- medost, on 10/31/2009, -4/+42This is great news. However windows 7 is even better for me.
- Infowarsdotcom, on 11/01/2009, -1/+28PC gaming is awesome. Your ***** rig is not.
- VinceIP, on 11/01/2009, -3/+15Still waiting for all those great DX10 exclusive games.
- sirbeta, on 11/01/2009, -0/+11That doesn't mean what you think it means, Joe. Just because you have 11 installed doesn't mean you're actually using it. My 8800GT sure as hell doesn't support 11, but I do have it installed by default.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 11/01/2009, -0/+11do you even know what youre talking about?
- dha07030, on 11/01/2009, -0/+10I own a 4890 and it DOES NOT support Direct X 11.
- dha07030, on 11/01/2009, -1/+11Yeah what the hell there should be a dozen games playable the month it's released! Just felt like being a prick today huh?
- kerwinste, on 10/31/2009, -2/+11Same for me.
- dha07030, on 11/01/2009, -2/+114890s don't support Dx11
- Flinty, on 11/01/2009, -0/+9Hardware tessellation FTW!
- TheBlargh, on 11/01/2009, -0/+9with that logic people should stick with a 10 year old computer.
- i4mt3hwin, on 11/01/2009, -0/+9Vista didn't kill DX10, DX10 was never really alive. The problem is a developer at the time pretty much had to code a DX9 render path. There was just way too many limitations - I mean even if XP did somehow get DX10, you'd still have like 50% of your playerbase using DX9 hardware. It would be cheaper for a dev to do DX9 and have it play on all, then do DX9 and 10 for the sake of being like "cool we have 10"
- Sabretou, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3He's perfectly understandable, unlike consoles, PCs don't get six trashy "launch titles" everytime new hardware comes up.
- themastersb, on 11/01/2009, -0/+3Your software may have DX11, but not the hardware.
- hardeep1singh, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3I meant I upgraded to Windows 7.
- Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 11/01/2009, -1/+4I do not own a 4890. I also do not have DX11 support.
I am sad. - mason092, on 11/01/2009, -1/+3Nope. Everyone switched over to Windows 7 in a matter of weeks.
- MorpheousMarty, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2All new versions of DirectX start that way, but eventually the new stuff overtakes the old. But it usually happens a little faster than this, and I suspect it was because they tied DX10 to Vista.
- Sabretou, on 11/01/2009, -0/+2I have a llama and I get ice cream with lightning.
- Flinty, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1Get back in your time machine..
- MorpheousMarty, on 11/01/2009, -5/+6Man, Vista really killed DX10. I hope that since Windows 7 doesn't have stink that Vista had, developers will take advantage of some of the advancements made since DX9.
- krisrm, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1Everything is so... round :D
- dstz, on 11/01/2009, -1/+2Arkham Asylum looks gorgeous on a cheap 4850 in 1680x1050, i'm not ready to spend trice the $ for half the fps. DX9 for me with no regrets whatsoever. So it's partly because of me that games are still mostly DX9 compatible, sue me :p (*)
* on a second thought, don't, that would be ***** expensive ! - HonoredMule, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1Man, liars get all the cool stuff.
- nikhil760, on 11/01/2009, -1/+1too late
- TrainByte, on 11/03/2009, -0/+0Glad to hear they're not alienating Vista users like they did with DX10 and XP.
- doshindude, on 11/01/2009, -4/+4Vista is old news, it's all about Win7 now.
- Sabretou, on 11/01/2009, -1/+1That the gameplay has suffered stagnancy is a fault of the developers and not Microsoft's DirectX team. DirectX is committed to delivering the smoothest audio-visual capabilities for video games and that's what they'll do with every single upgrade.
If you hate that gameplay has gone stale, it's because developers have either gone lazy or stopped evolving gameplay for some other reason. Blaming it on DirectX or even linking it to DirectX is a stupid move. - fragMasterFlash, on 11/01/2009, -1/+17IP is in the wild? YIKES!
- Junior612, on 11/01/2009, -1/+1LOL Joe I love how you come back and keep trying! Keep it up though, and while you're at it can you see what version your gameboy has!
- ytrp, on 11/01/2009, -1/+0It's more like the industry's focus on graphics usually results in gameplay that suck balls. I was trying to indicate that piggybacking a gameplay related feature on a hardware graphics API would actually be more productive to the industry than this endless stream of graphical enhancements.
- ytrp, on 11/01/2009, -1/+0Developer's are not lazy, they are extremely hard working professionals. They do what the producers tell them to do because it's a part of their job description. Graphics make money, so graphics are what retains the focus. Graphics programmers get hired, armies of artists get hired, and two programmers get dedicated to shaping the gameplay on a project that clearly requires more gameplay programmers. This is not a secret or anything, go visit your nearest AAA game developer.
