- DarkSenay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Talk about a site that sold out....
- Valence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yawn. It doesn't matter. LinuxToday's stories will predominantly be for current Linux users and free software proponents. The sections, after all, are things like "Developer", "High Performance", and "Infrastructure". This isn't going to affect Linux proselytization very much since the primary audience is not new Linux users.
Secondly, the "Linux Reference Center" is clearly an ad spot. I mean, is there really anyone who is unaware of Microsoft's bias? Those inclined to glean operative information from a Microsoft "study" were sold on Microsoft before they ever clicked on the link in the first place.
So, in my opinion, this is a stroke of genius. Microsoft spends money that they barely even notice on trying to link to FUD and spew about Windows over Linux, and LinuxToday uses the enemy's money to gather Linux news and give information to an audience of professionals who mostly know either where Microsoft fits into their organization already, or who don't care. It's perfect. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"ive had the same win xp install 4 3 yrs"
Wow 43 years huh?
It's just silly how we (after 20 years), are still having the same argument.
1) Windows is much easier to use
2) Windows is insecure
3) Linux is rock-solid (mostly because 1% of the market uses it)
There are positives and negatives to both, be happy and dual-boot your system. - bnolsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They've been a whore for a couple of years now.
About that time I stopped going there for news. - nomore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We are considering moving 26 locations (over 100 computers) over to Linux at work... Why should we have a very expensive yearly cost for MaCafee corporate anti-virus... it's there to fix a problem which the OS shouldn't have in the first place. Even MS have their own anti-spyware tool. That's the whole problem... patch after patch rather than a system that works from the start.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So are we taking this as Microsoft admitting linux is better, so they must use a smear campaign.
- dilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Must be MS sponsored with headlines like:
"RadioShack Saves Millions of Dollars by Choosing Windows Over Linux"
"Rayovac Chooses Windows Over Linux for Lower Cost of Ownership, Less Risk"
"Theater Chain Selects Windows XP Embedded Over Linux, Significantly Reduces TCO"
"Independent Study Shows that Windows Servers Recover Faster from Security Attacks than Linux Servers"
Yeah, right. And pigs fly, hell just froze over and monkeys came out of my butt. - pampusik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow. Linux Today is nailing their own coffin together.
- MadChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is ancient news, but it needs to be spread more. Make the ad space on LT worth nothing.
- brandon_w, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6trekkie711 : I suppose using good punctuation and grammar are too much of a "pain in the ass" as well? The way I see things, Windows might be compared to your comment - it gets the job done, but it lacks refinement. Linux (Like good grammar), on the other hand, takes longer, and may take more effort, but in the end, results in a better end product.
:D - windwaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks like Linux is the only winner here. Both MS and linuxtoday lose.
- pronouncable, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9wow, not one dollar sign. i'm impressed.
- acidrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow.
- jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Lol, Microsoft. Stick to making game consoles.
Oh wait, you can't even get developer support.
Stick to making keyboards and mice. Those are good. - lunamatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lol. This is so ironic. I bet the guys at Linux Today just laughs all the way to the bank.
And anyone not recognizing the ads as standard FUD deserves to waste their money on buying children`s toys from Microsoft. - aetas-nex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Just wondering, but how do you save money by switching from M$ to Linu¢?"
linux is free, microsoft is not duh.. - nomore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...and this advert tells me that MS are worried about the problems they are having. Even one of the quotes they have says "corporate enterprises rate Windows security nearly on par with comparable Linux networks.".
Now, considering that MS have complete control over their OS, it is shocking to think how bad their design really is. - mentor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What exactly does dry on software mean?
I mean, if you're complaining about the volume of software...the latest Debian release has about 13GiB of software in 13,000 packages... - cwcentral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Editor's Note: Google May Hold Big Key to Desktop Linux"
I love it, Microsoft's going all out to spread FUD on Linux in creative ways. And they are throwing Google into the mix. Google has become a brand where they've created the perception that "Winows is available on Google!" vs. the reverse. That's how Google is breaking through the windows firewall and making the non-technical user think outside the Microsoft box. Push Google away from that perception by "pairing it with Linux" and it becomes a kernel battle again such that MS has a better (i.e. larger) marketing team.
With Google Pack, we now have a non-MS sourced, microsoft distro fellas--brillant. - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Holy crap! That's pretty lame.
- rosemat2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3sad for selling out, but haha dumbass microsoft, that looks way to fixed for anyone to take seriously.
- jmonw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dugg. What a freaking horrible site.
- masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4..."I have[n't] reinstalled windows 2 for years, havent had a virus or any spyware either. maybe the problem isnt windows...maybe its the user"...
Maybe your right! Maybe... if all your do is open your browser once a day, go to hotmail, then close your browser - maybe the problem isn't Windows at all. - cheeseron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Fedora and XP, and Fedora is a million times better for me to use. Plus, it looks better.
