- krystalo, on 09/29/2009, -9/+84I'll admit I'm interested in this, even if it's from Microsoft. Free is free!
- CySailor, on 09/29/2009, -7/+61Count down till EU lawsuit begining.... now.
- diskserious, on 09/29/2009, -2/+48Norton and McAfee = resource hogs. Microsoft Security Essentials? Uses less system resources then AVG free. I have been very impressed. Best of all, no nagging me with "are you sure you don't want PRO protection for just $49.95 a year?" No thanks, I don't need an additional spam filter AVG.
- nardologix, on 09/30/2009, -4/+39When people brought their infected PC's to the computer shop I worked at this summer, they usually had norton which claimed that everything was fine. We'd remove it using norton removal tool and put on MsSE and it would find all the viruses that norton missed.
Why pay for norton when you can get an anti-virus that works and is free. - BluesFan, on 09/30/2009, -1/+33I got rid off AVG/AdAware and hope this is a good replacement...so far so good.
- davidlyness, on 09/29/2009, -1/+30Who said that Microsoft would be bundling this with Windows? The EU courts got upset with Microsoft for including Internet Explorer as part of the default Windows package - this is an optional download for anyone who is interested.
For now, at least. - RoroCo, on 09/30/2009, -7/+36And nobody is going to help you pay to reverse that lobotomy that Apple gave you.
- wem003, on 09/30/2009, -1/+28Wow this is lightweight. I am impressed - good job Microsoft...
- gaymathman, on 09/30/2009, -2/+25Don't forget that MSE is insanely fast and barely uses any memory.
- abehammy111, on 09/30/2009, -4/+26microsoft's been on a rolll lately. First they come out with the Zune HD which has been very well received and a nicer design than the ipod's design, then the tablet gets leaked out which looks and sounds interesting, and now they've coming out with a security software that's reportedly impressive (it's security, and we all know windows isn't very secure), and people are incredibly excited about Windows 7. It's like they're the opposite company.
- one1plus1one, on 09/30/2009, -4/+25US Corps should just get it over with, and stop servicing the EU, and let Europe figure out how to find drivers for Ubuntu.
- JYoungest1, on 09/30/2009, -3/+20Ive been using Live One Care for about 3 years now. If its anything like this I am going to jump on it once I upgrade to 7. It integrates perfectly with the OS.
- schoate09, on 09/30/2009, -3/+18Vista and 7 are FAR less "virus prone". All oses are equally vulnerable to trojans when the user gives them explicit root permission.
Don't flatter yourself over OS X's "UNIX" underpinnings. - Yage2006, on 09/30/2009, -1/+15About time.
Take that norton, mcaffe and the rest of you lot. - Subduction, on 09/30/2009, -3/+16That, in terms of complexity, is like saying "gosh, I don't know why we can't just make all cars run on hydrogen from now on. For places that don't have hydrogen we can just have a bolt-on thing that lets them run gas."
- DigitalisAkujin, on 09/30/2009, -1/+14Haha yea. Only careless or ignorant people need virus scan (99.9% of users).
- inactive, on 09/30/2009, -2/+14I've been using the beta for a few months now in 7, so far so good, and it got a pretty good review in pcworld:
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/product/290838/revi ... - Hacktivist, on 09/30/2009, -2/+14Ditto for me in the various Windows.
Thanks common sense. - IllBeBack, on 09/30/2009, -0/+12I got a UAC prompt when I started the installation. This is basically the prompt from the system requesting administrative privileges.
So, Windows is doing what you suggested. - lazlonger, on 09/30/2009, -2/+14Just installed it on my freshly installed 7-RC1 desktop. was quick and easy, tucked itself into the task bar. seems just about perfect, as in i've already forgotten it.
- KloroFormd, on 09/30/2009, -0/+10Set the security permissions of your OS to block avnotify.exe from executing. Problem solved.
- stockjones, on 09/30/2009, -0/+10Wow and its free. This gonna freak out anti virus software makers everywhere. Even freebes like AVG cant really come close to the signature updates of MS I mean come on.
- IllBeBack, on 09/30/2009, -3/+13Holy crap, what sort of irresponsible actions are you taking in order to become infected with 5 viruses?
Perhaps you should consider no longer using computers. - cyssero, on 09/30/2009, -0/+10I wish this was bundled with Windows. Why shouldn't it be? Oh, because Symantec, McAfee and countless others would scream bloody murder.
Now MS have a product that is clean, unbloated, easy to use and best of all - free. And it's Symantec with their toolbars and desktop gadgets making you paranoid about only having 289 days left on the subscription before it expires! Better renew now!