I'm not blaming anything on DirectX, and I fully support Microsoft's development of it. Kudos to the DirectX team, they are doing their job. Game developers are doing their jobs too, and if you read my post you would have realized that I am criticising consumers for continuing to buy the prettier versions of last year's games and for producers for having good business sense.
"even linking" these issues to DirectX is perfectly acceptable when the box of the game you purchase uses DirectX 10/11 as a primary marketing weapon. Microsoft didn't make them write that on the box, the producer did that of their own accord. Your advice is sound but not applicable in this case, so please don't lecture me about stupid moves based on your erroneous conclusions. - MaTT2011, on 11/01/2009, -2/+1Yeah, i gotta agree with Ytrp on this one.
The gaming industry has become pretty stagnant when it comes to evolving gameplay. Most companies are just interested in making safe bets....which yields mediocre results. You have to bet big to win big, everyone knows this. But the gaming industry? Well, only Nintendo knows it....and thats why they've been number one more times than anyone else, thats why they have money shooting out their ears.
PS3/360 are basically lost causes. They just make shooters, slap on new graphics and call it a day. The PC gaming market has been following suit and only modders have done anything to really make great games. Granted there are games out there that DO take risks, think TF2 , world of goo and even the recent "Borderlands" (pc version only, dear god...i had both and i have no idea why someone would play it on console other than not having a choice).
But the bottom line is that directX 11 will do nothing more than convince people to buy the same games but with new graphical features that ultimately do VERY LITTLE in the way of offering developers a means to the end of evolved gameplay. The creative ones will, but most wont. Thats just the nature of things. The industry has too much money invested to be "creative" or to invest in something that doesnt involve shooting people in the face to advance a mediocre plot. - inactive, on 11/02/2009, -3/+1Do people still play games on their PCs? Seriously?
- FoxFaction, on 11/01/2009, -3/+1Only a few more versions of direct X before they start supporting 3D monitors... I cannot wait. I'm going to be one of the first adopters. Viewing things in actual 3d is so awesome.
- sputnikv, on 11/01/2009, -6/+3direct 10 11
-_- - ytrp, on 11/01/2009, -4/+1Most graphical enhancements do nothing for gameplay. Modern game development revolves around slapping the same old ***** into a shiny new package, and the rapid down votes to my original comment demonstrate how oblivious or apathetic people are in regards to the state of the industry. Perhaps the intention of my comment was not clear, but the point is the time spent on improving visuals dwarfs the time spent creating revolutionary gameplay. I'm not saying graphics are bad, but the rate of improvement of graphics is incredibly disproportional to the rate of improvement of gameplay.
Do you really enjoy playing the same thing that you played last year, or do you not know any better because you are a part of the group that never had a chance to play games before rendering technologies became the driving force of the game industry? Do you know what you are talking about? - ytrp, on 11/01/2009, -4/+0Why shouldn't we still use computers from 10 years ago? The gameplay from 10 years ago is basically identical to gameplay today. The only difference is that now you need a modern machine to render the exact same gameplay scenario that you experienced a decade ago. You may think I'm a cheap ass, but from the perspective of a producer lower minimum requirements invites more sales.
I keep seeing top 10 lists for peoples' pick for the best game ever. Console gamers go for games like Final Fantasy 7, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Super Mario 64. PC gamers go for games like Baldur's Gate, Deus Ex, Half-Life and Fallout. What do all of these games have in common? They are all at least 9 years old, and any PC can render these games today. Rendering is usually the only thing stopping old PCs from running new games. - thunderclap, on 11/01/2009, -6/+2because using direct x will make gameplay suck balls.
- hardeep1singh, on 11/01/2009, -9/+2I don't have Vista anymore.

Maybe you should go back to your xBox and leave the gaming to the big boys, Joe. - ytrp, on 11/01/2009, -11/+0***** this "your PC is old and *****" logic. The gameplay hasn't changed so why should his rig have to change? Don't get me wrong, my passion is PC games, but when the core gameplay mechanics don't improve then there really isn't a point in "upgrading". Any gameplay mechanic from today can be implemented on hardware from 10 years ago. Everything beyond gameplay is entirely polish. Should polish deter people from purchasing one's product? I think not.
- JoeHague, on 11/01/2009, -17/+2I have a 4890 and I get DirectX 11 with Windows 7
- ytrp, on 11/01/2009, -17/+1How about adding the "make gameplay not suck balls" feature one of these DirectX milestones?
- NeoSporin, on 11/01/2009, -20/+2People still use Vista?
- Topher06, on 10/31/2009, -31/+2Awesome, I can play....nothing....now with faster performance. PC gaming is awesome!
