- Nekura20x6, on 06/20/2009, -10/+68Innovate? "Let's build a search engine!" Um, yeah - that was innovative back in 1998. You missed the boat by a few.
Now their new XBox Live Primetime services and Project Natal? *That's* innovative. - kaelyiesta, on 06/19/2009, -7/+44When one cannot idle upon a monopoly nor rely upon government protectionism naturally they will start being productive again, or else they will be discarded in favor of others that can do it better.
- cplusplus, on 06/20/2009, -3/+37I agree there is nothing new in bing.
- sammykeyes, on 06/20/2009, -8/+31You are aware that Microsoft has a lot of free stuff you can download, right? (Windows Live Essentials, Security software, Windows Live services, photo software, etc.)
Also, Microsoft also gives good deals to college students, and of course, volume licensing. - Keggluneq, on 06/20/2009, -2/+23If anything, Bing will force Google to make a better search engine. A little competition won't hurt. I love the scroll-down feature on Bing image searches. Would it kill Google to display more than 20 images/page?? If you want real innovation, though, try WolframAlpha.
- kreatre2007, on 06/20/2009, -17/+34Microsoft DOES NOT innovate. Vista, the Zune, Windows 7, and Internet Explorer are proof of that.
- rpeters, on 06/20/2009, -3/+19Don't forget the Visual Studio express stuff, plus college students get free VS, server 2003/2008 too.
And Apache isn't an OS, it's an app server. Linux is the free alternative to Win servers OSes. - seltaeb4, on 06/20/2009, -6/+19Innovation is very important to Microsoft's future.
Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to steal any new ideas. - inactive, on 06/20/2009, -6/+19Xbox Live?
- FredFredrickson, on 06/20/2009, -1/+14I searched for "SEO" in Bing and Google's Search Engine Optimization page was the third result on the list. Maybe you just don't know how to search for stuff?
- pixelguru, on 06/20/2009, -1/+13I think it has already been well established that Microsoft's capacity to truly innovate is limited at best. Historically, they lumber into established markets like pillaging brigands. There is little or no concern as to whether they can actually create products than are better than what is currently being used by the public - only a need to control at any cost. In reality, the dominance of Windows was due as much to the blunders of others as it was the shrewdness of Microsoft, and if it weren't for this largely accidental occurrence, Microsoft would have winked out long ago.
- jakem1, on 06/20/2009, -13/+25Windows 7 is proving to be a brilliantly executed project.
- techdever, on 06/20/2009, -0/+10for(;;)
*above_comment->Bury(); - jeffgtr, on 06/20/2009, -4/+14Knowing microsofts history I don't trust them with search. They are prone to bias and distortion. Xbox is one thing, something critical like search is quite another.
- FredFredrickson, on 06/20/2009, -6/+16Aside from the RRoD thing, I'd say they've done a pretty good job with Xbox as well - much better than I would have expected after the first Xbox came and went.
- loneraver, on 06/20/2009, -4/+14Bing is a Live rebranding. AND IT SUCKS
- dagamer34, on 06/20/2009, -0/+10WolframAlpha is not a search engine... but I'm guessing you knew that already.
- 6minuteabs, on 06/20/2009, -1/+10Try searching web optimization on Google and Google Optimization doesn't appear on page 1 either. Why do you apply such a higher standard and say that with the same results, Bing sucks but Google is great?
- readme, on 06/20/2009, -3/+12Bing innovative? It's just a Google clone with some custom result pages. Innovation would have been an Altavista to Google level paradigm shift. Bing is not that, it's an incremental change.
- shrewduser, on 06/20/2009, -10/+19microsoft have proven they aren't impartial enough to be my main search engine...
- Leerlaufprozess, on 06/20/2009, -0/+9Can anyone tell me the differences between Bing and the Live Search? I'm seriously asking, because so far it seems to be more of a rebranding than an actual innovation to me. The video-preview is nice but everything else seems to be exactly the same as in Live Search or any other common search engine out there. I'm not complaining, Live Search and Bing are/were certainly usable search engines, I just don't get why everyone is getting excited all of the sudden.
- inactive, on 06/20/2009, -1/+10You sound like someone who has no idea how computer software is created. Creating a search engine that is able to accurately understand what the user is trying to find based on their input and giving results that pertain is exceedingly difficult. Think of it this way: in the half a century or so that computers have been in use we've managed to develop almost lifelike graphics, but search engines have only progressed to the point where we're able to enter in a short text query and receive a list of sites that might have what you were looking for. There's room for progress.
- 6minuteabs, on 06/20/2009, -6/+14And Google Earth was bought. And Picasa was bought. And YouTube was bought. I can go on and on. The point is, who gives a *****? If a company sees an opportunity to improve their product, and they find it's cheaper to buy the technology rather than start from zero, they buy it. Big f'in deal.
- BertieRooster, on 06/20/2009, -3/+11Heh, Microsoft is no doubt used to having to "reset" after a "crash".
- chongli, on 06/20/2009, -8/+15Except that microsoft didn't actually develop it, they bought it from PowerSet.