- thisdude415, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4£inuxtoday.com is Sponsored by Micro$oft

Yeah. Me too. I just removed their rss feed. They just went over the line and I have to punish them. - bluestripes0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2jesus christ, how low can microsoft go?
- tpodr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What's all this talk about OSes, eh? Why, in my day, we had to load our programs one byte at time on the front panel toggle switches. Then, if you got it right, just load the starting address into the PC register and off you went...
Operating systems are for sissy girls. - mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"i suspect the issue is between the keyboard and the chair ;)"
That's funny. I've always suspected it might because Windows is designed to let any other machine you're connected to via the internet install anything they want on your computer without your permission and there is not built-in option to prevent this. That's the crappiest security there ever was - it is no security at all.
And that if users would quit browsing porn sites comments..... geeze, what species are you people? That's what a helluva lot of people on the internet use it for. And if you go to these sites with an OS other than Windows, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to getting spyware or viruses.
"I get tired of hearing people say Linux is hard to install or its not user friendly or its only on 1% of the computers in the world."
Me too. Most distros are way easier to install than Windows XP; I know, because I've had to reinstall Windows for people whose computers broke. Or rather, their OS broke, namely Windows. Like many users, they thought if Windows wasn't working their computer was screwed up, but there was actually nothing wrong with the computer itself. And 1% Please, if it has such a tiny market share how come there are so many busy Linux sites out there? How come we are seeing this same old flamefest everywhere if there are so few Linux users?
I will say that Windows is more newbie friendly than most distros of Linux, but there are several that are just about as easy to use as Windows; my fave of the newbie-friendly distros is Xandros, but there are others (the best-known of which is Linspire, which I don't actually recommend, but some folks love it).
There's one reason is on top - the programs and hardware that are made to run only with Windows. Cedega and Crossover have come a long way, but they still can't run everything that was desgined only for Windows. Almost everyone I know who runs Windows (and that's quite a lot) use it for that reason. Even the folks who can afford to get a Mac won't because their favorite programs won't run on a Mac. No matter how much FUD MS spews or how much Gates promises Vista will rock, it always come down to this issue. If software and hardware companies were forced to make a development kit for developers who wanted to adapt their program to another OS the days of Windows would truly be numbered. But of course, as Microsoft is such a powerful compnay, that will never happen. - kungPow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's been this way since 2004. Google for "linux reference center".
Apparently it's showed up at linuxplanet too, which is run by the same people,
along with justlinux, apachetoday, phpbuilder, etc.
None of the stories on any of those sites are original, it's just a collection of links to other sites that have the real news. Basically just like most other seo/spam websites. - muhgcee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I ***** hate advertisements.
- MicahC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's pretty funny. Talk about obvious sell-outs.
- Lebrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just deleted them from my bookmarks and RSS reader
- soleblazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is really old news.

In this link the founder/creator of Linux Today calls for the boycott of it for just this reason, and its from June 2004...so nothing new here. - drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for how sick it made me feel.
- Stelmate, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7What a bunch of crap, I love how "Microsoft" employees write articles on how microsoft is better. Than explain to me why, WHEN I ran windows I had to do a complete reinstall every 3-5 months because their filesystem is terrible and I always had a virus on my machine not even the best anti-virus software would detect? *Blah* Microsoft is for gamers, its a nice toy, but it just doesn't get the job done. I think their scared is why they posted all that bogus crap on the linux website.
- cyberrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Debian stable has 17,000 packages now, not 13,000.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jnash: TCO. It costs more to support Linux than Windows.
Can you actually substantiate that? The initial software costs of a Windows system will pay for at least two years of full support for a Linux system.
The ongoing maintenance of a properly configured Linux system is trivially easy, unlike a Windows system which will require complete reinstallation every so often. Maintenance costs for a Linux system are thus MUCH lower.
Any TCO survey which concludes that "Windows is cheaper" is sponsored by Microsoft (and is therefore lying) or is just plain wrong. - topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Just wondering, but how do you save money by switching from M$ to Linu¢?"
