- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56"actually costs more than $300 after just one year"
After 1 year, it's $255.40. Are you skipping math class to make this post? - Technopope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31This "$99" computer is really a $250 computer.
The $99 price is only if you sign up for the $12.95 per month "backup service" to store data via the Internet. If you don't want this "service", the computer will cost $250. - anotherjeff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30or you could use a normal router.
- iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -11/+34LAME. You have to pay $13 a month for on-line "backup." This "$99" computer actually costs more than $300 after just one year.
- z00k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Omfg ... I so thought that said "Zombo to roll out $99 Linux-Based Computer"
For the unknowing: http://zombo.com/ - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24@BigBadger (#6556119)
And apparently:
"That $99 price for a fully functioning computer with what the company calls $2000 worth of preinstalled applications has our undivided attention thus far."
How can they refer to the preinstalled applications as being "worth $2000" when *there is no one selling or buying any of them for any price because they're FOSS??* What is this, an infomercial? Are they going to throw six tap lights and a 30-day supply of boner pills in too, a $100 value for free? - iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Thank you. This is really a $250 computer if you want to use it the way you want to.
And I, for one, want to use my hardware the way I want to. - TorrentFox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Buried for the ***** in the fine print
- BigBadger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Cute, but un-digging due to the silly subscription service to backup data.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I got a cell phone for free, too. If you don't count the two-year contract.
- 10001110101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11zombo.com is finally doing something?
- inkyblue2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9or you can still get the $75 pc that was on digg a while back:
http://ztechshop.net/computers/sub-100/ - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think zombo.com does enough as is. i mean
You can do anything at Zombocom. Anything at all.
The only limit is yourself.
Welcome to Zombocom.
Welcome, this is Zombocom.
Welcome to Zombocom. - lbmouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@santaliqueur
Pot - Kettle - Black: $254.40
@omgwtfroflmaox2
FTFA: "If you don't commit to a service plan, the little PC costs $250" - DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't know what you're talking about. Everything is possible at zombo.com.
- Alexio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No it's not. I can get 4GB flash drives for £20 where I am. That's not actually their retail value, but for the companies it costs even less.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.ztechshop.net/computers/minikin/ looks suspiciously like the $99 computer. Only it's $429
- sexybobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4new? zombocom is almost 8 years old. not that it is not an awesome web site.
- spiffytech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's why they invented Truecrypt!
- Alexio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you can actually buy this with no extra subscription fee's, then this is truely awesome. I would certainly spend money on something like this. I have so many uses for it in my mind already.
After just having a look, apparently you actually have to pay $250. No Digg. - randomc0de, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks like the editor didn't RTFA. The computer is $250. You can pay $99 for it, with a $12.95/month service plan, except the contract would be at least a year long, making it actually $254 (plus tax). You lose at reading comprehension and simple economics.
- Mercury821, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If only this thing had TV-Out ... it would be great as a MythTV front-end.
- YHCIR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It doesn't even give the spec, how can they possibly be selling something very soon without even having a proper website.
- VikOlliver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Really a $250 Computer. Burried.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The pricing is too high for consumers. They should offer a stripped-down storage, backup, and online support package for $3-$5 per month, and offer a more expensive enterprise account - say $30/month plus per-hour charges for phone support.
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats what I was thinking.
- theWrkncacnter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$99 price is misleading. buried.
- fisharmor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NO WAY.
Their website not only contains ZERO info, but they won't let me back out of it.
Sent a comment that we need to know HW specs. Until then, this is bunk.
Could have a "fanless" PII processor in it for all we know. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2automatic. no thanks. some stuff i dont want other people to have access too.
no not porn lol - LeeSoong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AppleTV hacked has more power - anyone get Gentoo Linux running on an AppleTV yet?

:~)
THIS DEVICE is exactly why Apple, Inc. needs the AppleTV to run full OS X,
and come with 1 GB of RAM. http://www.apple.com/appletv/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3People should buy a cheap used computer. You can get so much more and help out the environment by reducing the amount of waste that fully functioning computers make.
- NJank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not screaming about the fee. screaming about the Inaccurate digg title and summary. i.e.: Buried as Inaccurate
- Grayfox777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it were actually $99, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. They're ***** for advertising it incorrectly.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5A $250 router? That is the cost without the service agreement, which would probably be fairly useless in a network device (although perhaps you could use it like an offsite SAN?). You are probably better off with an inexpensive router with hackable firmware like the Linksys WTR series.
- debuggercll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think it needs more USB ports.
- cantormath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dont like the monthly fee and the 4gb drive.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a simple finance scheme.
Hire purchase, subscription computing, whatever your take on the monthly fees there is no way to buy the computer for $99.
Misrepresentative. Buried as inaccurate. - Lobster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is $90 in volume and $110 for one off - their shipping costs are ridiculous though
http://www.norhtec.com/products/mcjr/index.html
run DSL or Puppy and you are away . . .
Happytime. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1I think the most interesting part of this story is the http://www.zombo.com link. WTF is it? Apart from being Zombo.com?
- slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1* sigh *
Why doesn't some company remake these, upgrade proc to a K6-II (500MHz) with 83fsb jumper setting:
http://web.archive.org/web/20001018042321/www.thinknic.com/index.html
They sold for $200 in 2000... I wonder about now?! - iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Thank you.
- Shawnosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Maybe there is no service contract and you can cancel the sub after 1 month? It's nice to see some new business models hitting the market either way.
I can't say I agree with the rage of those screaming "fine print". They said there is a fee right in the first paragraph. Knee jerk much? - krschuerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It could still be a great frontend for people that have vga inputs on their TVs.
- crash128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think this is even going to sell to stupid people.
- theWrkncacnter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol
- mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, they'll just ding you for an early termination fee. You have to sign a contract to get it for $100, and that will be a part of it.
- dr-steve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I still have a pair of Netpliance I-Openers I modded quite a bit: 333MHz AMD K6/3, 128M, 10G hard disk. A very nice $99 computer since I hit a window to avoid the month-by-month.
Is this device the next generation's hack-my-business-model-to-bankruptcy?
(Anyone want to buy a used I-Opener?)
Steve - washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@lbmouse
Actually, you forgot to include tax and shipping. That could very well put it over $300 (tax alone would probably be $12.75 at 5%, shipping is not cheap for computers). - LeeSoong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If you don't commit to a service plan, the little PC costs $250.
- Oldsmobile, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0So, how about a laptop like this?
