Instructions say to burn it to a CD, not DVD or USB stick. - depro9, on 07/19/2009, -13/+88I'll stick with Ubuntu thanks. :P
- benbrooks101, on 07/19/2009, -1/+62offlineblog.net appears to be offline!
- dawnraid101, on 07/19/2009, -0/+46The blog is indeed offline.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 07/19/2009, -8/+42Great, that is exactly what we need - another distribution of linux. Anyone want to make some more WWII shooters?
- airstrike, on 07/19/2009, -0/+30what did you expect from offlineblog.net?
- jeriqo, on 07/19/2009, -23/+49We don't give a *****.
- overnine9k, on 07/19/2009, -3/+25I've tried it out. It's nothing but a novelty at the moment. Couldn't get internet to work. No option to change screen resolution.
- jbarnard, on 07/19/2009, -0/+16well then isn't it great then that you can have Ubuntu and people who want android can have it!
- arcticblue, on 07/19/2009, -3/+19"Error establishing a database connection" and not even on the front page yet.
- Rudegar, on 07/19/2009, -1/+16"Anyone want to make some more WWII shooters?"
how about one where you can play as tom hanks or david schwimmer :O - cptcomic, on 07/19/2009, -0/+14FTA
You can also use the disc image in a virtualization application like VirtualBox, VMWare or Microsoft Virtual PC if you want to try the operating system without even rebooting your computer. - spunker202, on 07/19/2009, -1/+15I'm back after tested this .iso
This is a pure phone Os, just made for running on Pc's here.
You've got contact button, search bar ( google of course ), settings
When clicking settings you get a panel with other categories like : Music, files, video, ...
I was stuck after entering Audio files, I got a black screen with " No media files " and that's all, no way to get out this.
I then tried pushing every button on the keyboard to exit this empty folder, but nothing happend, I could only move the mouse.
Then I pushed "home" button, and i got back to the basic screen with search bar and contac button.
I've only run this 5 minutes, and I've quickly understood that this is only a pc version of the mobile Os, NOTHING MORE.
My suggestion : Wait and see, let google develop their Os features and lil while. Then we can see if it's worth a try. - marmotjmarmot, on 07/19/2009, -1/+14Can I play as Tom Hanks, and shoot David Schwimmer?
- ThantiK, on 07/19/2009, -0/+12For those of you trying it:
ESC -> Back
Left Windows Key -> Home Screen
Tab -> Google Search
Really helps to know what buttons to use to be able to navigate the damn thing. btw it doesn't have an 'sd card' attached in the image so it doesn't want to install APK files from 3rd party websites, and the android market is NOT available on the SDK because of the ability to crack the files.
I'm sure there would be a way to rip the android market app from a G1 provided you had it rooted but that's beyond the scope of my post. - cianci162, on 07/19/2009, -1/+13It's a big step. I was confused with the recent news about a separate OS from google, and am happy they're gonna allow the Android OS on more then just phones. Oh and how dumb was the writer of the article, "i couldn't make a bootable CD..."
- dicer999, on 07/19/2009, -2/+14Make sure to use to torrent to download the ISO - took me about 10 minutes to download compared to the ~50 minute HTTP download.
- inactive, on 07/19/2009, -1/+12@ Airstrike: One Internet. I owe it to you.
- brianhonaker, on 07/19/2009, -1/+12Tested on my Acer Aspire One. Would not read from CD after reaching the splash page.
- kyle212, on 07/19/2009, -0/+11Well I can see why they're not called onlineblog.net
- Rudegar, on 07/19/2009, -2/+13"Android is not the Linux kernel."
it is however A linux kernel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_sy ... - spunker202, on 07/19/2009, -1/+12I'm dling the .iso right now.
I'll post more info after having tested this.
Ps : utube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9ZpJGw6xEo - CedEx, on 07/19/2009, -4/+14What does that mean? It will get fixed because it is open source and the many wonderful developers will work on it? Or it will never get fixed because everyone thinks someone else is working on it?
- nadadingsda, on 07/19/2009, -0/+8If you are using Grub, you can actually boot from an ISO image that is somewhere on your hard drive:
Say you save the ISO as /droid.iso, and your root partition corresponds to sda2 (i.e. hd0,1 in grub), add the following to your grub.conf:
map (hd0,1)/droid.iso (hd1)
map --rehook
chainloader (hd1)+1
rootnoverify (hd1)
boot
Caveats: Grub has to support the filesystem used on (hd0,1), only some filesystems, such as ext2, are supported. Make sure hd1 doesn't already exist when you try this, otherwise use hd2, hd3 etc. - Legolover64, on 07/19/2009, -0/+8Buried for Blog Spam, dugg up this comment with actual useful information. Thanks for posting the links!
