- sportsdude11751, on 09/23/2009, -8/+171Windows7, Project Natal, Courier .. Microsoft is on a roll. Hopefully everything works as demonstrated!
- maxsunset, on 09/23/2009, -11/+160Far more interesting than all of the apple tablet concepts I've seen!
- xerograde, on 09/23/2009, -3/+125"The UI is freakishly Apple"
Actually I think it is rather like Win7/Zune/Surface. Microsoft is finally coming back to the cutting edge. - plainandsimple, on 09/23/2009, -14/+129"The UI is freakishly Apple" - from MikeDTyke who submitted the article.
So it's 'freakishly Apple' how? Apple hasn't officially released or mentioned about a tablet/booklet product yet, so I don't see how you can tell what the UI will be like. Is it because you think the interface is rather fluid, looks rather easy and intuitive to use, and looks nice overall? Last I check, Apple wasn't the only company that's been able to do that before.
Sorry Mike, but it's kinda annoying to hear someone compare some product a lot of times with an Apple product, as if Apple has set a standard in everything. - bentracy, on 09/23/2009, -0/+95I hope this thing makes it to the market.
- Paal, on 09/23/2009, -5/+75I would trade my iPod, my MacBook, my iPhone... AND my girlfriend's iPhone for this device.
If this works, my girlfriend is going to be rather angry. - norman, on 09/23/2009, -5/+74do so badly want.
- nshady, on 09/23/2009, -2/+65I hope we can all be adult enough to admit how bad-ass this concept is, regardless of any affiliation we may have to one company or another. This type of stuff helps push the industry forward no matter who comes up with it.
- Anthop, on 09/23/2009, -4/+59Microsoft has been the biggest pusher of tablet technology for the past decade. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I remember when tablets were considered Bill Gate's pet tech. Even the various Linux distros to this day don't have the same level of support for ink and pen input that Windows has.
And now suddenly, everyone conveniently forgets that just because Apple >might< come out with a tablet product? Suddenly tablet computing is Apple's innovation and Microsoft is stealing Apple's thunder? Suddenly Microsoft is releasing Courier as a response to Apple's mythical tablet? How wrong-headed do you have to be!?
Apple isn't even part of the discussion here! The Courier is an evolution (and long-overdue, IMO) of Microsoft's own tablet heritage. There are whole groups in product development and Research at Microsoft that have been eating and breathing tablet tech for years while Apple was busy dismissing it as a bag of hurt.
So don't even pretend that Microsoft is "stealing from" or "inspired by" Apple in this case. Because even if you claim that the "home button looks like it could be from an iPhone," you'd only be making the most shallow of comparisons. To even suggest that Microsoft somehow stole this from Apple is a huge insult to all the hundreds of people who have spent countless hours developing tablet technology over the years. - diggspellcheck, on 09/23/2009, -0/+51Why the hell has it taken so long to get a decent tablet on the market?
- djtommyp, on 09/23/2009, -4/+52you forgot ZHD
- CressCrowbits, on 09/23/2009, -7/+49"a single iPhone-esque home button"
What? Because the iPhone was the first ever device with a 'home' button?
***** amateurs. - knickboy87, on 09/23/2009, -14/+49Something tells me I'll never be able to use this thing like she did in the video.
- CannonGod, on 09/23/2009, -1/+32Reminds me of Penny’s computer book from Inspector Gadget ^_^
http://inspector-gadget.net/wp-content/gallery/go- ... - Mindthread, on 09/23/2009, -2/+31Image #2 shows a Courier device syncing with the cloud, a mobile phone, and a PC. Imagine taking field notes and having all devices and collaborators sharing realtime information via a Live Mesh type service. AWESOME!
This has potential to be a killer device. - Onethirtytwo, on 09/23/2009, -1/+29Looks amazing.
- craftyshrew, on 09/23/2009, -1/+27Surface also blew me away...
- kanojo1969, on 09/23/2009, -0/+21Interesting. Some complaints on the gizmodo site were about the stylus input and the two-screen layout.
But that's exactly what they've done RIGHT. Stylus input is so natural when dealing with detailed information. It's not like a phone where all you want to do is mash a few buttons. With the tablet you need precision in your gestures, and the ability to write notes. You can't write a ***** letter using your index finger you *****.
And the screen layout is pure genius. Almost everything you do at work involves a work area and a reference area. This is why dual-monitor setups are so productive, because you have your work area on one screen and the other screen is your general-purpose browsing,/previewing area. Put that into a notebook form-factor and you've got an environment that is immediately productive. WIth one large screen you have to try and arrange the two areas yourself, which is surprisingly unintuitive. And the fact that having two screens lets you use a much more compact form factor is icing on the cake, it's ***** brilliant.
I'm not about to let Ballmer slide his salami down my throat but I will give credit where it's due - this is innovative and just plain better than every current tablet I've seen. The best part is that it's mostly software, you could do this with almost any device, except for the two screens. But in that case the software could make it feel like two screens anyway. - davesnare, on 09/23/2009, -7/+27Win 7, Natal, Zune HD, Bing and now Courier ! Looks like Microsoft is seriously pulling its act together..
Even though this is a concept/rumor and not a official confirmation hope the final product is as good or better.
Add a amazon kindle app to this and this will probably beat any ebook readers out there. - quamb, on 09/23/2009, -2/+22You'd hope so, considering those 'concepts' are made by fans with a budget of $0.
