- kylescousin, on 10/17/2009, -17/+267At least the packaging improved consistently.
- theaverageidiot, on 10/17/2009, -8/+185Once you start complaining about small bits of plastic that are recyclable anyways in a new version of Windows, your environmental friendliness level has officially crossed over from "Annoying" to "STFU".
- ManUnitdFan, on 10/17/2009, -1/+118I remember the first time I tried to open one of those plastic clam shells. I tried to open it like a book for a good ten minutes before I realized you pulled the middle section out sideways.
Anyone else? No? Just me? Damn... - doctordbx, on 10/17/2009, -3/+116Criticism of it still being plastic is potentially unfounded. Some carboard box bleaching, die cutting, and printing processes are far more harmful to the environment than recyclable plastic shells.
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -0/+68It would've been cool if MS would put Windows 7 on a flash drive version.
- randmcnally, on 10/17/2009, -1/+37really though back in 95 that packaging was the *****!
times and trends change. - thedowd, on 10/17/2009, -3/+38I really don't get the hate. I use a mac... oh and Windows 7 and various flavors of *nix. The "packaging" of vista and 7 I think are quite well done, better then the boring papersleeve boxes that mac products come in. That being said, I don't think the OS is really on topic for this, guys.
- AlienMushroom, on 10/17/2009, -2/+37I know, I know. You just wanna tell people that you hate Windows.
- doctordbx, on 10/17/2009, -1/+30Actually, from a brand evolution perspective, it's quite interesting to see it go through the changes.
Kind of like looking at photos of your kid growing up. - cyssero, on 10/18/2009, -0/+28Windows 95 was great, huge box and the game Hover! rocked. The "Windows 95 Starts Here" CD was cool too, it kept asking me 'where I want to go today' and insisted that the possibilities were unlimited.
- kreatre2007, on 10/17/2009, -1/+29It's interesting how packaging design has changed over the years. I remember buying versions of Mac OS X that came in huge boxes. Now, the boxes are barely larger in width than the diameter of a DVD, and the disks are inside paper sleeves. There really is no reason for software to come in a box that is much larger than the disks inside unless there is some kind of manual included that would obviously need a bigger box.
- douglasr007, on 10/17/2009, -0/+24did you just say Web 3.0?
- chingy1788, on 10/18/2009, -1/+23I tried to put it in my comp's floppy drive...
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -8/+271) What sucks? The packaging, or Windows itself? and
2) Since you probably mean the latter, can you actually back up your claims?
What I hate about fanboys in general is that they either offer zero evidence backing up their case, give extremely isolated cases of bad incidences, or stress the same argument over and over again (PCs get too much viruses but Macs don't, or Macs are way too overpriced) - jsvb1977, on 10/17/2009, -0/+18Yes, yes he did. Users of Apple products have access to the new and improved internet that came packaged with Snow Leopard. It's called iWeb and features web 3.0.
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -4/+20As did the OS itself with the exception of ME. Every other was an improvement over the previus version. Even Vista.
- therightclique, on 10/18/2009, -1/+16I agree that they aren't intuitive, but if you had to Google it, something is wrong upstairs.
- raymon9, on 10/18/2009, -0/+12Yeah uh.. had me a little confused too.. *minimizes piratebay tab*
- jsvb1977, on 10/18/2009, -1/+12because i only have one license for windows 7.
- whiteyMcBrown, on 10/18/2009, -0/+10Win 7 Box is pretty hot. I gotta say it.
- GreatDrok, on 10/18/2009, -0/+10Exactly. In fact these days it should be preferable to just buy the ISO image and key off the web and burn it to a disc yourself if you feel the need to have a physical copy. I did that with Photoshop Elements a while back. Never did burn it to disc, just kept the image and key around.
- ThanatosST, on 10/18/2009, -1/+11I put the iso for the RC onto a flash drive and installed it from that as I didn't have any DVDs to burn it to. I think it also installs faster that way, as it could read from the flash drive faster than it can a DVD.
- jwdav, on 10/17/2009, -1/+11Adobe has had 10 years to ditch carbon, and over 2 years to deal with Snow Leopard. Apple does not carry the entire blame for Adobe, or any other third party software issues.
- PleaseJustDie, on 10/18/2009, -0/+9The reason for the bigger box was to lesson theft, since its harder to pocket a huge box than it is to pocket a CD. The boxes for computer products shrunk in the last few years because studies showed people just opened the box and took the media out to steal it, so there was no point in a huge box anyway. I guess after a few years and broadband and torrents stealing software from the store no longer really takes place, why risk getting caught at the store when your neighborhood torrent site is much easier which could be another reason for the box shrinkage.
- ryryindo, on 10/17/2009, -2/+11Smart Design did the Vista packaging:
http://www.smartdesignworldwide.com/work/project.p ...
anyone know any other firms who were hired to design the packaging? - PCRepairman, on 10/18/2009, -1/+10Every single one of those covers brings back memories.
- vagitoe, on 10/18/2009, -1/+10The windows 9 box will just be a cardboard box with a 9 sharpied onto it.
- netneutrality, on 10/18/2009, -2/+10NT still has the best box image.
- cyssero, on 10/18/2009, -1/+9Sadly, I had the same problem. Not once, but twice. Second time I forgot to remote the plastic sticky tab that kept the middle bit secured. As cool as the Vista box is I struggled to open it.
- jakem1, on 10/17/2009, -0/+8Agreed although Microsoft packaging used to include numerous floppy disks and great big manuals. The Office 95/97 boxes were huge and stuffed full of books.
- ThanatosST, on 10/18/2009, -2/+10I nearly broke the damn packaging before I figured it out. It is rather cool though.
- KMartSheriff, on 10/18/2009, -3/+11Thank you.
We get it TechRader, you wrote this article to hate on Microsoft. - FredFredrickson, on 10/20/2009, -0/+8They make about as much sense as Tiger, Jaguar, Leopard, and Snow Leopard.
- jsvb1977, on 10/17/2009, -0/+8yep. a total harmony of operating systems. one performs a task better than the others and so on and so forth. i, too, come from a mixed home. Snow Leopard, XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Ubuntu. They all have their place.
- chris8535, on 10/18/2009, -0/+7I still think Windows 2000 was the greatest OS upgrade ever made for the PC. It worked on older computers, made them faster and added features. NTFS was a great step forward in computing.
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -2/+9Lol @ Slow Leopard. I don't know if thats intentional, but thats funny.
- JekJob, on 10/18/2009, -0/+7I'm pretty sure there were instructions on the box telling you how to open it....
- Schmich, on 10/17/2009, -9/+16As much as I agree, I find people complaining about environmentalists complaining just as annoying.
Now about the design I prefer the Vista one over the Windows 7. - netneutrality, on 10/18/2009, -0/+7Buried for "sleek web 3.0 looking icon".
- kreatre2007, on 10/18/2009, -0/+7You still have to have a bootable volume from which to do the install. I think distributing software on DVDs will be around for a while -- at least with major OS's.
- abhiroop, on 10/18/2009, -3/+10Not true. You can order a free CD from canonical and you get the latest Ubuntu in fairly decent packaging.
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -0/+6UV coating uses petroleum as well.
- ozmbie, on 10/18/2009, -1/+7Every new design is getting simpler.
Is the Windows 8 box going to be blank? - Ralph23, on 10/17/2009, -12/+18Go suckle your apple teet.
- GreatDrok, on 10/18/2009, -0/+6I doubt the DVD would be any more likely to break than any other packaging. Apple made a good job of making sure the disc is flat with no pressure points on the surface and the cardboard is quite stiff. Apple stated that they were making efforts to reduce the amount of packaging. It is interesting to look at the box my old iBook G4 came in compared with those they ship the new MacBooks in which must be half as thick.
- TyIzaeL, on 10/18/2009, -1/+6The regular BitTorrent client? Seriously?
- bcassner, on 10/18/2009, -1/+6Personally I liked the NT Workstation box. Although I prefer all the boxes up to 3.x as they still had a manual included in the box instead of online help that always seems to take me to where I don't get an answer.
- explodingzebras, on 10/18/2009, -0/+5*rimshot*
- jsvb1977, on 10/18/2009, -0/+5wow.
- kspanks04, on 10/18/2009, -0/+5Either way, most people aren't tossing their Windows os packaging in the landfill every day. Who cares if its green or not, software packaging material probably factors 0.000001% in the decision making process of most normal humans.