- marx2k, on 06/20/2009, -0/+7mad props, huh?
- dsn0wman, on 06/19/2009, -16/+23I am not sure how innovative Bing is other than it's basically Micrsoft's only well executed project in the last 5 years.
- DarkShroud, on 06/20/2009, -1/+7But
it's
not
google. - tao52nyc, on 06/21/2009, -0/+6"Microsoft innovation" translates to: "Who can we copy or steal from next?"
- s0ny, on 06/20/2009, -0/+6"Microsoft Surface? (Using the iPhone to claim otherwise is false: Surface had been in development since long before the iPhone)"
And the iPhone had been in development long before it was released. Its not like Apple just decided in 1 day "hey, lets release some phone thingy tomorrow...GET TO WORK!" - BalancingAct, on 06/20/2009, -4/+10I find it absolutely hilarious to see the words "Microsoft" and "innovate" in the same sentence or article.
- Jumpeplowski, on 06/20/2009, -3/+9LOL! Bing is innovative? Bing is Live Search, which was already not innovative by being a ***** Google twin, with a different name. Innovative, my ass. Microsoft needs to stay away from things they don't know how to design.
- dragossh, on 06/20/2009, -1/+6Put a new name on a product, market it as a new product and people will get excited. See NeXTSTEP -> OS X, Windows Vista -> Windows 7.
- 6minuteabs, on 06/20/2009, -1/+6Honestly, how do you expect anyone to innovate on transportation? It's pretty simple. I can walk or ride a horse. I have the fastest dang horse in the whole county. With this fancy leather saddle and sharp spurs, I can arrive ahead of schedule and in comfort than anybody.
- rda1441, on 06/20/2009, -3/+8It certainly defines microsoft's capability to make really really crappy commercials.
- TheMachine1, on 06/20/2009, -1/+6He said he had a problem with Google.
- funkdoctor77, on 06/20/2009, -3/+8I wish that Microsoft would follow Apple in one specific way (that for me would be greater than innovation) -
1) Hire a Support staff that consists of US citizens who have a real knowledge of the product at hand. :(
As someone who owns an equal amount of Microsoft/Apple products - (I have had a Zune 30/80, Ipod touch, shuffle, nano classic, Xbox 360, PC's and Im writing this on my mac mini) --
I have had ***horrible*** experiences with all of Microsoft's various support teams. They barely speak english and they dont know anything about the Zune/Xbox. (I had 2 Zunes break, and 4(!)(!) Xbox's get the RROD. I once called Microsoft Zune tech support, to see if my repaired Zune had been sent back yet, and the "Support" tech asked me "Would you mind trying to reset your Zune device?" I replied "Ma'am, the Zune is in your repair center. How could I possibly reset the device?" I was ready to scream in frustration.
Everytime I call Apple, they have people who can speak English, and understand their products. This should mean something to American citizens. - inactive, on 06/20/2009, -2/+7I can't see any real difference between Bing and Google.
Duplication isn't innovation. - inactive, on 06/20/2009, -1/+66minuteabs: Google Search and Gmail are far and away the best versions of what they are. The innovation is their simplicity and how well they work.
- vuke69, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5Well... Digg made a reply button, which at least you have apparently never seen before.
- Techneaux, on 06/20/2009, -5/+10Google does the same: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Google-039-Only-100 ...
- MethodOne, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5I find WolframAlpha useful for help with math-related problems. Wish I had that back in school.
- Roy911, on 06/20/2009, -0/+5Since it was C#,

- inactive, on 06/20/2009, -1/+5I never heard of this before. It's a great idea, I'll definitely sign up.
I'm also giving it mad props for getting all up in Google's grill. - kanojo1969, on 06/20/2009, -0/+4I'm sorry, are you aware that you can refine your search terms? The time you spend clicking through 900 images would be far better spent thinking of ways to refine your search to bring different sets to the first few pages.
Personally, I've had bing set as my default search for about 3 weeks, and overall my gut feeling is that they are really, really close to google. The difference is noticeable, but it's not huge. Google returns better results once in every 10 or 15 searches.
This is quite a feat, nobody else has come close and it's even more impressive when you think of google's incredible architecture and resources... being able to produce very similar results is quite amazing.
However, what matters is where they take it. It's a lot easier to chase than to lead, and how MS and Google's paths diverge now will determine who ends up the winner. - thedez, on 06/20/2009, -0/+4Microsoft did have a search engine in 1998, MSN Search.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Msn_search - inactive, on 06/20/2009, -1/+5Google and Yahoo are funny names. So someone at Microsoft decided to use Bing, a funny name for their search engine. Can Microsoft be any less obvious?
- NeoTechni, on 06/20/2009, -0/+4Hey! The first XBOX was awesome
- jeffgtr, on 06/20/2009, -3/+7I tried bing as well. Ok for casual search, inadequate when you need to find something fast. I never went back either. My other search is knowing microsofts history I don't really trust their search to be unbiased.