- Twinnie, on 09/23/2009, -2/+22It seems more freakishly MS Surface than Apple. Touch screens came of age and both MS and Apple jumped on it in similar ways, just Apple's product was more accessible to the public.
- Anthop, on 09/23/2009, -0/+18I've been using tablets for awhile now, and I've been waiting for something like this for awhile now. This is really what the tech should be: A digital notebook for ideas, a organizer of life, a high-tech moleskin. Not just a laptop with a pen thrown on it.
- thavi, on 09/23/2009, -4/+18freakishly apple my nuts
- ohreilly, on 09/23/2009, -1/+13Didn't you get the memo?
Everything must be compared to the iPhone, even though it's something that other devices did better years ago (or is something the iPhone doesn't do). That's why every phone that comes out is an "iPhone killer" even though the OS it runs has a market share way in excess of whatever Apple has. - RoiPerez, on 09/23/2009, -6/+18as a mac user, im absolutely fascinated by this! it feels like people on digg spend their time bashing microsoft and constantly licking apples balls because they put a camera into their ipod nano, and suddenly, BAMMMMMMM, after months of speculation about whether or not apple will release a tablet, suddenly microsoft come out with this? im MORE than impressed!
- confoundedjoe, on 09/23/2009, -0/+10Also, try sketching with a touchpad. Or taking calculus notes.
- darkfish, on 09/23/2009, -0/+10If this works with anywhere near the fluidity and speed of that video, it is a winner. Can't wait to see more details. Would be really ironic if MS instead of Apple makes this the successor to the Knowledge Navigator concept of the 80's.
- Twinnie, on 09/23/2009, -3/+13Yeah, except the iPhone was announced Jan '09, MS Surface was announced May '08 and the first unit was shipped April '09. So MS only had about four months to rip off the iPhone.
- digitalpencil, on 09/24/2009, -0/+10there's always been huge support for MS on this site, type '***** apple' into any comment thread regardless of context and await diggs. for some reason, people just like to pretend it's the other way around..
regardless, brilliant concept and great to see a steady flow of solid ideas coming out of Redmond. - rebrad, on 09/23/2009, -5/+14You got the first part right.
- zaren, on 09/23/2009, -1/+10Here here. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Apple fanboy, and this may be the first time I've ever said I wanted something from Microsoft. Other than a few quibbles with the interface (too many ways to interact with the same screen, for example), this looks like an excellent design concept. I've loved the flip-open, writable-surface interface since my Newton days, and am thrilled to see someone trying to bring it back.
- newman8r, on 09/23/2009, -2/+11yeah, your hand is going to be pissed
- demiurgency, on 09/23/2009, -0/+9How about standing? As much as I prefer typing to handwriting, the stylus allows one-handed operation. Meaning you can hold it standing in one hand, and operate it with the other. Typing requires you to be sitting with the device on your lap, or on a table/desk/etc.
- sirhomer, on 09/23/2009, -1/+9Looks like the OLPC XO-2. http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO-2
- SkinnerBox, on 09/23/2009, -1/+9I was thinking the same thing. That means we're getting old.
- quamb, on 09/23/2009, -9/+17Remember what the portable market was like before the iPhone - and whilst not "freakishly Apple" I guess the slick touch screen nature of it all seems very iPhone-ish.
And the "home" button looks identical to the iPhone.
In anycase - it looks kick ass. Hopefully it actually becomes a real product and not just a concept. - rebrad, on 09/23/2009, -6/+14Looks like a winner as long as the hardware is not proprietary and overpriced.
- BigLou, on 09/23/2009, -1/+9Dugg, but I must admit it won't be a kindle killer. Remember that reading long books on a backlit LCD or OLED screen strains your eyes. E-ink displays are much more like ink on paper and are much easier to read.
- Shawn4168, on 09/24/2009, -1/+8Yeah, that bothers me too. Apple didn't invent pretty UI's, nor are they the only company that produces them today. In fact, the Zune interface (on both their 2/3G and HD players) is far nicer than anything you see on iPod. And some of the things that Compiz Fusion does is miles ahead of anything you see in OSX.
- bouche, on 09/23/2009, -1/+8where are all the microsoft fans coming from? I just double-checked my addressbar and sure enough, I AM on digg.com!
- Madmech, on 09/23/2009, -1/+8I could not agree more Anthop.
- n3rrd, on 09/23/2009, -1/+8Fluidity, for one thing. The demonstrations here were based around design and creativity, note taking, etc. None of those things suit typing, in my mind. Even as a touch typist, there are things I'd rather have a pen and paper for.
This interface is also more resistant to crumbs and dirt... lol. - inactive, on 09/23/2009, -0/+7What, they didn't call it the Arial?
- oriondr, on 09/23/2009, -1/+8I shared a table with the exec in charge of ms surface at MSDN Dev con last year :D
</claimtoinfamy> - highPhone, on 09/24/2009, -0/+6you have no girlfriend. enjoy your Courier device.
- Givorden, on 09/24/2009, -0/+6And the Arc mouse :)
- Elranzer, on 09/23/2009, -2/+8Cuz only Apple is allowed to design the cool tech, even if it was designed by someone else. The Dock in OSX is a good example of this.
- carl689, on 09/24/2009, -0/+5Google Jeff Han
- SkinnerBox, on 09/23/2009, -1/+6Holy crap. I thought I'd seen an Apple fanboy before, but this is like a whole new level.
- aerovisor, on 09/24/2009, -1/+6I agree....just like my windows mobile phone's so called "features" that never work the way they were proposed to...
