- oblique63, on 11/19/2008, -2/+19umm... wouldn't linux users be more likely to use android?
you know, the one with the whole 'open source' thing and all... - weizbox, on 11/19/2008, -3/+12Thats what I did... besides, I have a few friends with the iPhone, and they end up complaining a lot about it from the touchscreen typing to the white screen of death :/
- arcticblue, on 11/19/2008, -0/+5"More importantly the people who make gtkpod also supply libgpod which is used in other software. "
Exactly the reason I appreciate there hard work so much. And you're right, it does it's job well. IIRC, it was the only program that could get video on to my 5g iPod for a while until some other programs caught up with the times. - paulsmith288, on 11/19/2008, -0/+5it isn't the nicest interface , but does the job. More importantly the people who make gtkpod also supply libgpod which is used in other software.
- SteveMax, on 11/19/2008, -0/+5Android != G1.
The G1 is a phone using Android that doesn't have a 3.5mm jack.
Android is an OS that doesn't care if the phone has a 2.5, 3.5, USB or whatever headphone jack if there is a driver for it.
Please, don't mix the two of them. It's the same as me saying that Windows has no USB because the first Windows compuer I saw didn't have one, only serial/parallel/AT. - louiebaur, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4That is exactly what I was thinking, time for both of us to get with the times!
- strategy, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4I downloaded it back when it was free. it adds flexibility I never thought I'd have with my touch without jailbreaking it. as far as I've tested it, the description is completely accurate. great app.
- MaxHeadroom120, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4I use Air Sharing and it works very well. I copy PDF's over and can view and use them all day. I don't use M$ office so I can not say how well it works with that... Air Sharing is a nice app.
- jggube, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4Air Sharing looks like a promising app, anyone got a chance to play around with this?
- GOVATENT, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3SteveMax: Thank You. It seems the whole world things the two are the same. I just bought the g1 and it comes with the adapter. Then again I don't use my cell phone to play music as I prefer a HD mp3 player. (Namely my 30 gb ipod runing rockbox)
- paulsmith288, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3"Sadly, GTKPod and Amarok cannot yet transfer files on an iPhone with the 2.x firmware upgrade"
I've got a jailbroken iphone - I wish amarok and/or gtk pod worked with the new firmware. Wireless sync baby!
As a result I rely upon dtunes which plays mp3s from the iphone file system. It isn't a bad program - but just a little sluggish compared to the native media player app. If it wasn't for that my iphone would be collecting dust. (Well maybe - safari is worth using it alone) - MichaelMelen, on 11/19/2008, -2/+5iPhone + Linux = Abyss!
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 11/19/2008, -1/+4Yes, Android, or a Blackberry. I know it's locked down significantly, but for most file operations it's all just drag-n-drop. Linux support is decent, too. Barry works fairly well, and to be honest all I worry about is file transfers between the PC and the device (which can be done even lacking a driver) and charging the device, which seems to work most of the time with Linux machines. If not, there's bcharge.
Also, for those of you wanting an iPod killer, I have to complain that Android doesn't have a 3.5mm jack. I know, you can use a dongle, but I'd rather just be able to plug in my phones, and be done with it.
Now that Apple's supposedly implemented new iPodDB hashes, well, Linux users should just forget about Apple devices for now, and not support their evil ways. :)
/is a Linux user who loves her Blackberry VERY much. - solarwind24, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Ummm... can we stop applying labels to people based on what operating system they use?
Hey! That one uses windows so he must be a total knob! And he uses Linux so he MUST have an android based phone!
I know plenty of Linux users who use iPhones and all sorts of other closed-source apps. - zwaldowski, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2For iTunes sync, I would highly recommend grabbing a copy of TinyXP off of TPB and using it to create an XP virtual machine via VirtualBox. Simply set its memory to 256 MB and it runs very smoothly. Use VirtualBox's shared folders function, map an XP network drive to \vboxsvr and you have an instant link to whatever folder you choose in Ubuntu. Syncs flawlessly with an iPod Touch; I'm going to use it when my iPhone 2G comes this Saturday.
- missingnoh4x, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Well, I made the mistake of buying an iPod Touch, because I assumed gtkpod would work with it like it did for previous models. But instead I can't even mount the ***** filesystem because Apple has kept ***** even more obfuscated. Why the hell do they go out of their way to shut out Linux users? If you aren't going to put out a Linux version of iTunes, open up the specifications for syncing media so we can get music ourselves.
- shaherazad, on 11/19/2008, -2/+3Yeah, seems like a strange dichotomy between paying for style and getting substance for free.
- paulsmith288, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1agreed - I didn't think apple would let anything like that happen - but they did and works great with ubuntu.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Yes, but is there currently any other phone that runs Android? That's not a rhetorical question, I really don't know and cannot be bothered to check. :P
- godsdead, on 11/19/2008, -2/+3Amazing +1 digg
- arcticblue, on 11/19/2008, -1/+2People still use gtkpod? I appreciate the work the developers have done with getting ipod syncing working, but man....that interface is the opposite of intuitive (or at least it was the last time I used it).
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -4/+3Don't have an iPhone yet, but it seems to be supported by so many people and 3rd parties that I may make the leap. I'm starting to dabble in Ubuntu so this is becoming a viable option.
- nshop2, on 02/03/2009, -0/+0Nice review... I liked it.

http://www.skysol.co.uk - TehDoctor, on 11/19/2008, -7/+5Some people don't care about open source that much and just buy whatever the hell they want because they're not a bunch of mindless FSF shills with beards.
Linux users are not all a stereotype. I have an iPhone (and jailbreaking it, using Pwnplayer and sshfs work great, btw) - inactive, on 11/19/2008, -10/+2typo - "iPhone applications for the Linux user" should have read: " dickhole² "

What is Digg?
