- hartley, on 12/02/2008, -1/+34When I tried gOS for the first time I was hoping it would be like this.
Can't wait for a usable release. - inditech, on 12/02/2008, -3/+32I'm buying a go-kart
- Lemm, on 12/02/2008, -1/+22I've wanted an operating system like this for a long time now.. considering how much computer time we spend inside a web browser, I'm surprised something like this wasn't released sooner...
Here's hoping it gets used. - polyp2000, on 12/02/2008, -2/+19I really wish google would put there money behind a project like this, get it on google branded net-books and sell them by the bucket load.
N. - inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+16Hmm, would be a nice flash stick OS.
- Zybergod, on 12/02/2008, -2/+17I put on my robe and wizard hat..
- teemingvoid, on 12/02/2008, -1/+14no. read the article. don't just post.
- micha, on 12/02/2008, -1/+14WANT.
All I need is a download link. - quato, on 12/02/2008, -5/+17Another tiny piece of the global Linux domination falls into place.
- shiftyroach, on 12/02/2008, -1/+11this is why i hate digg... now quick, someone post this thread as a story

- neocreo, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9My browser/OS/mama/sportsteam is better than your browser/OS/mama/sportsteam.
- Baronvontito1, on 12/02/2008, -1/+9I accidentally the whole comment. Is this dangerous?
- adarkmethod, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8looks great, too bad its not out yet
- rhinofinger, on 12/02/2008, -1/+8This is what I wanted out of my linux boot in the first place. Fast boot browser. And everything else, but mostly that.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7Too bad it has nothing to do with cloud computing... RTFA.
- kajoob, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7Dad??
- Pete7872, on 12/02/2008, -0/+6Sounds perfect for my parents. All they ever use on my old desktop is the web browser anyway. I like how Linux is branching itself out into different types of operating systems. They need to make this system super easy to use so those who are "computer illiterate" in our lives.
- PrettyGreen, on 12/02/2008, -1/+7I'm eating perogies.
- asspants, on 12/02/2008, -1/+6negative, enlightenment wm has been around IIRC 1998.
- SteelFrog, on 12/02/2008, -0/+5gOS Cloud has not yet been released; check the site for yourself.
- thedragon4453, on 12/02/2008, -2/+7I have no idea how you are getting that from a screenshot that shows a browser window that looks a lot more like Chrome on XP and a dock.
- jrobbio, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5I think desktop PC's are massively wasteful commodities when it comes to power. I have a HTC TyTn II device with a version of Mobile Opera 9 on it, which works rather well on the small screen, whilst only using a very small amount of energy to do it (including Wi-Fi and 3G).
If the gOS cloud system could use customised BIOS settings which throttle the full performance of my machine on top of loading in seconds for the purposes of browsing, then I think we are on to a winner. - ShrimpCrackers, on 12/02/2008, -1/+5FYI: There has been this thing called dual boot. Heck you can triple boot if you like.
My desktop runs OSX86, Ubuntu Studio, and Vista. So yes, I probably could run whatever it is that you're touting, just like many diggers here. - gramophone, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4that's not the same thing...
that's a different version... - djetaine, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4I never really did understand the whole fast boot craze. "MY PC MUST BOOT IN 3 SECONDS!"
Most of my computers are on almost 100 percent of the time. This would be good for a laptop, but for a regular old pc, not needed. Just my opinion though, I realize I'm not the target demographic. - theartfuldodgr, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4Well if you had a PC that boot in 3 seconds you wouldn't need to leave it on sucking up energy when your not using it now would you? The reason I leave my PC on is because sometimes I need to run to it to use it and I can't sit there and wait for it to boot up. Now if I could just hit the power button and 3 seconds later boom I'm able to use it, I wouldn't leave it on all the time.
- FlipCoder, on 12/02/2008, -1/+4The whole comment?
- Droogie768, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3As do I, however, think of the impact on the grand scale. We are all a bit conscious about our energy use. If a computer could boot extremely fast, what purpose would it be to keep a computer turn on just so that you wouldn't have to wait on boot time?
Besides having to leave programs running, this would actually be quite helpful with energy conservation.
It's like the report recently about how much the U.S. uses from just leaving their consoles idle. Multiple how many homes have consoles along with various computers, and we all could be saving a nice pocket full of cash, and also doing a bit less impact on the enviroment. - SteelFrog, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3gOS Space is designed for MySpace users. gOS Cloud is not.
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3Linux is actually used in most of the more advanced vending machines already
- mcpotato, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3This is a cool way to run a browser in a sandbox environment by booting it in VirtualBox or an other virtualization solution.
- RobotBuddha, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3I wouldn't go so far as to call it snake oil, or call the users idiots. I am annoyed that I started on something similar before they did, but wound up too certain google's lawyers would crush even a hint of latching onto their marketing machine.
- seldon21, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Started using gOS this weekend after seeing the 3.0 update. Very nice, very clean. And so far after loading it on a low-end box and laptop it is running and doing what it needs to.
- ChayD, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Edit: Duh - wrong version. I guess Cloud is for OEMs only right now.
- haterofps3, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2We have browser only live discs, just look around they are stripped down and boot fast.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3Yeah idiots. Isn't that good for an operating system? Okay to be fair that's only gOS Space. Chen likes making a new version of gOS every season for something somewhat wonky.
- tacojohn48, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2you could just get the eye-fi card and upload straight from the camera wherever there is wifi
- ChayD, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2http://www.thinkgos.com/dgadgets.php
- SteelFrog, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2It's a separate OS; it can't simply be overlaid into Vista unless you use a virtual machine or something.
- trogdoor, on 12/02/2008, -1/+3I'd really like more specifics on things like what browser / rendering engine is used. It would take a lot to make firefox look like chrome but also a lot to get chome working well enough with wine ( I really doubt that they have natively ported chrome alone ) especially integrating local applications as tabs within the browser ( though if they are using firefox that can already be easily done with mozplugger ). Also "a few seconds" could mean a lot of things, it would be nice to have a ballpark figure for something like the eee-pc which has been made to boot to a desktop in 5 seconds ( http://lwn.net/Articles/299483/ ).
None of these questions were cleared up @ http://www.thinkgos.com/cloud.php either and it seems kind of odd that these basic details would be left out. - nofx1510, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Thats what im hopeing for. I have ubuntu eee installed right now and im not that happy with it. This os sounds like it could be extremely useful.
- grndslm, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2That laugh makes it seem like you need to lose some weight.
- Crazymaniacc, on 12/02/2008, -3/+5I dugg you all, well... most of you.
- gubin09, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1Bucket loads of laptops... creams pants
- djdavetrouble, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1More than 3 seconds is enough time for the average person to think "***** it" and instantly turn on a TV instead.
- JQP123, on 12/02/2008, -1/+2In order for "global Linux domination" to ever come about, this will have to be a major piece of it.
Linux on the *full featured desktop* is a no go. But Linux on a network appliance has lots of potential; mainly because the underlying operating system is irrelevant as long as it "just works" so why not use the one with the lowest cost. Linux tailored for one specific hardware/software setup fits the bill perfectly.
The only question in my mind is how many current full featured desktop installs will be converted to network appliance installs. My guess is around half over the next decade or so. This depends a lot on the communication infrastructure and if/when it is ever upgraded. - Meresin, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1All I do anymore is browse. I've wanted something like this for a long time. It'd go great on an MSI Wind desktop PC, which I fully intend to build anyway.
