- cooldude127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well, i got it installed and working after looking at the wiki for some networking help. i'm actually posting this comment from my Mac, connected to coLinux with VNC (that's not really what I intend to use it for; I'm just testing it out). I'm very impressed. Speed is decent, and I can actually access it with it's own IP address and everything, making it a candidate for using as a server, since I don't have any computers that I currently can turn into dedicated Linux servers.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a friend of mine uses colinux and loves it. ive only used cygwin and unix4dos to get some functionality going there.
looking forward to your howto cooldude. - cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone actually use coLinux it hasn't been updated in a long time (does it need to be?)
Anyone with personal stories. Success/failure .... last time I tried coLinux was before I had ever heard of VMWare, QEMU, etc. - dougvfr750, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have used CoLinux in my previous job. It actually worked pretty well with a very CPU intensive simulation program. Only caused about a 10% slowdown with respect to running native on Linux. However when I tried it with a different app that used a lot more file system calls it was slow.
- nihilism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2whatever happened to that cool dos app that let you boot linux from dos, that thing was handy, what was that called? oh yeah! It was LOADLIN.EXE, duh! I used that back in the day when I used slackware, you just boot the kernel, it's pretty handy, also, you could use zipslack, download the rest of slackware, or use dropline, or xfce, oh yeah, for the noobs, dont install every package individually, just do upgradepkg --install-new *.tgz
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1why not try CrossOver OFfice or WINE?
...I'm listening using iTunes under SuSE Linux :D - rasbill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i couldnt get this to work for the life of me, kept getting error messages in files i didnt even touch
- cooldude127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An update to my coLinux as an iTunes server stories: I have successfully found a way to setup a Windows box with coLinux as an iTunes server, using Rendezvous/Bonjour and all that goodness. I'll post a how-to soon, because there are a few caveats. However, it did cause me far less trouble than trying to do it with Cygwin.
- navaburo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0first off, thankyou cooldude127 and dougvfr750 for the intelligent comments
I use coLinux on my windows box and have found it to be a very valuable tool.
It ran well in kde and as doug said preformed at about 80% efficiency on average (based on a processor load test i did). IMHO it doesnt need to be updated, it runs under a recent-enough kernel and supports almost all modern library versions. Its major pitfall is hardware support (sound/video). But remember, this isn't a replacement OS, it is best used as a tool to run unix apps under windows without emulation. Its like cygwin on crack. - cooldude127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"it's like cygwin on crack"
I agree, and I like it much better than Cygwin. One reason is that cygwin still compiles stuff into windows executables, which gives it certain limitations that are just a part of Windows. coLinux doesn't suffer from these same limitations. - cooldude127, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hope this will help me with some issues i'm having with daapd. I want to setup up some iTunes sharing of a large number of music files scattered across different libraries, and windaapd sucked.
