far as journalism is concerned and all they seem to worry about is ad revenue from as many pages as they can create.
Remember kids, according to Forbes Europe is a single country! And who cares about needing editors! -
