- manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -34/+113Yes, your OS is basically crap to you.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+82Yes, seeing as how it works in firefox.
- offput, on 10/12/2007, -4/+80If this is done automatically simply by providing a set of photos of a common space, this is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. If not, then the eye candy is still awesome.
- hungryduck, on 10/12/2007, -10/+77The most amazing thing is that is that Microsoft actually made something that works with firefox!
- sdrawkcaB, on 10/12/2007, -7/+58This really is innovation, something rare to see these days.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45When i opened it i thought "Wtf microsoft is installing an .xpi file in firefox" what kind of black magic is this.. in the end this technology is freaking awesome stuff. Are they trying to set up some sort of equivalent to Google labs ?
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43Just to let everyone know. This is utilizing somewhat of a new web technology called Windows Presentation Foundation or WPF. Its like Flash only developed by Microsoft. No, its not a flash killer but has some advantages over flash.
More info about WPF here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Presentation_Foundation - Hipple, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39Are you confused about how Firefox works? If so, this seems like an odd place to comment.
If you're asking a general question, it's unlikely that you're the only confused Firefox user in the world. - Hipple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34"... a new technology from Microsoft Live Labs that takes a large collection of photos of a place or an object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed three-dimensional space."
Seems to suggest to me that the process is automated... - sauron256, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37Why? ASP .NET (and particularly ASP .NET AJAX) are fully cross-platform and cross-browser compatible. All of my .NET apps work in Firefox and Safari no worries.
- Rozza, on 10/12/2007, -9/+37That looks really cool.
MAC USERS: please, shut up with the fanboy stuff, do you realise how stupid you sound? I was once a mac evangalist, but its stupid. be quiet. if you want this stuff for mac, how about your wite to the fine people at microsoft mactopia. they do a great job at their apps, and they all use macs, THEY are the ones who can do something, not people on digg. Good grief!
ANYWAY... this is an awsome product, but i dont like it cause it doesnt run on my mac. blah blah blah.
Good day sir.
I SAID GOOD DAY! - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Which company did Microsoft buy this from again? Oh yeah! They didn't buy it - they made it in cooperation with the University of Washington!
Seriously, Microsoft does something new and that's compatible with Firefox AND helps out a place of learning and people still bitch! Pfft. - SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I microsoft product installing an extension in firefox is great. They could have just said it was IE only.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24That would require you to be in the proximity of a hot chick...
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Try updating from your commodore 64
- Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Works with Vista and Firefox 2.02
- Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Stop complaining. I want garage band and iWeb, but I don't get it because im using XP. Wonder why, so I can by a $1000+ mac.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18This thing isn't really web development in how you're thinking of the term. It more or less seems to be something that the browser is just hosting, It'd probably be easier to run as a standalone app. There doesn't seem to be much "web" as in js/html/css/etc. going on.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Firefox support came about a month ago.
- forensicmeteobo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Um... this is more of a web app, and it's just in its beginning stages. Would you rather them keep the beta version held up and work on a mac version and then release them both at the same time, when bugs could've been worked out in the meantime?
And also: it's from Microsoft's live.com. Do you really think they would strive to make it cross platform? That's like yelling at Apple for not releasing iLife on Windows!
edit: wow burritoking924 you just beat me! - lazyleo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16WoW thats looks so nice wonder if i could make my own projects in this software? would put a hot chick and fly around her!
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Your browser is old
Or perhaps unsupported
Meditate on this - Proggie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Is this the same thing as this earlier applet (that works on mac and linux)?
http://phototour.cs.washington.edu/applet/index.html - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@twtmc
except of course for their OS...
why dont you go bitch about that you cant run ilife on anything but mac? Why dont you bitch that you can't run sudo apt-get install on windows? - Poco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Everyone relax about what it runs in or doesn't run in. It is just a preview. You can't even provide your own photographs yet, so it might as well just be a movie. It is still a cool technology, regardless of your OS or browser. Just because you can't run the demo doesn't make it less cool.
- isleshocky77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Alright, linux and mac fanboys a like give it a rest. It's a tech preview of new upcoming application. The application definitely makes more sense as a standalone app. Now, if you can take the time to actually run it on a compatible os you will see that it is one the coolest applications to come along in a long time.
It was posted yesterday with an overwhelming reception on digg:
http://digg.com/videos/educational/Demo_of_Microsoft_s_Photosynth_software
It's amazing how a change in category translates in a change in response... do you mac fanboys just hang around the ms category looking for ***** to bitch at?
@offput: The operations are completely automated. From their faq's it tells how computationally intensive this process is:
This is answering the question "When will I be able to upload my own photos?"
"We want to provide this capability as soon as we can, but there are some real technical hurdles to solve before we’re ready for primetime. We're still learning what works and what doesn't with the recognition algorithms, improving them as we go. It's also very computationally intensive; the processing to build a collection can take hours or days at the moment. We're working on these issues, but we're not going to release anything until we're happy with the results. Please stay tuned to the blog for updates."

It should be pointed out that .mac stuff works on all platforms and browsers because they would be stupid to make it work only on OSX. When the other OS's have 85% of the market, it's a good business decision to make your cool stuff work for them too, since they aren't going to be convinced to buy OSX if it doesn't. MSoft, on the other hand, is perfectly happy to retain its huge market share, and most people who have OSX are so firmly entrenched in Apple's camp, so they would only be making it work for OSX out of the kindness of their hearts. And since MSoft doesn't have a heart, guess you're out of luck.

Thanks.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@BrokenDrum: Well it would stand to reason. I mean, they have a lot of money to spend on skunkworks/sandboxes/prototypes etc. They did after all create the XMLHTTP requests behind 'AJAX'.
- Pantsuninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Why? ASP .NET (and particularly ASP .NET AJAX) are fully cross-platform and cross-browser compatible. All of my .NET apps work in Firefox and Safari no worries."
ASP .NET is server side, so it really doesn't matter what kind of browser you use. For all I care you can use lynx to view ASP .NET pages. It will just push out normal html (or whatever else you need) if it's supposed to be on the web - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yep.. It is a technology developed by Washington University students.
- ElectroBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Go to Start Menu -> Applications and run the 32-bit version of IE (should solve your problem - you can't run 32-bit plugins in 64-bit IE and you can't run 32-bit drivers on 64-bit Windows at all)

Side Note: Ive attended a project fair put on by Microsoft Research about a year ago and was BLOWN AWAY by the stuff I saw. I really hope some of the things make it to market. - wvannus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6WOW. WOW. That's the most slackjawed I've ever been. And I've been slackjawed before.
- BrokenDrum, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Microsoft have had one of the best technology labs for a while, way before Google ever existed.
- sickanimations, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I agree! Apple is much more revolutionary! They take currently existing products and improve upon them. That's what a revolution is!
... Hold on. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Thanks! :-D
- TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6whoa.
I'm impressed - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"All of my .NET apps work in Firefox and Safari no worries."
What does that have to do with this, which obviously WON'T work in Safari? - cvarma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3screenshot: http://cvnetworks.net/viewuser.php?userid=24&iid=70
- alexandreracine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4On Linux it gave this. Ho well, I'll catch on later with Wine...
