not really, i'm more likely to ditch flash, since they ditched me... all these false promises of flash 8.5/9 for linux... until i see a product, be it alpha or beta macromedia/adobe can get *****. - Lensman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11the problem is for 8.5 player to run in a native Linux firefox ... not with wine
- lokean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10OK, that would work indeed. But I'm not that desperate to get the latest flash on my Linux box...
- Beanlover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nice workaround but I'm willing to bet the vast majority of linux users won't want to do this. I know I won't...I just don't care about flash that much. If webmasters choose to use flash > 7 then I just won't use their site. Maybe they'll care, maybe they won't.
Using this workaround would only encourage Adobe to drag their feet even more on the linux versions of these releases. - isellchickens, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4I tagged it lame too. I'm not going to run Firefox in Wine so that I can have a new version of flash.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Tagged lame...
Flash hates our troops. We can't even get a 64-bit linux version of flash 7! - ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3eww.
- barfnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i motion that we ban flash from the Internet
- prothall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is remarkably unimpressive. This is a cop-out.
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...maybe see if you can get your favorite Linux distro running on a South African Bat Dung Grub or something."
Will installing Linux on a dead badger do?
http://www.strangehorizons.com/2004/20040405/badger.shtml - mrsticks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Now that's just ignorant. For your sake I hope you're not a windows user.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe you haven't noticed the recent onslaught of Flash 8 only websites.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since browser plug-ins **must** be compiled for the same architecture as the browser, and macromedia doesn't have any 64bit plug-in - for Windows or Linux - Suse 10 must be using 32 bit FireFox with 32 bit flash (which can be achieved on any Linux install through chroot).
- localzuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It isn't really 'flash on linux' is it though? It is 'flash in firefox for windows via wine on linux' which is not really what I want to use to view websites.
- Inhibit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GNash is (aside from the horrible name) running pretty well. Just compiled up the latest version on Gentoo and it A) brings up the website flash stuff properly and B) doesn't crash my browser. Doesn't work for the interactive bits yet, but it's getting there. From what I hear the plugin interaction is a pain to get working right.
Now, that's not quite up to full plugin status yet, but they're going by leaps and bounds since the Installing Gnash article I wrote a half year or so ago.
Obligatory link to article referenced:
http://pcburn.com/help-Installing_GNU_Gnash.php - seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You must have the wrong distro. Suse 10 x64 comes with Flash player 7.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Indeed, the headline is misleading. It's a bit like saying "I can run all Linux apps on Windows" when what you can really do is take a linux VMWare image and run it with the VMWare client on a Windows machine. So, no digg.
- mariuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i had to help one coworker to test flash8 on his ubuntu machine - so that was my solution
For 64 bit machines flash can work be it with vmware player or with wine or with 32bit chroot - mrsticks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A house divided cannot stand.
We cant start bickering with each other. It works for you because you needed it, fine with me. I just hope people aren't needleessly installing wine to run firefox. That's my only concern.
Let's blame the real villian here: Macromedia - redog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Title should be x86 linux. ppc, arm, mips, etc etc are still out of luck.
- sedd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wtf. where did suse get flash 7 for x86_64? adobe doesn't acknowledge it's existence. please elaborate.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is good for looking at flash 8 sites if you have no other way... But this is not exactly convenient. Adobe needs to quit toying with us and either release Flash 8 for Linux or announce that they have no plans to do so and set us free so we can figure out an alternate strategy and forget about Flash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a web developer I want Flash 8 to work without any abnormal requirements for Linux users. Since the majority of Linux users are never going to run a Windows version of Firefox via Wine... it doesn't really offer much. I also don't want to allow Adobe any more room to slack on a real working version of the latest Flash player for Linux. They have already slacked enough as it is.
- mrsticks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Flash on linux is nice, I guess. Ive got 7 and it seems to work on most everything, so I see no reason to get wine to run firefox to run a new flash player. Seems a little reduntant, when Ive already got firefox for linux working just fine, Id hate to slow it down with wine.
I mean is anyone really doing this? And if they are, do they realize flash 7 works just fine for most things already? - dnaspydir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if this "article" can waste space (and my time), i will waste yours with a comment that says nothing worth reading as well.
- scooterfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I knew it was too good to be true once I saw the article.
Screw WINE. I run a full "installation" of XP from within my Ubuntu install by way of QEMU - flash, IE, the small handful of apps I need that absolutely will not run on anything but Windows. - xcomputerman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What be this? OMG I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD RUN WINDOWS PROGRAMS WITH WINE!
How groundbreaking and innovative. Please take this nonsense off the front page. - joewebster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I run Linux/X11/Gnome as my primary OS at work and at home.
To date I have only seen one site that required me to have Flash 8 -- and that was for a video player.
Maybe I browse the 'Marcomedia 7' part of the web? What are ALL of these sites you speak of that require 8?
Could I run Wine+Firefox+Flash? Yes.
Will I? No.
Macromedia should keep all three versions current. - mortuis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0As a Linux newbie this is a great link, certainly preferable to logging into a windows partition when you want to visit a site using modern flash technology. It'll also make it easier to persuade my flash-gamer fiance to let me fully migrate the main PC.
- myboot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0You buncha Linux snobs.. why don't you frolic off and find something more obscure to delight youselves with... maybe see if you can get your favorite Linux distro running on a South African Bat Dung Grub or something.
This post was VERY helpful to me. I'm running Ubuntu Dapper where VMWare Workstation doesn't work (that I know of yet, at least) and where Flash 8 support is nil. Therefore, if I could not watch of listen to my www.mlb.com subscriptions and follow my teams, nor could I watch my favorite TV program: lost.abc.com
Just because it isn't helpful to you, doesn't obligate you to go Linux Snob on the rest of us. Get stuffed. - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Step #1.) Get a real OS.
- nick58b, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3It's still better than only having flash 7.
