- shoppingkart, on 01/15/2009, -6/+63Why was Vista (6.0) afraid of 7? Because 7-8-9!
- mmcgrath, on 01/15/2009, -5/+55"Right-click an empty part of the desktop, for instance, and you'll find a menu entry to set your screen resolution. No need to go browsing through the display settings any more."
Am I the only one who sets their resolution to their lcd's suggested natural setting and then never touches it? - sanderton, on 01/14/2009, -2/+48Just got Windows 7 going on an Asus EEE PC 900 netbook and it works great. Try that with Vista. I have a good feeling about this one.
- mlbwebdesign, on 01/15/2009, -0/+41Good list....and Windows 7 has been good so far.
Optimism on Digg? What is this world coming to? - roxgod666, on 01/15/2009, -1/+28This is why the people who say it's just another service pack are retarded.
- Raz4Life, on 01/15/2009, -1/+23It's handy if you, say, bring your laptop somewhere and hook it up to an external display.
- Snowknight26, on 01/15/2009, -0/+19A better list: http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/archive/2009/01/12/the- ...
- estate, on 01/15/2009, -0/+18windows + alt + [left arrow] = throw window to left monitor
windows + alt + [right arrow] = throw window to right monitor - MattQC, on 01/15/2009, -2/+12Who would have thought that you could run an 8 years old OS on a new notebook..
- twiztidsinz, on 01/15/2009, -3/+11Why don't you go ahead and stick your head back up your ass... it's not fully cooked yet.
- mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -0/+7Cool Windows 7 Tip # 2 :
" Internet Explorer ... you probably won't want its icon permanently displayed on the taskbar. Right-click the icon, select "Unpin this program from the taskbar", then go install Firefox, instead." - JustinHopewell, on 01/15/2009, -2/+8I'm running on a giant room sized computer that takes punch cards so fast, it'd make your head explode. Actually, there's a lot of radiation coming out of this thing, so that's a real possibility. I've made a huge mistake.
- Murdats, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6I am liking that this is inbuilt now and don't need to use ultramon to do it for me.
- elambing, on 01/15/2009, -1/+7no not really... what do you do all day?
- griffeycom, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5I'm a heavy Media Center User. I have been getting OTA HD Signals since I moved to a big metro area and I've used MC Starting with XP MCE. Media Center in 7.0 is amazing! It organizes my Stations much better than Vista did (Giving Digital channels .1 or .2 on top of the standard analog channel). The guide also lists more channels that I didn't know I normally picked up. I haven't used much more than that, but I absolutely love the new Media Center it looks a ton better and functions much better as well!
- mmcgrath, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5Why on earth would you say "*****" in reference to an operating system article online? Did you think others would read it and find it amusing or perhaps laugh? It's not funny.

- andyd273, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4For some reason with Vista (and winxp occasionally) some games will change the resolution, and not put it back when they exit. It's very annoying.
It would be nice if Win7 resolves this, but if not, this could be a nice feature - Murdats, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4this may not be a bad idea, vista got a lot of flack over its beta not being perfect, and a lot of those complaints entered the public conciseness before it was even released, and then stayed there, prime for apple to prey upon.
- Beerduck, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Have you ever heard about the concept of beta-testing? Of course it's not fully cooked but that doesn't mean that it doesn't work.
It's not without bugs but it's working surprisingly great for a beta. - FutureGuy, on 01/15/2009, -3/+7And I run DOS, the speed is amazing, you should try it.
/s - JoelJ, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3Oh, you use Linux?
- BugMeNot2, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3no u
- Elranzer, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3Any article about Windows 7 (or criticism of Vista) ignites the flamiest of Microsoft fanboys to come out of their holes.
ZOMBIE MODE: "Do not criticize Windows 7. It is is perfect, even in beta. To criticize Windows 7 is unAmerican, and if you do, the terrorists win." - Beerduck, on 01/15/2009, -2/+5Go bitch somewhere else, macboy.
- customer, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3Bwhahahahahaha!
- dandonia, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3If I am making a program, I tend to check what it looks like in a different resolution. I don't know if it's the same for webdevelopers or not.
