"...instead of the far more cheeseilicious KDE or GNOME desktops." - epimer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+24FTA: "it uses the Enlightenment E17 desktop interface with a Google-centric theme instead of the far more KDE or GNOME desktops."
The far more what? - JustAboutReal, on 11/14/2007, -0/+16I say more users == more incentive for developers to port apps to linux.
If you want to stay underground with Linux, disable the GUI! - BrandonMills, on 11/15/2007, -10/+24gOS could beat Ubuntu because, as forward-thinking as Ubuntu is for Linux-minded individuals, they still hold on to ideas that need shot.
- The idea that brown is the color people want to look at all day while at work or at home. Guess what guys, Microsoft's brown zune sells for less than the others for a reason.
- Stealing the OS X dock like every other sane OS should. Aren't we past the point where we try ( and fail ) to get alternatives to work as well as the OS X style dock? Let's just Win95 this one already and put it in every operating system.
- A name for an OS that isn't 'Ubuntu'. GoogleOS or Ubuntu? Which do you think would catch on with the public faster?
Basically, Linux guys, no matter how well intentioned, utterly fail at marketing and understanding what draws the average user to a product. Your best bet? Look at Apple, and if it won't get you in legal trouble, make a clone of it.
and to those that say 'It's just a few enhancements on Ubuntu!', I have a line full of Debian users who'd like to talk to you. Pot, meet Kettle. - inactive, on 11/15/2007, -0/+14and outside of maybe MS and Apple (for obvious reasons) who would those people be?
- JasonCox, on 11/14/2007, -4/+16It has?
It makes more sense to me that Wal-Mart sold a cheapo $200 dollar PC that sold out not because it was running gOS, but because it was $200 dolllars and at Wal-Mart. - sequethin, on 11/15/2007, -1/+13linux, distro, distro named debian, distro based on distro named debian, distro based on distro based on debian... what's next?
- BrandonMills, on 11/15/2007, -1/+13A distro based on distro based on distro based on Debian, of course :)
- hockey, on 11/14/2007, -0/+11These are exactly the people I want getting into linux.
With Linux 99% of the crap they download off the internet (like naked_lindsay_lohan.exe) that clogs their computer and causes them to call all sorts of tech savvy relatives (in other words you and me) won't even run.
This is why I want them on Linux. You can't get a virus if the virus app won't even run on your architecture. - SanjayM, on 11/14/2007, -0/+10I hear they will be using technology called "The internet" by which they will transfer files from servers to the clients PC's where they are installed by a program called an "Update manager"
- TheTankengine, on 11/15/2007, -1/+10I'm not really sure what the point you are trying to make is. I guess you are saying why gOS will "beat" Ubuntu?
1) Ubuntu's theme is switching away from brown and more towards orange for the next release. It is also trivially easy to change the color scheme to anything the user desires. System -> Preferences -> Themes. I don't even see why this is important.
2) The dock isn't exactly the same, but there is only so much one can do with a dock. What are these falied alternative docks that come with Ubuntu? They don't exist. Someone could use awn or the gdesklets dock or kooldock, etc., but those are third party.
3) You are absolutely correct. People are so stupid that pronouncing a made up word is infinitely easier than pronouncing a foreign word. Clearly the name is what puts Ubuntu at a massive disadvantage.
Basically, gOS seems to be doing well, especially for a brand new distro. Everex definitely knows what draws the users to the product, and that is cheap PC + easy-to-use and intuitive OS that is very easy on the hardware. Wal-Mart sold out of the computers in stores and online, didn't they?
Apple is not the be-all-end-all of computer design. Get over yourself. - eean, on 11/14/2007, -0/+8That's more or less what the gOS founder says.
- HonoredMule, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Man, a lot of sentences in this roughshod article seem to "lose their way."
"[it uses enlightenment] instead of the far more KDE or GNOME desktops."
"[it includes typical software like] popular applications from Firefox, Skype and OpenOffice.org."
Man, I wish my desktop was more GNOME or KDE and had applications made by Firefox.
Readers have no respect for internet sources because internet authors have no respect for the medium or their readership. Does eWeek even bother to hire an editor? - sexybobo, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7XP minimum system requirements 64 MB RAM, 233MHz processor, 1.5 gig HDD
Gpc has 512MB RAM, 1.5GHz processor, 80GB HDD
I am willing to bet you can get xp to work on that pc. - phlll, on 11/14/2007, -0/+7Linux can check automagically whenever you're online.
- SkullWolf, on 11/15/2007, -1/+7gOS =/= googleOS. Stop it.
- triskele, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6Glad to see Enlightenment getting some more exposure. It's a beautiful desktop and works well on shockingly low system requirements.
- hockey, on 11/14/2007, -0/+6So this is based on Enlightenment?