- oxys, on 07/19/2009, -0/+8Put this on a touch screen laptop or Tablet PC, and it will make a sweet test/development environment for android apps imo.
- MattBD, on 07/19/2009, -1/+8Try it in Virtualbox, it worked fine for me there.
- fluoro, on 07/19/2009, -9/+16Android on any computer seems like nothing bug gimmick to me. Don't get me wrong, it's a great OS for a phone but it just doesn't seem right on a netbook or a laptop. Give me Ubuntu, please.
- inactive, on 07/19/2009, -0/+6I think you rmeant Ubuntu. OpenSUSE? Who would install that dying beast?
- Echomote, on 07/19/2009, -0/+6you can get USB optical drives
- inactive, on 07/19/2009, -3/+9netbooks are so close to cellphones at this point windows xp is over kill for them. its not like your going to play half life or bioshock on a netbook, you surf the internets, check emails, use word processor. and all of those are gonna work faster on android than xp on a netbook.
- TheMu, on 07/19/2009, -0/+6Can't believe I fell for that. Again.
- oxys, on 07/19/2009, -0/+51. For a test/development environment for making android apps
2. To have a cool touch screen environment on a touch screen netbook, laptop, or tablet
3. To test the OS before buying a mobile Android device
4. For any device in need of a light weight, but fairly functional OS
5. For old, low end computers
6. Customization for a device with a singular purpose android is capable of
7. It's cool
8. Etc. - Rotzooi, on 07/19/2009, -2/+7@carterx
Yes, let's download some obscure .iso from a free hoster instead from google ***** dot com!
I'm sure they need to extra bandwidth, guys. - chrysalis, on 07/19/2009, -2/+7Does it work under VMWare?
- jatkins679, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4Awesome. Got it to work on my new MacBook Pro using VMWare Fusion. For the guest OS, I chose 'linux' and then 'other linux 2.2.x kernel'. Nice.
- bsonline, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4Voice command capabilities which iPhone 3gs now has. Looks like an awesome feature, but my crappy iPhone 3g 16gb can't do it.
- audguy, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4offlineblog is offline
- Rudegar, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4"For those of you trying it:

from 2 posts up
think one need to use those keys alot to navigate - MorpheousMarty, on 07/19/2009, -0/+4If it's a good one, I still like a WWII shooter. Same with Linux distros. The more the merrier. I used to play the same game over and over, if it's a new game, a familiar setting doesn't turn me off. Linux distros have to work right, so it's a whole different story, but generally different distros makes me more familiar with different aspects of linux or PCs.
- TheMu, on 07/19/2009, -0/+450 minutes for the ISO? Really? I got it off of Google Code and it took no more than 2 or 3 minutes.
http://code.google.com/p/live-android/downloads/li ... - golgotha, on 07/19/2009, -3/+7You do know the iphone is running a unix kernel, right?
I have shell access on my iphone and I can also do all the aforementioned things.
Personally, I'm waiting on the next big hardware release that supports android. That's when I'm moving over. - MattBD, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3It'll be better once they find a way to let you save files on it - I was thinking it'd be ideal for use with Android Scripting Environment, since I find the text editor for that a bit fiddly on the phone.
- nazzareno, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3http://www.weethet.nl/english/hardware_bootfromusb ...
This google search thing is awesome! - monkeyBox, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Yes, there is voice search on android. Many of the apps that have a search function on android have a voice-input capability. What I wish android had is the voice commands capabilities (e.g. "Play music by ___"), which iPhone 3.0 now has. I think they're getting close to putting something like that in, though.
- Patareco, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3with no doubt an offline blog...
- smacksaw, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3Have you tried the Google App for the iPhone?
If there's voice search like that on Android, that's almost a dealmaker. - Rudegar, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3I had this a week agoe more a proof of concept then anything anybody would run on their netbook
but given time could work fine - Pfkninenines, on 07/19/2009, -1/+4Works fine under VirtualBox. Cool, but you're not going to use it as a main OS.
- smacksaw, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3I love GRUB. I was looking for this exact post. You rock!