On a seperate not - tip 6 seems like something needed because Microsoft have ***** up again. If the majority of people go buy an exteranl drive or plug in a new mp3 player and it doesn't show up - they will assume the drive is broken. It is daft idea's like this that have people hating on the system - I hope they fix it before the release. - musntSurfatWork, on 01/15/2009, -1/+4I'm a zookeeper on a remote uncharted island, and if you think a million monkeys that can type randomly to create shakespeare quotes, you should see the weather simulator I've compiled simply by giving each one an abacus strung with various sized coconuts.
What's this windows everyone speaks of, is it something I use to peer outside? - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+4And why would Microsoft pay people to point out that Windows is behind the competition?
- sinembarg0, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2It wasn't, numbers are not sentient, thus are incapable of feeling fear.
However, 7 > 6. - gfxlonghorn, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2Keywords: "going to". Who says you HAVE to buy it?
- skunks, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2One thing I've noticed is it's more game friendly. I installed COD 1 to test the backward compatibility and it worked like a charm. No more of that annoying "enable XP SP1 support" and having to give games administrative rights to run them.
- roxgod666, on 01/15/2009, -1/+3I like my OS medium rare.
- dandonia, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2It's not helpful in anyway shape or form.
- LittleDas, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2I've been using it as the primary operating system on my Mac Mini for a couple days now and I have to say I'm enjoying it. Particularly the aero preview thing. That's awesome.
- h00ligan, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2I've got it running on a 1000h and it's great... I too have a good feeling.. let's hope they don't eff it up before final.
people talk about why bother changing xp... it's so dated.. i remember the same arguments about 98..at some point you want to look at a computer like it was built this decade.. and xp barely meets that.
In fairness, it really is a vista service pack. They need to seriously evaluate gifting upgrades to those who bought vista.. this is what vista should have been. - RadiatedAnt, on 01/15/2009, -2/+4windoze, how ever did you come up with that? someone get this guy a job as a writer.
- pyrates, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2If u tried it in parallels, you're missing out on all the new features that were added to aero. Run it natively and you'll see the difference.
- ray73864, on 01/15/2009, -1/+3actually, interestingly enough both Vista and 7 have automatic external display/projector detection and can configure the external output to go out using that display devices natural resolution.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 01/15/2009, -1/+3People are digging you down because they are in denial.
- Beerduck, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2Thank you. You just made my day :D
- Beerduck, on 01/15/2009, -1/+3Yeah, like what XP (5.1) was to 2000 (5.0), except it wasn't really that simple.
If 7 was just Vista with a few tweaks then everything would work straight out of the box. There shouldn't be any incompatibilities, but there is. They've done quite a lot of work on it to make it lighter and more usable. - Charklii, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1That's my hotkey to go next/previous track on Foobar :o Man, a habit like that will take some time to get used to changing.. I guess I'll just be glad I only have one monitor for now :s
- pr0lixity, on 01/15/2009, -1/+2nvm. I guess that was only for openoffice... sigh...
- mrBitch, on 01/16/2009, -1/+2@ ray73864 RE: "... interestingly enough both Vista and 7 have automatic external display/projector detection and can configure the external output to go out using that display devices natural resolution."
You're right, but when we tried this feature out on one of our Vista work stations with a new Samsung LCD monitor it didn't quite work out that well.
Vista defaulted to 640x480 and would not detect the Samsung LCD's native resolution.
We had to download a driver from Samsung that then allowed Vista to correctly detect the new Samsung LCD.
I plugged in a 2 year old MacBook into the same Samsung LCD and it detected and configured the LCD as a second desktop within less than 2 seconds... - mrBitch, on 01/16/2009, -0/+1@ Elranzer RE: " They're just doing what Linux and Mac OS X already do."
Nope, I think you just made that up. As soon as I plug in an empty external USB drive in, OSX detected it and it displays as a mounted drive on the desktop. - customer, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1I didn't really find that to be a great tip or tweak either.
- JesseRuth89, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1SlyFox makes a program called Virtual CloneDrive, It seems to work with windows 7 and its free
- pcgeek101, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Try Alcohol 52% ... mount ISOs for free.
- MonkeyFit, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Tab preview support in firefox will most likely depend upon Firefox taking the initiative. Programs can do all sorts of things with the previews, they just have to enable such functionality.