That's cool but I gotta ask in all seriousness. Is E17 EVER going to be officially released? I considered Enlightenment as a desktop and E17 looks awesome but D17 has been in development for what seems like forever. . . - NeMoD, on 11/14/2007, -3/+8I like seeing pictures
- Kidman13, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5It looks awesome. Just hoping it works as good as it looks.
- dcherryholmes, on 11/14/2007, -1/+6When the gov't came knocking one company said "here ya go" and the other said "piss off." There may be equivalent potential for evil but, at least for now, there appears to be very different captains at the helm.
- eean, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5popular
- init100, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4So in other words, people should stay on Windows so that you can live off your tech support job?
- archiesteel, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Do you really believe you can't use USB2 external storage with Linux? If so, you should consider taking your head out of your own ass.
- wispygalaxy, on 11/14/2007, -2/+6Sarcasm isn't always funny.
- pak314, on 11/14/2007, -1/+4Here is the website: http://www.thinkgos.com/
- hockey, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3D17 not E17
- arizonagroove, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Instead of the far more KDE or GNOME like KDE or GNOME desktops.
- littleodie914, on 11/14/2007, -4/+7I actually installed gOS on my PC last weekend, and I wasn't very impressed. The UI is pretty lacking compared to other distros, like Ubuntu and Fedora 8, and I found it buggy in a few cases.
It's a good idea, but not quite ready for mass adoption. - inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Another good article on this http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/linux/everex-200-linux- ...
- MajorHertz, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Well then how do people like us make money off of tech support? I'd say most of my tech support calls are caused by people calling about malware and viruses.
- polyGone, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3You do realize these people aren't going to want high-end applications. They would have bought a high-end machine. Most of these users probably couldn't tell the difference anyway. Not knocking them.....but they just want to surf the net and do some office stuff. Linux comes with just about everything you'd need. Hell, you could even have a full out 3d pipeline with Autodesk.
- brentaun, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3What are you saying exactly? "I'm not sure how many pompous Linux geeks like me would want Wal-Mart rednecks joining our ranks." ?
Is that it? - RedS0x, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Comment spam much? Not like I'm helping much, though...
>.> - inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3sudo init 3
- timla, on 11/14/2007, -3/+5Everex is putting themselves in a postion to be aquired by google, justmy 2 cents
- heystoopid, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Interesting given that Walmart's web site is now saying TC2502 is "out of stock on line" and only available in a limited number of stores and are are offering the more expensive Everest GC3502. Interestingly , a similar spec. machine which costs 50% more , double the memory to 1 gigabyte but with Windows Vista Home Basic in it's place complete with that sub standard useless Norton Internet Security crap , go figure !
With apologies to Nelson Muntz in the "Simpsons" Ha! Ha!
Or is it April 1st already ? - TeacherOfHeroes, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I think that this meets the demands of a certain market segment, but I think that as linux slowly gains more and more attention and acceptance, distros with more 'classic' DEs will be adopted to target different kinds of users.
- MeneerR, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Yeah, the sort of people capable of installing a bootleg copy of XP and fix the actication, go to walmart to buy a 200 $ pc that ehm doesn't run any modern windows app. Sure. Maybe quake 1 will work? Paint Shop Pro, the original.. happy google hunting.
No seriously. 90% of the people using desktop computers, use it browse the internet. 75% runs msn, 50% or something sets up an email-client.
None of those people ever visit digg.com, except that mom from XKCD. http://xkcd.com/341/ But she's already running linux. She installed Debian on her oven, last I heard. She apt-get's her cookies. - junkyinny, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2what are Gos's minimum system requirements? i think this would be extremely popular in reviving older computers if the reqs are low.. you dont know how many win98 machines people give me and i toss them in the trash.. anything under 1gig cpu goes in the dumpster..
- Dedpoet, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I've found it difficult to make any money from tech support for quite a while, honestly. With brand new computers costing under $400 (and now $200), how can you possibly charge anyone an amount of money that makes it worth your time? Frankly, I'm getting tired of spending a Saturday fixing a friend's machine for a case of beer. Bring on gOS.
- MonkeyMCSE, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Cliff, thank you for proving to everyone who reads the article that you are, in fact, a douchebag.
- 4321234, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Not fair really good bad blame eweek for digg comments really.
- Stonekeeper, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Thanks. I choked on my food.
- siwasher, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2No what good bad blame really. Case made.
- cpanic, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Some video footage: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1600038034 ...
- RevEng, on 11/14/2007, -2/+4I'm curious, why do you say that? Scott was the first person to comment on his experience with the gPC and gOS and he actually gave several reasons for not liking it. That's a lot more convincing than saying, "I hate you."
- Jonjonr6, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Enlightenment dock
