- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -0/+75The one thing you need to know about Windows 8. It'll be after 7.
- XxbladesfirexX, on 10/22/2009, -1/+74The title "8 things you need to know about Windows 8" should really be "8 things we decided to speculate on about Windows 8".
- jedthehumanoid, on 10/21/2009, -3/+42Good idea to use the Windows 8 developers' linkedin profiles to work out what will be in the OS
- anenokoji, on 10/22/2009, -4/+38Windows needs a complete re-write. Drop backwards compatibility and start fresh. Get rid of the f*cking registry.
- kiantech, on 10/22/2009, -1/+20Wonder no more....it works great.
- netgoons, on 10/21/2009, -0/+18Any news on which place Windows Eight is gonna be launched? They choose a remote spanish village for Windows 7 because its name was synonymous to seven.
- rand21althor, on 10/22/2009, -0/+16Now ready to forget Windows 7 and focus on Windows 8.
- strangewill, on 10/22/2009, -0/+15Hint: OSX is hardly used in business applications because of the lack of legacy support.
And it's why Windows doesn't do it, though I think they just need to create interface wrappers for all the older software, and emulate dropped features at the interface level as opposed to having it be a constant service on the OS level.
They shouldn't outright drop it, but they need to find a way to resolve an obvious issue. - mhearne, on 10/22/2009, -0/+15Doesn't Windows 7 get released at midnight tonight???
This all seems to me to be a bit premature. - chthonical, on 10/22/2009, -3/+15Why was 6 afraid of 7? Because 789. o_o
- HueleSnaiL, on 10/22/2009, -0/+11Yeah, Windows 8 "the ocho"

- dshigure, on 10/22/2009, -2/+8Hmm, with the exception of Windows 2000 Workstation, I'd say that most of Microsoft's desktop OS's since Windows 95 have lived out the lifespan they deserved.
Having a game plan for the next iteration of your product (which Microsoft is still getting around to doing) hardly makes you greedy :-P - TBBucs, on 10/22/2009, -0/+6Goddamn interns divulging company secrets.

- mrBitch, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5That's what she said.
- macmcraeart, on 10/22/2009, -5/+10if it's as good as 7 - I am excited to see it.
- crashingechelon, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5I really don't like crap like this. Sure it's nice to speculate on "what's next" but Windows 7 just got released. Part of the reason I stopped going to gaming forums is because people would wonder "what's the PSP2 gonna have?" "I wonder what the PS4 will be like?" "what's the xbox 720 gonna look like?". These statements are usually made before or barely after the current system is released. I wonder to what the future will hold, but can't you just be patient and work with what's out now and what they're gonna do for innovation on upgrades and firmware?
- captainchris, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5years of bad backwards compatibility and lack of apps. after that, smooth sailing.
- collution, on 10/22/2009, -2/+6them sounds what?
- thushan, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Its naive to think its that easy. I do agree with a reduction of reliance and eventually a complete removal of the registry.
Remember it came about in Windows NT (in 1990 shown at PDC - I wasn't there but my father was) as a replacement for INI files that were common in previous versions. It offered database like operation for settings. It seemed like a good idea - fast to access and avoided the profileration of INI files.
But unfortunately due to the funky world of COM, everyone's machine is now polluted with COM interfaces (GUIDs) all around, applications dump their settings in there and most of the time fail to cleanup after. The reliance has increased and it will only continue to grow as COM is being used.
As much as I dislike Apple as a company, I really think they nailed it earlier with their Property List idea, here's a good run down of differences:
http://www.forensicfocus.com/apple-mac-os-x-proper ...
Windows needs something new and different but also be API friendly. The registry as it stands now is a single point of failure source and is monolithic, machines of today can handle files much better than 20 years ago.
As for the idea of dropping backwards compatibility, HA! This isnt OS X, you can't just dump Win32 applications and expect businesses and third parties to just start a fresh. The eco-system is too big to attempt such a magnificent feat. - freediverx, on 10/22/2009, -1/+5And the next cycle of Microsoft VaporWare begins!
- DaviDTC, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4We have no clue what will be in Windows 8, but here is a list of what will be in Windows 8.
- inactive, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Are they kidding? I never feel like I have anything current in the computer world.
- mrBitch, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3@ crossmr, RE: " .. Does the sleep mode still blow in Windows 7? Whenever my friend's HP vista laptop goes to sleep it wakes up and nothing works. No mouse, no wireless internet, occasionally it curses at you for waking it up."
Yeah, same issue with Vista and sleep mode on a brand new PC here (my nephew's), and Windows 7 RC on that machine has the same issues. - chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3To add to what the distinguished internet goers above me said, This isn't a release by MS about Windows 8 and bragging about it. This is techradar.com using some pretty nice journalism and finding out information companies are not yet ready to release.
- Elranzer, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Same here. For that reason, my Windows 7 PC never goes to sleep.
It just sits there, and waits... in the dark... - crossmr, on 10/22/2009, -4/+7Does the sleep mode still blow in Windows 7? Whenever my friend's HP vista laptop goes to sleep it wakes up and nothing works. No mouse, no wireless internet, occasionally it curses at you for waking it up.
I remember attending a vista pre-release beta event put on my MS and they were carrying on about how sleep was so much better in vista. They lied... can anyone confirm if its better in 7? - freediverx, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Compounded by the fact that Microsoft always over-promises and under-delivers.

- yesitsme111, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1Well the release date is not until late 2011 or maybe 2012, good article from techradar, by the time windows 8 comes out maybe they will add more features even.
- jbmcb, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1FTA: "Sinofsky's expertise is execution rather than vision and for Windows 8 that could mean a pedestrian set of improvements rather than anything potentially game changing."
GOOD! What we want is a stable platform to run applications on, not something you have to re-learn every few years, and breaks your existing apps for good measure. - MasterQ, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1I read the article in Obscure Sports Quarterly.
- astrotrain, on 10/22/2009, -1/+2I wonder how many folks liked up at 12:01 am to buy their copy of Windows 7....

This is the real interesting bit :
" .. First off, it is important to know what a Property List (plist) actually is, and the type of information that can be stored within them. Apple Developers describe the plist as follows, “property lists organize data into named values and lists of values using several object types. These types give you the means to produce data that is meaningfully structured, transportable, storable, and accessible, but still as efficient as possible” (Property List Programming Topics, 2008). Plists can be considered the “registry” for OS X. A little later we will explore the structure of a plist file. The information contained within these files is different for each program on the system. Each contains the settings for the program, which calls the plist. Similar to Windows Registry entries, if you change any value set in the file, the program will run differently. It should be noted that plist are not a Mac OS X item. They are actually found within Linux and Unix distributions." - GravyDavy, on 10/22/2009, -1/+21,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10. What about 9? 7,8,9.
