- MarkusX, on 07/31/2008, -3/+282Unless Microsoft is coming with another new OS that forces/persuades Newbies to use IE, they will continue to decline.
I think Firefox finally has the better reputation.
There are just so many people, who don't know how to use a browser, that doesn't come pre-installed with the OS (i.e. my wife) and so many people who are afraid of any change.
Otherwise we would see Firefox dominating the statistics already, I'm sure. - ScrewedThePooch, on 08/01/2008, -2/+260I use IE.... to download Firefox when i reformat.
- BobMysterioso, on 08/01/2008, -1/+95Do you really think the average person goes to w3schools? What you are missing is your population segment is skewed heavily towards tech. This is, in no way, a cross section of everyone. So yea, it would seem w3schools has about 40% FF usage, but as stated that is skewed higher, real world % is more like 20%.
And at 20% that is pretty darn impressive. - inactive, on 08/01/2008, -3/+91in Hungary, firefox became the leading browser this month
Firefox 48.9%
Internet Explorer 46.8%
Opera 3.4%
By Version
Firefox 2 35.9%
Internet Explorer 6 23.6%
Internet Explorer 7 23,2%
Firefox 3 11.1% - rdsubhas, on 07/31/2008, -14/+101Go firebaby go...
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -6/+78Use TACKLE Firefox! Now use QUICK ATTACK!
- CharlesSaint, on 08/01/2008, -3/+69Typing this comment while on the phone with someone who is trying to get by the authentication page to access our Outlook Web Access (non-corporate hardware) and IE7 is screwing up for them.
Clear Cache and restart browser. Fail. Check configuration settings and try again. Fail. Restart computer (she did a hard restart before I could catch her b/c she didn't know how to restart her computer normally). Fail. Go to http://www.getfirefox.com , download, and install. Success! - ieee, on 08/01/2008, -4/+6920% of the market share in the end user arena. Girls and Boys, open source software is now on the map!
- mrbuerger, on 08/01/2008, -2/+59IE7 is useful to download Firefox.
It's the first and the only one thing I do with IE7 after formating... And it's safety... I hope... - trmanco, on 08/01/2008, -1/+55Thumbs up for Firefox and Mozilla, they have done and are doing a great job :)
- silverzone, on 08/01/2008, -7/+60Now let's just get that number higher!
- FUR10N, on 08/01/2008, -5/+42so does that mean that 70% of internet users are retarded
- JoshChan, on 08/01/2008, -2/+38I think the 70% share of IE is just due to corporate uses and the rest of the mass who are not quite computer literate. Almost every causal user I have come across is all using firefox. Anyone who is using IE would be immediately viewed as "internet outsider". Firefox is on a roll and unless major changes occur, IE is not going to stay....
- afx1, on 08/01/2008, -0/+35i've memorized the bytes for the installer and just punch them into an empty file
- lesleye, on 07/31/2008, -8/+42love ya firefox!
- mcneely11, on 08/01/2008, -1/+34IE counters with Version 7! It's not very effective.....
- flashboy131, on 08/01/2008, -5/+37the way things went with Vista that gives Firefox another 5 years to gain.
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -0/+31I use a mouse on a wheel attached to a dynamo to generate a small electrical current that powers a magnetic head which I use to manually inscribe the pits that make up the data, onto the raw hard disk platter.
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -1/+29come on, surely some of them are retarded.
- djmphoto, on 08/01/2008, -2/+30Haven't used IE for years, at least not at home, at work I'm stuck with it, but at home I only use IE on accident.
- AntBing, on 08/01/2008, -4/+31Thats cuz the Fox rocks!
- johnomaz, on 08/01/2008, -4/+28No, it means 20% of the internet users can tell the difference, the 70% you speak of just dont' give a *****. Big deal, they check their e-mail and casually surf the net.
- Akbad, on 08/01/2008, -4/+27People are learning more about browsers and realizing they have a CHOICE. Internet Explorer is experiencing it's last few months of being on top. Besides... IE SUCKS!
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -1/+23telnet is what real gangsta use.
- hamobu, on 08/01/2008, -1/+21Open source has been on the map for long time. Only open source can compete With Microsoft. All non-Microsoft software companies are either niche companies (like Adobe) or not true software companies (like Apple)
- PFS1, on 08/01/2008, -0/+19The site is being visited by people who have a FAR greater interest in the nuts and bolts of the web and therefore are more likely to be using a proper browser.
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -3/+22And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced. But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird. The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire and thunder upon them. For the beast had been reborn with its strength renewed, and the followers of Mammon cowered in horror.
