- vat0r, on 04/10/2009, -17/+182I'd rather see free upgrades for vista users.
- noutoo, on 04/10/2009, -3/+159why would anyone downgrade from Win 7 to Vista??
- DeusNova, on 04/10/2009, -3/+99Actually I'm pleasantly surprised with Windows 7, it's everything what Vista should have been.
- Malteserr, on 04/10/2009, -1/+93I don't think anyone that gives Windows 7 a chance will want to downgrade.
- magamiako, on 04/10/2009, -4/+92People seriously need to move on already. Almost all CPUs sold now are multi-core and you can even get desktop systems for $500 with 4G of ram in them. Recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 530S from Best Buy for a customer that was pre-loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium, 4G of ram, and a dual core CPU for $500. It's a very low end CPU but runs Vista extremely well.
- CoD4, on 04/10/2009, -7/+80Yes because development is free
- ColonelSlanders, on 04/09/2009, -69/+141i love microsoft i love windows 7, vista
this is great that they're allowing choice for pcs
i love windows vista and i can't wait to get windows 7 :) - brucealmighty, on 04/09/2009, -21/+66Of course they don't promise to continue supporting the older systems.....but then Microsoft Support has always been kind of an oxymoron anyhow.......
- burnerz, on 04/10/2009, -16/+53I actually logged on to digg you up. I love vista as well and have used every version of windows since 3.1. Nice how the fanboys are digging you down eh?
- Spuy767, on 04/10/2009, -3/+29When vista came out, it ***** sucked, that's why people downgraded.
- twiztidsinz, on 04/10/2009, -6/+31If anyone's interested, I'll be willing to take your copy of Windows 7 if you feel you do not want it.
I will even give you my copy of Windows XP Professional SP2 along with a SlipStreamed copy (LEGAL!!) of SP3 for easy installation. - stilesja, on 04/10/2009, -6/+28Ya know, I kind of like Windows 7. I like Leopard on my iMac better, but you know, I took a 3 year old Compaq laptop that I bought for $650 with with a Turion 64 1.8ghz and an integrated Radeon Mobility 200M video card and put the beta on it. It took a little work getting the sound going, but the damn thing runs Aero, performs similarly to XP which was on there previously and is a pretty solid system. I probably wouldn't buy a new Windows computer, but I'll definitely get the final version of Windows 7 to go on this laptop for my wife.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -4/+26You're probably a troll, but shut the ***** up - 7 is actually a nice product at this point, and they deserve all the praise they get for it.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -1/+23I had Vista, and didn't like it - it looks like they fixed everything I hated about Vista for 7 and then some - it's a really nice OS.
- adammharvey, on 04/10/2009, -2/+23honestly i dont see the point in this, im using W7 everyday and think its top notch still somethings neep worked out, and even Vista isnt that bad of an OS
- beesaretasty, on 04/10/2009, -0/+18Upgrading to Vista would be $100. I imagine it would be about the same to 7. Seems reasonable to me for something you use every day.
- MWeather, on 04/10/2009, -4/+21DOS 1 wasn't a Microsoft product. Seattle Computer Products made it.
- NeoCortex, on 04/10/2009, -2/+19There should at least be a modest upgrade cost, but that's it.
- EntropyFan, on 04/10/2009, -2/+17Very true, but sometimes software is a problem. Which is why MS has always allowed downgrade rights.
When you bought XPPro, you had downgrade rights to NT4 and Win2K
For some reason, a bunch of absolute ***** morons want the fact that MS hasn't changed its downgrade policies to mean something about Win7. Just shows how desperate the ABM'rs are. - lazyslacker, on 04/10/2009, -0/+15I like Vista but then again I have a fast computer. It kind of seems like it's unnecessarily resource-intensive.
- Kevin108, on 04/10/2009, -1/+16I have an Eee 701 that I've upgraded to 2 GB of RAM. I previously ran XP SP3 on it. Last week I installed Windows 7. It is almost just as fast as XP and is still in beta. Fast enough that I plan to leave it installed, in fact. And we're talking about a system running at 630 MHz. After Windows 7 is released, nobody will even remember Vista.
- Rizzler, on 04/10/2009, -0/+14What?
- wolferz, on 04/10/2009, -2/+15"So losing support means an insecure and eventually unusable OS"
just because i hear a hint of one of my pet peeves in this comment i would like to, once again, point out how this is not some evil thing ms is doing... its a normal part of any industry where continuing support for a product indefinitely is financial suicide... the automotive industry for example.
Eventually something will break on that 1975 Ford F150... and you will ether have to jury rig a solution or you will have to get one of the newer models because ford no longer makes parts for it and nether do third parties. The difference, of course, is that the automotive industry moves at a snail's pace compared to the computer industry... a '75 f150 is equivalent to an '01 Dell in this case.
That's just life... people who keep whining about it are just being immature. Not saying you are... unless you really were whining about it at least... - newsboys, on 04/10/2009, -1/+14I'm burying you, but it's still better than half the comments on here.
- ktm9rick, on 04/10/2009, -6/+18if you've tried windows vista and 7 you'd realize nobody in their right mind would want to downgrade to vista. and no, a lot of computers that come with vista can't run it properly unless you're willing to shell out a few grand.
- netrah, on 04/10/2009, -0/+10This has been part of the terms since windows 3.1 not news.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -1/+12Allowing downgrades is a nice option for users, but I'm shocked that they would allow you to downgrade Windows 7 to XP. Didn't I just read an article here about how support for XP ends April 14th?