Of course, there's plenty of hyperbole here. But Security Essentials is great, and definitely worth a shot (I mean, it's 4MB and takes about 30 seconds to install, why not?). - gaymathman, on 09/30/2009, -1/+10I see no way Brussels can argue that this is in any way anticompetitive. People must go out of their way to download it. Their previous rulings were unfair in that they weren't applied to Apple, but they did have logic behind them (WMP and IE ship with Windows, reduce competition, but iTunes and Safari ship with OS X...)
- gaymathman, on 09/30/2009, -3/+12It fixes no holes; it recognizes and removes malicious files.
- dreamsburnred, on 09/30/2009, -0/+9Its such a nice product, thankfully its free. Thanks Microsoft :).
- ptFoe, on 09/30/2009, -5/+13not sure why you are getting dugg down
- toleshei, on 09/30/2009, -1/+8Well, it is an optional download. I could see maybe if it was bundled with windows...
Of course the EU might see it differently. - dagamer34, on 09/30/2009, -2/+8Sooner or later, the EU is going to fine Microsoft for including "awesomeness" with Windows 7. It'll be fun to watch.
- lazlonger, on 09/30/2009, -4/+10"It integrates perfectly with the OS."
yeah but don't say that out loud. it upsets some people. - phpchris, on 09/30/2009, -0/+6I love the win7 system tray for exactly this reason, hiding icons by default! makes the taskbar much nicer to look at.
- Macintoshreader, on 09/30/2009, -3/+9/Drinks kool-aid.
- Tenoq, on 09/30/2009, -1/+6Yeah, that sounds like a good move. I imagine Microsoft would love to cut out the revenue of a billion Europeans buying Windows and Office products. I mean, surely it won't cost them as much as these lawsuits.... right?
/s - BluesFan, on 09/30/2009, -0/+4 I will say that it seems to use less resources and I haven't caught any viruses so I guess AVG got them all before I switched....of course maybe both AVG and Security Essentials missed one:(
Honestly though so far I would recommend it over AVG/AdAware because.
1.It is two programs in one.
2.uses less resources
3.MS will most likely do a good job at supporting it. - Acqua206, on 09/30/2009, -1/+5I installed Avira on my Vaio laptop. Don't ask me why but I started blue screening on resumption from standby right after. Uninstalled it and the problem went away. I went back to Avast but didn't like the way they were going (popups), so MSE it is.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 09/30/2009, -0/+4MSE owns it.
- Litespeed, on 09/30/2009, -0/+4Yes, this supersedes Windows Defender. It is disabled when MSSE is installed.
- hairysandwich, on 09/30/2009, -1/+5I'm extremely interested in this. I used Kaspersky which is great until your subscription runs out, then kaspersky will nag you like crazy. "Did you know your subscription ran out? You're not protected! Renew now!" Yeah ***** with the constant nagging how could I possibly forget!! So I'm only too happy to install this.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 09/30/2009, -1/+4And every other company in the market can bundle security software with it's operating system.
- TheInformer, on 09/30/2009, -3/+6Avira Antivir is my choice for antivirus - free and top rated! Only negative is that once a day a large ad appears. One click and it disappears.
- jtechs, on 09/30/2009, -0/+3i just removed NOD32 from one of our chinese staff's personal computer. I replaced it with this and it found 8 virus/spyware..
Thanks MS - gaymathman, on 09/30/2009, -4/+7I actually thought that MSE was broken at one point; I was on the NYTimes website and a MSE window with a red computer screen popped up saying that a malicious file was detected in Opera's cache. Confused, I looked around, and saw "freevirusscannerxp" or some such ***** that loaded in a background tab. The thing is, I could have sworn that the realtime scanner was off; I must have closed the window and not clicked apply or something. MSE is so lightweight that I didn't notice it was running at all.
- ChinezePanda, on 09/30/2009, -1/+4I got to hand it to em....
this is *****.
And I got my 3 orders for Windows 7 purchased and ready to go.
That student deal was flippin suweet. - geoken, on 09/30/2009, -0/+3Unfortunately if your a noob no AV app can protect your credit card.
- MistrBrownstone, on 09/30/2009, -0/+3i was lucky to get the beta first day before it reached its download limit. impressed so far.
- Hortnon, on 10/01/2009, -1/+3Fail
- Iwantawii, on 09/30/2009, -1/+3Would you recommend MSE over AVG/AdAware? I will be reformatting 5 or 6 company machines with W7 in the coming months, and would consider moving to the MSE camp if I was convinced it was > or == the latter.
- Hortnon, on 09/30/2009, -2/+4Where have you been? Vista moved to the lower user permissions model when it came out...several years ago.
- kyxi, on 09/30/2009, -0/+2Review of the first beta from remove-malware.com, tests MSE against real malware:
