If they didn't want to lose money, they wouldn't have gone into the console war, they lost 2 billion $ with the first Xbox. However, Microsoft already said it was a long term project. They know they have more money than their competitors, even if they lose money, in one, two, maybe three generations, they will be the only survivors.

Yes, waiting and/or testing the device for slightly longer could have helped reliability, but what would their sales have looked like if they had waited for Sony and Nintendo to release their competing products? Kinda bad for buyers who have busted Xboxes, but a pretty good deal for Microsoft. Even if they lose money on replacement Xboxes, the Xboxes are still in people's homes, so games will continue to sell.

Hell, being able to do so was one of the major reasons I went out and bought a PS3. That and it also happens to have a PS2 inside, which I never had. I don't understand why everyone hates on the Blu-ray. I think it's fantastic.

A console does me no good when it's always "out for repair" even if the repairs are free.

Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences the three Red Rings will now be covered by a three year warranty from the date of purchase. If your HD or DVD drive go bad that is still covered by the 1 year original warranty. Dugg down for inaccuracy.

What would have instilled confidence in me is if they'd been forthright and open as soon as they were aware of the problem, or even better, not rushed the thing out to market before it was tested.
Instead, for nearly two years, they've tried to keep an obvious design issue under wraps. They would claim the defect rate was a normal 3 - 5%, and that we're only hearing from the vocal minority with broken systems--that most consumers were happy with their XBoxes.
It took them nearly a year before they even extended the warranty, and even then, that was only for a small subset of systems (those manufactured in the first couple of months). All the while, they continued to downplay and minimize the story, even as message boards filled up with story upon story about the red ring of death.
Finally, we hear from Gamestop that the failure rate is something closer to 20-30%. And shortly after wards, Microsoft finally opens up...sort of. They've extended the warranty for certain failures only (the red ring of death). That pretty much confirms a design problem. I'm sorry--I mean improvement! This weeks press release reeked of spin... it wasn't a design *problem*, but several design *improvements* they've made. See? It's all sunshine and flowers in XBox land!
The whole time, their focus has been on protecting their image first, and trying to keep the problem under wraps. Only when complaints became unbearable did they finally take visible action--and then, only enough to keep appearances up. That hardly instills consumer confidence.
Maybe their gamble has paid off in the short term. I have doubts about that.
Their reputation for quality design has taken a beating in the mean time, and that will be much harder to recover. What I *do* know is that when the next XBox comes out, I'm going to be VERY wary about the first wave of consoles. Still I invested in one of those 512mb memory cards to save my games on, I don't want to lose all my profiles and game saves just because Microsoft focused more on security than reliability with the 360.