Judging by the beta, though, I think Microsoft may be pleased with how few people do choose to go with the downgrade. - CheesyPoofs, on 04/10/2009, -0/+11Yeah, running win7 beta on a crappy p4 3.0ghz HT 1gb of ram that came with vista basic runs so much better on win7. I don't experience any choke what so ever.
- roxgod666, on 04/10/2009, -1/+11Okay, lets see your logic here.
Windows 7 has improved:
1. Speed
2. Security
3. Stability
4. Usability
5. Organization
6. Features
7. Appearance
8. Customization
If all that makes it "vista 2.0", what the ***** will it take to make it a new OS? A brand new kernel? You don't know what you're talking about. Vista service pack 2 will be Vista 2.0. Windows 7 is Windows 7. Get over it. - schnikies79, on 04/10/2009, -4/+14Well the M$ thing is about as childish as it gets.
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -5/+15Windows 7 > Everything
- Tr33fiddy, on 04/10/2009, -4/+14Exactly what I thought - what kind of person makes a rational decision to do away with 7 in favour of Vista...
Vista is to 7 what Me was to XP. - SpoonMSU, on 04/10/2009, -2/+11This is one of the worst sets of comments I've ever seen on Digg.
- overnine9k, on 04/10/2009, -3/+12Actually I wasn't being sarcastic!
- Kazbaeden, on 04/10/2009, -1/+10When people complain about choice, why do they blame Microsoft. Apple is the one who won't allow their OS on competing systems.
- quarkde, on 04/10/2009, -4/+13Why would someone downgrade to Vista or XP?
- norman619, on 04/10/2009, -0/+9Hell yes. I've been running W7 on a 5 year old laptop and it runs great. Actually is faster than XP was on it.
- beesaretasty, on 04/10/2009, -3/+12He didn't say they should, just that he'd rather see it. For the record, I would like to see it too but I also think that would be stupid for them to do.
- Krissam, on 04/10/2009, -1/+9It's a 32bit limit, not a Windows limit.
- Brandoskey, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7what kind of moron blows 3 grand on a computer?
- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -25/+33I'm still happy with XP and really don't see a need to switch.
- roxgod666, on 04/10/2009, -2/+10Why would that be sarcasm? He's right. Both Windows and PCs offer more customization than Leopard and Macs. It's not even an opinion.
- birch25, on 04/10/2009, -4/+11At what point does it become funny that people still use an 8 year old operating system? I'm not saying XP is a piece of crap or anything, it's quite solid, but the world is moving on. I'm using Windows 7 but my fiancee is still on XP (like most non-tech savvy people, she only upgrades her OS when she gets a new computer) and when I use her computer everything feels very archaic. The start menu is not as useful, search is basically useless, and the UI is ***** ugly by today's standards.
Apple does a major update of OSX every year or two and most Linux distros update every few months and everyone updates. Yet for some reason there are Windows users who refuse to update their OS despite the fact that Win7 is better than XP in just about every way imaginable (at this point, I'd say Vista is better than XP as well).
For my fellow Mac people (yeah, I love both platforms), XP came out a few months after 10.1. How does that compare to Leopard today? - nehalp100, on 04/10/2009, -1/+8No that's XP, but I hear Windows 7 comes with onion rings
- MysticMist, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7Who is stupid enough to downgrade to Vista?!?!
- wolferz, on 04/10/2009, -3/+10***** ms haters never cease to amaze me... no matter how many times i see you idiots flip from bitching about a problem to bitching about the solution does it ever sink in just how delusional you are.
UAC is a classic example. It's less obtrusive than sudo and provides a solution to the security problem windows has been plagued with for an age... so what do all the ms haters do? Switch from bitching about insecurity to bitching about UAC.
Windows XP was the first true desktop orriented windows NT... it fixed the vast majority of stability problems from windows 2k and old win9x kernels... what do the ms haters do? Stop bitching about stability and start bitching about compatibility. (and note that almost all of xp's stability problems were the result of its security problem... so pretty much any bitchign about stability under xp is really the same as bitching about security)
Ever hear the saying "you can't make an omelet without braking some eggs?" Everything has a price. Improving stability meant moving to a more stable kernel (and braking compatibility) and improving security meant reducing convenience (as it almost always does). Grow up already. - Javy42, on 04/10/2009, -3/+10That just doesn't make sense.... there's not going to be any need for a downgrade... I'm running windows7 on my netbook and it blows the XP version it originally had out of the water.
What Microsoft needs to do if they really want to save face is offer free upgrades from Vista to 7. - norman619, on 04/10/2009, -1/+8The market is what determines what is offered. You are free to use whatever OS you like. Since well over 90% of the world's computers are running some flavor of Windows it would be stupid to support something when it is clear you will not see much of a, if any, on your investment in that market. It's basic business. How about you demand your fav OS's become more compatable with the dominant OS? If you want access to the same library of applications that is what will need to happen.
- foofightrs777, on 04/10/2009, -0/+7Secerity on 98 was great. Log-in password? Nah, I'll just hit the Esc key. I don't need no stinkin' login.
- norman619, on 04/10/2009, -1/+8FutureGuy:
Why should you? Most people here have no idea what they are talking about. Windows 7 is Vista the way it should have been. Vista, while it's an OK OS, feels like a beta version. Windows 7 is Vista cleaned up and properly optomized. -