- gritta, on 08/01/2008, -0/+19That is 40% of visitors to w3schools.com using FF:
"Anyway, our data, collected from W3Schools' log-files, over a five year period, clearly shows the long and medium-term trends." - HorseloverFat8, on 08/01/2008, -0/+18It's spelt *****.
- latrosicarius, on 08/01/2008, -0/+17Use Telnet? No. Purposfully use their default page (MSN) to search for mozilla.org or getfirefox.com
just so they can see -- to piss them off. Then never return to MSN or use IE - hamobu, on 08/01/2008, -4/+20I think we can say that Microsoft browser monopoly is dead. Microsoft still has majority market share, but there is a real competition now. Microsoft also lost the ability to dictate web standards.
- kmolnar, on 08/01/2008, -1/+17Telnet would be real gangsta, I agree, but Microsoft's cheesy telnet app does not support standard input redirection, so it's unfortunately not so simple. Ideally, you'd just be able to run...
:: (file "getff3.txt" containing "GET /?product=firefox-3.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US HTTP/1.1" + [CR LF CR LF])
%> type getff3.txt | telnet download.mozilla.org 80 > firefox-3.0.1-install.exe
...but this will not work as intended, sadly. Although ... this might:
%> telnet download.mozilla.org 80 > firefox-3.0.1-install.exe
GET /?product=firefox-3.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US HTTP/1.1
...but either way you'd have to strip the HTTP headers and status line off the beginning of the resulting file, and Windows doesn't come with a hex editor... and I think Notepad would mangle it. - taseedorf, on 08/01/2008, -4/+20Firefox is making AMAZING strides. I've actually come across normal pc users using Firefox, and 3 years ago, no one was using it except computerphiles. If MS didn't ship its OS with the operating system, no one would use it. If they had to go download either IE or Firefox, most would choose Firefox. It's the "non computer generation" people using IE still...which sadly makes up much of the business world and many home users.
- seldon452, on 08/01/2008, -1/+16A lot of people don't use firefox becuase they think that Internet Explorer is, in fact, THE INTERNET.
- themastersb, on 08/01/2008, -0/+15This website of yours.... is it by any chance a blog?
- palewook, on 08/01/2008, -4/+19death to IE!
- alperea, on 08/01/2008, -5/+20I guess they're hungary for some fire fox!
- EtherGnat, on 08/01/2008, -2/+17"Open Source Software helps Microsoft (By stopping people pirating its products!)"
How does that help Microsoft? Either way Microsoft doesn't get the sale. If anything pirating software is better for Microsoft compared to using open source, because it makes you more likely to buy/use their products in the future.
Anti-piracy efforts only help an organization if it causes you to buy the product, not use something else. - svivian, on 08/01/2008, -1/+15What criteria could you possibly be using to rate Opera=IE? Opera is immensely faster, more secure and more customisable.
- HorseloverFat8, on 08/01/2008, -0/+14Always come prepared with the Fox on a USB key when you need to reformat.
- ieee, on 08/01/2008, -0/+12I disagree. If only geeks know about open source software it is niche curiosity.
If a piece of open source software hits double digit market share in a market of end users, ordinary people who don't care about tech details or tech philosophy, then you can say it has arrived.
Firefox has arrived.
I think if OO developers stop insisting that OO uses Java/be slow/clunky by default that OO might be the next piece of oss to break through
The number 3 candidate might be Ubuntu if it and microsoft keep going down their current paths - inactive, on 08/01/2008, -3/+14I'm a Safari user myself, but I am trilled to see IE lose yet more market share! Come on Mozilla!
- 1807, on 08/01/2008, -16/+27We don't need no water let the mother F*ckers burn!
- novemberdobby, on 08/01/2008, -1/+12Did you, like, start Opera? or did you just use the icons for comparison?
- BlueSkyfish, on 08/01/2008, -1/+12Opera is miles ahead of IE. I'd even rank it above Firefox in terms of speed, page rendering, and usability. Of course, I still use Firefox for the add-ons.
- WoollyMittens, on 08/01/2008, -0/+10Both Adobe and Microsoft profit immensely from piracy. The benefit may be indirect, but it's better to have someone stealing your product and getting stuck on it, then to give them a chance of discovering alternatives.
- boomybx, on 08/01/2008, -23/+33I thought Firefox had almost 40% : http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.a ...
What am I missing there ? - TheMarvel, on 08/01/2008, -4/+14I want my nostalgic Netscape Navigator back... oh how I miss thee. But I guess it now lives on in Firefox.
- fLUx1337, on 08/01/2008, -1/+11If MS didn't ship its OS with the operating system - a lot of people around the world would be staring at BIOS screens...