Dude, there have been no TCO papers that are NOT funded my M$ that say Windows is cheaper. Perhaps you heard aboud XP Home support ending Dec of this year, wtf are all those users supposed to do? Also, to the "my XP runs just fine w/ only a few free ant spyware apps" guys: fair enough (though you failed to mention your Norton), but can you guys seriously think that puts you in the majority? No way! The "average" (read: non-techie) person's pc has about four search bars installed along with gator or weatherbug. This is because these things are bundled w/ needed software. When Acrobat Reader installs by default so does Yahoo crap, etc, etc. Pretending there is no problem because you are savvy enough to often dodge it in NO way negates the actual problem... - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please you people, stop arguing about which OS is better. Every OS has pros and cons. I dual-boot with XP and Ubuntu, and I love them both to death. I use Windows for the common stuff, like music, games, Internet, etc. I'm learning C++, so I use Linux for programming. It compiles much faster than Windows. I've only had one Kernel Panic, and it was caused by a very unstable SMP kernel (for Hyper-Threading). Windows is stable and fast, and so is Linux. But sometimes X crashes on me unexpectedly, and this isn't just on Ubuntu. But it's probably caused by me being stupid. I started using it last summer, so it's probably just my own stupidity. And for those of you who think Linux is too hard, Linux is _not_ hard. Sure, you'll have to use the terminal every now and then, but it's not as scary as it looks. Downloading something, let's say XMMS, is as easy as opening a terminal and typing "sudo apt-get install xmms". Or you could always use some sort of graphical program, like Synaptic. It really isn't hard. When I first tried Linux I was confused as all hell, I had no idea what I was doing. My first distro was Ubuntu, which was an okay choice at the time. I was clueless. I didn't know the difference between an RPM and a DEB, and I thought Windows EXE's could run on Linux. If you're like that, you should really try out Xandros. That's what really got me to understand Linux. It made everything clear to me. I downloaded and installed the Open Circulation Edition, which is free via BitTorrent. It's very Windowsy, but it's perfect for the newbies. It's Debian-based, but Xandros Networks uses Alien to install RPMs. It's very easy. Once you think you're ready to move on, download something like Ubuntu or Mandriva. They're relatively easy to use, and very functional. Buy a book on Linux if you need to. Experiment. That's usually the best way to learn. If you ***** something up, well, now you know not to do that again. You'll get the hang of it. And trust me, I'm a 14 year old girl, and if I can do it, I think you can. :)
- Mwd500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If its real then Microsoft are idiots and getting dumber by the day
- Digital.Totem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I knew M$ was evil, but I didn't know they had a sense of humor.
- foohookups311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just redid my machine with a dual boot WinXp/Ubuntu Linux. I can't tell you how many times i had to load a driver for this or a driver for that on the WinXp OS and then the Linux distro worked flawlessly with a lot of the things the XP needed a driver for. Although I must say there are somethings I am having trouble with on the Linux end such as movie playback in totem. That is probably due to my lack of experience with Linux though.
- usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I get tired of hearing people say Linux is hard to install or its not user friendly or its only on 1% of the computers in the world. Why don't you get your head out of your ass and do some research before posting some BS inaccurate information.
Most of you who think this way are (Hell I'm lost for words. Try a live cd and navigate around and see how easy it is. Look at the bigger companies that are using it and are switching to it. Look at the schools that are switching to it. Look at how many users there is.
I'm not sure what your smoking but you need to get off it and come back to reality. Windows sucks. And Microsoft knows this and they lie, they pay people to write these studies to make Windows look better.
Get over it, windows users are soon to be a dying breed. - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Arent there articles on digg of linux advocates doing the same thing?
- plugitin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't get me wrong, I love Linux, but that is hilarious. Those linuxtoday people are stupid. What were they thinking? That M$ would be fair players and write articles about how Linux beats Windows? NO YOU STUPIDHEADS! Think before you act, that's what my mom tells me.
- GreenSlabOfClay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No loss.
Microsoft bought garbage.
linuxtoday.com looks horrible...it hurts to look at.
Get a webmaster. - demonthises, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@LiquidPenguin
"Average users don't care about stability."
This should actually say "Average users don't care about stability as long as programs are not crashing, there are no blue screens, and files are not being corrupted." I've had to clean up "average user" windows boxes that have had the spyware, adware, and bonzie buddy because their boxes were crashing and blue screening and running slow as hell. Once a user loses stability it becomes an issue.
"They want compatibility and feature bloat."
Everyone want compatibility. I would love to see Windows having resierfs and ext2 support, but that's not going to happen. As for "feature bloat," that's the problem with closed source. Not all closed source, but most suffer from this. The average user does not need all of those fecal bytes (aka crap). Most users don't use 1/20th of the "features" of MS Office (or OpenOffice).
"do you really think they're going to care about details like security or stability?"
Only when security and stability become a problem will the average user care about them. And eventually both become problems.
"... quit treating Linux like it's the holy grail of OSes."
That is yet to be determined. There are other OSes out there (bsd) that may prove to be "the holy grail of OSes" because they only gathered a smaller following compared to linux. Linux still has a way to go, but the FOSS users and the Linux commercial interests could pull Linux or Unix in general ahead of Windows. - cwcentral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"1) Windows is much easier to use
2) Windows is insecure
3) Linux is rock-solid (mostly because 1% of the market uses it)"
and
4) Linux is based on Unix, where pretty much any *nix is used in (and the preferred) more mission critical systems in the world.
That's why is loses in (1)--harder to use, cause *nix technology compromises are more compromises than market-based decisions, hence inherently more complex. Would you want your heart to be a simple, insecure, buggy and user friendly (it's not user friendly BTW). - TheBurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What are some alternatives for Linux news?
