- zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -9/+50if it's not FF friendly, it doesn't get my digg
- TheSchwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27YES! now I know exactly when to start off on Oregon Trail!!
If only the site suggested how many oxen I need. - drtyfrnk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27now if it only checked the traffic as well...
- linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22dugg, but site is not fully FF friendly
Read: "Use IE to be able to drag the map." - briankealer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Apparently not too "digg friendly" either. Site is down already.
- ShooterMcGavin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You have died of dysentery.
- cklol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Who would make a site that isn't these days? Wow.
- indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9too much and your wagon will sink at the river. that always got me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Funny thing is, I can drag the map in Firefox...
- boxc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6instant error in safari
- swordedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Make that VERY slow. I might be able to drive there in the time it takes to tell me what time to leave.
- QuackQuack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I believe you mean the Sierra Nevada.
- indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that only works for metropolitan areas....
- leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3duggmirror looks like the internet threw up onto your screen - I'd recommend not bothering :o
Bookmarked for when it recovers!
seems to be a poorly coded site though. - superfrodies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3best thing to do is, if you can, sleep during the day as much as possible and leave around 7pm, or after rush hour traffic has died down, and drive straight through the night. No traffic, no cops. Try to plan it so you don't hit major cities at morning rush hour.

What a crazy perspective.
Should every single website should cater to the entire world? Would Trippish be smart in designing this website to accommodate all the countries in the world? Can't you see the fault of your logic? Should Rolls Royce open up a new dealership in Ethiopia to stop their products from becoming western-centric? Many people in this world (and even some in the US) actually have no concept or interest whatsoever of a road trip, or even of owning cars. But, according to your logic, why leave them out of the fun of using the internet (if they have a computer, or access) to plot out an imaginary road trip (for a car that they don't have), right? Sheesh. - Woknblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, I could not possibly agree less. I fail to see where a post about an interesting website (to some, not me) that has a feature list that excludes non-North Americans from using it fully is not suitable for Digg. You comments smack of simple jealousy. Not only that, but your statements "last time i checked, 'digg' wasn't an exclusive club for obese intellectually devoid americans,.." and "god i hate americans." are way out of line.
---and I am the arsehole? - Tyorant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great, now everyone's going to be leaving at the same time and we'll have a load of traffic!
- EclipseEmpire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gets stuck at checking weather.... no digg
- ponyfreak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3too bad this wasn't around before the Donner party decided to cross the rocky mountains. weather just isn't a huge factor in my climate controlled car.
- swordedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is slow
- fweepa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1man, i was gonna digg it. planning a 2100 mile road trip come may and this would have been helpful.
alas, i will stick with google maps. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just for fun, I asked it to tell me how long it would take to get from Virginia (where I live now) to Ft Lauderdale, Florida (where I greew up...um...if anyone ever really grows up in Florida). It accurately showed the number of miles and approximate time to get there at a given rate of speed. But where it lacked was some of the details. The miles traveled at certain points got stuck as did the time to arrive at checkpoints along the way.
I've read in the comments that it doesn't seem to like any browser buy IE, which oddly enough I was using here at work. The maps and weather along the route worked nicely, though the route once in Lauderdale seemed to me to be an odd choice. Needs some work, but not a bad effort. Hopefully it will get better. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@leap,
Yeah I noticed that and it did seem weird, though trying to guage time and distance based on actual local speed limits would be a nightmare to try and figure out - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You start out with a good point, and then shoot yourself in the foot with "Micro$loth".
- brianboyko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually, I completed a long road trip moving to Texas for my job at www.networkperformancedaily.com - I decided to leave at 2am, drive all night, and sleep during the day. This was for two reasons. First, I was so excited I couldn't sleep. Second, traffic, especially passing through major cities like Little Rock and Dallas, was much less and I made very good time.
- indraneel24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ah yes, topographical map pornography. one section of kansas looks like boobs!
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trippy
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1EYE would dig if I could get thru...
- zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A site like this should be able to withstand a digg effect...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice. It says I need to leave at 12:32 AM.
I'm afraid the AI on this thing might some day take over the world! - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I deprived? I have never played the Oregon Trail...
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works in FF fine for me. I think the bandwidth has a large effect on dragging.
- fredrated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, one of these days software will be so good at predicting everything about a trip that you won't have to leave. It will even generate the pictures.
- sluggoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What time do you have to leave on your trip to get a new server?
- briangig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to current forecasts, and in order to minimize precipitations and extreme temperatures during your journey we recommend leaving on
undefined
Do you want to see the trip info for that date?
if this was ALOT faster, and had a better UI...it would be great. but I still dugg it for actually making something that (kinda) works.. - nevesis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good idea but poorly implemented.
Doesn't play well with Firefox.
Only shows me weather at a handful of cities on my route, sometimes none but start/end!
Doesn't show construction information.
meh. i'm not impressed, yet. - johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1>Trippish is a free service that gives you driving directions with weather forecasts along the route. Trippish not only tells you what the weather is likely to be during your drive, but also allows you to determine the best time to leave based on current forecasts....IN NORTH AMERICA.
there are other countries in the world you know. Buried due to rampant US-centrism. - OneTrueDabe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Leaving in the evening has another advantage... When you plan to leave at "SIX AM, SHARP!" you force yourself to wake up early, which screws up your circadian rhythm.
If you leave around 7:00-9:00pm, and drive for, say four hours, by the time you're ready to nap, you'll already be well on your way. Then, when you wake up the next morning, you'll be in an unfamiliar place, and that much more alert when it comes time to start driving again. - ilikefun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0map does not load in opera.
damn IE... =( - merlin2525, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess it doesn't like me. I can't get on. I'm gonna have to stay with mapquest
- johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1and, incidentally, what is it you think i am jealous of??
- ilikefun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg for the history lesson
- johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1goddamit wok, whats the matter with you?? my post was directed at THE SUBMITTER not the website. i am getting sick of reading the headlines of these submissions only to find that they apply only to North Americans. my point is that people who submit US-only material should indicate it in their headline. you are living up to the dumb american stereotype. well done.
---and yes, you are. - frankpadams, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0US-centrism is common on the Internet....but you're incorrect in ascribing the blame here. Interestingly, you should know that the lead programmer on this lives in Argentina. US-centrism isn't the problem... it's that publicly available data, frequently updated, in a standard format that can be integrated... is not available for many other countries.
- johnjohnstonson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1stop being an arsehole wok. my comment wasn't directed at the website, but rather the person who submitted this to digg. last time i checked, 'digg' wasn't an exclusive club for obese intellectually devoid americans, but rather a global social networking site. if you want to post something that is only for americans (and Dnordbak, this is directed at you) then at least have the good sense to understand that not only americans read digg.
god i hate americans. - corvairkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Google maps to plan the route & print it out.
Environment Canada to check conditions between here and there. http://weatheroffice.gc.ca/canada_e.html
GasBuddy to check for the lowest fuel prices along the way. http://www.gasbuddy.com/ - circle26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Ever wondered what time you should leave for a long road trip?"
-yes, every damn time I take a long road trip. - LeapFrog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The site uses one average speed for each trip (default = 55 mph), regardless of roads used. Let's see - my local access street = interstate speed. I think not.
Come on now, even Micro$loth Streets*Trips does better than this. Any improvement in enroute times due to weather is lost in the inaccurate speed calculations. - owais, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0hot!
