- dramaticlemur, on 03/11/2008, -2/+9Even the mold in my basement runs Ubuntu.
- Lyk4n, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5I'm pretty new to Linux and I've been running Ubuntu now since December, I love it more than I did my Windows XP. I do plan to move on to a more "powerful" distro when I feel more comfortable with Linux, but for now the user-friendliness of Ubuntu is helping me fall in love with Linux.
- dcherryholmes, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Just curious what you consider a more "powerful" distro. I've drifted through a lot of them over the years, and Debian can certainly make a valid claim to the title "most powerful." At this point in my career, I consider distros with the largest and most up to date software repositories "most powerful" for me, personally. You can get more recent software than what shows up in Ubuntu (say with a source-based distro like Gentoo, which I also ran for some years), but there are corresponding costs. I recall the days of dependency hell, and I'm still frankly a little surprised every time I install a package with apt-get and it "just works." Auto-detecting hardware correctly would also be a good metric of "powerful," and Ubuntu does an outstanding job of this as well.
- 89vision, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3I agree, Ive set up many a slackware box and am very comfortable with a linux command prompt but id much rather spend time customizing everything to my liking in ubuntu then recompiling old libraries in slack.
- Lyk4n, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2@dcherryholmes & TnTBass: Usually when someone mentions Ubuntu they get dug down and thrashed for it. Which I think is a bunch of elitist *****. I agree with both of you that Ubuntu is a powerful distro, just everyone else flips out when you're not using Slackware or Gentoo(more "difficult" distros) or not doing everything from the command prompt with your eyes covered. I love my Ubuntu, it does everything I need it to do right now. I've customized it way more than I ever could XP, plus it's free(as in beer)! I'm still a novice but Linux has won me over..
- TnTBass, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2When it comes to Linux, there power in the OS is what you make of it.
Perhaps you meant a more difficult distro? You could grab Gentoo and do a mini inst and build from there, customizing as you go... however, you can still customize the wazoo out of Ubuntu if you want. I think building your OS from a mini inst is definitely harder, but if you succeed, you will know the OS inside and out. I prefer to learn a new distro this way. It's incredibly frustrating, but you learn so much it's worth it. - Airforcefalco, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1I got a friend of mine to switch from XP to Ubuntu and he loves it!
He works as a General Manager at the DMV so maybe they will switch too and make that whole process faster!! - xsxs, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1My pain killers run Ubuntu and I no longer have to worry about dependency!
- TnTBass, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1That must have been a hard decision to switch out your wife for an operating system, but hey man, I applaud your dedication to the cause!
- xsxs, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Don't hold your breath. That is a government agency. I doubt the Gerneral Manager has a lot of say when it comes to IT.
- MeneerR, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Am i the only one with a grandparent that wouldn't use ANY computer .. EVER.
We buy them special remote controls that have only 6 buttons on them. They don't use text, VCR, radio, etc.
And they have a really really big phone .. with big buttons .. and buttons with pictures of us on them, and a picture of the doctor.
Seriously. Where do you people find these cool grandparents? - xsxs, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Belief... and Yeah, Yeah we get it there are lots of distros however, this post is not about other distros, it is about Ubuntu.
- TnTBass, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I was not attempting to bash you whatsoever. Ubuntu is a great distro, I use it, or Kubuntu when I just want the machine up and running with as few hassles as possible. I'm happy you love using it.
I meant to point out the possibilities you have just begun to open up. If you love the distro, spend more time with it, and you will learn Linux better as a whole. (You can also mini inst Ubuntu, btw: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/Min ...
I always suggest Ubuntu for beginners. I don't think there is an easier distro to use (Fedora comes close).
If you are feeling really brave, Try FreeBSD. (Its actually a unix derivative, but has linux binary compatibility, so you can install all your favorite Linux apps). Build from a mini inst and go from there. After I got a little more comfortable with Linux, that is what I did. And once I did that, I repeated it on a laptop. - zate, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1I switched my Wife to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu was awesome, the software support from 3rd parties sucked. We went back to XP because Google's Picasa doesn't work the same under Ubuntu as it does under windows, no video support.
Fix it Google please. - MrViklund, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1Buried because this article only further increase the believe that Ubuntu is the only Linux distro out there.
- Dunhamzzz, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1Spelling Fail.
- miki00, on 03/17/2008, -0/+0Pimiento uses Ubuntu
- penguincentral, on 03/11/2008, -10/+4Even my toilet of all things run's Ubuntu. That's flush-tastic ain't it kids?
